25:31 The guy from Gilmore Girls is Danny Strong. He's the Designated Nerd bit player of the Buffyverse. This is his first appearance.
He's also a two-time Emmy winner for writing the HBO political films, Recount and Game Change. He also co-wrote The Butler, the last two Hunger Games films, co-created Empire with Lee Daniels and recently developed the limited series Dopesick. Danny was also in the unaired Buffy prototype pilot.
@@Madbandit77it's like he can do anything he sets his mind to!
You're saying that Spike will develop a passion for a TV show? What a wacky prediction.
you're not nearly as clever as you think you are.
good pun
Your comment at the end about monster-of-the-week episodes building character is spot on and it really touches on why newer series, even GREAT newer series, never get to the level of shows like Buffy when it comes to character depth and progression.
In an 8 or 10 episode season you miss out on a lot of those little character development moments and scenes in those episodes that aren't solely for driving a season arc plotline along.
You've barely scratched the surface yet but by time you get to mid-season 3 or 4, you've spent more time with these characters than if you watched a full 7 seasons of Stranger Things, for example. So when something happens, when stakes are high, when people get hurt or change or die...it resonates way more. And they also have more episodes to explore those things happening slowly or the repercussions from those things, with episodes like the first one of this season where we spend a whole hour just digging into the PTSD from the S1 finale that Buffy was working through.
Gone are the days where we could have gotten a Stranger Things beach episode with Steve and Jonathon setting aside differences and having to defeat Billy in a beach volleyball tournament to win a prize that Dustin really wants for his upcoming birthday. :(
21:28 The name of the band, _Dingoes ate my baby_ was a reference to a 1980 Australian murder case of a baby who disappeared on a camping trip with her parents. It was the mother's excuse.
And later judged to be the truth. But the random catchphrase "dingoes ate my baby" became part of folklore.
Not an excuse of the mother’s, but the sad truth. Lindy was pardoned after being wrongfully convicted. But I’m sure our dear reactor, like all Australians, is well aware of the case and the dark ironic humour of the band’s name.
@@lbd-po7cl Thanks! I didn't know that
When this episode came out many OG fans felt sorry for Empata. You don't see that as much anymore.
The actress who played her said she was at a sporting event the day after the episode aired and was surprised at how often she was recognized.
Sadly, we don't even know "Ampata's" real name - she took the exchange student's name. 😢 And yeah, apparently she was aware for centuries - amazing that she isn't totally insane!
I choose to believe that she just couldn't do it to Xander, and just froze up until Buffy pulled her apart.
I've made this joke before, but... other guys might not like Willow's costume, but I'm Innuit... I'll see myself out.
Seth Green was spotted recently at an Ed Sheeran concert (don't hate him for it, someone has to go to Sheeran's concerts, as long as it's not me) and he still looks much the same, just with a little silver highlight in his beard. So unfair!
Lol yeah he was there with SMG AND Emma C.
“Seth Green from scooby doo 2” yes among other things lol
His most groundbreaking role, imo 😅
Buffy shitposters and clip editors: we definitely need a compilation of reactors dancing their different dances to the intro.
Really enjoying your reactions. Can't wait til you get to the other seasons. (Yes, Warren, you and every other subscriber.)
I don’t think she was evil. Just higher on the food chain. I imagine cows would write dystopian horror with us as the villains. And grass would write Lovecraftian fiction about cows.
I realize that killing most people would be deeply immoral, but ... Xander? Would that really be that bad?
Dingoes Ate My Baby has all their music done by Four Star Mary which is a great band and has a ton of bangers. Definitely worth listening to some of their songs that feature in Buffy, which is where I learned about them and heard them all for the first time.
There are 118 now!! Willow is so behind the times.
Actually there’s 98 natural elements. the others decay too rapidly and can only be observed when created artificially in a lab. 10 of those can only be detected in trace amounts.
I was going to say 91 natural elements but apparently they’ve discovered traces of a few more in nature since the last time i’ve looked at a periodic table. Also, actual names rather than placeholders like “unnilseptium!”
…
I swear I’m not nerdier than Willow. Really!
Buffy broke the training dummy in the first episode of the season, remember?
Spike being obsessed with a trash tv show? Nah, won't happen...
In Inca Mummy Girl we get introduced to Oz, definitely the coolest character in The Buffyverse. Nobody does laid back like Oz, his witty one liners and observations are brilliant. When he says 'you're only interested in a girl who can walk or talk' reply 'she doesn't have to talk', the look on OZ's face. I think Inca Mummy Girl one of the weaker episodes of S2, Xander showing his complete innocence and gullibility. We all feel for Willow who at this stage in the show is so meek and quiet, always feeling looked over. We all seem to forget what an awful bully and generally horrible vacuous person Cordelia was, totally putting down Willow at every opportunity throughout the early parts of the show, we see that again here. The metaphor of the show saying basically looks aren't everything, and be careful as things are never what they seem. Jonathan gets a lucky escape here along with Xander also. Xander comes through at the end and saves Willow's life. Great foreshadowing again here with Xander and his 'taste in women'.
I don't mind this episode - Shakespearean tragedy vibes making you have sympathy for a murderer. Sad all around.

No ampata tu u. Hm? No ampata to u... Labu Boinka!
"that's the foundation of the best kind of relationships"
Sure. It really should be.
But for dudes it's OFTEN a way to become romantically invisible PRECISELY because men and women can just be friends. How does one distinguish between the love of a friend and potential romantic interest? From friendliness and flirting (many women use this as an excuse just to be straight up rude to discourage men they're not interested in :P)
Again, it SHOULD be easy, but from a dude's perspective it's basically a minefield. And one that gains zero sympathy bc (if you buy what is sold online by so many angry bitter people) women are in constant danger from all men they might reject, even if those men are initially friendly.
The Willow/Xander situation is just the Buffy/Xander situation.
Sure, I sympathise more with Willow (bc of their extended friendship, and Xander's routine dickishness) but it really is exactly the same. Hell, considering the dance in 2x01 Xander is WAY more entitled to make it weird :P
I actually always appreciated that the show depicts it at least somewhat sensitively for all involved. But if friendship CAN be the foundation of a relationship, I wish people would stop pretending that being attracted to friends is weird or unacceptable. I ALREADY like the person, if they're the correct identity for me to be attracted to, the chances are I am. Even if I have no intentions.
I do get the double standard though. Women rarely deal with rejection but DO deal with men "not reading signs" or "ignoring flirting" etc. It's definitely something that triggers empathy in women that doesn't really extend to men who really do deal with it all way more often :P
But it's a double standard that frustrates bc so many women express disgust or anger at unwanted attention. So it's a case of wanting it both ways ^^
For me, the only time I've been offended at attention from a gay man was when I was 17, awkward and sexually frustrated. Hit on by two blokes who ignored my discomfort. I felt homophobic for a few weeks before I processed it and got over it. Hell, the only guy that has ever inappropriately touched me is a married father of 2 who was VERY drunk and doing it to EVERYONE (I was sacrificed to keep him away from the girls) and even he stopped when I gave a firm no (which still gets joked about amongst our friends "not below the belt!" will get immediate laughs)
I've been propositioned by more than one gay friend and I'm still completely comfortable cuddling them as a straight guy bc I trust them not to cross my boundaries.
So when I criticise people for being kinda... douchy... over unwanted attention I do so from a position of ACTUAL practising what I preach.
I wish people were just more forgiving of each other (as Willow AND Buffy are with Xander, for obviously opposite reasons, but Xander sometimes fails to be with Buffy)
Oh, Dingoes Ate my Baby are ACTUALLY a real band.
Four Star Mary. They're still on my regular playlists decades on ^^
So, I’m not a fan of the show Supernatural really. But you know, the kid that broke the seal at the start. Was that not Sam? This aired 1997. Supernatural was 2005. After all these years. I’d never noticed. I don’t t know why I did now??
