S63TU / N63TU Stripping out the Heads - Dismantling the valvetronic and cams F90 M5
Getting the engine head dismantled for a fresh-up - This procedure is the same for all S63TU and N63TU (only the VANOS gears are different on TU4 engines)
With the engine heads out of the car (and out of the engine) I start to dismantle everything in order to get to the bare head. This will be sent to a machine shop for cleaning then returned to me for re-assembly before we install it back in the engine (in next videos)

Nice trick, how to get free bearings 😂

hey man not sure if youll see this but do you have a link to all the coolant hoses i have a leak i cant seem to find just want to change them all
check the part numbers on ReaOEM website - Theres no package for all hoses
Did you replace any of the hoses while the engine was out? Is there any you would recommend that are hard to access or prone to failure? Or do you just replace all of them if you can?
Yes, theres a "Y pipe" under/in front of the turbos which I always replace since the Y is made of plastic and perishes easily
I left you a very long comment so I wanted to send this shorter one to you. When you had taken your car to the drag races what kind of ET were you getting? When I googled this in the past I seen some people reporting that they were faster than the speed of sound and then on the other hand could not run a away from a bus.
To be honest, it all depends on what people have driven before they try the X5M - On my last day at the drag races I got 4 runs of solid 12.5sec - that might be unimpressive to some but again, it’s a 2300kg car which means a car with 200 less HP and 1400kg could do that if not more. With all that said, the car still feel fast if you want to drive it that way
I agree with the most everything you said. I work on all my own vehicles have done that since 1986. I am just a backyard mechanic for DIY mechanic. I have been fortunate enough buy the right tools for the right job. From racing on the weekends and just doing routine maintenance to all my other vehicles and my family I can tell you I don't care what car manufacturer you buy from is that oil at the minimum should be changed at 6000 miles. Anytime I will buy a new car or a motorcycle it is very unusual for me to go over a thousand miles before my first oil change and then 3,000 after that. Believe it or not I actually have friends that want the oil out of my vehicle whenever I do a change. They know I only use the best oil and they know how much it cost. When I'm done with the oil change I put it in their pan and sometimes depending on what I'm doing I might even put it in the car for them and change the filter. You cannot have a high-performance car like a BMW M I think you're going to get away from saving money on services. Whenever you can you should buy your parts about the manufacturer used. And that doesn't mean you need to buy it from the dealership. Dearest companies like Bosch who make the fuel injectors and spark plugs and BMW has them stamp their part number and put BMW on the logo. It's funny that I just saw this video. Today is Tuesday and I am going to look at a x5m. That one is a 2012 and the seller has all the paperwork since it was brand new. Only reason selling it is that he's going back to the west coast of the United States and does not want to bring the car back with him. He would rather buy a new BMW x5m. This was a great video and hopefully people will follow what you said. Also anybody who's read down to this point need to keep in mind that when you do change that battery you have to recode your car. You can do this yourself with a cheaper scanner and sometimes the big parts stores will come out and do it for free. If you don't have it done you will start experience things that don't make sense. Your radio can stop working your blower motor for the HVAC system will stop some lights might not come on it's a nightmare. Again this comes from me being very fortunate in life. I actually have the big pro scanner so I never have to go into a dealership. Looking forward to watching more from you.
That’s good, you can save heaps $$$ if doing the work yourself
I have not removed one of these engines before, but just a question, how did you access all torque converter bolts if the engine does not turn?
The best thing about the F10 M5 is that being a DCT it does not have a torque converter and you can simply pull the engine away from the transmission. On a regular auto transmission you need to pull the whole thing out and the torque converter will slide out of the transmission, you the undo the bolts. Just be really careful not to damage the seal on the transmission when you drag the engine out and also when installing the converter back into the transmission
Is it possible to replace timing chain and guides with engine still in the car?
Yes and no. You need to remove the sump and the engine heads in order to remove/refit the timing cover - the amount of work you’ll put in is so intense I believe it’s easier to just pull the engine out as it will be easier to work
Are the N63TU engines also ticking time bombs after 100k km? I have 150k miles (approx 250k km) and they’ve never been done 😬
N63 and S63 are the same engine, with a few different things such as cams, exhaust manifold and pistons. Yes it suffers from the same issues however the TU engines are a bit more reliable - it all comes down to how often the engine was serviced and if it was trashed when cold but at 150k miles you should start considering a rebuild (they are cheaper when the engine is still running)
@@dnl35projectsI change the oil every 5k miles, the previous owners changed it every 7-8k miles. When I took the valve covers off everything looked brand new…no oil/sludge buildup whatsoever. I’m thinking/hoping mine is good…especially since I just put new injectors, plugs, coils, and a water pump along with the valve cover gaskets. 😬 Would a replacement engine from BMW be better than a rebuild? An N63TU long block is only a bit over $5k US and I’d think a rebuild wouldn’t be too much cheaper than that 🤔
Hello great video. But you didn’t show how to set the manual tensioner, so the chain is at the correct tension. Can you explain that or show it. Thank you.
You fit the manual tensioner the same way as the normal one, but tight the adjuster bolt with your hands until is tight (manual says 0.5Nm) - As long as there’s no slack in the chain you’re good
Thank you.
Hello great video. But you didn’t show how to set the manual tensioner, so the chain is at the correct tension. Can you explain that or show it. Thank you.
Answered above
I'm starting my engine pull and was wondering if there's anything I should be aware of/careful with (i.e pressurized systems)?
Yes, the AC has to be emptied and the gas recovered before you attempt to break the lines - Also the fuel lines to the injectors have to be opened slowly and I recommend putting a rag around the first line being opened.
I watched this video twice thinking I missed the tightening torque of the crank bolt. I don't think you mentioned it. Do you know what it is?
Hi, yes unfortunately the owner wanted his car back and we did not have a chance to record more videos. The main crank bolt to the Vibration Damper (M18x1.5) must be tightened to 100Nm + 3 times 60 degrees of rotation ( 100Nm + 60deg + 60deg + 60deg)
Brilliant good to see you back ! Whats the plan an OEM build or something spicy?
Hi, the S63 on the F90 is already a pretty spiced up combo however we are doing a few extra bits to bump the power into the 4 digit HP 😂 Because Why Not ?
@dnl35projects brilliant news, music to our ears ! Just saw a new video by FCP Euro Media that's going over blown S63TU, an interesting video with information that I hadn't heard before.
Excellent
Thank you ?
Great video man, thanks! Hope to see a whole series on the engine assembly.
Thanks
Great video as always :D Is the internals on the F90 the same as the F10, or is it slightly upgraded on the F90? What is the biggest differences in the engines exactly?
Thanks ! Yes they are basically the same just a little bit stronger. The biggest differences are probably the turbos and intake ports on the engine head. The crank caps have 2 extra bolts each taking it to a total of 8 bolts per cap ! The oil pump and oil galeries have been optimised - From a mechanics perspective, its a bit easier to work on the F90 engine than it is to work on the F10 (externally)
Hey, do you have IG or Facebook?
dnl35_projects on Instagram but I still dont know how to use the app properly 😂
If you got 2 sets than make one good set and send the damaged set back.
That’s a smart way of buying them 🤣
hi i rebuilt the n63 engine, but car wont start if crank sensor plugged, but if i unplugged car start but very rough and then shut off, do you know why? there is #6 and #7 misfire codes and o2 sensor
It could be timing issues - did you delete the adaptations after the rebuild ?
@ I clears the code with 600$ scan tool is that what you mean or has to be programmed ecu?, also I did some searching says the flywheel not installed correctly but it only go in one way
I'm not talking about error codes. As your engine runs it will learn and reprogram itself with values for injector tables, timing, VANOS etc. When you install a new engine or do a rebuild, you need to go into service functions and "Clear all Engine Adaptations" These will delete the data stored and has nothing to do with coding or programming a new ECU
@ ok, how to do that? Is there something on Amazon to buy ?
I am so glad at the end, the car got back on the road and you did an amazing job. A lot of effort and it payed off !! 💪🏻👏🏻
Thank you
Nice video mate ! Well done !!
Thanks
Got a 2011 X5M with 243000km. Still running like a dream. Injectors and gearbox came new over the years and obviously the coolant lines a few times. Just had it serviced again and my mechanic commented on its great shape considering the km‘s. It’s taking 1l on 500-1000km and recently it has thrown a check engine light whenever it wanted me to top up oil but this was due low oil quality(previous owner didn’t do the last service for like over 20000km). They really should have there oil change every 5000-10000km latest and not like BMW recommendation ever 15000km. Anyways after fresh oil and filters no issues at all and runs incredibly good. Very happy with it. I’m aware of valve stems are a common problem though
They are great cars, just need a bit of special attention ! 👍
dont get discouraged. its business. people change their minds all the time. keep up the good work and keep the camera rolling. thank you.
Thanks ! Yes it took a few weeks but we did get an update and the car is running beautifully now - there’s a video update on the channel 👍
Ive bought a F85, oil analysis, which was excellent. Maintenance on everything and then some. As for engine heat and thermal issues, I put in downpipes and turbo blankets. Gold foil on appropriate heat shields. I did coils, plugs PCV, and anything looked faded. Had it a year, no oil loss, mapped it Stage II, added propeller shaft and drive shaft assembly bearing to bolster drive shaft. I bought it from Carvana they did most work under warranty. Car history was a lease owner, Mom. There was baby socks and pram alerts in it when I deep cleaned it. Coolest and funnest car project ever. M cars are real deal.
Great to know that ! The drive shafts reinforcement is definitely something I’ll look at (I’m currently unfamiliar with it)
I'm chasing oil leaks on my 2010 bmw x5m (s63). So far Im doing the VGC as well as the oil separators. Whats confusing me I have oil all over the injector rail on both sides of the engine. Are these engines known for having leaks around the intake manifold. This is my first s63, so Im learning as I go. Thanks in advance
It could be the valve cover gasket
How are the parts holding up?
Still doing fine ! I haven’t seen car for the past month and a half
Hello, I just rebuilt my s63 engine in my m6 and also my x6 n63. I installed a new turbo pump on the m6 and vacuum bled. on the x6 re-used original and vacuum bled with your suggestions from this video. but still have faults 2ea9 and the x6 will show overheating even when its cold.. I can hear the new pump work on the M6 when its hot and I turn off the car. But I do think the x6 pump is not working and may be seized and need replacement. Do you have a specific time you vacuum bleed it or any other suggestions? And now that its filled with coolant do I drain it completely again and start over. Any tricks?? thanks for the great videos!!!
I usually leave it on vacuum for at least 10 minutes before filling with coolant - It could be a wiring issue if the pump is new or the new pump has failed - it could still be working but not sending the signal back to the ECU
Bought my 2011 with X6M 150k km, its at 205k km, so far had the coolant leak, I have an injector leak currently, bought the tool to redo but Im having Vanos issues so it on hold currently, just haven't had the time, did an oil change and found the oil filter collapsed and part of the mesh screen missing inside the filter, Im concerned that it is plugging up some oil passage as my all my Vanos are throwing a code almost like both timing chains jumped, it strange, it just happened one day, my car doesn't smoke. Doing a rebuild is in within my skill, If you have any information as to how and where the oil flows that would be great or possibly where the metal mesh in the filter could get hung up like possible the filters in the vanos? great video, thanks
You’re correct, if something bypass the oil it will get stuck on the vanos solenoid screens - you could be getting the difference in oil pressure
I dont think you can compare an suv to a sedan honestly. How is the x5 going today? Any issues?
20k kms on the car so far with no issues !
@@dnl35projects ahh good stuff man. I have an 09 tourareg v6 diesel. It's soooo good. But yeh if it needs work, its a pain to get into the engine etc. I always like wagons and suvs, and keen to get one of these bad boys. I wanted an R50, but covid doubled their prices and that's why I got the diesel. So still keen to get something fast and suv. Anyway, great video man.
man id S85 swap it and rock tf on with it…..
That would sound awesome for sure
What caused the factory engine to fail?
A tune caused the engine to bend a rod creating a ticking noise - The car was taken to a local shop which diagnosed as a lifter issue and replaced a bunch of things on the engine head, while doing that they forgot something inside of the engine which blocked the oil pickup pipe causing the engine to seize
@@dnl35projects wow , ensurance ? did they pay the owner ?
Thanks for these videos! Just got X5M e70, excited!
Great ! The more money you spend on it now, the less money you'll spend in the future 😂
@ 😂 I’ll have videos about all that posted soon
Last BMW built by engineers. Own one since 2020. Bought it with 180k km on it. 250k today. This car is for someone with technical background only!
I agree
I was one of the unlucky ones. My e70 4.8i had cooling, injection, park break, transmission and transfer box issues. Sun roof leaked with previous owner rusting the fuse box and stereo amps in rear. Roof lining went then sun roof stopped working, then drive shaft and centre bearing. Spent over $12000 on repairs in a little over a year. Finally the rear diff exploded in a car park in city so I sold it for parts! Will I buy another one? Yes!! I will be having it checked over carefully before purchasing
Buy one that wasn't trashed and do preventive maintenance - Hopefully the next car is gonna be a better experience
Im going for kingtec bearing 😂. I would to see more kingtec project 😂
I'm still running a few engines to see if it's gonna hold together before doing another upgrade
Sleeve masta..ehe😂
LOL
Their is no such thing called a cheap bmw and I have a 2015 6 grand coupe at 70k Mi. and a 2023 bmw M8 at 28k miles and all I do is brakes and oil but you have to do the spark plugs at 60k and it will be fine bmws are pretty reliable now don't listen to poor people buying them and don't have money to maintaining them
I agree, if your buying for cheap you better have the money for repairs set aside
20k for the car + 15k for the engine rebuild not mention possible additional expenses. Isn’t better to just take the 35 - 40k and buy something normal?
No, because you simply cannot buy something as good with the $35k - Here in Australia $35k gets you a 30d F15
That was the best instructions on the timing then I've ever seen! Can I send you my N63TU motor? Or should I just send you the whole 750LI. (smiling)
Thank you ! We do rebuild these engines and could help you with yours if needed
Mine throwing a bunch of wet black soot on rear tailpipes and trunk changed injectors pcv valves spark plugs coils still doing the same what else should I check need help please car runs great still has it’s power it is leaking oil from valve cover because injectors had oil on them
Have you deleted the engine adaptations when you coded the new injectors ?
@@dnl35projectsI’m new to the bmw but you mean if a clear the codes?
It is very simple, but people and cognitive dissonance in choosing cars.. Buy used top class BMW for 20K = add another 20K for maintenance = add 20K running costs over 100000 kilometers. If the car has high mileage and or maintenance not serviced or hidden flaws : add another 20K. 60-80 cts per kilometer. But to be safe 1 Euro /km. If people think this is all "not true" , go ahead, break your wallet and be broke all year round.
I agree
I have a 2012 x5m I had to do a rebuild on it but after it has been running pretty good I have bought it has 107000 now have 117000 on it Also replaced 1 turbo Sav has a lot of power. THANK YOU. SIRS KEEP MAKING GOOD VIDS
Good to hear
Don't buy from north of the Western Ring Road would be my number 1 tip. Look for cars from Bayside Suburbs 😂

M FOR MAINTENANCE 😂
///Maintenace - Thats the channel slogan 😂
Great video. Would be great to see wiring setup
I'll be doing some wiring videos on the F90 M5 I'm currently building however the BMW wiring harness is pretty well made and intuitive
When I bought my 2012 X5 50i, I used your rebuild videos to fully rebuild my engine. It was the 1st engine to ever work on and your rebuild series made it real easy. 1.5 years on, I have had no engine issues. Thanks.
Great to hear ! That sort of feedback keeps us going, thanks
People buy these high performance euro SUV's and think they can maintain them like their old Toyota Kluger/Highlander and they'll be golden. It's the owners outside of the factory warranty and dealer servicing where these amazing SUV's can become turds quickly. I own a 2015 ML 63 and it's had $20k+ spent on it over the last two years, I do a lot of my own maintenance and replace the oil every 5k kms. Your X5M looks awesome, great video, keep it up.
Agree
20k in maintenance in 2 years sounds about right for a 10 year old high performance euro. Yet people freak about having to pay that amount to replace an EV battery.
Excellent
Thanks
