    Thank you for the post! Just last night my female went after her brother. It was a battle. As you said the females are dominate. She becomes possessive of my wife and daughter sometimes;
if she is sitting or laying with them. When her brother approached she went after him. I was able to quickly pull them apart. No damage to them or us. This is a slickening event that will leave
you with PTSD. I am the Alpha to both of them and she will not do this when I am present. It is very upsetting. We have had many Basenji's over the last 20 years. I have been through this
more than I wish to remember. I have found that identifying the trigger is critical for the prevention of future encounters. Being aware and having a diversion plan have been most effective for
us. I think you handled the situation well. I am sorry you received a bite. If two people can snatch them up and separate is best, as I saw you do. If you just grab up only one the other will usually keep attacking; which you may become injured in the process. Thanks again for sharing. Hope I may have said something helpful.

thank you so much, it is very helpful!! as you say, trying to prevent the situations that trigger them most is best, I try to be super cautious now... but still can't help but stress out every time they pass near each other...

Wow, thanks for sharing! I had no idea that female Basenjis were so spicy. Will definitely keep an eye out for this behavior when I get my female.
Dog fights are scary and happen so fast. I think you handled this as best you could for this being the first fight!

When we had 3 Basenjis, with 2 females, the fights between the 2 females, Florala and Gwendolyn were very scary and could erupt without warning.

My rescue Baseji from BRAT escaped. I finally cornered him in a narrow back yard. I slowly closed in on him and picked him up. He bit me deeply into my Hand at the base of my thumb. It was a serious deep bite.

sorry to hear that... yes basenjis won't hesitate to bite when they feel frightened or threatened... hope all turns out well with your rescue basenji!

Took a long time to pull them apart not a great look frankly. Maybe time to not even have two if you can't figure this out before this happens...because its going to happen again. Once this is in them it won't go away.

Ipy is a rescue dog that we are fostering, and unfortunately there is noone else to care for her, so its not by choice that we have two females at the moment. otherwise, I agree, its not ideal. For the time being we are managing them and superwising closely. I do hope that Ipy will find her forever home one day.

First time that I saw an angry Basenji. At least the dogs were not alone and I think this is why it is important to crate train a Basenji. I thought that Ipy being the youngest female and after so many months at her new home, she has accepted Makena as the leader of the pack. Oringo stayed cool and intelligently did not interfere between the two females. Is there any particular training plan on how to train Basenjis in this particular situation?

There’s exercises you can do for resource guarding between dogs which might help, but you need to have both dogs secured and you need to be good at reading body language to know where to start. Although usually after an incident like this, you would expect Ipy or the offending dog to learn that they should not approach other dogs when they have a bone because the outcome is not pleasant.

Doesn't work that way. Even puppies and weak dogs are "allowed" to defend their food/toys in the dog world. If Ipy had been the one with the bone, it would have been her right to tell Makena or Oringo to back off. The difference is, they're adults and respect the rules. I don't think Ipy's out of puberty yet, and you can see when Makena gives the first serious warning, Ipy just jumps and goes right back at it. She's ready to play/tease, and didn't understand how serious it was. Probably because the older ones have allowed a lot of "improper" behavior due to her age, but that's coming to an end.

Ipy does not do that to Oringo, but she seeks to annoy Makena... Makena has generally been pretty cool and tolerant, but obviously this time it was too much for her... I am not sure if any training can help here... all three of them have been sharing food ok, using same lickimats, dispenser toys etc. it feels to me that bone was just a trigger but the tension between them was building up. I am trying to show Ipy her place in the pack, but I want to be careful so she doesn't feel deprived and want to avoid triggering her jealousy even more... I am just trying to resolve any arguments quickly and promote calmness by using soft and happy voice, patting them and distracting...

never just take one dog away. The other one takes it as weakness and will attack

I don’t know what else you expected her to do until someone else stepped in to help. She’s only one person. I’ve intervened in several dog fights and it is hard to think clearly in moments like this, especially when you didn’t see the start of the fight and aren’t sure who the instigator is.

I'm really sorry you got bit, and I'm sure it was very upsetting for you all if it was your first fight. My first dog was male, but all the others were female, and only my current ones are basenjis. I have lost count of how many I've stopped in my life. That doesn't mean they can't live peaceful, normal lives together, but they will have an occasional fight.
Like someone else said: finding the triggers and removing them if possible is the best way to solve it. Maybe they can't have bones or chews in the same room. But it can also be that Ipy's just at that age. And it is their heat season. I don't know if any of them are intact, but my oldest girl is craaanky right now! She's never a ray of sunshine with other dogs, but right now she just growls as soon as my youngest (near Ipy's age) gets close.
On the video, you can see that Makena is wary of Ipy even before she comes to her. She also gives a fair warning, but it doesn't look like Ipy took it seriously. That's always the thing with the young ones. They push and push. If you're lucky, they'll grow out of this. But even then, sometimes fights happen in a family.

thank you so much for sharing your experience, it is so valuable! I've heard that once basenji females had one serious fight they won't be able to tolerate each other any longer... I do hope its not the case. I am happy to see Makena and Ipy still playing well together, even though there are moments of tension between them every now and then. evening time seems to be the worst. Ipy is indeed very pushy, but she doesn't annoy Oringo as much. She favours him a lot. I do hope she grows out of it...

@@oringomakenabasenjitrainin6407 Oh no, it doesn't have to mean anything! Yes, some dogs can't live together, but this is not an indication of that. This is normal for many breeds/individuals.
My oldest basenji had several fights throughout her life (so far) with my previous dog. But most of the time they got along great! She loved her "big sis," a French bulldog. Fights were rare, and they never hurt each other (more than an accidental scratch or two).
I haven't seen any difference in my basenji fights than in the fights my previous dogs got into. It's just something that happens. I know it's scary, and it always makes my heart beat like a drum, but it's really their version of a shouting match. Like we can have with our human family members every now and then.
My youngest is slightly older than Ipy, I think. She also pushes, which isn't a good idea when you already have a cranky 9 year-old lady who's not having of that! But they play all the time when they're not in heat. My youngest is getting less pushy and more respectful. She's not "submissive," just more calm and more polite.
Sorry for the long story, but I know how scary it is. And you were really unlucky to get bit in your first fight! They don't mean to, but when human hands enter the situation, we're unpredictable to them, and they hit us in a way that they wouldn't hit each other.
