A few quick frames comparing the codecs in a backlit situation. In the final comparison I boosted the exposure, lifted the shadows considerably and then brought the highlights back down.

LUMIX S5IIX Codec & Blackmagic Raw Comparison | Interiors
มุมมอง 6K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
Comparing the best internal codec (400Mbps) vs the best ProRes that can be written to SSD (1.6Gbps) vs shooting Blackmagic RAW (BRAW) via a Blackmagic Video Assist 12G. Will have to do another one comparing an exterior scene and something with some more movement happening in frame.

Montage of clips from a recent trip to Spain. It was very hot. Tech Specs: Everything shot on the S5IIX with the LUMIX 35MM and 50MM f1.8 lenses. All the exterior shots were shot in 5.9k ProRes at 1.9 Gbps to a Samsung T5 drive. As always I used a Tiffen 1/8 BPM and Freewell VND. The interiors were shot in BRAW using the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G. Really impressed with the ProPres quality, at...

Vintage Summer Vibes with the LUMIX S5
มุมมอง 3.2Kปีที่แล้ว
My continued longing for warm weather led me to pull together this montage of clips from last summer. All shot on the LUMIX S5 with the 20-60MM kit lens, with a Tiffen BPM 1/8 and Freewell VND. About half the clips are with the internal codec and half in 5.9K BRAW with the Blackmagic Video Assist. Went for more of a vintage film emulation vibe in the grade, using the FilmUnlimited powergrades f...
Still and Film Emulation in Hawaii with the LUMIX S5 and BRAW
มุมมอง 33Kปีที่แล้ว
Took my LUMIX S5 and Blackmagic Video Assist on a trip to Hawaii. Though I love my Pocket 4K, I'm finding this to be a great combination for when I want great video quality as well as the ability to shoot stills in a compact package. Video footage was graded using FilmUnlimited powergrades by Juan Melara. I'm loving it so far as it's pretty flexible and doesn't give an overly vintage look. Most...

Shot in BRAW on LUMIX S5 with Blackmagic Video Assist 12G. Been testing out this combination lately and liking the results. It's a bit inconvenient to carry an external monitor around but I really like the image and workflow compared to using the internal codec.

Thanks! The light was so perfect it was magical. Will be going back there next month so will make a follow-up.
good reference
Thanks, hope it was helpful
Love this, Brandon! Amazing storytelling, really nice work 🙌
Thanks so much! Really appreciate that🙌
Did you have a rig? Or was it more run and gun?
Bit of both but a pretty minimal rig. I always have a cage on the camera and then I’ll mount the monitor on top but that’s about it for this kind of situation. If shooting something more planned I’ll rig it out more with rails and a second battery and such.
how did you film underwater??
I used a GoPro Hero 12 for those and most of the driving shots.
love this and the sound design is so good! im curious, does the s5ii feel too heavy when traveling?
Thanks! I’ve found it to be good for travel, the weight has never been an issue and it’s small enough to pack in a small bag. I use a cage in it sometimes and that adds extra weight and size but it’s still my preferred travel cam.
As delightful as always. And good test of your camera's dynamic range there early on.
Thanks appreciate it 🙌🏼

Hope it was helpful. Planning to do another one soon.
@@brandonrude Look forward. Is the powergrade worth it? Honest take pls!
@@giddishanelli9021 for me it definitely has been worth it. I quickly and easily get the look I want and have the ability to adjust as I want. It’s not cheap, but I’ve used it on every single project I’ve done for nearly two years so for me it was worth the money. I think the FilmVision powergrade by Serr is another good option and quite a bit cheaper.
@@brandonrude Thanks for that. Price is not a big concern. Pls suggest me couple of more choices of powergrades by different colorists. I will definitely consider to put them in buy list going forward.
@@giddishanelli9021 the only other one I know is Cullen Kelly. Check his TH-cam channel, he has some good stuff too.
please the title of the music 😍
It's "Wish I'd Never Met You" by Chuck Reed. I found it on MUSICBED.
You always make fantastic films by using basic mirrorless set. (not even Arri,Red and their Cine lenses) Absolutely gifted.
Thanks! Really appreciate you saying that.
Awesome stuff man! 😎
Thanks! 🙌🏼
Thankd for the video! A less discussed drawback of using external braw is that you loose all in camera lens corrections. Distortion seems pretty visible from your braw footage. Thats why Im not sure about investing in lumix lens..how is your experience in this regard?
It’s definitely noticeable but not in a way that bothers me. It also decreases as you stop down below f4, which is probably more relevant for photos than video for most people.
@@brandonrude thank you very Much!!
My Rome 😍
I absolutely loved it and can’t wait to go back.
@@brandonrude you're always welcome!
Love your film. What lenses used?
Thanks! Almost everything was shot on the LUMIX S 35mm f1.8
camera is crap, but you made it so much better with the color grading.
Thanks, it took some work to try to make it look NOT like a GoPro. Overall I think it’s fine and served a purpose but I won’t use it all that often.
@@brandonrude Yea, it's not easy, I tried it too. the dynamic range is really horrible and gives it away, not mentioning the shakes. You can turn on the stabilizer though.
Could you do a tutorial on how to get such amazinng colors? This looks amazing! 😍
I can probably do that. I created one a while back but it's probably due for an update.
@@brandonrude it would be awesome! Thank you 😊
Amazing shots and grade man! Earned a sub!
Thanks for the sub!
Great story told through the lens. Epic looking grade 😎👍
Appreciate that! Looking back now I should have closed with like a shot of me looking content on the beach as a mirror image of the opening shots. Lessons for the next one.
SO EPIC!! what codec do you use?
Thanks! This was almost all done in the 6K ProRes 422 HQ to a Samsung T5 drive. A few shots were probably on the internal 4K All-I codec but I was recording to the SSD almost exclusively.
Love the progression of clips and grading. How do you get such rich colors?
Thanks! I tend to overexpose slightly, maybe a half stop, and then the powergrades I’m using do most of the heavy lifting. I think a big part is increasing the color density without too much extra saturation. The new Resolve 19 has a built in functionality for increasing color density that I’m eager to try.
the ART of story telling! 😃
I thought about some narration but then I figured it would be a good challenge to try and tell it just visually
Just tried subscribing and realised I was already subscribed 😄 When I see your work, it screams ART - composition, shot selection, pacing, colours are all perfection. Genuinely inspirational work and it's great to see that in a content rich world filled with gimmicks, there is still room for true art to shine. I have been on a bit of a colour expedition of late so I hope you don't mind me asking this having just binged on some of your older videos. Do you still use the JM film emulation as a base or have you moved on?
Thank you so much, that means a lot. And yes, I still use the JM FilmUnlimited as my standard. Generally now I apply it at the timeline and then make some adjustments to each clip if needed for whit balancing and power windows and stuff like that.
@@brandonrude that's such an efficient way of working and the results are truly spectacular!! I'll give that a go - thanks for responding
Always a joy to watch your work, Brandon! Your filmmaking style is so warm and inviting. How’s the S5iix treating you? I have a BMPCC 6K Pro myself and while the image quality is second to none, it’s incredibly difficult to film myself and only really feel like breaking it out in a fixed/controlled environment. Really looking into investing in another camera in order to film myself more and go out and about and have something more portable/handheld friendly.
Thanks! I’m still loving the S5iix, it’s my go-to really. I also have the 6K pro and use it in scenarios where I have more time and setup, but for day to day stuff and travel (or filming myself) I usually grab the S5 for the convenience of it. Plus it takes up a lot less space in my backpack when traveling.
This was awesome! loved the editing and color grading hope you enjoyed your stay here, new sub!
Thanks! And yes, we loved it and went back again. Have part 2 in the works, just need to finish the edit.
Is 6k h265 an option on the s5iix?
Pretty sure it is, there’s a ton of codec and resolution options
Incredible video, the footage looks spectacular. It’s criminal you don’t have more subscribers. Keep up the great work. 🤘
Thanks! Really appreciate that. I think I don’t post enough to have more subs but tbh I’m really only doing YT just because I truly enjoy making videos.
This is probably the best footage I've seen from the S5! is this the original or mark 2? Really lovely stuff!
Thanks! This was all shot on the original. Incidentally it was on that trip that the mark 2 was announced and I preordered it on the spot.
This was excellently made! So Inspiring. I aim to make one of these vlog type cinematic videos. I own a Lumix G9 and I feel like I haven’t tested it to its full capacity
Thanks, stay tuned for the sequel to this, should be up by this weekend! I’ve heard the G9 is great and one can get a lot out of it
Hey Brandon, I also purchased the FilmUnlimited and I'm quite new to color grading. I'm trying to figure out what's the best workflow. Is the RCM version more flexible to you or why did you choose it? And how did you get the In-Camera LUT on your LUMIX S5 ? Is it just possible with an external monitor ?
I think the RCM version is more relevant in scenarios where you might have clips from different cameras, each with different log profiles that need to be converted. If you’re shooting with a single camera then it’s less of a concern. To use the LUTS in the S5 you need to export the LUT as a vLUT (for Panasonic cameras) to a memory card, then load that into the camera. For use on an external monitor, a regular LUT file should work, which is what I do for my BM video assist. Search on TH-cam, I found several good videos for how to do it and they helped a lot.
I think braw is bypassing some of the artificial sharpness happening in the internal processor of the camera. Really beneficial for making narrative work. Thanks for sharing.
Agreed
Hi Brandon. Is the BRAW really worth it with S5II? I mean there's prores 422 external and all-intra. Ease of use probably is a good point, but is the color similar to bmpcc4k out of the box or it does need some color transform nodes to match the two? I've been meaning to pull the trigger on the lumix for quite a while now, but h2s is in the rear view mirror - but it looks noisier.
Eh, I used to think so but I just got back from a trip and I only used the external ProRes the whole time (for the sake of convenience and a smaller kit) and I’m quite content with the footage I brought home. It’s nice to have and IMO will give you a slightly nicer image due to the color depth, but it’s not a night and day difference from the ProRes. It is from the old internal codec on the original S5, but this ProRes is all you need I think
@@brandonrude Thanks for the reply. I thought You might come with that conclusion. Especially after I got to play with FilmUnlimited that just pulled off some cosmic magic with footage from my old and rusty GH5. It's noisy but it looks georgous, so I assumed that s5IIX with prores should kill it every time.
This video inspired me to change how I live my life. I watched it and then bought the ticket to Thailand. Can't thank you enough.
Wow, that is quite possibly the highest praise I could imagine! Very happy to hear it inspired you. I find that as I’ve gotten older I want to spend more and more time appreciating life and all there is to see and do. Take advantage of it if and while you can! Have a great trip, look forward to seeing what you film!
@@brandonrude Thanks for the kind words. How did you know there is a film in the works? Very sneaky of you. I've shot a ton of footage I can't just put together, pefectionism and insecurities kicking in but hopefully something will come out of it eventually. I'll let you know in the comments when it's out :)
@@cinematic_monkey please do! Perfectionism can be tough to deals with. I think of that Vonnegut quote where he said he’s amazed by anyone who can simply finish a work of art. You got this!
The beginning looks like a movie all it’s missing is the beginning credits
Thanks! Thats exactly what I was hoping for!
I love this it makes me inspired to get out and film
That means a lot, really appreciate it!
00:15 that shot was the 16mm or the 25mm?
Pretty certain that was the 16mm.
Amazing!
Thanks! It was a fun afternoon project with some friends. Someday I’ll have to actually make it into a film.
Damn 4:16 sounds like my laughing.. I was kinda shocked xDDD Beautiful video! And laugher! haha

Thanks!
What's leanz do you have?
I have the LUMIX S 35MM and 50MM f1.8
Hey Brandon, love your work, I've watched a lot of your work multiple times. Quick question, do you ever use these on your Lumix S5 to monitor the 'look' in camera? (LUT View Assist Monitor), and would these work as real-time LUTs for photo on the S5iiX? I understand they're power-grades and best not used for monitoring in camera, but just wondering if you'd tried this at all?
Thanks Lewis! And yes, I absolutely do. The powergrades come with a series of LUTs intended for in-camera viewing and I use those in the S5 and I have them loaded in the Video Assist as well. It’s great for monitoring the look when shooting.
I just discovered your channel and I am already subscribed. You truly transmit something special in your videos (your short-movies should I say?), the photography, the rhythm, the story-telling, the music and sound/voice-over. It's really inspiring. Please keep doing this stuff if you can (and want to, of course). Thanks!
Thank you, I truly appreciate that. Will definitely keep making them, have a couple I’ve been chipping away at so stay tuned!
Really amazing look you got at 1:15! Was that BRAW with the BMP 1/8?
That’s my favorite shot! And yes, BRAW and 1/8 BPM. The light was so beautiful and the mist coming off the lake just enhanced it even more
Haha, you got me.
I was wondering if anyone watched until the end! Appreciate it!
this was great 😊
Thanks! Getting cold again, may have to dig through my footage from last summer and make a vol. 3

Oh, by the way : Is it possible to turn off the lens correction while using internal codecs? Cheers!
I’m not sure actually. I don’t think so offhand but tbh I haven’t tried lol
@@brandonrude Ahh, too bad. But thanks for the answer!!
braw is on the left or right?
On the right
Thank you! Massive difference. My VA will be here today! Thanks again for posting it (I had commented on the other vid requesting backlit). Thank you again. As an aside, if you’d like to make the internal look better: Blur radius .52 Mid details -20 Halation (just a touch) Film grain (just a touch)
Fantastic! Look forward to seeing what you produce with it. As a heads up you’ll likely need to update the firmware on the VA. Blackmagic makes it pretty easy thankfully, you download the updater from their support page. And thanks for the tip for shooting internal, I’ll give that a try.
Great job lol, my favourite Nicolas Cage movie is the City of Angels. Happy New year bro
That’s a good one! Happy new year!
