"I hate that girl" is probably my favorite line + delivery from the annointed one
"It Doesn't Matter" might well be called "The Slayer's Lament".
That little cry Buffy makes when she first swings the hammer breaks my heart 25 years later. I think everyone realizes that Buffy has to live with the fact that she died violently once, and will INEVITABLY die that way again. Like every Slayer before her.
Loved your impromptu ad for Master coffee flavoring!!! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
Poor Master, I knew him well. 😂
"if they hurt willow, i'll kill you"
and the empty threat award goes to...
He may not be capable of actually accomplishing that, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't follow through on the threat.
This was one of the first shows to really show the effects of trauma in characters and show people dealing with it. before Buffy, it was never in mainstream shows to show a character that was traumatized by their past.
"not the evil turtleneck on the child" Bless you, great line and great reaction.
The Planet of the Apes reference at the start of the episode was to the original 1968 film (which is a phenomenal piece of science fiction that I highly recommend). The newer films didn't come out until after this.
"Spankk your inner moppet." That takes me back to when the concept of everyone having an "inner child" that generated most of their dysfunctions and mental health problems was the popular theory of the day. It was common enough that Cordelia's line taps into it. Yet today you hardly ever hear anyone mention the "inner child" idea.
I definitely appreciate this episode for recognizing the trauma she would have gone through. They do not always do a great job of acknowledging trauma very well in this show, so I like this episode a lot for doing that.
Your vacation from YT went on for a while longer than expected! But that's okay, glad to see you back! And of course you're a Chaos Beast - you're the frickin' Jabberwocky! (On a totally unrelated note, Jabberwocky Books is a bookstore in Newburyport, Massachusetts, here on the Eastern Coast of the USA.)
Buffy is still 16 at this point, her birthday usually occurs near the middle of the season, and she turns 17 in season 2, her junior year of high school. Looking forward to your journey through this season. 😊
PTSD back when society and pop culture said it was having issues.
That was before they had all those Rx pills to sell for any mental issue they could slap a label on.
Mad props for the Lorelai Gilmore drop in. You're awesome! ❤
This is Whedon. Happiness is not on the menu; when it comes..? RUN! kerk
Illustrates why the show needs a Cordy: she can say out loud what Buffy's more tactful friends refrain from saying.
Eventually Anya becomes that.

I mean, tact is just... xD
By the way, the song Cibo Matto played while Buffy was harrassing Xander is called "Sugar Water" and there is a pretty cool music video for it here on YT. It was directed by Michel Gondry who also created some surreal MVs with Bjork.
"If you'd worked with us for five seconds, you could have stopped this."
How? At best, she ciuld have taken you with her to the Bronze and this particular trap wouldn't have worked. But Buffy couldn't stand guard over you every day from sunset to sunrise. They could still have picked you off one at a time just as they did Miss Calendar and Cordelia.
Yeah, they had the vampire prisoner, but Xander didn't know that.
But Xander's go-to is to put all the blame on Buffy.
The hair cut is actually the first sign we are given that Buffy is suffering from depression. That conversation of Buffy's parents is also a major sign that Buffy suffers from depression. More specifically long term or life-long depression. She is going through an episode during this episode, but her depression predates her death experience and will carry on past this episode.
Ooh yay someone in the early seasons of Buffy! You are in for such a great show, especially this season, one or two goofy episodes aside!
Poor buffy 😔
The guitarist in the band playing at the Bronze is Sean Lennon, son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Real bands are used here. Mostly. Except maybe when the band members are part of the plot.
Welcome back ! I missed your reactions. Looking forward to season 2.

Guess you just have me all night now 😆
Although I need some time for Ashoka tonight!
Hi :) I'm glad you're back. Thank you so much for this new video 👍
Well the names have all changed since you hung around
But those dreams have remained and they've turned around
Who'd have thought they'd lead ya
Back here where we need ya
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back.
Okay, my choice of American tv shows to reference gives away my age. I'm not afraid to admit it, I'm mumblety years old.
hey WB. been waiting for you to get to S2!
I'll reply one of your comments totally out of context because I don't want to spoil anything:
You'll be pleasantly surprised.
Do smaller bands play at the Bronze? That depends on what you mean by "smaller" None of the bands that played at the Bronze would fill a 60k seat stadium, but they were known at the time. This particular band, Chibo Mato, one of the members is John Lennon and Yoko Ono's son.
The bands at the Bronze tended to be up and comers. This episodes band, however, was Cibo Matto back when Sean Lennon still played with them.
I like how they kept Sean bathed in blue light the whole time.
"where she hangs her corkscrews"? huh?
I believe it's a reference to Ms Calendar's line near the end of episode 1x8, "That's not where I dangle it".
Been watching decade but this is the one episode I can immediately name the band at the bronze. Too bad everones too miserable too enjoy lol
