- What you plan for isn't always what you get. Sometimes, it's better. I prepared for the DOMS, Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, after running my first marathon, but I never expected a serious case of what I call the DOLLs, Delayed Onset Life Lessons. In this video I share with you 5 important things I learned after running 26.2 miles for the first time in my life.
Write or run, let's get it done!

I ran my first half marathon here as well. I was really excited and wanted to take it slow on my first. After that, finishing in under 2 hours was a huge accomplishment for me. Now, I'm aiming to complete my first full marathon in Long Beach. My goal is the same as yours - to finish in sub 4 hours or just to finish. Running can be both addictive and tough at the same time.
@@ChickenRunner9 That’s fantastic! You should feel proud of yourself for going for it. You never know what you can do until you try, right? I was hoping to run the Long Beach marathon this year, too, but my shin splints are not getting better, unfortunately. I wish you all the best in that event and most important, stay healthy so you can keep doing what you love!
Congratulations! Great accomplishment. I haven't run my first marathon yet but I have a feeling I will go through my share of pain excitement and lessons that I will have to learn. I am both happy and worried that next year will be the year. I keep questioning myself philosophically why do i need to do this and hoping the finish line will have that answer. However realistically I am sure like you all I will be preoccupied with at that moment will be pain and exhaustion. Great video indeed. Now give us more shoe reviews please
Thanks! I wouldn’t over think it. I always remember what the mother of my old roommate once said. More or less, some things you can’t go in with just one foot. You have to jump in with both feet. 👍
First of all great achievement finishing the marathon. The time u finished in is on average for marathoners. I think you didn’t get the euphoria when you finished was because you thought you should have easily finished below 4 hrs. I remember you said that your ego wouldn’t let you get passed by a granny marathoner. That granny put in a lot of work for years to go at that pace. Let the feeling of I’m better than these people. Happiness will follow once you let go
Yes I think you are right.
I run my first marathon for 3:19 last October at age 37. But training for it was so hard I got injured 3 times. My hip is still not right even now. I don’t think it’s really healthy. I will stick with shorter races in the future. Marathon is too demanding
I know where you’re coming from. I’m actually a little injured now. I had a slight case of shin splints before the marathon. It didn’t bother me during the race but it did feel sore afterward. I went back to running this week and it feels worse so I’m taking it easy again. I think as long as you’re listening to your body you’re doing the right thing, regardless of the distance you run. Hope you keep recovering and running!
Finally, which shoes did you run the marathon in? ;)
I ran in the Saucony endorphin pro 4. They were solid the whole time! Very comfortable and I didn’t get any hot spots. I’m really glad I chose to wear those for my first marathon.
@@writeorrun why not cielo x1?
@dinterowski I like the responsiveness over the pro 4s. It’s more fun but I had to consider the distance and time on my feet. I think after about 3hrs I would have had a hard time since they aren’t as stable. It’s a good thing because the last 3 miles or so in San Diego are on the highway so the road is cambered. That section was brutal even with the pro 4s.
