Is he saying the US should give up its Middle East foothold, or that it should readjust its alignments? Sure, I personally don't get why the US needs to be so anti-Iran, considering the Iranians have proven themselves to be much more rational actors. Like, why can't Israel just adopt the 1967 borders and be done with all this conflict? It's willing to risk its own citizens' lives to sustain its expensive, immoral, apartheid structure?

Controlling the middle east, a project that Bush father started more seriously in the 90's is an old project of the US that now has been renovated as means to stop China which is highly dependent on oil imports. The situation in Ukraine was from the start a project to weaken Europe of ever coming together as a proper whole...sadly an easy job to accomplish given how much division and stupidity runs Bruxels. The situation with Ukraine is is EXACTLY the OPPOSITE of what it looks like...the unachievable aim of strengthening Europe economy through buying Ukraine, must be understood as a means of delaying, obstructing and literally compromise the entirety of the European project! Given this is not at all hard to understand by a province idiot like me one is forced to conclude most political structures in Europe are heavily compromised just as the US are in relation to Israel influence! The idea that there is any semblance of Democracy around the world is an ABSOLUTE joke starting with the media which is a necessary condition for it to work at is bare minimum...
Now given how US foreign policy always suffered from Asperger syndrome the coming together of the Global South was heavily underestimated...the only solution for the West now is Global war made at all costs and without any boundary. Given the South has had for a good while and will have even more in a short future access to nuclear weapons my fear is that the West out of pride and sheer desperation rather go down swinging then accept the Roman Empire has ended for good!

Let me share an embarrassing story that is analogous to the situation Zelensky finds himself. When I was a brand new faculty member at a liberal university I had previously worked in industry. Because of my industrial background when the department chair introduced himself because of both his position and what he said I assumed he was my "boss". Almost immediately he started to bad mouth two of the tenured faculty members. He said they were the ones holding the department back and was confident that under his guidance, he, I and a third new faculty member would "make the department great again" to steal a phrase. Admittedly my ego got the best of me. Long story short - he had no more control over me than the two faculty members who I had now successfully alienated, when he realized his plan did not work he did a one eighty saying "how lucky we were to have those two faculty members" and finally he threw me under the bus. I got tenure but I paid for those errors for the rest of my career. Sorry, Zelensky, it happens.

This analysis is strictly rooted in geopolitics. Mearsheimer ignores the influence of the new paradigm of a multi polar peace through development system such as the BRICS. Mearsheimer can not get this in his head. This is why he continues to define any solution in the context that created this crisis...stupid geopolitics.

Mearsheim is clearly very smart. I wish his interviewers would challenge him more. The idea that Russia is winning now and Ukraine cannot hope to change the course of the war makes sense.
However, by the same logic, Lincoln should have negotiated with the South in 1862, Churchill should have conceded WW2 to Germany in 1940, China should have negotiated with Japan in 1937-1938. The US should have accepted defeat in the revolution after being driven from New York and Philadelphia. Wars can be one sided at times but the outcome is often not so clear, so early. No one thought the USSR had a chance in October of 1941 . . . Germany was steamrolling Russia at the time in a way that no has done before or since. 1812 is another example. Napoleon had routed that same Russian Tsar how many times before he invaded in 1812? His own generals were gravely concerned retreating endlessly would lose the war.
It just seems Mearsheim has a bit of a fatalist streak to him.

  • @zxbn4566

My thoughts parallel Professor Mearsheimer's on there being cause for concern about impending global war. I am constantly reminded how in school history lessons it was laid on heavy that leading up to 1918, European states segregated into two mutually hostile alliances, and it just needed one quirky trigger (the assassination of an archduke in the Balkans, as it happens) to set the continent on fire. Currently, both NATO on one side and China and Russia on the other are busy rallying smaller allies into two pan-global mutually hostile alliances. As he says, the fact that there is no chance now of Russia, China and the US cooperatively putting pressure on a belligerent rogue state like North Korea highlights how far we have already gone down that path.

That we're in a hopeless situation sure seems right. The Russians are maintaining the tension from a superior position, seeking the right transition to the endgame. We may anticipate arriving there overextended, with the Russians having superior mobility.
We should seek a drawing theme, if any exist, and maneuver towards it. Even an inferior draw registers the same half-point, and may yet hold out hope for a respectable final score...

In conclusion Netanyahu walks a tightrope relying on the right wing fanatics Smotrich and Ben Gvir to prop up his government. The majority opposition parties within Israel oppose the Netanyahu government and realize that the only realistic option for peace is to get rid of this man and and his right wing clique. Netanyahu has long ago lost the popular mandate for the war , therefore as leader Netanyahu has basically resorted to undemocratic tactics to cling to power in Israel which Washington knows and has tolerated.

Mearsheimer again makes a fool out of him self, So he thinks that (small) Russia would Win this war, Against Ukraine+Nato(32 countries)+Australia+S Korea+Japan ? Countries that have 25+ Times Russias GDP. Its Like Saying That Germany could win against the Allies (incl Sovjet) in WW2, When Germany Failed to secure a Fast Victory ? It was doomed to loose.Germany could hold out for some time, they could win some battles, they could make allies pay dearly for every step. But as long Germany could not split the allies? Then there where no Chance they could win or have a stalemate. The same is the Case here. USA/Nato/West is not on War fotting, war production is just getting started, we barly spend 2 % of GDP on Defence (While Russia is now on 7%). We can continue to Support Ukraine at this leavel forever, while Russia can´t continue spending most of its budget on war for more than a few years. The Only Hope Russia/Putin can look forward to is that Trump (Putins agent) could get elected in November. But if that dosen´t happen ? then its game over for Russia.
