Lets Rant: Visually Impaired vs Blind

    Thanks. I’m just at the point of considering a cane. It’s hard to feel “blind enough” to need it, but I need to overcome the fear of judgment from others. Bus drivers will know what it means and maybe have more patience as I am slow getting on and off.

      Just remember that those people that make comments like that are just ignorant. And I don't mean that in a mean way. I just mean it in a way that they are not educated enough about blindness and visual impairment. I still get questions all the time because I can look people directly in the face when talking to them. Throws people for a loop all the time. I recently applied for a guide dog and in the process of that currently. And even me my own self. Thought I had too much vision for that. But the truth of the matter is we are now blind/ visually impaired but could be completely blind or pretty close down the road depending on our current eye situations. It's always better to be prepared ahead of time and at the last minute. In other words, just keep on doing what you're doing and don't worry about what other people think. I'm assuming you're the type of individual who always wants to make other people happy first before yourself. Sometimes we need to just do for us ourselves. God bless you and thank you for enjoying my videos. I do fully intend on making more down the road. Life has gone through a lot of changes.

      It's a great feeling when a little normalcy comes back to us. Even if it's only 2%. Lol. It's almost like feeling human again. No matter how much we adapt to our vision loss, so he's such a good feeling when something even though just a little bit brings us back to how we felt at one time before.

      Nice! I hope you got it for a good price. It's the only thing about the orcam. I didn't like the price! And the color recognition. Lol. I just put mine away and it's bag. Won't be needing it again till probably tomorrow. Also, Make sure you download the app on either your phone or an iPad. Makes a lot easier to get into the settings and set up your Wi-Fi. Believe it or not I just found out about the app. Just so used to just taking out of the bag and using it. It also has a feature in the settings where you can find your device. If you lose it. It'll make your orcam chime. Good luck and enjoy it! Had mine for a couple years now and still works.

      Well, thank you very, very much! I've had some more years under my belt since this video so my knowledge hopefully has gotten better. Lol. The newest white cane I ended up getting was the see me light up cane. I hope to make a video or two about that. And I recently had some updated OM white cane training refresh help from the association for the blind in my state. There's always more to know and learn. Thank you so much for listening to the videos. God bless

      A few years ago, the OM taught me to use the mobility cane. I would carry it to the airport and during Covid to medical practices. Mostly, I never used it. My peripheral vision is good, but my central vision is poor. I can walk fast but not recognizes you unless you were 5 feet from me (with good lighting I might miss the ruts in the pavement). I was not told about the ID cane or guide cane! I have decided that I am exhausted with explaining myself to others thus I think it is time for a new cane. Can you share some thoughts with ne? I am 5'4". My mobility cane is 50". I ordered a 46"gjuide cane but I think it is too long. I think a 30" would be too short. I think a counter is 38" high. I would like the folks in offices to see my cane. I would also like to walk at the park with the cane held in front of me, so I don't get run over by a bike. What is your thought about guide/ID cane length? Thanks! Oh, I like the eye of the lighted cane!@@myvisuallyimpairedlife5674

    As I was re-listening to this video I made years ago now. I figured I would let everyone know on an update!! The following year my neighbor who lives to the right of me was outside at 4:45 a.m. puffing away on a cigarette sitting on the stairs of her deck with the deck light on while her hubby was loading his work truck. From the right she heard panting and the sound of something coming her way and trotting directly 6 ft ahead of her diagonally. Threw her yard to the road was a mountain lion. And my neighbor is fully cited. That same following month her cat went missing. So, I definitely did stand in front of a mountain lion and I believe this full heartedly now. So for those people who say mountain lions don't come past the mountains and into towns or cities I say hoopla to you sir!! Lol. It's definitely a scary thought to know and be verified of what I thought I had saw or been near. Thank you to all of you who have been listening to my channel still. And I still look forward to hearing comments about your experiences. God bless

      Thanks for the comment, I have 3DS as well. However it's a pokémon Black and white addition still in the box. Last thing I want to do is hack it. Lol. Although it's probably the only console I own, that's not hacking some way. Lol. I didn't even remember making this video. It's been so long. Listen to it and I was laughing at myself. Took me so long to get to the point! I should remake this video in the future. A lot has changed in video games accessibility. Especially when it comes to Minecraft on the PS4 and the switch. It works far better on PS4 now than it did when I made this video. In fact, I use it more on the PS4 now due to the fact that my daughter now being 7 years old uses the switch to play with me on co-op. It's better in the PS4 now cuz it even reads all the objects in the inventory out loud. Don't have to strive to zoom or anything anymore. Thanks for the comment and I'll look into the 3DS fact that you gave me. I'm now curious!

    what's even more frustrating than the lack of audio described titles, is that even when streaming services like Disney+ and Prime have it, they don't have a way to only look at those titles. i left Netflix cuz their selection of blockbuster titles leaves a lot to be desired, but i'll give them credit for at least having a way to search for only audio described titles. i might just have to sign up for free trials on various services just to give them feedback and suggest this as an idea. :) hopefully, things will improve for all of us soon. and by the way, it's not just us visually impaired people who like audio description. my sighted husband likes it too. he says it not only shows him things he wouldn't have noticed otherwise, but it also lets him step away from the movie and get other things done while still "watching" the movie. so let's keep bugging service providers. maybe they'll finally get in gear. :)

    • @myvisuallyimpairedlife5674
      @myvisuallyimpairedlife5674 ปีที่แล้ว

      From your comment, I got the fact that you called the school for the blind. Not sure if that is different from an association for the blind. Most states in this country has an association of some kind for the blind/visually impaired. Those are the people that you want to be in touch with for white cane training, peer support, groups, etc. I looked it up for you, and I was able to find three associations for the blind in your state. One being in Little Rock, Arkansas. Called world services for the blind, and I found another one called alpha point association for the blind, and the third one being national Federation of the blind. The one in Little Rock has the best reviews on Google. You can always try calling them. World services for the blind phone number 501-6 64-7100 The other one was Alpha point association for the blind phone number 501-983-0540 And the third one was national Federation of the blind phone number 479-435-8348 World services and alpha Association are both located in Little Rock Arkansas and national association for the blind is located in Springdale Arkansas. The only other solution I could think of on top of my head is going on Facebook and finding a support group in or around your area for The blind/visually impaired. Good luck, and I hope this information was helpful. Can always comment down the road another video letting me know if you were able to find anything.

    Hello is there any function or other device that can read with AI. For instance if I am looking at the menu and only want to read desserts. Or read items but not prices. Or scan headlines etc. or go to the sports section or read the score of the Kansas game

    • @myvisuallyimpairedlife5674
      @myvisuallyimpairedlife5674 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello and thanks for your question and I'll try to do the best I can to answer it for you. To start, I want to say that my orcam device has not had updates in the last couple years. So if there's any new functions that can do all the things you're asking, I apologize cuz I would not know. However, As it sits today my orcam can read individual sentences, I can even stop and rewind word by word to get to the points I want and start over again. Again. I know that if I was in front of a menu I can find the dessert section and just read that all alone and not everything else with it. But is it a perfect science? No, it takes practice with the orcam. And it is not without its blemishes at times. When it comes to other applications, all I can tell you is what I know from personal experience. I own a pixel 6 pro phone but most pixels are all the same and have amazing software features. Like when I open my camera I can use what's called Google lens to read my documents. I will say though I've only ever read them from top to bottom so I don't know for fact, however, I am sure the app would register finger touch for individual line reading. But you would have to try for yourself to find out. And the good news is, even if you don't own a pixel phone, you can still install Google lens on your phone if you have an Android device. I know there is many other applications on iOS, Apple and Android that is made to do this stuff but I do not use that at all so I could not help you there. I also tend to cheat a lot because my wife will do the lot of reading for me. Lol. Old habits die hard. I hope my comment reply has been sufficient enough for you. And don't forget to watch my other or cam videos where I demonstrate the device. Maybe your answers in those. Have yourself a wonderful day and I'm here for you if you have further questions down the road. God bless

But deep down, I truly believe that there is a lot more in this world that we just don’t see ignore notice. Even Albert Einstein believed we go off as energy in the end. And energy never ceases to exist. But I can tell you assuredly, I have not had any go to the counters for many many, many years.

    • @myvisuallyimpairedlife5674
      @myvisuallyimpairedlife5674 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well till you get your training I suggest you just be very precautious and do the best you can. That's what I did. I started out with regular walking sticks, made from a stick of wood. Lol. However, after my training I did realize there is a lot of difference between what I was doing and what I learned. But I adapted even though I was still stuck to my old ways in a little bit. Eventually you'll have that training and you'll be able to feel every single crack bump or even pebbles on the ground. I'm glad to hear that you're going for the training though. I hope the best for you honestly! Comment me again in the future to let me know how it goes. God bless buddy

    I'm still doing research but I'm trying to find audio movie tracks online which apparently exist then you can play it simultaneously with the movie that's not offering audio description and Walla. If someone knows a reputable site that has audio description track from movies put it in the comments.

    I freaking love graphic audio! Great to listen to at work or while driving. Really only heard Marvel and DC stuff so far, but looking to get into more graphic audio.

      @myvisuallyimpairedlife5674 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad to hear that! What you really need to listen to and it's older but there's so many episodes is the death land series. That is a must! At least download one or two and see how you like it. Those were the first ones that got me hooked to graphic audio. I did end up really likeing vampire Earth though, also like demon, warsaga and I listen to some steampunk stuff etc. But there's always so many new writers coming out with new stuff. If I was a millionaire I don't everything graphic audio. Lol. I'm glad you love it. I love it as well. And I really need to make a new graphic audio video cuz I had so many mistakes in this one. Lol and I even talked to someone from graphic audio after this so if I remade it I could probably get a code or two. If I ask that is.

    I’ve decided to use a longer cane since I have no right side peripheral. I get a little self conscious though since I’m not fully blind, but still have a cane.

    • @myvisuallyimpairedlife5674
      @myvisuallyimpairedlife5674 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We need to go with what makes us comfortable. I never truly followed the length chart for white canes. I just found a 52 -in worked good for me. I also heard, and past videos by other TH-camrs that the longer the cane the faster you can go. How true that is. I do not know. And I'm glad despite your discomfort you still use your white cane. The only thing that matters in the end is how we feel and not what others think. Thanks for the comment.

      Well, if you’re asking is it worth the price tag it’s selling for. The technology the way it is today I would have to go with no. Is it worth owning definitely! I enjoy this device immensely. However, since Covid started I did not use it as much or often. So I tend to forget to take it out with me now in days I’m so used to it sitting on the shelf. Before that I used it a lot!. And I’m getting back on the Or cam band wagon. I will be making more videos on this device. It’s a lot of things I should’ve clarified about it and never did in my videos. So some update videos will be a coming

    Need to know about charging type of adapter will it work with magnetic cables etc ease of use

    • @myvisuallyimpairedlife5674
      @myvisuallyimpairedlife5674 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The charger that comes with the device has a special type of magnetic connector. I think they made it that way so that you would have to buy cables through them. But, it's been a while since I have investigated any of these wires /cables. Something might have come out since then. Sorry I'm no help there. I do know the cord that they gave me is of good quality and it has worked ever since I have owned the device from day one. I have had no issues. And it's long enough to fit from my device on my glass frames right into my pocket connected to a portable battery. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I'll look into it though and recomment if I find out anything.

      Well, that is awesome to hear. Do not be afraid to learn the ukulele as well. Such a fun instrument. Been teaching my 6-year-old daughter. Very easy to learn. No matter how much worse my vision gets I still am able to pick up my guitar and learn new things. I have been learning a few new songs I have never played before and it has been much harder to figure it out when you can't see good. But! At the end of the day I always still end up figuring it out. You're going to love playing your music. And do not be afraid to sing your guts out. It is very, very therapeutic. Even if you're not the best singer nobody needs to hear you. Lol but you might be a natural. You never know. Good luck and have so much fun!! I hope it becomes a new passion for you.

      Well that is ridiculous! Your association for the blind near you should help you regardless. Vision loss is vision loss. I know people that still have quite a lot of good usable vision and have guide dogs. I don't have one cuz I choose not to. Still, use a white cane on your own terms in your own time. Research and get a lot of info on TH-cam and good old Google!. The information is out there for all of us. There are many times I can get by without my white cane however I choose not to and I always take it everywhere with me no matter what!. Good luck and I hope you do not lose any more vision. God bless

    What is the price

    • @myvisuallyimpairedlife5674
      @myvisuallyimpairedlife5674 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The last time I checked I'm pretty sure it was $4,500. But don't let this deter you because you could always try to get it for free or by payments. I was blessed enough to get mine for free. And there is nothing special about me compared to anybody else. I just opened my mouth to my low vision specialist telling him that I would love to own the device one day. He had no clue what the device was so we got into a conversation about it. 2 weeks later I got a phone call telling me that the doctor was able to get the device for me for free through an amazing family that donated to the hospital. I did not beg for this item, I did not ask anybody to purchase it for me, but I was verbal about it and good things come to those who wait and are positive. Contact your association for the blind nearest you, tell your doctors, tell your specialists, and you never know there might be a program, a charity, or some kind of payment system that would work for you. I have said this a hundred times and I'll say it again, even though I like the orcam device and I still use it from time to time, I still don't think I would have paid this much money for it. Is very pricey. And I am not a rich individual. I hope this comment helps you. And I pray you get to own this device if you truly need it. If you want something bad enough it will come your way some way somehow.

      That's awesome that you checked out my channel. Totally appreciated! ! Sightless senshi it's a great kid, I've talked to him a few times in the past. But man oh man, does that kid have a sailor's mouth. Loves to swear lol haha Just know that the game room you saw in this video is not anything compared what it is today. I have changed so much since I have lived in my home. Little projects here and there add up. That's why I need to make a new updated video. At the time of this video I still had games and consoles and bins. Started going blind in the middle of unpacking. Still had one eye useful at the time. Got to the third PlayStation 2 shelf then my other eye decided and decided to go out. On a long-filled vacation. Lol that's me hoping for it to come back eventually. Haha But again my friend, thanks for bringing your eyes and ears to the channel. And I think you for inspiring me to make a new video. I've been lazy for the last year and a half. Enjoy the rest of your evening God bless

    I don’t know that I fully need this now. I do know that I have to prepare for less fission. Say in two years, is the price going to be much more than the 4000? I’m trying to decide if I should by now or in two years will it have more features and I Cantore than the one I have. Please give me your opinion because I really don’t know thank you love your videos I certainly can’t understand what you’re talking about

    • @myvisuallyimpairedlife5674
      @myvisuallyimpairedlife5674 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your comment, I will do the best I can to answer your question. This device is very expensive. And yes, I personally feel that the newer models will just make it more pricey down the road. The reason things for the blind are so expensive is due to the fact that our market is much smaller than say Sony selling a pair of glasses with speakers attached. We're blind, so they don't look at production numbers like other companies do. So when they build these devices they have to up their profit margin to make up for on sales. Do I think this is a good excuse, no, but this is what I have been told. Also, should you buy it now or later, that is fully up to you however, there is ways to get this device in your possession for absolutely free!! Especially, if you have time on your hands and don't need it ASAP. Take full advantage and be very, very verbal. Be verbal with your doctor, be verbal with your primary, be verbal with your association for the blind, you would be very surprised what is out there for us being blind / visually impaired that we do not even know about. Her grants, they are fundraisers, they are just good God abiding people willing to help others. When I received mine I was blessed enough to get it for free. And it was all due to the fact that I was verbal about it. My low vision specialist did not even know this device existed. I told him that I wanted to own one of these down the line in the future but they were just too expensive for me currently. He ended up looking into it on his own free time and found a way to get it for me for free. 2 weeks later I get a phone call that I was to receive this device. And the funds came from a lovely family that donated to the hospital. I was blessed by good people and that's how I got my device. I did not beg or ask in any way shape or form to own this device. Just was very verbal about how much I wanted it. After telling the story to friends in my association for the blind, more than two of them came back to me months later telling me that they also received this device for free by just being verbal. Either through a fundraiser, or a donation. So, do you want to buy it now totally up to you. I do know that my device can no longer do some of the things the newer versions can do as they make you pay for updates. But mine does exactly what I need it to do. So buying the newest device with all the coolest features doesn't always make a huge difference. Sometimes it is better just to pay less for the older model. But again, it is totally up to you and your own personal decision if you want to buy it now or later. Do I think the device is worth $4,000. Personally I have to say no, our phones can do a lot of the things this device can do however it gives us the benefit of being hands-free. It's the feeling of feeling independent again. But that's not me knocking the device, I still think it's worth owning due to the fact it did make my life much easier. I don't use it each and every day especially now due to covid. But now that things are calming down we get out more and I tend to forget to bring it with me. Lol plus I have an amazing wife that always reads the menu to me. But I need to start being a better husband and bringing the device out. Give her a break. Lol let her be mentally conscious about her own appetite. Haha I hope I was able to answer your question. And hope to hear more comments from you in the future. God bless and may your week and your weekend and every future day after that be an amazing one.

      Yeah, when I started my TH-cam channel me and many others became one big knit family on TH-cam. Most of us blind TH-camrs keep in communication from time to time. But remember Brian, before I started my TH-cam channel I got on the good old TH-cam to learn about my blindness amongst other things that I was going through. I came across videos from people like Sam from the blind life, how Casey sees it etc and you my friend. You guys were all inspiration for me. Starting this TH-cam channel was definitely the most therapeutic thing I did for my blindness. Hopefully I can get the time and willpower to make more videos soon. Thanks for checking out the channel.

    How to charge

    • @myvisuallyimpairedlife5674
      @myvisuallyimpairedlife5674 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is two different ways that you can charge your or cam device. Both ways utilize the charging cord / cable that comes with the unit straight out the box. First you can use the cord and plug it into a USB outlet or to a USB adapter for the regular outlet on the wall and let the or cam charge for at least two hours. Second, you can use the same cord out the box and plug it into a USB portable battery charger. This will not only charge your orcam it'll keep it at full charge while utilizing the battery life that comes with the charger itself. In other words you could get in full 8-hour work day depending on what portable battery you're using. Hopefully this answers your question.
