5 Lessons From My First Marathon | San Diego Marathon 2024
What you plan for isn't always what you get. Sometimes, it's better. In this video I share with you 5 important things I learned after running 26.2 miles for the first time in my life.

      Lol. No, there isn't really a system. When you tie the bow it'll wrap over the vertical loop that's on the tongue. As you can see in the thumb, I have the laces going under the loop. But I don't tie the bow under it. I guess you could, but it's probably not worth it.

    First of all great achievement finishing the marathon. The time u finished in is on average for marathoners. I think you didn’t get the euphoria when you finished was because you thought you should have easily finished below 4 hrs. @dinterowski I like the responsiveness over the pro 4s. It’s more fun but I had to consider the distance and time on my feet. I think after about 3hrs I would have had a hard time since they aren’t as stable. It’s a good thing because the last 3 miles or so in San Diego are on the highway so the road is cambered. That section was brutal even with the pro 4s.

      I know where you’re coming from. I’m actually a little injured now. I had a slight case of shin splints before the marathon. It didn’t bother me during the race but it did feel sore afterward. I went back to running this week and it feels worse so I’m taking it easy again. I think as long as you’re listening to your body you’re doing the right thing, regardless of the distance you run. Hope you keep recovering and running!

      @@writeorrun They were in the shadows a while but with the 160x 3.0 pro they rocked the marathon scene, the regular 160x 3.0 is the training variant or race option for us slower runners. In the east asia running scene they are everywhere on the podium. The 5.0 pro sadly is hyper aggressive and nothing for people slower than 3h (they wanted too much at once it seems...) To say it short: I have over 40pairs of running shoes, study in this field and work in it aswell - I got 5 pairs of 160x 3.0 as my workhorses, its light, kinda stable, soft and plush without being mushy and you dont notice it on your feet at all. • @writeorrun
      @writeorrun หลายเดือนก่อน

      lol. I think it depends on how long you’ve been running and how much distance you’re used to covering. For me, once I’ve gotten a few marathons under my belt, I think I’d be comfortable training in these to run the 26.2 miles. But as of now I prefer something with a more stable platform to run that far. If I were a solid heel striker at any distance or speed, I personally wouldn’t use these for a marathon.

      That’s difficult for me to say. I’m a lot of places I read that neutral shoes work well because there isn’t extra support on the inner side do the foot. If I were you I’d try that or a stability shoe that really locks in the heel. But I think I’d try something out in the store first. I still wear out the outer edge of my shoes first, too. It depends on how excessive it is. I’m sorry I can’t be more help on that. I just noticed that the mild stability helped my knees feel better and my feet. The wear pattern didn’t change as much

    is GK 30 better than GK 29 in terms of arch support. Because i am a excessive pronator and felt no benefit with an so-called arch supporter of another shoe manufacturer, and having trouble to settle btw those two? thanks

    • @writeorrun
      @writeorrun 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have not tried the 29s. From what I understand they redesigned the arch support in the 30s, which is the first version I tried. I didn’t realize I needed the support and to me, as I’ve heard many others say, it feels subtle, but effective. That’s why I feel like can use them regularly for recovery runs. In your case it may not be enough. But if you have the chance, maybe you can test them out first before you buy. The 31s are coming out soon but it looks like they didn’t change the midsole except for its outer appearance. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.

    I have these shoes and love them. I’m no expert runner (soccer player getting into running on the side), but totally agree about fit! I’ve seen so many reviews about running shoes saying a thumbs with space is good but like you I disagree, and I agree about half a thumb or half a cm space is good. I’m my size 9 US they fit perfect. They are very comfortable shoes, and have good bounce and are light weight too. Love the cushioned heel too. Keen to try now either the pro 4 or adios pro 3 for my first supershoe to go for even more speed on my runs! But the speed 4 are great

I’m going to make a review soon but as of now I feel like they may be the ones I wear for my first marathon. The adios pro 3 is also really good but I got them last year so I wasn’t able to do any really long runs at that time. I think they may be releasing the adios pro 4 soon so you might want to wait for that release. Although it would mean you could get the 3s at a good discount. 👍👍

    • @writeorrun
      @writeorrun 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It will be the part of your foot that hits the ground first. Sometimes you can tell based on the wear pattern of your sole. I tend to be a heel striker so I notice that the rubber on the heel of the shoe looks more worn out compared to the rest of the sole. If you’re a mid or forefoot striker I think the pattern will look even across the entire bottom. If you’re still not certain you can get a gait analysis at a shoe store and they’ll tell you exactly what kind of runner you are. Anyone else have any tips to figure it out, please don’t hesitate to respond. I hope this helps!

So like leg days would also be interval/tempo days and faster easy run day before long run would also be a mix lower upper day in the gym. I'm starting to rely on cushioned shoes than the typical daily trainer as I find it less fatiguing and can still keep following the schedule when not fully recovered before rest days. I have the hyperion tempo and it's fine but I do feel the firmer midsole becomes harsh when I'm deeper into my training so I usually cut back the pace or sets on leg days.

      It's really a fantastic shoe for tempo and intervals. It's great that you're doing weight training, too. I recently understood the importance of strength and conditioning. I got a minor injury a couple weeks ago and I'm pretty sure it's because I haven't done any weights. I'm still not back to 100% of training schedule. But I'm definitely adding 1-2 days of s&c going forward. Keep up the good work!

      @@writeorrun How did you get injured? Maybe you've pushed too hard? Sometimes it doesn't feel like you've pushed hard, the fatigue just accumulates without you feeling it and the body is good at adapting so you won't feel it. I had to stop recently as well, gladly no injury but it was like I'm injured coz I'm doing something crazy like bodybuilding and running feeling like 200% on 100% each but in actuality is just divided to 50/50. If I was smart about it, I would have known I was being a jack of all trades master of none, gains slower on both and I should have been patient about it but I did push harder, I kept pushing hard and it was too quick for me and it was all sudden, running gait was off like I don't know how to run, I can't lift my normal weight even decreased reps and weight I would even be tired after a few sets. I was stupid to keep going even with the decrease in performance and on the last day I planned for a slow long run with a bad gait, my calf went off, my knee buckled so I fell. It was a month's rest after that. Now I'm sticking to taking it slow, like dialling back down the reps/weight, distance, pace while at 4-6 days a week for both with slight gradual increases per week or two weeks, sometimes rest a few days. It doesn't feel like I'm pushing hard but is better at improving slowly and gradually. There is a better approach if overall you're just focused on running with adding weight training to your overall training unlike mine and these hybrid athlete influencers. Most advice I found is you can do maintenance for lifts only and have running as a priority. Lifting is just supplementing your running and if managing time is hard on some days/weeks then you just cut or stop the lifts and not sacrifice running. Like doing 70/30 or 80/20. That way you won't slack on lifts, you can and have to max out on those but won't worry about it getting in the way since it's only minimum 2 days a week with only the important lifts to help your running.

      Thanks for asking. I ended up with a lower back injury. I had bad one about 2 years ago and since then I would stretch for 15min the days I ran. But I had stopped doing that for about 3 weeks prior to getting my latest back injury. I also started upping my mileage because I'm getting ready to run a marathon and I think it was too much for my body. Thankfully, after about a week of doing nothing I'm back to running now. I'm still not exactly where I left off, but I'm not in a hurry because the last thing I want to do is get injured again before my marathon, which his in about 8 weeks. I think rest/sleep is crucial to not getting injured. My schedule is to run 5 days/wk, but it's still difficult getting enough sleep when you have kids. lol. Thanks for the advice. And don't forget to listen to your body when you feel like something is slightly off. That's definitely a sign to take it easy. I keep reminding myself that life is like a marathon. You have to play the long game.

      @@writeorrun Glad you've recovered, probably was due to upping your mileage hope it won't come back and get worse. Same with my friend who does triathlons and also had a back injury. Because of him I stopped doing deadlifts, keeping squats and rdl's which are enough spinal load already especially with the impact forces on running. I'm following him adding some core work to keep it tight and protect my back as well. Anyway, goodluck on your upcoming marathon.

    This or the new balance rebel v4? I’ve ordered both so deciding between them or keeping both as a rotation!!

      I haven’t had a chance to try the rebel v4. I have heard good things about it. Both have had good reviews but I’ve also heard some say that both foams die early. I haven’t experienced that yet with the Novablast and I’m around 100 miles. If you do try both, please feel free to share your thoughts. I’d be interested in hearing them. Good luck!

    • @writeorrun
      @writeorrun 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Honestly, I don’t know. Support shoes always seem to focus on overpronating. I would look into shoes that use a guide rail system, the ones that use higher sidewalls along both the inner and outer edges of the heel. That would seem to help either scenario. I wish I had a better answer for you.

      Actually, that’s a really tough question. Only because I’d vote for the deviate nitro 2 for every kind of running, except for walking. lol. I don’t know if I like feeling that plate as I walk. Maybe for short walks but I’m not sure. It did feel less noticeable compared to the first one I walked with them. But you can still feel it. I guess you could get used to that feeling eventually. Then you’d be ready at all times to make a quick getaway. lol

      @writeorrun 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think if you want the best time for short races, even for longer races, I’d have to choose the deviate nitro 2. It’s just a better shoe. The only drawback is the slightly higher price. But it’s been out for a while so you should be able to find them discounted somewhere so def keep an eye out if you’re interested.

    For daily training deviate nitro 2 or velocity nitro 3?

    • @writeorrun
      @writeorrun 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Personally, I would decide based on the amount of time I spend on my daily run. If I were going on a fairly short, steady run like ~30min, I would choose either one. But if it were longer than that, I'd definitely choose the Deviate Nitro 2 because it has a thicker midsole. Overall, the Deviate 2 performs better, as well. Hope that helps!

    I'm curious if you tried the Asics Gel Nimbus 26 and how you'd compare that to the Novablast v4, given that these two shoes are sort of "siblings" to one another.

    • @writeorrun
      @writeorrun 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have tried the Nimbus 26. Despite their midsoles being made of the same foam, ff blast+ eco, they feel quite different. I get more response and propulsion from the Novablast 4. I mentioned in the video that I think it's due to the design of the undersole. The Nimbus feels like you're sinking in and there's noticeably less return in the energy. It just feels highly cushioned and protective, but more clunky than the Novablast. The Novablast also feels well-cushioned, though, which I think makes it more versatile. I hope that helps.

    Trying running without socks. I have ran without socks for years and have never any issues with blisters, excusive calluses etc.. You may need to slowly transition to no sock running to toughen your skin in friction areas.

    • @writeorrun
      @writeorrun 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have gotten that advice before. I'm sure the sock liners aren't a problem, but I do wonder about getting any irritation from parts of the upper. Maybe I'll give it a go once it starts to get consistently warm.
