    My first 'real' lathe was a 3520A. It was one of the first ones to come from Asia. I liked it better than the B and C models. One reason was they changed the speed ranges from 0 to 1500, and 1 to 3000, to 50/1200 and 50 to 3000. The 1500 range was just right for coring and for smaller bowls. 1200 is too slow for smaller bowls. High speed range did not work well for coring with the McNaughton..... Also, the B and C models put that cone on the headstock tower for more clearance for 'easier access to the backs of the bowls. This makes for more vibration when turning out the inside of a bowl. Under 6 inches, no problem. 12 inch made for more of a problem. Also, I need the almost 0 rpm speed range for sanding out my warped bowls. Main reason I got the PM was for the sliding headstock. I don't like bending over or reaching out away from my body to turn bowls. Standing up straight is far better....

    • @TanyaBecherWoodturning
      @TanyaBecherWoodturning  ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not too familiar with powermatic, so I appreciate this information. One thing I wish this powermatic would have is a digital readout. I am a bit spoiled with that on my rikon70-3040.

    • @robohippy
      @robohippy ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When learning, I never had any kind of read out until I picked up a Vicmark 240 which has the pivoting headstock head. It is some thing that people always ask about, but I never paid any attention to. Since I picked up the Vicmark, I try to guess what speed I am turning at, if I ever remember to look.....
      My 3520A had a small fan under the phase converter, and I had to put a screen on top to keep the chips from falling down and plugging up the fan. Also, the set screw on the banjo is how I think they should be made. I had one made after I stripped the second lever which was cheap pot metal on a hardened screw. That sliding T handle like on any vice is far better.
