BMW F10 M5 Engine BUILD - Part 5 - THE UNEXPECTED END
Unfortunately things took an unexpected turn and we had to say goodbye to the M5. Not exactly the happy ending we were expecting however the car had much more issues than a simple blown engine and the owner decided not to spend any more money and just take the car back.

how do you clean the oil pick up tube during oil change??
There are two pick up tubes on the oil pump - you can access the lower one if the lower sump is removed, you then simply unscrew the tube from the pump and clean it if needed - the Upper pickup tube cannot be seen or cleaned unless the bottom of the engine (upper pan) is disassembled.

After you grind these cranks, do you need to get the journal’s surface hardened?
No, they just ground it to spec keeping in mind the new bearing clearances
I am enjoying your video. Why did this engine need a rebuild in the first place?
It was blowing a lot of smoke and had high oil consumption - we found damages (scratches) to two cylinder walls
N63/S63 блок двигателя одинаковые?
👍
please tell me what gasket you used? I can’t figure out if I need a plus sign 1.05MM (+0.3) or a regular one
Hi, if you had any work done and material removed from the block or cylinder heads, you will need a thicker gasket (1.05mm) - if you just cleaned everything and put it together you can use the regular one (0.75mm)
5min😂😂😂 you mean 500min
🤣 the video has 5 minutes ! If you’re taking the engine out for the first time it could take two days or more.
Sleeving the block has the downside because cast iron does not dissipate heat as well as aluminum. This is why Alusil is superior to sleeved blocks.
The engine coolant is there for that reason. Sleeving the block with iron is a win-win - it gets stronger and holds much more boost without risking damages to cylinder walls
Was that dry ice....?
No, it was a full rebuild
@@dnl35projects I'm sorry I was referring to your cleaning of the radiators,
No torque specs shown
It’s impossible to do that in 25 minutes - watch the F10 M5 series for more details
@dnl35projects does this rebuild apply to the n63tu1 ,2,3 engines as well?
The rebuild process is almost identical however these engines have some different parts and torque specs as they evolved

Did you reset all engine adaptations and performed the valvetronic startup ? The vamos sprockets have no adjustment, just the engine timing itself.
@@dnl35projects I have, I took the solenoids out, tested them, cleaned them, they work fine, when I have time I will open the engine again and have a look at the cams, I am glad it started
how many days need for repair it ? engine rebuild?
Hi, it’s a complicated logistic specially because of the machine shop, sometimes they take a week to do the sleeves sometimes a month. If it wasn’t for that I’d say 1 week to remove the engine, dismantle and clean all parts then another two weeks to put everything together and have it running properly.
Hi do i have to buy all the stud for the crankshaft new or can put the same one and were can y buy them thank you
The bottom ones I usually re-use and only really buy the head bolts new - I buy most of the parts from FCP euro or ECS Tunning in the USA 🇺🇸

Hello, I am from Brazil and I follow your videos. I rebuilt the engine of a 2014 BMW X5 with the N63 engine, and after the rebuild, the car started misfiring on cylinders 5, 6, 7, and 8. It seems like there is a lack of oil in the head on that side. What do you think could be the issue?
Hi, I highly doubt lack of oil in the head would cause the misfires and given the fact that you just rebuilt it the issues are more related to either the HPFP on bank 2 or the wiring harness / plugs to the ECU. Vc é de SP ?

Thanks, it's not as hard as most people would think but it does take a lot of patience 😅
It looks like a melted plastic shopping bag that somehow got sucked in.
Yes, it's still an unknown substance
Awesome video and very informative. I have a N63TU - whats your thoughts on the lower temp thermostat and the oil thermostat bypass? Have you messed with either?
I believe these engines are awesome and just need to be serviced properly - every modification would have a side effect and in my cars I run stock BMW thermostats and just wait for the engine to warm up before driving it hard.
@@dnl35projects thanks - that's where I am trying to find any factual information on the advantages. I'm a big believer of preventive maintenance / routine maintenance. I've not had an engine like this before with the massive amounts of heat soak - but seems prior owner changed CCV system under warranty (and I believe ours has been extended). Open to any and all recommendations to keep it going strong into 100k.

The fuel injectors are a known issue on these early S63 - Check to see if you have index 12 injectors and if not that could be a cause
Just ordered one about to do major service curious if I’m missing it
I just had another one coming loose on an oil filter yesterday - It would have gone to the bin for sure if I wasn't paying attention to it
Why was the harmonic balancer on when you where torquing crankshaft
I find easier to rotate the crank using the harmonic balancer - It was just sitting there not torqued
Fun project......I want to do this.....
All you need is time, patience and some money 😂 These engines/cars are fun and will go a long way if the rebuilt is done properly.
I sent you an email, check it out

Hi, unfortunately I haven't got a video on that yet

Hello sir, I have a question. When the cylinder liners are ringed, is it advisable to rectify them or does that damage the material of the cylinder liners?
Hi, you can sleeve the whole block if theres damage to the cylinder walls
Master of masters, what brand of rings do you recommend, or some link where I can find a good quality brand, it is for Mexico. It is for the N63B44B engine
I like using Goetze rings when sleeving the block however they are not available for the stock BMW ALUSIL block - Unfortunately we are using Chinese/aftermarket parts on this build (video) and there are no rings available other than the ones which come with the pistons

Hi, no hardware was changed other than the engine being rebuilt - I had a quick message from the car owner this week and apparently someone did successfully coded the car and it's now working. I'll share more details once I know exactly the issue.
What is the tool to install the pistons, where did you buy it?

So what you do is addivctive fun and we are learining alot from your experiance, thank you again.
Excellent work, you're a mechanic i would trust unlike many in New Zealand, they lie, steal, and give false information just to get more money out of you, and i'm not making this up. I have caught many mechanics out, one recently who stole my Hengst oil filter when going an oil change, and put in some cheap after market filter, while i was in the workshop. He couldn't give me any explanation why he swapped them, but excuses. What did he put in the filter before installing it really worries me as the car is an X5m S63. Best from NZ
Thank you ! I'm sorry to hear that but here in Sydney there are also a few unreliable mechanics ( I know of ) who are always trying to rip people of for extra $$ but I strongly believe Karma is going to bite back at them one day ...
Have you done any sort of DCT adaptation? Sounds like something is disconnected on the transmission side and the vehicle is defaulting to manual mode, which your car is not.
The car owner had a coding App on his phone and did a bunch of attempted to code everything when the engine died last year - Im certain something was changed or coded out as there is only one plug going into the transmission and that was connected properly.
BTW, how long did it take to remove the engine?
Hi, I did it in a day because I like to remove the front bumper to check the radiators, coolers and wiring harness. With proper equipment it could be done in less time
Thanks, much appreciated. Let us know if you see the M5 again. Cheers
Great video thanks - hey just wondering whether you found any damage to the turbos after all that cr@p wen through? Thanks
Thanks, the turbos were a bit worn with some play on the shafts but that gunk did no go through the turbos at all otherwise it would get caught in the intercooler
Great content on the S63! I know its a shot in the dark but I have a 2020 X5M with the S63TU4 motor and I've been chasing down a intermittent misfire in cylinder 6 that only happens during idling. Motor has 40K miles on it and never been tuned. I've thrown every part i could think of and has made no difference. I can monitor the misfire counter using an app and can see only #6 misfire count go up to 50-60 within a minute or two then resets back to zero. No misfires once i'm moving and it only happens if i idle for more than 30 secs. No CELs and no fault codes stored but i could feel it slightly while sitting inside the car. At this point i've changed the following parts with all OEM BMW and the misfire remains. All Spark plugs, all Coil packs, both primary O2 sensors, Low pressure fuel pump in the gas tank, #6 fuel injector. Car drives absolutely perfect and has been babied since day 1 when I bought it new. Any ideas what i might be? Its strange that it only happens at idle and only that cylinder. Anything guidance is much appreciated!
Its very hard to say without checking the car in person, it could be the wiring to either injector or coil - Any oil on the old spark plug ?
@@dnl35projects no oil on any of the spark plugs. All look barely used even at 30K miles. All of them looked identical. I even swapped to new OEM coil twice on that same cylinder and idle misfire persist. Some days it’s less and some days it does it more but I can’t seem to see any correlation with any outside factors like AC on/off, temperature, fuel etc. aside from doing it at idle it does also do it during cold starts where you can feel slight rumble. I think most BMWs I’ve had did this though
You will make another one.
Thanks ! yes, the plan is to start a series on my F90 M5 engine in September
i looking on a 2022 m550i with 17000 km on it. but it has an oil pressure light.... what could have happend. and should i get it. the price is good
That should still be under warranty unless it was tunned and the warranty void 🤣 - It could be a good buy if the engine is quiet and there’s no damage to it but I’d definitely not drive it until the issue is sorted out

Do you think the owner fried the original ecu and replaced it with a manual transmission one?
I don't think the ECUs are fried but he certainly messed up the software/data in more than one module using the coding app on his phone 😩
Hi There, what are torque settings on the oem rod bolts, 75nm is for apr
Correct, the ARP are torqued to 75Nm - OEM bolts are usually torqued to 20 or 30Nm + around 70 degrees of angle - It varies according to the engine/part number you are working on
