Darren’s Woodworks
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 11 ต.ค. 2012
I’ve been working with trees for almost 40 years. I farmed trees such as citrus, walnut, olive, and avocados. For many reasons I have cut a lot of trees into firewood in my day. I noticed how beautiful the wood was inside, yet I had no idea how to do any sort of wood working. About 10 years ago I came across a very interesting piece of wood, and I finally decided to make something with it. I let it dry for a year still not knowing what to do. I bought a carving tool and attached it to my grinder and carved a bowl, and sanded for 2 weeks. It was beautiful. I loved it. It was very satisfying work. I even made a few more. It was very time consuming to make them. One day I met a man who did woodturning. He could make, and sand a bowl in just a few hours. Well that did it for me. I bought a lathe that I could not afford and began woodturning. And now I have the opportunity to show other people something that I love to do. I hope you enjoy the videos. Thank you for watching my videos.
The finished Gingko bowl

Woodturning a walnut Rimmed Bowl
มุมมอง 878หลายเดือนก่อน
I recently made a bowl similar to this bowl. However it had epoxy all the way to the rim. So on this bowl I wanted a wood rim. I added a flat piece of walnut to become the rim. There was a little epoxy showing on the rim, but I think it adds to the unique look of this bowl. I just had a 3 day arts and crafts show where I was able to highlight these 2 pieces in this event. I couldn’t believe how...
Woodturning-it’s what’s inside that counts.

Manzanita Burl that was burned in a fire we had some time ago. Hard to say if this guy was burned a couple years ago or 50 years ago. They don’t rot. Just sit there for many years. When they wash up on our beach I pick them up and take them home for a future project. You never know what might be inside of a Burl. You just have to start turning and hopefully find a beautiful bowl.
Woodturning- Star Pine (Norfolk Island Pine)
มุมมอง 7633 หลายเดือนก่อน
This tree was removed just down the road from my house. As soon as I saw the tree I decided to make a bowl from it. The star shape found on the inside where the limbs come together is the reason for making these turnings.

To this point in my woodturning career this is my finest turning project yet. At least on the beauty and attention to detail. Thanks for watching.
Woodturning a piece of Spalted Birch,
มุมมอง 4183 หลายเดือนก่อน
I cut a Birch tree trunk a few months ago. I just tossed it on the ground and waited until I saw mushrooms. That’s when I was time to start turning. It was almost to Late. It was very punky, soft and easily torn grain. Birch is a very beautiful wood when it spalted. Every time I have a piece, it’s one of the most interesting pieces on my table. Most everyone picks it up and asks asks about it. ...
Apricot Wood, I didn’t expect all the color
มุมมอง 4.9K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
I recentlyRemoved and apricot tree and I decided to make something out of the wood. I didn’t normally like FRUIT wood As it cracks a lot during the drying process. But since lately I’ve gotten into more epoxy repairs I thought that would just make a beautiful highlight if it does crack.

Woodturning Bowl from Smashed car tree
มุมมอง 5324 หลายเดือนก่อน
This was a special piece for some friends who had a tree fall on their car. The car was Completely totaled, as you can see. Bruce the owner of the car’s husband who you see in the video was instrumental in the cleanup of this tree. He is a bee keeper and fortunately he had a forklift available to help lift huge logs. We were able to lift and load the logs onto his trucks and have them delivered...
Woodturning Eugenia platter into a bowl

This Was a big Eugenia Tree that was growing too close to the roof. I’ve trimmed the tree several times over The years. It finally grew too close to the roof of the house and the owner decided it was time for the tree To go. At time I made this piece originally, I was looking for crotch wood. This Tree had a large section of wood that I thought might produce a nice crotch view. It was soft wo...
Woodturning- The Beauty of Cherry is Hard to Believe
มุมมอง 7K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
A local cherry tree that needed to be removed due to lack of space. I first thought it was too small to make something out of. I kept the trunk section where the limbs branched off hoping to find some interesting crotch grain. I was well rewarded and quite surprised to see how beautiful this piece turned out. The cut off limbs add a lot of character that I wasn’t expecting. I was also quite sur...
Woodturning Gnarled Oak Navajo Bowl
มุมมอง 4.7K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
This piece of Red Oak wood had a big bulging knot that I hoped had some interesting twisted grain that would make interesting looking bowl. I don’t usually turn Oak wood. I’ve made a few but it’s not one of my favorite woods to work with. This piece and several others were part of a large oak tree that fell on car that belonged to some dear friends of mine. Some of the nicest people I know. The...

Hallo, mir gefällt das mit der Rinde sehr gut. Ich liebe sowas 🤩 Sehr schön gemacht 👏👌
Thank you very much Michael
Lovely. I have 7 of these giant Hollywood junipers in my backyard , they are an absolute treasure
Thank you Letty, Hollywood Juniper is a beautiful plant. I rarely cut them down. But when I do I love to keep a piece or 2 of the wood for turning. It’s such a gorgeous color.
Nice work Darren Thanks for sharing
Thank you Walt always a pleasure to hear from you
Very nice, I love the rework.
Thank you. Just a little touch up that helped this piece sell during a show b
Great once again
Excellent! Superb. Nice work Darren. Thank you for sharing!

Looks good Dazza mate. Could definitely see myself eating peanuts out of that bowl.
Thank you Mike. Just a quick finishing touch on a nice little bowl. Appreciate your comments.
Muito linda!!! Parabéns Gratidão
Darren what a great result mate it turned out really smart, well done.
Thank you Alan. Really appreciate your comments
I enjoy your videos, the way you edit them seems fine with me. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Robert appreciate the feedback.
Gotta love a hollow form great job 👏
Thank you Richard. It was a nice one.
Beautiful bowl Darren! It's amazing how mold and fungi affect the wood grain. Spectacular looking piece!!
Thank you David.
Very nice. the cactus juice is way to firm up this beautiful piece of wood.
Thank you David. I will be trying that soon.
Got some beautiful spalting in that piece 😍. What have you figured out about your lathe?
Thank you. I found a loose connection on the speed control switch. Hopefully that’s all it was.
Turned out really beautiful Darren. Funky wood is the best. I think your presentation is doing well. I like seeing the process and hearing what you are thinking throughout.
Thank you. Appreciate the feedback. Thanks for watching my videos
I ENJOY SEE THE WHOLE PROCESS DARREN. I WILL SAY THE MORE DESCRIPTION OF WHAT YOU ARE DOING IS BEST, SUCH AS TIPS, DOES AND DONTS AND ANYTHING THAT MAY BE HELPFUL TO SOMONE LEARNING.
Thank you Hector. Always a pleasure to hear from a friend.
I watch from beginning to end. It is all part of the creative process. I enjoy your work.
Thank you Garyk, appreciate your watching my videos. And thanks for the feedback.
Very nice work Darren. I've been turning since 1978 or 9. I still love the sound of the tools cutting. I watch turning videos from beginning to end at normal speed. My Laguna 1836 stopped like that around 2 months ago. Then it ran just perfectly for a couple of months. Then, it started stopping a couple of times on each project. A few days ago it started randomly slowing down or stopping. Then it stopped and stayed stopped. I hope your PM doesn't do the same thing.
Thank you and me too. I did find a loose connection on the speed control. I hope that was the issue. I was also putting the machine in reverse for sanding and I noticed I flipped the switch a too soon and I had a little problem. So I stopped and fixed the connection and so far so good. Thank you again
I watch the whole clip, if its long I will watch at 1.5 speed.👍🏻
Thank you KB, always nice to know someone watches all the way through.
That sure is a beautiful piece of wood, both grain and colour are amazing mate. Can't wait to see the finished product. As to your question at the beginning, I never skip through your videos, I love the way you do a few passes, then stop to show us how the piece is looking, it's a great format and one of the reasons this Aussie subscribed to your chanel Thanks for the content Dazza.
Thank you Mike. I hope I finish it soon myself
Were your tools and hands black afterwards by any chance?
Thank you for watching my videos. No, my hands were not black. That does happen with some woods but I didn’t have that problem with this particular piece. Thanks again.
Gorgeous piece.
Thank you Ramwoods. You give me hope. The comment just prior to your was not happy.
All that work for a plastic container...guess your time is cheap, mine isn't
Thanks Patricia. I was just at an arts fair. Guess what the most viewed piece on the table was? Not my favorite things to turn, but they sure get attention to your table. I’ve learned that not everyone has the same taste.
Great job Darren. That must be a heck of a mess to clean up afterwards, It’s raining dried epoxy
Oh yes it is. It looks like a ticker tape parade on Wall Street.
Darren turned out pretty cool and the colour are smashing to, well done.
Thank you Alan. It received a lot of attention at the Mother’s Day arts and craft show this weekend.
Very Nice. I love colors and contrast.
Thank you David. I just had an arts and crafts show for Mother’s Day. Guess what got the most attention.
Beautiful bowl!!
Thank you Lori, appreciate your comment
Nicely done. Love the color with the walnut.
Thank you. Appreciate your watching and comments.
Well done mate, the blue surprisingly really pops with the walnut, I would have gone with red epoxy myself, but I doubt that would have looked as good. Anyway Dazza, I mentioned Mango Wood to you a while ago. Have you looked into that yet? One job, Dazza, one job. 😄😄😄
Mango will be very difficult for me to find in my area. But always keeping my eye out for some. Thanks for watching my videos
Cool. Those are some wild colors!
Yes indeed they are.
Darren with all the hiccups mate it turned out really good, well done.
Thank you Alan. I can’t argue with the results. I was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful colors.
Great video, the finished thing looks very nice.
Thank you Very much. I really appreciate your comment.
Long sleeves on a lathe is asking for trouble
That is true. Cold days don’t help with that problem. And flying chips are also a problem with that. I thought the first complaint I got would be the earbuds hanging down the front of my shirt. I usually tuck that inside but I did see it on this video while I was editing. Thank you. I’ll keep that in mind.
Looks good Dazza mate. The swirls in the epoxy are out of this world.
Thank you Mike. I love it when something turns out well.
Amazing project love it
Thank you Ray. Hope you are having a great day
Very nice, a fine piece of art.
Thank you David. Appreciate your comments. Thank you for watching my videos
Very cool project great job
Thank you Ray. I just keep trying to get better
I like that you choose challenging pieces to turn. They are hard but interesting 👍
Thank you James. I like unusual wood.
That is some very interesting wood. I guess the closest thing we have is Osage Orange or some call it hedge. I try to use epoxy sparingly since it's so hard to keep my tools sharp when using it, even carbide. However, good job on the piece 👍👍 I like it 😊
Thanks again James. The part I dislike the most about epoxy is that it’s slow to remove the material if you use beveled carbide. Straight carbide removes it fast but leaves deep chip out. But it does come off fast. As for dulling the tools you are right about that. I use a diamond wheel that I can hold the carbide tip on and resharpen it an about 5 seconds. I just replace them and resharpen when I have a few to do. I shape the beveled carbide right on the tool. I just swing it back and forth. And it’s done. One day I’ll show how I do it. Thank you.
Really didn't expect that ugly bit of wood you started out with to yield that colour. Wasn't sure at first about how I'd feel about a wood base with the resin on top, but I really think it looks good mate. Nice job Dazza.
Thank you Mike. I really appreciate the feedback. Always looking to see how others feel about my work. I am currently adjusting to the resin work and trying to see how I like it as well. I have another one planned for next week. This one is similar, but hopefully with a wood rim on top. Not just resin. In my opinion, a little resin goes along way. It’s really about the wood.
That is a fantastic bowl. The reddish-purple color of the wood is very cool. Well Done!!!
Thank you John. That is the very reason I showed that piece of ugly wood. The first time I was given one of these by a friend. I was told don’t worry what’s inside will blow you away. He was right and I’ve been collecting them ever since. Appreciate your comments. They help my channel grow and you are welcome to give me you feedback anytime. Thank you.
That turned out really cool.
Thank you my fellow. I appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos and leave helpful comment. You are Always welcome here.
I wished you have used more of the wood and less resin of this project otherwise it turned out nice.
Thank you one turn. This was a trial bowl and I agree and am making a second one with that very idea in mind. I like wood at the top not a resin top on most items. Thanks for the feedback and watching my videos.
Amazing Darren, it is just beautiful to the finish bowl.
Thank you Hector. I great compliment from a great artist as yourself.
I have a beautiful Manzanita Walking stick.. real nice wood .
Yes it is very interesting wood
Nice as always.
Thank you Walt. Always nice to hear from you
