I bought the latest setup from ron brown and I will be testing it today. I'm wondering if there should be two separate tool widths used. Start with a wider blade and then transition to a thinner blade to finish the cut. As I sat watching the video again thinking through my comment above.I'm wondering why not have a carbide insert at the tip of the tool that is slightly wider than the body of the tool. Same concept u c in circular saw blades.The carbide tips are wider than the blade body itself.

So you said the moisture content was high. You also sealed it before it was dry. Did you have issues with warping or cracking as it dried. I have an opportunity to pick up some sumac. Looks like beautiful wood. Love the shape of the bowl. Thanks.?

I’m kind of shocked you had a piece large enough to turn with few cracks. All the Osage Orange I’ve ever worked with had cracks and knots galore. I’m jealous

The parting tool, which in fact acts as a scrapper, will be at or near 90 degrees to the workpiece. Whenever I get myself in such a situation, I'm rewarded with a catch. To get out of that situation, I would go to a traditional parting tool or, I would grind a negative rake on the tool supplied since the bottom part as been designed to reduce the friction against it as you enter deeper into the groove produced.

Interesting video. Here's one comment I would make: It would have been a lot faster and easier (remember those aching arms) to do the initial hollowing and most of the outside shaping with a hatchet or carving axe. It would also have saved some wear and tear on those nice gouges. Also, a bent gouge makes it a lot easier to do the bottom of bowls. It's hard to get a good cutting angle down there with a straight gouge.

Beautiful bowl as always and the horse chestnut is great! Keep up the great work. A friend sent me a text yesterday with a 21’ diameter cherry burl he wants a bowl out of and i get some wood. Can’t wait but gonna let it dry for about a year.

Steve and Tanya: Thanks for a great video! In my original video I used a traditional 1/16" parting tool. The new "P" type parting tool should be set up with the centerline of the 1/2" blade on the centerline of the lathe. That is the cutting point will be 1/4" above center. That will eliminate virtually all friction and greatly reduce the heat. I recommend not widening the kerf as that can cause a misalignment of the rings during glue up. We all learn as we go and this is an important discovery. I will be releasing an updated video myself covering what we have learned over the first year of its release. Thanks again. Ron

For the width of each ring I use the thickness of the wood.... is this correct?

Hi Tanya and Steve. Thanks for show the video. I bought the easy cut system like yours. At the beguining cut was horrible. Now the cut is perfect, the problem are the rings, I use the templetes like you in the video, but when They are cut it degrees are not the same in esch ring so when I glue them is not so perfect like yours, at the end the variación betwren them is to big and the bowl goes wrong. I don,t know What can i do because I think I am doing the same as you. Thanks Vicente from Spain

I have to pick Tanya’s, I prefer the smooth finish it helps show off the grain. Though both would look good on my fireplace mantel.
