Woodturning-it’s what’s inside that counts.

  • Manzanita Burl that was burned in a fire we had some time ago. Hard to say if this guy was burned a couple years ago or 50 years ago. They don’t rot. Just sit there for many years. When they wash up on our beach I pick them up and take them home for a future project. You never know what might be inside of a Burl. You just have to start turning and hopefully find a beautiful bowl.

That is a fantastic bowl. The reddish-purple color of the wood is very cool. Well Done!!!

Thank you John. That is the very reason I showed that piece of ugly wood. The first time I was given one of these by a friend. I was told don’t worry what’s inside will blow you away. He was right and I’ve been collecting them ever since. Appreciate your comments. They help my channel grow and you are welcome to give me you feedback anytime. Thank you.

Really didn't expect that ugly bit of wood you started out with to yield that colour.
Wasn't sure at first about how I'd feel about a wood base with the resin on top, but I really think it looks good mate.
    Nice job Dazza.

Thank you Mike. I really appreciate the feedback. Always looking to see how others feel about my work. I am currently adjusting to the resin work and trying to see how I like it as well. I have another one planned for next week. This one is similar, but hopefully with a wood rim on top. Not just resin. In my opinion, a little resin goes along way. It’s really about the wood.

That is some very interesting wood. I guess the closest thing we have is Osage Orange or some call it hedge. I try to use epoxy sparingly since it's so hard to keep my tools sharp when using it, even carbide. However, good job on the piece 👍👍 I like it 😊

Thanks again James. The part I dislike the most about epoxy is that it’s slow to remove the material if you use beveled carbide. Straight carbide removes it fast but leaves deep chip out. But it does come off fast. As for dulling the tools you are right about that. I use a diamond wheel that I can hold the carbide tip on and resharpen it an about 5 seconds. I just replace them and resharpen when I have a few to do. I shape the beveled carbide right on the tool. I just swing it back and forth. And it’s done. One day I’ll show how I do it. Thank you.

I wished you have used more of the wood and less resin of this project otherwise it turned out nice.

Thank you one turn. This was a trial bowl and I agree and am making a second one with that very idea in mind. I like wood at the top not a resin top on most items. Thanks for the feedback and watching my videos.
