G'diddilyday, lovelies! I had a lot of weird issues with this video, so I apologize if it looks different than usual. I've also been caught up with some family-related things this past week so I am a little further behind than usual. Next season will likely start on TH-cam in hopefully a fortnight! Thank you all and I am so glad you've enjoyed my reactions thus far! I've absolutely adored the show so far and can't wait to get into these next seasons with you!
You figured out something that I don't remember other reactors working out. Buffy IS resigned during the first confrontation and can't break free on his thrall because she expects to lose. The reason she says she feels stronger and resists the thrall the second time is because she already died, realizes the prophecy is fulfilled, and knows she can win now. Most people think she gained new powers after dying and spend a lot of time the rest of the episode trying to figure out what they are!
Over 25 years since I first saw this episode and SMGs line "I'm 16 years old, I don't wanna die" still gets me
In most vampire lore, Vampires have some mind control powers. In Buffy you don't see that with regular vampires. But the Master clearly had some of that power.
Honestly, I loved the way Buffy rejected Xander. She was honest, but she wasn't insulting.
She even took his lashing out well. She understood & didn’t snap back. Very high emotional maturity there.
@@goldenageofdinosaurs7192 Yep. I'm sure there were times she felt the same way, where she found out that a guy she was into wasn't into her. In fact, wasn't that part of the backstory of the first episode to feature the character who would later be known as Anne? Or did he move away? Oh well, I guess it's time to rewatch the entire series.
I actually think both Buffy and Xander were pretty mature in how they handled it. Xander is a 16 year old boy that got rejected by his crush, he immediately kind of lashed out out of emotion but then pulled back almost immediately and accepted it.
Great job realising she felt strong because she got her confidence back after dying. Almost every reactor thought she got new power or something from the Master
Overcame her fear of death and took a level up in badass! 💪🏽
Buffy was paralyzed when the Master bit her, her resignation to dying allowed him to overpower her quite easily, but she wasn't able to move after his thrall was upon her.
Also, another aspect of her strength after dying that I haven't seen in the comments is that her death was also part of her accepting the slayer in her.
In other episodes, you can see Buffy avoiding using the power the slayer gives her. One example is the Pilot when Giles tries to get her to use her slayer sense. She wanted to stay being Buffy, so she avoided using slayer abilities unless she was forced to.
In a way, her death was also a death of the Buffy she was striving to keep on being. Upon coming back to life, she fully accepted the slayer within her and all the power jt gives, so in a real sense she actually gained in power.
Also, quick little bit about your comment about Angel breaking her ribs. The slayer is, like vampires, not really fully human anymore. So, she's no longer frail like humans. He would have had to seriously put a lot of effort into actually breaking one of her bones. A fee extra-human abilities that have been displayed this season are super strength, quick healing, extra senses, and oreminitionary dreams. Keep an eye out too. This show is natorious for not explaining everything going on in dialogue. So keep an eye for extra abilities and stuff going on in the background. I know the show looks light and funny, even campy, with a few bouts of seriousness. Really, the writers have put a lot of effort into building universe and slayer lore and also character development. A lot of which controls the actions of the characters, but much of which never really gets explained or discussed.
For example, one this is bow serious they make the stakes for the slayer. We can't blame Buffy for how she feels when she quits and goes home. Yet, the buffyverse isn't as forgiving. In the beginning of the episode, she points out how she knows the vampires are driving their attacks closer and closer to the school. What's more, Buffy was at the school specifically because she felt their next attack was likely to target the school. Then she finds out about the prophecy and leaves. The buffyverse doesn't hold back from exacting a price from her for failing to keep her responsibity as the slayer and so a bunch of students died right in the school.
This price was also exacted in the pilot episode too when she failed to properly act as the slayer. Yes, the show is funny, but when it comes to the slayer, it's deadly serious and any sort of screw up as the slayer means people die. So, it has levels to keep an eye out for.
Anyways, have fun watching. Season 2 really does pick up. Better budget and the writers had more time to write. The first half will feel a bit like this season and then the show shifts in the second half. You'll know it when you see it. One of the cool things about this show is it doesn't stay the same. It constantly grows and chamges along with the characters.
I wonder if any reaction viewer has ever gone into this episode not knowing there were more seasons and been worried about Buffy's death? I can't recall, but I don't think so.
Good question. Obviously, there are six more seasons, but SMG's speech about her mortality resonates with the female reactors.

They all know and that's a shame , when the show was airing people don't know how many seasons the show will have so they believe more the moment events happened
The Anointed is a vampire. In fact, if you go back to the scene where Willow and Cordy find the bodies in the A.V./Rec room and look at the bloody hand print on the T.V. (which was there right from when they first peeked through the window, btw), it's a little on the small side and positioned quite low, almost as if a young child is reaching up to his favourite cartoons...
That’s a new level of creep factor for this episode.
I know it's splitting hairs, but Buffy *died*. She didn't "fake out death" from a canon perspective.
In Princess Bride terms, she was "mostly dead", but could be revived with a "miracle".

The dress that everyone loves in this episode is actually designed to look like SMG's 1995 Daytime Emmy dress, where she won her award.
Prophecy Girl definitely the best episode of S1. Many who are new to the show complain about the special effects, but have to bear in mind this is 26yo show, and S1 did not have a massive budget, plus the writers were conscious of the fact they never knew if it would be recommissioned. Here you can really see the direction of the show changing, giving all the characters so far much more purpose. This incredible show just gets better and better, you will love S2. Some comic relief also, this show has the best one liners ever. The Master ' what do ya think, 5.1' and 'By the way I like your dress'. SMG'S acting is superb here. When she says 'I'm 16 years old I don't want to die' you really feel her anguish. Great enthusiastic reactions to S1, from mid season 2 onwards this show goes like a rollercoaster and never stops with some amazing episodes. S3 is just out of this world, S5 is just off the charts!
Indeed, and season 4 has some of the greatest episodes, season 6 is maybe the season people can love with time but it is a ride rollercoaster and awesome season, season 7 has great moments and ends the show well
You're right about the ribcage thing, even a normal strength person can break someone's ribs doing CPR, someone with super strength would definitely break a rib.
Buffy's said "I've both been there and done that" in the the first episode. Also in that same episode they panned down from the library directly to the Master's lair. They don't dwell on it, so it seems like it might just a way to make the visual transition more interesting, but turns out they were showing us the Hellmouth is under the library right from the beginning.
Angel also tells Buffy to head east, towards the school in the first episode when she is trying to find the Masters lair to rescue Jesse.
You've quickly become my favorite new Buffy reactor and I can't wait to see the rest! Hope your personal life settles down and you can keep up the great content!
Remember a couple of episodes back, in Nightmares, Buffy dreamed that she was fighting the Master and she was powerless against him? Buffy's dreams are prophetic. Her dream came true. A lot of people think that dream was just a part of the nightmares that were affecting everyone, but that one was a Slayer prophecy dreams.
Well done on the Bingo! Considering you made it so late in the season, I think you did pretty well. Its fun watching you be legitimately enthusiastic about the show and its characters, whether its being camp, goofy, or serious.
I like when Xander decided to work with Angel to save Buffy it was a good showing of character growth from him.
Also I don't like prophecies; either they're true and you will spend all the time trying to counteract the things you don't like but will inevitable come to pass or it's just guess work, in which case you should just do what you planned. Either way I would just rather leave the future a mystery; team free will.
That kid (The Anointed One) was one of the people who died on the bus in that accident earlier in the season. In the episode, "Never Kill A Boy on the First Date"
Considering your love for Giles AND your love for the Master's type of campy, I strongly suggest you watch Repo! The Genetic Opera - Anthony Stewart Head starring in a weird campy Rock Opera.

Fun Fact: Cerberus means "Spot" Cerberus was a dog with a mottled coat.
I don't know about earthquakes, but we usually take one or two days off for hurricanes in Florida. I would imagine that actual schools in earthquake zones probably do take a day to assess for damage, but Sunnydale doesn't even close the school when people are killed on campus, so it probably treats earthquakes the same way.
Grinding the bones to dust approach makes sense
"Just shoot him!", made me laugh 🤣. And whether a school would close would likely depend on the size of the quake. Given the damage in the library, most schools would probably at least cordon off the library but this is Sunnydale. Props to SMG for the "I'm sixteen years old" speech.
Great reaction, and I agree they definitely should have ground the bones to dust. Lastly, BINGO reached! You could go for a blackout. Very much looking forward to your reactions to season two where some terrific episodes lie.

Buffy was good at one liners and sass.
She "knew" the prophesy and it... gave her a sense of fatality about her fate... so she "let" it come true. They learned that the prophesies can be true, and not what they expect at the same time.
Buffy rose from the dead... and the Master... died the undeath (ok true death) he deserved.
I like seeing these through fresh eyes.

As someone who's lived in Cali their whole life, things generally just keep on keeping on. A couple years ago I was at work when a quake hit, and granted it wasn't a huge shake, but we just kept it trucking.

Buffy did drown, she was briefly dead. I think the reason she was able to be revived was because Giles did inadvertently find a way to subvert the prophecy. Regarding the Anointed, the prophecy said "the Slayer will not know him and he will lead her into hell.", with the implication that she would follow him unknowingly to the Master. But Giles told Buffy to look for a child. When she sees him, she says "I know who you are" and basically asks him to take her where she needs to go.
During the Xander/Willow scene @18:03, I gently direct your attention to the sign on the wall behind Willow. ;)

I spent the first few minutes of this video trying to work out what kind of lizard that is in the tank, but I couldn't see it clearly enough. A water dragon, maybe?

earthquakes- So I was at Livermore High in Livermore California, which is in the San Francisco Bay Area, East of Oakland. In January of 1980 there was an earthquake where the epicenter was about 17 km away and it was a 5.8. Our High School was built in 1891 and we were evacuated when the earthquake hit, but after about 15 minutes we all went back to our classes-
No BINGO, since she was really dead, so it wasn't a fake out 🙋🏻♂️.
If she had died & stayed dead: no fake out. She died & didn't stay dead, ergo: fake out. It may not be possible to fool a reactor at this point (or anyone new to the show), however it's about the intent of the creator/writers. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

The whole cast acted the hell out of this episode - the whole Buffy-Xander-Willow Sitch was handled better than anything else at the time probably would have ... But fuck did SMG deserve an award for the "Giles, I'm sixteen, I don't want to die" scene
We absolutely need more melodramatic villains, he's the best 😆
And an honourable mention to Xander for making a Star Trek Next Gen joke to remind me how truly old I am!

The Master does kind of remind me of former Florida Governor and current Florida Senator, Rick Scott, who is often compared to Voldemort in both appearance and personality. So the politician comparison is pretty accurate.
Great reaction as always, such a good final episode of the season.
Fun fact: there are several.goofs in the hd remaster because of the different aspect ratios and the lazy technique used in the remaster. The original dvd are what originally aired on tv and have a much better visual quality and no boom mics but tjey are in 4:3 square format. The passion of the nerd has a wonderful video about it and if you havnt watched his episode guides after watching the episodes i highly recommend.
I don't think Buffy was destined to cheat death. It all came down to the actions of Xander, of all people, who the prophecy didn't take into account.
This is the episode in which this show stopped being just campy fun and revealed what it could be. Looking forward to your thoughts on season 1 and your reactions to season 2.

If you havnt watched the movie yet i highly recomend 😊 fun fact: the dress is a throw back to the movie as well as the super overdone valley girl speak in episode 1 with the girls (Aphrodisia is just the best name 🤣) in the locker room.
There are two points where explosives are used perfectly in the show. I won't tell you where they are, but trust me; they're both amazing!

The use of "like" as a verbal tick is something I notice and it TRULY bothers me.
We all use it occasionally (or other verbal ticks) but SOME people use it basically every other word. One reactor I used to enjoy I now struggle to watch at all JUST because she says "like" FAR too much.
Don't sweat it though. It has to be an AGGRESSIVE pattern before it bothers me that much :P
And if you see a lot of "goofs" you may not be watching the correct version of the show. They released a remastered version with the wrong aspect ratio and it often includes set & production staff in shots bc Whedon shot the shot on 16:9 and cropped it down to 4:3 to achieve the frames he wanted.
The lighting and special effects can look a LOT worse in the remaster too (not colour corrected, so night time scenes are still well lit and look like the day)

The bones being left intact is addressed PRECISELY bc many fans felt as you do. Whedon wanted to firmly draw a line under the Master as a villain.

I don't get your bingo card, you only have 2 marked off, but Xander already made an inappropriate move on Buffy when he was possessed by the hyenas, In the second episode Xander kills vampire Jesse, Buffy's mother was already put in danger because she didn't know shit in the Angel episode, Giles went to the mausoleum by himself when he shouldn't of in never kill a boy on the first date, the dangers of online interactions and catfishing were covered in I robot you Jane episode which for the time was an on the nose PSA, and multiple students and faculty have died at this point that should have caused the school to be closed for the day.
I didn't make the card until after episode 8, so that's why things aren't crossed off. It felt unfair to mark ones that had already happened 😞

I have currently watched your first episode review and caught the finale, so I have to go back and catch up on all the others. You should suggest to your audience to guess by what episode they think you will end up with a bingo. If anything it might help interactions in the comments which is always a good thing when it comes to videos.
You weren't being that clever with "it's not the end of the world". This is the metaphor of the episode. It's not the end of the world to face the Master, or to get rejected, or to go alone to the dance.
