    Angel is one of the best episodes of S1. His back story and flashbacks are one of the great things about the Buffyverse. We now know Angel is a vampire originally from Ireland, but of course a very different one as he has a soul, and is tortured by his past deeds. As I said before you are so enthusiastic about this show, and is it just gets better and better. The Seasons following have a much bigger budget, and incredible writers with better special affects and cinematography. Enjoy your journey.

    Angel: "You have no idea what its like to have done the the things I've done, and to care."
    This is one of the most powerful lines in the whole series.

    You might be thinking Darla was going to be around longer due to having seen some Angel when watching it with your dad. One cool thing about vampires that have been around for centuries and the way the Buffyverse works is that even once they are dead and dusted, the show can always bring them back for a flashback, and being the main character on his own show, showing Angel in flashbacks can also include characters from his past in those scenes. Since Darla claims to have made Angel, she's been part of his story a long time.

    Since you have seen parts of the Angel series, it shows some flashbacks with Angelus in that series. They bring back Darla's actress from S1 of Buffy, and she gets some more screen time in flashbacks because she "made" him (As stated in this episode). Maybe that's why you thought she was a bigger antagonist, because you may have seen her before in passing. Trying to keep it vague and as Spoiler Free as possible. ❤

    I will say that one thing that differentiates the power dynamic between Buffy and Angel compared with the power dynamic between Edward and Bella, although both involve huge, icky age gaps with teenage girls, is the fact that Buffy at least has superpowers. And a secret life that would put an ordinary boy in danger. That said, Xander, Willow, and Giles are all ordinary people and they know what's going on and involve themselves in the danger on a regular basis, so that's not exactly a valid reason why she can't date a regular human boy either. I feel like if she was an adult and not 16 years old, there would still be somewhat of a power imbalance but at least it would be less problematic? Like Sookie in True Blood. Of course, I've never really understood what people find attractive about Angel anyway. But maybe that's just me? Anyway, that got a lot more rambly than I anticipated. I'm just going to stop now.

    Darla probably would've been a bigger deal if they'd had a longer first season. They only had a half-season in S1 because they were a midseason replacement for something else that got cancelled, and they had no idea when they filmed S1 if they were going to be picked up or if 13 episodes was all they were ever gonna get (can you imagine??)
    Later on in the series when they have time for exploring people's backstories and showing flashbacks and stuff they make more of a thing of certain characters' origins. No spoilers but there's a lot more to come!

    After much thought i figured why thr Angel/Buffy romance worked for me even with the age difference. First, the power difference that usually goes with large age differences really isn't there. It's not like he spent his centuries climbing the corporate power structure. Physically, he's a vampie and she's a slayer. If anything the power dynamic there leans on her side. But the big thing is he didn't pursue her romantically. He was helping her with tje other vampires. The romantic feelings between them grew organically. Certainly helped that they're both pretty easy on the eyes. ;)
    Anyeay, that's my thoughts on the matter.

    SPOILERS FOR THE WHOLE SHOW
    Xander judges Buffy pretty quickly considering even if the fake Ms. French had never been a preying mantis she was still a teacher over age and was called out by both Buffy and Willow with the line, "The younger man is too dumb to wonder why an older woman can't find someone her own age, and too desperate to care about the surgical improvements." Although Buffy saying that line as of finding out Angel's vampire age, and already knowing he's not of high school age (she apparently cannot find anyone her own age either), human-wise, is just as hypocritical. The last line of the next episode is true even this early in the series. Guess that's why it's blatantly stated as a joke but still a spoiler to throw people off track from being a spoiler.

    The modern obsession with "age gaps" in VAMPIRE MEDIA annoys the fuck out of me.
    These things are somewhat allegorical.
    The age gap is MEANT to be uncomfortable, but only in an "adult to teenager" way. Not a "240years is too big a gap" way.
    It is NEVER portrayed as a healthy relationship. Only a passionate one. Rea love, but sometimes love is not enough. There are other barriers. A VERY important lesson to TEACH TO A TEENAGE AUDIENCE.
    I knew an AWFUL lot of teen girls when I first watched the show... as a teenager. And I can say they were every bit as thirsty as any teenage boy and FAR more likely to do something about it. And be successful. Boys that age don't have the skills (or the attractive qualities like confidence, independence, wealth and physical prowess) that attract women. Women already have everything they need, bc (like it or not) women don't need game.
    Having a show feature REALISTIC teenage passion without condemnation but WITH consequences is very powerful and should not be dismissed as harmful or "weird" or wrong. Because teenagers feel these things. Sure, not for a 250+ year old vampire... but certainly got older people. I had SO MANY crushes on teachers that I STILL have erotic dreams about 20 years later, pretending otherwise is just... silly. And imo, actually harmful.
    It's only been in the last few years too. Which is INCREDIBLY weird to me, bc we've seen a stark rise in sexualised youth at the EXACT same time. People are desperate to protect them from a fantasy while wilfully ignoring rampant risk taking.
    In short: It's not wrong to ship "Bangel." It's not weird or condoning abusive relationships, and it IS romantic. Because a TV show is not reality, and people can distinguish between fantasy and reality.
    The issue comes when people attempt to hold real life up to the standards they've built in their fantasies. And that aint an issue with media. That's an issue with people needing to pull the sticks out of the arses.
    Certainly one of the stronger episode of season 1 ^^
    You seem to be enjoying the show enough that you are gonna be a bundle of joy when the quality improves. And it does.
    And you're still allowed to call out Xander for being toxic ;) Parts of the community ARE incredibly harsh on him, which is why some get defensive. But it's never about avoiding criticising his flaws. It's always about just being consistent, and you'll almost CERTAINLY be able to spot where the double standards have been held when you you get to them :P

    • @fusslig7811
      @fusslig7811 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I mean… most people understand Buffy and aren’t condemning her for feeling that way about Angel. The problem people have is that Angel is an adult and that him being attracted to and pursuing a relationship with a 16 year old is wrong and feels predatory
      I'm not disagreeing with you by the way

    • @chrisallen19821982
      @chrisallen19821982 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great post I love you're breakdown of the "age gap" obsession I was 15 yo (boy) when the show first aired so have always found myself identifying with Xander and as I have gotten older Giles lol, I have found a lot of Buffy fans (both male but mostly female) seem to hold Xander to a much higher moral standard than other main characters of the show who objectively do way worse things, that they are forgiven for. Xander can be annoying but no more than Buffy or Willow it just gets pointed out way more when it him imo.

    • @DmGray
      @DmGray ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fusslig7811
      Indeed, and the show explores that too.
      But as with many things in life, just bc something is inadvisable or even wrong... doesn't mean it isn't done.
      But it DOES end up treating Buffy like an imbecile incapable of making choices. Which is funny, bc in OTHER circumstances the same people instantly believe Buffy makes better decisions than the adults and should be supported without consideration ^^
      A girl I went to school with had a 30~ year old fiancé when she was 15. She was a bright girl, fairly conservative, went to uni after school and I'm fairly sure they settled together when she was older.
      Was it weird? Yup. But I simply refuse to judge circumstances without full knowledge. I can tell you now there's literally zero percent chance she was being abused or coerced.
      I've never really understood why some people think a particular birthday is some how magic.
      When the clock strikes on your 18th (or whatever) it doesn't transform you into an adult capable of making decisions you weren't already making.
      It's an arbitrary age chosen to protect vulnerable people (teenagers who have yet to mature) while avoiding restrictions on those mature enough to make independent decisions.
      I've known people at 15 who could be trusted, and I know people at 40 who still shouldn't :P
      Age of consent is simply a limit placed to discourage unacceptable or potentially abusive behaviour. A flawed but absolutely necessary protection.
      As viewers of a TV show, we can literally see the sum of their interactions. I think it's seriously hard to argue, with such complete information, that Buffy lacks capacity or agency... or power. Simply that Angel made poor decisions based on his own extended loneliness and isolation. An unhealthy co-dependency, but not really similar to a teenager being groomed.
      I just find people are INCREDIBLY dishonest when it comes to this particular area.
      I was always fiercely protective of younger people. I got into fights over it, bc I recognised the vulnerability of teens even when I was a teen. I lost friends over it. I was called all manner of names. Juist for thinking 18-20yo's shouldn't be banging 15yo's.
      But I've known people who manipulate and target people that know they CAN manipulate... who say all of the "right" and comfortable things in public.
      I just prefer a more complex, nuanced and mature debate on it :P
