After Jabber's first reaction to Sid, was anyone else as evil as me and was just waiting for the bit that Sid is outside Buffy's window, with absolute glee 😛😛😛some great lines from Xander in this episode him saying he was safe as the demon needed a healthy intelligent brain. and the "Red Rum" line never fails to make me laugh 🤣🤣
I have complete sympathy for anyone's triggers and it is reprehensible to make fun of them and when Sid looked in the window I laughed my heinie off at Jabby pulling the sheet up.
I always feel so bad about Sid knowingly accepting his fate and killing the demon. There’s something really noble in that. I love the subversion of our expectation of him being the bad guy
In fairness, he did think that they had eliminated all of the talent show people from their pool of suspects lol. I mean in Sunnydale, I wouldn't be taking any chances anyway, knowing their luck, there would be an unrelated demon/vampire/murderer ALSO involved in the talent show so it was still silly, but not QUITE as silly as it seems. He was just trying to get into the school spirit! 🤣
I sympathise with your dummy issue, I really do, and I feel terrible for saying this...but your reaction was hilarious. I swear I'm not evil. The moment you spotted Sid and had that "Oh hell no" reaction not knowing that the whole episode was going to be dummy-centric...priceless. Couple of other notes: as a big fan I love your Supernatural references - keep 'em coming, and nice 'kabooting' action!
all that tells you is that xander squared 29 at some point recently. it doesn't mean he has it memorized, or can give you the square root of any other square. willow is the only one who impresses in that scene.
I love all the jokes about acting the writers make the actors say. Buffy, Willow and Xander would rather have detention than be in the talent(less) show. 6:35 Willow: "A dramatic scene is the easiest way to get through the talent show, because it doesn't require an actual talent" (!!!). 28:20 Giles convenes the Power Circle, which is supposed to be a ritual to give performers confidence, then just says "Um... get ready". And of course the final curtain up scene, which ironically is the climax of the actual story. Talk about a 4th wall break! And the end credits with the Scoobies trying to save the show with a scene from _Oedipus Rex_ .
I think its great that a show this 'camp' can still horrify its viewers and be truly creepy. My dad and I both also have a thing with inanimate objects like dolls moving on their own, in the worst possible way. It was fun seeing you relate so much to my own feelings of dread when I realized what sort of episode this was on first viewing. It was probably one of the better episodes of the season, but I also can't help but get the shivers from Sid.
I can empathize with the fear of dolls, but Sid is a monster hunting hero, and so I hope there's no slander like on other channels. It's helpful to take yourself out of the equation when consuming media to understand more deeply ¨̮
Ah, yes, as soon as the camera lingered a fraction too long on the Ventriloquist, you knew it was going to be *that* episode, lol. 4:25 good call, The Macarena was only like 4 years old at this point - I'm sure everyone knows it 😂 6:13 Pinocchio with a little Chucky thrown in .... Yeah this will be great❗ 8:23 Ah yes the famous Whedon cut: "Clean, orderly, and quiet" > cut to a scene that is none of those things. 9:39 Bless Willow 😍😆 14:15 how did heart removed murder make the middle of the list ... *concern* 15:54 budget cuts, Parent Tragedy Notes were clearly getting too expensive 🤔 23:04 "creepazoid" .... How very Buffy of you. You're in the club now 😆 26:25 oh the twisted plots!
When my kids were in primary school I would amuse them by reading _Green_ _Eggs_ _and_ _Ham_ by Dr. Seuss - backwards. Sadly, they told their teacher about it and I ended up having to read it to the entire class. (edited to fix a stupid typo)
For me, this is where this show turned a corner. I had committed to finishing out the first season but wasn’t sure I was going to continue. But I really liked this episode and from here to the end I think it is very strong.
Omg, as a fellow Aussie i love your aussie humor to these reviews. I've loved Buffy for so very long. I can't wait to watch the rest of the Buffy review's you've posted.
Best thing about this episode is our introduction to Snyder, one of the great characters in the show (highly irritating, but highly entertaining) who has really got it in for the Scoobies straight off. Again S1 is hard going for newbies to the show, as many of the storylines are fairly weak, love the fact that you really enjoy these early episodes. You really seem to be loving this show as the Series progresses, and believe me from mid Season 2 onwards it improves leaps and bounds.
i used to do theatre as a kid and young teen...but i was kind of lucky because my music/ drama teacher was nice and was quite fond of me...i got a lot of the big roles which was kind of a blessing and curse. i was peter pan, oliver twist...romeo...thankfully no video footage exists of this time of my life. it's funny that your freaked out...because this episode was inspired by people who ARE freaked out by dummies and puppets...Joss Whedon was like "i got an idea...let's use people's fear of puppets for an episode". all i can tell you about Snyder without spoilers...he is principal for a reason.
All of the classic monsters have appeared in one form or another in Buffy episodes. Nosderatu (the Master), the wolfman, the Frankenstein's creature, the monster from the black lagoon, doctor Jeckyll and mister Hyde, the invisible man, the mummy, the body snatchers/puppet masters, night of the living dead, etc.
I'm with you. Ventriloquist dummies are the creepiest. Still can't believe how much this episode made me care about Sid considering. Talk about a show of talent and it also had so many hilarious moments.
So, would you say this was the best episode ever? 😁 Creeped me out too when I first saw it. But you can always take your glasses of to not see the creepy puppet.

I have complete sympathy for anyone's triggers and it is reprehensible to make fun of them and when Sid looked in the window I laughed my heinie off at Jabby pulling the sheet up.
For your sake I'm just so glad that there are only 14 more episodes about ventriloquists' dummies.
I'm sorry, I couldn't resist. 😜

29:53 And yet Xander knows that 841 is a square number.
Rewatching the series you realize that Xander is a lot smarter than he lets on.
He probably didn't know what a square root was until Willow told him

I'd come on stage totally hammered and fumble my way through some easy sustain and diminished chords in whatever key

Principal Snyder (or the actor) was in Star Trek Deep Space Nine. He was the Ferengi who ran the casino.
