With all due respect, it is not possible for US to protect Taiwan directly. The cost will be far too high for us. As to China, it is the fundamental sovereignty issue and they don’t really care how many people will die when they consider taking Taiwan and US intervenes. And, what do you think Russia will do when the war breaks out ? Japan, on the other hand, if they join US force, it probably will be the end of Japan as a country (consider China’s historical resentment toward Japan, as well as the very likely joining fight from North Korea. )

I don't understand why this fellow thinks the Russians are killing more Ukranians than the Ukranians are killing Russians. This is contrary to almost all the people who are in a position to know the truth, and it flies in the face of what you can deduce from the fact that if this was true Ukraine would have already been defeated, as it is very limited in manpower.

Doesn't it seem like we are controlling the ATCMs ? Primarily because the missiles are only being fired at approved targets. If the Ukranians had control there would certainly be attacks on unapproved targets, it's the chaos of war.

There are two points, first point is communism is not democracy, to dispute this statement, l would admit an error, communism is a part of democracy, there still are countries such as France and Turkey, where communists play a role in the democratic process. Another point is United States is not at war with Russia, "Is effectively at war" mean we are very close to a war between USA and Russia. Communism is the greatest fear of the west, because if communist parties get to power in a democracy it means that the state would get more power and private entreprise would be left with diminished power and capitalists don't like that, therefore they say that communism is not democracy. Communism as a part of democracy is thus unacceptable in the west. Hungary during the Sovietunion was the most "open" east-european country, although it was obliged to be a communist country, it had the most western-oriented approach to being a communist country. Today Hungary together with Turkey are one of two countries, who still have diplomatic relations with Russia that can be used to begin negotiations for a peaceful solution and bring an end to the Ukraine war.

The problem is not that the west is at war with Russia; we are not at war with anyone. What no one seems to be able to get through to leaders in the Ukrainian/Russian conflict is that a sovereign state i.e., Ukraine, cannot now or ever be overtaken and absorbed into a neighboring country just because it is stronger. Russia keeps banging its head on the wall saying it just ain't so, but Russia has signed multiple treaties stating that it would never invade a sovereign country. Our hands are tied because we have our values and what I think President Putin needs is an off-ramp so that he can exit Ukraine in dignity and this is what Professor Sachs may be able to do. Professor Mearsheimer is an excellent observer of international affairs and breaks down for us in bite-sized chunks, how the world of the superpowers works. What would be good is for Professor Mearsheimer to go to Russia and have a news conference with President Putin. What no one seems to understand on the Russian side of the Ukraine war is that Russia itself has signed multiple treaties saying it would never invade a foreign country i.e., a sovereign state. We are in a bind in the west because we cannot let anyone---including people threatening to use nuclear weapons to get their way---to take over a soverign country. Professor Mearsheimer is respected in America and Russia and in Europe and other regions of the world; he could go there and discuss this seemingly intractable Ukrainian conflict and find a way for Putin to have an off-ramp. Because this is the real deal, isn't it? Putin is in too deep and the only way out for him is what he keeps threatening to do: use tactical nuclear weapons.

Once in awhile, we need to see if we ought to reset something in our life - reset the computer to get a clean slate, reset our lifestyle, like stop smoking or drink less alcohol, the world has reached a state where it is time to reset.
