- Lazy days and cotton candy skies.
Shot on the LUMIX S5 IIX with a Tiffen BPM 1/8 and Freewell VND. The first few clips were shot in ProRes 5.9K at 1.9Gbps to a Samsung T5. The rest were shot in 5.9K BRAW with the Blackmagic Video Assist. Lenses were the LUMIX 35MM & 50MM f1.8.
Graded in Resolve using the FilmUnlimited powergrades.
You inspired me a lot bro. Your video is like a combination of gorgeous pictures rather than a typical boring story telling stuff. Amazing job. Keep it up!
Thanks dude, really appreciate that
Love the shot at 0:58
Thanks! I really liked that one as well, the light and the perspective turned out real nice.
The color grade / lighting at the end gave my goose bumps. Well done my friend!

More to come! Have a Vol. 3 almost finished and then another more technical on comparing the codecs and vlog exposure.
@@brandonrudehow was the footage on the og s5 + braw to this new s5iix + braw?
@@Filmsimulation tbh I haven’t really noticed a difference in the image itself. The autofocus is definitely I nice change though. The biggest difference I’ve seen regarding image is the OG 200mbps codec and what you get now, especially in the high bitrate ProRes.
@@brandonrude people in the group of panasonic keeps saying the s5 + braw sucks, texture is bad and the images are muddy, not sure how but you used both and posted some clips so I really cant tell, I am really worried now as I use the OG s5 and I just bought the VA12g
great video bro, I have recently got my s5iix and I'm having a lot of with it, keep the vids coming bro
More to come! And yeah it’s a great camera, very happy I upgraded from the original.
lovely
Thanks!
You're the hope and shine in this Lumix ecosystem. I LOVE THE COLORS in BRAW. Do I need to purchase for recording in BRAW with S5 series? I'm gonna be a fan of your artworks.
Wow thank you! BRAW recording is included with the original S5 and the S5 IIX. If you buy the S5 II you need to purchase the additional license for BRAW.
The footage on 1:09 was great!
The light was so nice that evening
nice!
Thanks!
Loved the ttripod shots out of the back - were those just hand held or on a tripod!? How was the color grading process for you? I shoot on a S1H but the S5 IIX looks really enticing as a bcam
Thanks! And yeah I set up the tripod in the back, set the focus and exposure and hoped for the best. I’ve found the grading process to be pretty straightforward, especially when shooting ProRes to the ssd. You can definitely push the colors quite a bit.
So good man, i dont know how you manage to get such a soft image out of that native glass, even with a promist filter! Looks so pleasing, i would never guess its Lumix glass. Have you tried the prores yet? its my main selling point on this camera, but havent seen much footage. Your braw footage is the best on youtube right now imo.
Wow man I really appreciate that! I do love this combo of BRAW with the S5. TBH I think the grade might be providing some of the softness through the contrast and separation plus a touch of grain. I sometimes use the Glow effect set to soft light too, which can help. I have tried the ProRes and I’ve been impressed with it. The next video I’m putting up was shot all on the ProRes so keep an eye out for that.
@@brandonrude grades are on point man, nice skin tones, soft roll offs but sharp enough, great stuf! I'll be keeping an eye out for that prores too!
Thinking of getting the S5IIX, but your previous Hawaii video is so good, the S5 might be a B-Roll camera, have you seen any noticeable differences when editing the two together if you have?
Yeah I can see a small but noticeable difference between the internal recording options (the higher data rate of the IIX is a slight winner for me eyes). The ProRes IMO looks considerably better and is much easier to edit than the compressed codecs. For BRAW recording I don’t notice any difference. I still think the S5 is a fantastic camera (esp for a B cam) but you can’t rely on the autofocus.
Hello. Did you try to shoot in 4k Aps-c (or S35) braw mode? It has the advantage to reduce the rolling shutter to 10ms (witch is the biggest weakness of this camera in Full Frame mode in my opinion). It would be interesting to see how it performs with camera movements.
I didn’t know that, I’ll have to try it. The rolling shutter is pretty bad, in the next video I’m posting there’s a couple shots from a train and when we pass by buildings they look almost diagonal!
How would you compare the braw from the S5 IIX with the braw from the S5? And compare to the internal braw from the the bmpcc4k? With the S5II(x) Panasonic apparently finally fixed their external RAW output.
Each chroma channel gets delivered separately and without debayering which results in tons of texture, resolution and the addition of highlight recovery.
I'm actually working on a video lining up the same shot with each codec side by side. It's kind of hard to compare to the P4K due to the BRAW from the S5 simply due to the sensor size and resolution, the latter coming out far sharper. I recently picked up the Pocket 6K G2 when I traded in my OG S5 so going to use that as a closer comparison.
But yes, having the highlight recovery now with the IIX is huge and something I missed with the og S5.
Nice, the end is a bit too dark and red
Very nice Video! How about sound, when shooting BRAW? Can you shoot BRAW and internal Codec on SD Card at the same time?
Thanks! Sounds comes through fine, though I find it usually comes out off by 1 to 2 frames. Easy enough to fix but odd and a little annoying. I don't think you can shoot BRAW and internal at the same time. I think you might be able to record internally and then record proxy files to the video assist, but not in BRAW.
Really amazing look you got at 1:15! Was that BRAW with the BMP 1/8?
That’s my favorite shot! And yes, BRAW and 1/8 BPM. The light was so beautiful and the mist coming off the lake just enhanced it even more
Verry nice! How did you use the Film unlimited tree? Did you add a CST at the start with Vlog to Log c3? Most time i use the powergrade it looks very oversaturated... :/
I’ve been using the Color Managed version he provided in an update earlier this year to avoid that very question. On some shots I felt it looked better with the CST and some without it. Even still it does look a little over saturated sometimes. Try reducing Color Boost slightly, even just -1 or so. I’ve found that helps take the edge off.
@@brandonrude thanks, in which node you reduce it? Do you do other major changes in some nodes?
@@Andy8373 I do it in the first “Correction” node. Aside from that I tweak exposure in the “Lin/Exp” node, wb in the “Exp/Bal” node, and then I generally turn off or reduce the output of the the “Film Blur” node. In this video I reduced the film grain as well.
Love the vintage -- can I call it that? -- aesthetic but I have to ask: what happened to the BMPCC? Given up on the brand?
Far from it actually! I recently traded in my original S5 for the Pocket 6K G2. Recently I’ve been using the LUMIX as I’ve been doing some stills as well.
@@brandonrude , I'm attending a Blackmagic roadshow tomorrow ahead of committing to the 6k G2. So looking forward to it -- and dreading the large files. (Still loving your films, by the way. And please tell your fiancée/wife that we know. We all know. 😁)
@@meganwrite hah I’ll let her know! Enjoy that roadshow! And yeah the file sizes can get large fast, but thankfully shooting at 12:1 compression not only keeps them manageable but gives solid results.
What differences do you see in shooting with and without the BM video assist?
Biggest difference for me is the 12-bit color, which I think gives a more organic, filmic sort of image to my eye. That and the BRAW files are much easier to work with in Resolve, both in terms of computing resource but also the flexibility of having a RAW file. Downsides of course are that it’s extra equipment to have and carry around and the files are huge, which isn’t an issue for like a planned shoot but for walking around or travel stuff it can be a bit much.
Thanks for answering, I actually have the bmpcc 4K and I know how convenient BRAW is to work with, I wanted to know how big of a downgrade will I have in terms of image quality with the 10bit of the Lumix which is coming to my door next week btw. @@brandonrude
@@elieh.studio there definitely is a tradeoff, but real talk that full frame sensor is really nice compared to M43. I do love the lumix overall and it’s nice for certain scenarios. One big change though is getting used to that small screen and complex menu system. Both cameras are nice to have and I find I gravitate towards one or the other depending on what im shooting as both have particular strengths and limitations
