"I'm not going to make any predictions about the show,"
Every prediction made during the episode 100% accurate.

In reality hyenas don't have an alpha, they have a matriarch. The larger females dominate the species.

While it's not one of my favorite episodes, this one does introduce viewers to the fact that even well-liked recurring characters could die, which helps to keep the stakes high in future episodes as we're aware of the possibility of lasting consequences at any moment. Joss Whedon is not only not afraid to kill his darlings, he takes some pleasure in plotting their demise.

Thanks, great reaction. You'll find, going through Buffy, that a lot of actors got their start on this show.
And i also liked the first principle, sucked to lose him so early.

Fr as much as those kids were bullies, they now have to live with the memory of EATING A HUMAN ALIVE, which... I think I'd just die instead thank you

Yeah talk about trauma. One hopes that they might try to correct their behavior around their fellow students and get some much needed therapy. Nobody seems to get the therapy they need in this show unfortunately.

SPOILERS THROUGH SEASON 2, BUT NON-SPOILER SPOILERS THROUGH SEASON 7
I have a theory on this episode and how certain things I've seen people complain don't connect can connect, but it is head canon and you have to have seen through S2's _Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered_ in order to understand not only said small things, but elements of the character's friendships.
    The theory goes like this:
I have never liked the fact that Xander lied to Buffy and Willow about not remembering what he did as a hyena. It is a lie he will not have control over if he should ever get caught in said lie. Especially as the hyena used Xander's teenage hormones to "felony sexual assault" Buffy. With the way the lie played out Xander didn't have to say anything one way or the other. The lie seems more like a surgical strike for him to make sure it cannot be talked about again so he can mentally deal with it. The problem is that telling this lie, Buffy has to bury her issues of the hyena masquerading as her friend and sexually assaulting her. Xander would have been the only person she could talk to who might understand and/or helped with those issue and his lie unintentionally makes it so he can't help Buffy and she can't get help.
In _Phases,_ Xander will out himself over his lie in this episode. Buffy's realization of the lie plays an important part in her moving on emotionally. She doesn't directly talk to him about it, but at the end of _Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered_ she says, "You came through," to him. To me, this line indicates that because of the hyena, combined with his lying about it, and the love spell, she wasn't sure he would come through on not taking advantage of her when she, in love spell form, threw herself at him. At the point of _Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered_ she has known him eleven months, and can equate him to a horny teenage boy who doesn't react well to being turned down and dumped, and has lied about an important issue that has effected them both on how they have communicated since this reaction episode.
Buffy, Xander and Willow may start off as a trio of friends, but until _Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered,_ I don't think Xander and Buffy's friendship was strong enough to survive without Willow. The arc from this episode until then is an interesting one as Buffy and Xander's friendship grows through Xander's mistakes and faults with Buffy's forgiveness and over time.
At this point in the series, Buffy and Willow's friendship is strong as Buffy sought Willow out and Willow vouched for Xander. But, it will take eleven months for Xander and Buffy to take steps forward, and even then Buffy and Willow's friendship still seems more connected. But Xander and Buffy have a better grasp now, and a long way to go before I believe its ever as strong as his and Willow's or Buffy and Willow's.

It’s so true about dodgeball being different at every school. I’ve never played the two team symmetrical version, only an asymmetric elimination version. It’s played on a circular marking. Throwers aren’t allowed into the circle (except for the closest thrower retrieving the ball if it stops moving), dodgers aren’t allowed out. There are initally only a few throwers, minimum of like 2 or 3, depending on the number of players, size of the circle, etc. Dodgers who touch the ball in any way become throwers. The goal is to be the last surviving dodger, or to eliminate dodgers as a thrower, but there’s no formal scoring. The last surviving dodgers become the initial throwers of the next round. I’ve never seen this version depicted anywhere.

It's not that there's anything wrong with them. It's more that it's pretty miraculous that I don't get tired of ANY of the OTHER episodes.

Flutie went out way too early. An interesting episode mirroring gang culture and pressure that comes with it. One of the best episodes of S1 but stick with it, this show just matures into an incredible show in later series. We see Xander as a really nasty person once under the influence of the pack, turning on Willow with very hurtful remarks, once again showing how this can happen with peer pressure to maybe impress others. A pretty decent episode for S1. Good reaction I think the show has grabbed you now. On small technical criticism of the title is Hyenas are usually referred to collectively as a Clan, not a Pack. Anyway great X-Files reference in this episode when Buffy says to Giles 'stop trying to Scully me'.

a lot of the interesting facts about hyenas in this are actually true: hyenas prey on the weak...they don't attack stronger animals...they are cowardly...they wait until an animal is weak and vulnerable and then attack. the reason they didn;t ever go for buffy was because she is an Alpha...strong and powerful...hyena's wouldn't go for that. Willow and that other kid though...weak...vulnerable.
also yes there are african and even native american tribes that believe in gaining power through taking in animal spirits...but some of those rituals...if they are possible...supposedly are very dangerous.

It's still ok to be grossed out by Xander's behaviour, possessed or not.
He has done (and will continue to do) really shitty things. Holding anyone (even a fictional character) accountable for things they do is never wrong.
The mistake many make is to make it a general condemnation.
Some people think it makes the individual (fictional or not) irredeemable, which is ridiculous. Others assign guilt to identity ("why are men like that!" or suggesting Xander's mistakes are due to his gender) which is again... questionable (it can be fun, it can even be accurate. But a lot of the time it's just bigotry. Example of this: I work with a lot of Africans. Making fun of how they spice their food is a fun bit of banter. And they make fun of how bland British food is. Banter. But if I were to make a generalisation about their moral character based on their origin... that wouldn't be banter. It would be bigotry. One is fun based on diversity, the other is hateful. And it's really not that hard to tell the difference, imo)
Keep being honest in your reactions ^^
The worst that'll happen is a robust discussion in comments, and that's healthy too! I don't think I've ever had a "bad argument" in the Buffy fandom, despite rather glaring and fierce differences of opinion.

I agree in the most part ,but I do feel Xander gets a way rougher ride from Buffy fans for his mistakes without giving away spoilers a large number of the fan base are quick to forgive other stars of the show (both male and female) for far worse mistakes but seem to fixate on Xander's. PS before someone says I am only posting this because Xander is my fav------------ he is not, I find him both very funny and annoying at times he can show great heart and loyalty but also can be jealous and petty

I say the same thing all the time.
I find a GREAT DEAL of misandry within the Buffy fan community.
But I think Jabber is a bit hard on herself (often an indication of a thoughtful and good person)
I find I have to defend him a lot DESPITE having harsh criticisms of him myself, simply bc others are either too harsh, or too hypocritical, for me to remain silent.
Willow was always my favourite :P (so I absolutely had to overcome that "Xander is a complete moron" sentiment)
It's funny to me that things are getting better though.
Observations and criticism that would have got you labelled a misogynist a handful of years ago are now... pretty widely accepted.

The sad thing is that Xander always was, in a way, Joss Whedon's alter ego in the show.

      @@pillmuncher67
      Which is probably very revealing.
I don't think Whedon is the monster they want to make him.
But it's fairly obvious he's both egotistical AND insecure (a nasty combo)
He seems to very much look after his friends (hence the consistent collabs) while not being shy about making enemies and swinging his weight around.
An imperfect man, represented by an imperfect character.

    • @pillmuncher67
      @pillmuncher67 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@DmGray That's how I see him, too. Also, as someone who's almost his age and with a somewhat similar upbringing, I understand his sardonic humor and I see how he said things that he probably didn't think would come out as mean as they did. But at a certain point it's time to grow up and leave such teenager behavior behind. He seems to have missed that point.
