Olive wood Bowl

  • I recently removed a small Olive tree for a regular client of mine. It was getting to big for the spot it was in. Roots were getting under the pavers and starting to lift them up. Leaves we falling off into the gutters and plugging the drain. All good reason to remove a tree that is too close to your house.
Now comes the Bowl I intend to make for this client. Actually, I’m making 2 bowls for her. One for each of her daughters. So hopefully they don’t catch wind of these videos until after they are finished. These will be turned green and then let dry for a period of time. I think they will end up having epoxy mixed in for the finished project. Olive wood tends to crack a lot. Not a problem when using epoxy. I love the smell of Olive wood when it’s green. It’s very distinctive. I’m not sure about when it’s dry. I suppose it looses its smell as many woods often do. You know how you can by aromatic cedar for your chest of drawers? Well I want Aromatic Olive wood in mine. I know I’m rambling, but I thought it would e interesting to see if anyone really reads these descriptions. Let me know if you do. I should have a prize for the first person who mentions this. Thanks for watching my videos. And a special thanks for reading the description.

Olive is one of the best woods to turn!

Thank you. I looked for a spider, I didn’t see anything. Can you be more specific as to where to look?

Oh and by the way. This would not be my first spider on one of my videos. Check out my mulberry video several of them got flung out of that wood onto the wall and were crawling up in plain sight

I’ve started sealing end grain with Elmers glue on my wet turned bowls. I like it better than latex house paint.

Now that’s a thought. Elmers should work great

After rough turning boil the bowl and dry for a month, all the shrinking has stopped and the bowl will not crack. It relaxes the grain.👍👍👍👍

Thank you Mark, I have not tried that. Most the time I don’t get cracks that bad, except on fruit wood. Something new that helps is great news.

Living in central CA with temps in upper 90-100s for 3 months cracking is a minor problem if after cutting a piece water based paint is applied to the ends and wood stored on a pallet and tarred. We have a lot of olive and pistachio, both very beautiful woods. Boiling a rough bowl or microwaving are also good methods. Keep up the good work.

Thank you Jerry, I moved from the Central Valley 35 years ago on account of that heat. Headed for the coast and never looked back. Thanks for the tip.

Where do you source your olive? I seem to get a lot in Central California and it always smells like wine ,I'm on the coast around vineyards so i know wine. Try waxing the ends I have good luck with that.

Thanks Dennis, I have a tree trimming and removal business on the south coast of California. my wood comes from various jobs I do. We do have a lot of Olive around us However I remove very little. Though I’ve planted hundreds of
Them. I’ll try waxing my next bowl to see if it helps. This project has 2 bowls going to the same person.
