Lovely bowl Tanya!! You stayed on it and got a lovely bowl for your efforts. I've always used #10 coarse threaded WOOD screws for faceplating. Many other screws are too brittle for the stress the screws to take and they break instead. Hope this helps and thanks for sharing another wonderful turning! 👍🏾
Awesome bowl Tanya! Sorry to hear about the screws breaking! I had one break this week too and forgot about it and took a chunk out of my gouge. I noticed those bark inclusions in some of the Coffe wood pieces I have turned too. Thought they were strange.
Thank you so much, Dan! Broke screws suck!! I took a nice chip out of my hurricane ⅝ bowl gouge. It's not fun to fix either. Is there any progress on Steve's 395? So excited for this. Have a good Labor Day weekend. Take care, Tanya 🤗
Thank you so much, Ronnie! That is my hope for all my pieces. 100+ years later. There is nothing nicer than a wooden bowl. Have a wonderful Labor Day weekend! Take care, Tanya 🤗
A beautiful bowl. Thanks for never giving up on this piece. Hard work always pays with big rewards. Have a great Labor Day weekend and God Bless you always.
I love turning Coffee Wood but here in Ontario, Canada it is a protected species and only down trees can be harvested. I use my carbide detail tool and cut groves on both sides of the broken screws so I can get pliers on them.
That’s one Enormous bowl. Very nice. I had a screw break off and used a plug cutter. It’s a sorta drill bit that cuts plugs in wood so you can cover over a drill hole. They come in a multitude of sizes. Get one that cuts a hole/plug larger than the screw head so you will be able to pop out the screw. 😊
When I first started turning, just after dinosaurs became extinct, my mentor told me never give up, working with wood is a life lesson. You earned your stripes today. Keep safe.C.
Thank you so much, Clive! I doubt you are that old. Sounds like you had a pretty darn good mentor. Thanks, I needed this🥰 Have a blessed weekend! Take care, Tanya 🤗
Good evening, Tanya. Very, very nice! I am not familiar with coffee wood but curious if it has an aroma. Being frustrated happens to most folks at some point. Guessing the next time you look at your gorgeous bowl you will see the beauty and forget the past issues. When I was growing up at home, Mom had a paper on a kitchen cabinet that read, " When God wants to make a man, He puts him in some kind of storm." That has been over 60 years ago and I still say it out loud from time to time. Thanks, Mom. Nothing can steal your joy.
Hi 👋, Tanya , great looking 👀 bowl, I thought wood turning was relaxing that’s why I sit here having my coffee watching you do the work, 😂, I don’t get stressed out 😂, Here’s a glass of wine for you to relax with meditate in the bath with candles, 🍷🛀🏻🕯️🔊 and soft music to relax to, Enjoy, Going back to the screws, you are using for your face plate fitted to the timber, I have used some screws that I’ve got a nut head type set fitting on the top, they are quite short, about 1 1/2 inches long, I think you can get unless and you definitely can get them longer, but you have to have a special Drive bit to put them in, Stay Safe, I hope you both have a lovely weekend, 😂 Phil from the moulin France.
Thank you so much, Phil! I appreciate the wine, bath, candles, and soft music. I am going to look into screws like that. Hopefully, that will fix any further problems. Have a blessed weekend! Take care, Tanya 🤗
@@TanyaBecherWoodturningHi Tanya , I think the screws you are looking 👀 for are called Lug Screws, they are quite expensive, but you must make sure that you get the ones without the barbs on the underside of the head, as these are used to help counterbore the wood, Which you obviously do not want when you are fixing screws into a face plate, as you will find you’ll have problems and doing it, however, you might be able to grind them off on a bench grinder, but you’ve got to make sure they are clean and round, I purchased mine many years ago from a place back in the UK, you will still need to counterbore, and I suggest putting a bit of tallow or candle wax on the thread will make it then easier to unscrew them, Good luck. Stay safe. Look forward to next Thursday yippee, 😂, Phil from the moulin, Ps I do not know why, but I had to search back in what I had been watching earlier today to see whether you had responded, there’s obviously something untoward going on, as I could not see that there have been any response. I’ve had similar problems from other people. Stay safe, Phil
The best screws to use for me are Simpson Strong Tie screws. They are used to hold homes together with all the metal straps and braces etc. used in home building. I've used two different sizes, same screws for over a year. They don't break.
Coffee is a lovely wood. My first piece was sopping wet when I got it. Rough turned it and set aside. Came back 6 months later and it was warping faster than I could turn the old warp out. Set it aside for another 6 months and when I came back to it the same thing happened. Couldn’t put it aside any longer because it decided to go to pieces. Oh well. Next time you have broken screws, use the parting tool as close as possible inside and outside the line of screws. Try to part down as deep as the tip of the screws. A pair of pliers should be able to break out the thin ring of wood with the screws. Might take 5 minutes with all the screws broken off. BTW, beautiful bowl!
Hey Tanya, it did turn out very nice. I like guard dog deck type screws very much. Bought at my local home improvement store. They take a #2 phillips, or a #2 square screw tip. Good luck.
Thank you so much, Vern! I think I will pass on coffee wood after this one. It is beautiful wood but a pain in you know what. Have a wonderful weekend! Take care, Tanya 🤗
Glad that you decided to stay away from Tapcon screws. They are very strong but extremely brittle. If you use an impact driver for concrete, there is a high probability of the screw breaking. We always use a drill instead of an impact driver to avoid the impact when installing in concrete.
@@sbk8039 I make plenty, but they're not from not using a faceplate. The Oneway Big Bite is a solid hold but needs tailstock support. You'll never have to worry about breaking a screw, and you can adjust the alignment of a half-roughed blank to better balance the grain once you've gained a better idea of grain orientation. Adjusting a faceplate by backing out screws and adding shims is a PITA.
You adapted and overcame. Beautiful work
Thank you so much, Jeff!

Using a faceplate was your first mistake. I love my Big Bite chuck spur.
I never heard of that thing, and I have always used faceplate. It would be worth a try.
Why is it a mistake? Many people use many different means to get a finished vessel. Certainly you don't make any 😁

AND ANOTHER REASON! I core big blanks, and the screws from a faceplate mess up the innermost core.
