  • Comparing the best internal codec (400Mbps) vs the best ProRes that can be written to SSD (1.6Gbps) vs shooting Blackmagic RAW (BRAW) via a Blackmagic Video Assist 12G. Will have to do another one comparing an exterior scene and something with some more movement happening in frame.

      I think so too. Still, I'm pretty happy with how the ProRes looks after some contrast corrections.

    Thanks for comparison, Ive got the s5iix with nvme 2tb drive . I really want to avoid an added monitor just to get braw but it does look smoother and more natural. I wish we could just shoot braw internally. I guess Ill stick to opengate and prores for now and sit on the fence though. cheers

      Yeah lugging around the external monitor can be a pain, especially for travel. I hate viewing on the small screen but carrying around that extra weight and rigging gets annoying quickly

      Most cinematographers are use to rigging their cameras and using a monitor or viewfinder. If you truly need RAW video, a monitor usually comes with the territory anyway

    I would say Braw looks the best even at 12:1. The ProRes looks like it has a gamma shift making it more contrasty and also the files sizes are HUGE. Why didnt you test the LONG GOP? I guess it would look identical to the ALL-I? From what I see that Braw is worth it if you can do it but otherwise the ALL-I / Long Gop are great for convenience.

    • @brandonrude

      Agreed. In this case I didn’t expect the L-GOP to look any different and also the all-I was new in the mark II so focused on that

    Thank you so much for this comparison. I’ve been struggling with getting good skin tones in V-log 10-bit 422 with my S5IIX, they usually come out a little too splotchy in my experience. In BRAW, those skin tones look great. I’ve got the Blackmagic Video Assist, I just tend to take baby steps towards trying new things. This is push I needed to start recording in BRAW

      Glad it was helpful! And yeah the 12-bit color is so nice. I used to shoot only with a Blackmagic P4K, so coming to a mirrorless camera brought tons of convenience, but the downside is the 10-bit color.

    🤯 - Why is that guy walking around just holding that monitor attached to the camera? “Because we’re shooting B-Raw.” So you have someone whose only job is holding that monitor instead of shooting internal codecs? Is B-Raw worth it? “Without question.” (Thank you so much for sharing this comparison. I had no idea there was such a big difference. The B-Raw has so much more depth and texture. At first I thought you were shooting with two different cameras since the difference is so significant. In defense of the internal codecs it may not be realistic for anyone to expect them to compete with the recording power of a dedicated external recorder. But there is a convenience factor foregone, and significant benefits to be gained by pivoting to the BMD video assist. B-Raw shows just how amazing the Panasonic sensor is if someone wants to go the extra mile to achieve maximum image quality. The difference is 🤯 for me. Wow! The shadows and clean image for BRAW is noticeably superior here...ProRes here very un flattering on the skin. Depending on what you are shooting, but these results show how BRAW shines on human subjects for a softer gradient in shadow detail, highlight rolloff, etc.

      The difference is noticeable when color grading specially. There is no blocking, the noise is more organic, recovering highlights or correcting WB in a non destructive way... I have a Pocket 4K as my main camera, and the S5IIX mainly for things that requiere a small camera (social events, dance videos where I don't want to carry a heavy setup, just a light gimbal and the camera, and rely on AF), but I've got a Blackmagic Video Assist for the S5IIX to match exactly the color depth and flexibility of my Pocket 4K whenever is necessary: multicam, heavy color grading, different angles on music videos or fashion films... It opens up a lot of possibilities for me.

    Love your videos Brandon. I'm looking to buy a camera to shoot videos on and am strongly considering the S5 iiX with a BlackMagic Assist. I was considering the new full frame Blackmagic cinema cam, but I think the Lumix shooting in BRAW seems like a good option due to it's AF and IS systems. Are there any considerations I need to make when purchasing the video assist, or will it function the same as it would without but film in BRAW? I'm thinking in terms of problems with any lenses used (like anamorphic) or any cropping or anything? Thanks so much, and please keep the great videos coming.

    • @brandonrude
      @brandonrude  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks man. I really want the new BMCC but I can’t really justify the purchase. Depending on the kind of stuff you plan on shooting, the AF and IS are really nice to have. In terms of different lenses, one advantage the VA gives is more anamorphic desqueeze options. The BM cameras can only display 1.33x and 2x, but the VA can also do 1.5x and 1.8x. One thing to consider is if you always want to use an external monitor or not to get the BRAW. Real talk I think either is a great option and will give beautiful images.
