Angelus is pronounced "Anne Jealous"... in case you don't already know. It's mispronounced a handful of times on the show. Eventually the production team insists on their intended pronunciation.

An explosive episode that launches many plot threads forward. This episode is full of great 2-character scenes. Willow/Oz and Buffy/Giles being a couple of standouts among many.

I've seen theories about how joking about something can be kind of the "tip of the spear" to break the taboo, normalizing the thing enough to enable conversations that otherwise could not be had at all. In this particular case I also think it helps that the joke (in my eyes at least) is more about Xanders homophobia, rather than just "haha, Larry's gay". In its historical context, I think this episode handled things pretty decently. (You should have seen how other media would have handled it at the time.... Let's hope we never regress to that....)

It's interesting the perspective now versus then. It feels SO heavy handed and like such a trope now, but back then? At this point in time every single boy in every single school in America was regularly using the F-slur as an accepted casual insult. Being gay was seen as the worst thing someone could call you. There were games like "Smear the Queer" on the playground. A cool, popular TV show for teens where one of the protagonists instantly accepts another guy, one who he hated and who bullied him, as gay without throwing it in his face? And that gay character saying that he feels so much better being open about it. Saying that someone else being gay coming out and trusting him with his own experience made him comfortable to admit it himself? It's a huge thing that, yes is played for a bit of a joke, but also in playing it as a humorous side plot takes a lot of the stigma out of it. In any other show at the time, a character being gay would be scandalous and serious and played either for sexy lesbian "woooos!" from the live studio audience, or would be treated as a major life-ruining event that caused all his friends and family to turn away from him until he caught AIDS and died. Literally, those are some 90s LGBT tropes from TV. Buffy was again ahead of its time and could they have handled it better if they had almost 30 years of hindsight? Sure. I'm sure anyone working on the show thinks they could have written it better now. But all in all, it's not nearly the level of cringe that a lot of reactors (not you!) tend to make it out as being. Instead it's more like an interesting time capsule of how far we've progressed.

I feel like I'm one of very few; only one I know personally who doesn't blame Jenny at all. She was trapped; there's no sense of understanding of willingness to understand her situation. It doesn't help that it's really a poorly written storyline; feels almost like it was cobbled together at the last minute the more time passes between when I first saw it and now. For spoilery-y reasons I can't talk about the other reasons why I don't like that part of it, but the one, and the only one I feel upset by is Giles; this would likely have been the time, as in when I saw this ~ I watched Season two after I saw seasons one & three, and while waiting for my local library to have the DVDs of the second half of season four in stock ~, that I began to feel the lustre of my attraction to Giles wear off; though I don't think I noticed it at the time. I do recall that, in fictional terms, he was one of the few male characters I admired, for want of a better term. I did like the exchange between Giles & Buffy; also between her and Joyce a lot. kerk

The problem with the whole 'the 90s of it all' comment is that it wasn't a trope in the 90s. Pretty much at all, so far as I know. It's become a trope now. But it's a trope of the 2000s and 2010s. It's a much more modern iteration of homophobia. Homophobia existed in the 90s, of course, but not in the way it does now. Back then if you came out, you'd either be beaten up, or nobody was bothered. In some ways, generations that came after are much more bothered by it than we were.

"Angelus" as Angel's previous name when he was evil was first mentioned by Giles in 1x7, after checking the diaries for info on him. It's just the Latin form of the name. And then in School Hard, it was used by Spike and later the vampires in Bad Eggs. But the Scooby gang only knows him as Angel, so that's what they call him.

You're late in Season 2, so I will try to catch up for the end of Season 2. It is NUTS that your Dad only watched Angel. If you are a big fan of either show, you have to watch the other show, or you don't see the entire story of several characters. I hope that's not spoilery. You clearly already know a little about these two shows.

Larry was initially misguided in his implementation of "be gay do crime," but he came around by the end. Not the greatest example of representation in the world, but to be fair, it's also far from the worst. Given the whole "queer-coded villain" trope, there's something refreshing about his sexuality being revealed turning out to be redemptive, instead. (Not the subtlest character arc in history, but hey, if we're grading on a curve, it's quite reasonable for the time.) When you introduced your new Bingo card, the "new supernatural buddy" square did make me immediately think of Oz at the time. Your counter-arguments make sense, too, though, given that from the beginning Giles was saying that it was still human most of the time and should be treated as such. I think it could reasonably go either way.

I think MAYBE your perspective on the "problematic trope" is EXTREMELY skewed. Firstly, in the 90s coming out was big. Keep in mind we STILL have celebs ONLY JUST coming out publicly now, because THEY grew up with the stigma and did not feel comfortable being open before. Second, internalising disgust is EXTREMELY common, particularly in more religious or conservative places. And that often expresses as toxic or bigoted behaviour, or attempting to conform to a VERY restrictive gender role to "prove" something. This is ALSO still VERY common. Third, it's okay to joke about these things. Throughout this episode you joked about murdering a man because he was rude, because he was hunting monsters for the wrong reasons and he wasn't overly concerned with a werewolf's humanity. So, you feel COMPLETYELY comfortable joking about one of the most heinous crimes a human can do... but think using gay tropes in a humourous manner is somehow unacceptable. Basically, and I say this with love, you need to get a grip. Don't start privileging things bc of the meaning they have to you personally. That is EXACTLY where the censorious nonsense of evangelicals comes from. You aren't being progressive or different from them, you just use different values to inform your personal disgust at things you think shouldn't be shown bc they're "offensive" Lastly, the joke was in no way implying that Larry being gay was bad, and rather than his opening up about it might lead to him being a better person. This is 100% positive, even if it is a little dated in usage and such tropes can be cringeworthy. Personally, I see this trend all too often. Of offensive being taken and implications drawn without any real consideration of context, or of the flagrant hypocrisy as to what counts as offensive or unacceptable :P You're good people and obviously understand there is more to it... but I genuinely believe that the immediate reaction and the focus on that criticism requires some reflection. To me it doesn't seem all that much different to the reactionary homophobia. And we ALL have our trigger issues (I personally hate all of the overt misandry... honestly, start keeping an eye out for all the negative tropes and opinions about men in Buffy and medias in general. Might shock you just how ubiquitous it is. This episode shit on men a fair amount "for laughs" afterall :P... but it reflects real experience and opinion, so largely its fair game, even if it can be overused) I do think you'll actually appreciate the show's attempts (successes imo) at this kind of representation, even if some of it is clearly a product of the time. The writers played with the concept as best they could to get around censors and critics. Of course it isn't perfect, particularly if ignoring cultural context, but I think the benefits outweigh that. I personally DETEST when creators take too utopian an approach. That seems clear whitewashing to me. Represent the problems faced by marginalised people. Those stories matter. Even the tropes that demonstrate marginalised people are still people and can be shitty too :P

Yes, Oz was just chill with everything, and remember his quote when finding out "this actually explains a lot." It's like the whole town is in denial, and when confronted with "vampires are real" it throws everything into a clear perspective. And Oz mentions that Gordi bit him pretty recently, so he's not always been a werewolf, it's new to him. Also, you're meant to think Larry was the wolf because a random "dog" bit him.

Saved me looking it up because that would have bugged the hell out of me. I do love this episode, it feels like a proper introduction to Oz. He was definitely my season 2 crush back in the day. Along with Spike of course...

Oz the coolest character in The Buffyverse, not only is he a lead guitarist in an indie band, he just becomes even cooler now he has Superpowers too. Some great foreshadowing from S1 I Robot You Jane when Buffy says to Willow about her virtual computer boyfriend ' he could have a hairy back' well Oz definitely does! great comedy with Xander and Larry too. Look forward to your E17 reaction, it's a brilliant episode.

Xander outs himself concerning the hyena lie to Buffy, while also, unintentionally, making Larry believe he has outed himself in another way, to him.
