I get that but I also don’t think it makes sense to clear coat a bumper with a bunch of damage. That, in my opinion, is a waste of time and material. City cars are very beat up on the bumpers. Iam not a fan of painting or clear coating over damage on a bumper. And blending is also a good way to show DIYers how to repair there own scuffs marks on there bumpers.

You could re-clear the whole bumper but that means you would have to sand the whole bumper and possibly remove the bumper to paint the whole bumper.

@J.Lulo_ But could you just spray clear right up to the edge and a little over the old clear? I guess it won't work, but I don't know why.

No you can not do that. If you spray clear coat over un-sanded clear coat it will peel and flake off. And if you don’t spray the blender it won’t transition into the old clear coat properly.

Yes , control coat is the same as drop coat. Make sure your using the right temperature reducer and also make sure to apply the paint medium wet coats. Applying the paint too wet can cause blotchiness and too dry can cause tiger stripes on the paint. And make sure to check your spray gun to make sure it’s spraying even patterns.

I think it’s between satin and flat. It keeps getting flat the longer its drys. In the paint booth it’s forced dried at 130 degrees for 30 minutes. After then it keeps flattening as it dries.

You can achieve satin depending on how much flattening agent you add to the clear coat. You just have to find the right mix ratio for the flattening agent.

You can spray the blender after the clear has hardened but the blend won’t be as effective as when you apply the blender when the clear coat is fresh. @@J.Lulo_ Thanks sir! I think it might be too late as I have tried compounding and polishing the area several times now and still I have a line of discoloration. This is on dark maroon metallic paint.

Sorry to hear that. Don’t feel bad we all make mistakes. That’s how we learn.

@@J.Lulo_ Not to drag this out but the first time I did a blend it was on metallic silver and I never used a blender and ended up with no visible line present. so I thought" what the hell is this blender crap used for?"! Now I know.

Some colors are less noticeable on blends, like silver but darker colors will show the blend area if done improperly.

The paint I used was a pre-mixed car paint that I bought from auto. Autozone carry’s a certain amount of car paint that comes pre-mixed in a can by color code. If you have a paint gun you can go to a car paint store and have them mix the paint for you which is the better way to do it if you have the resources.

Yes you should definitely be able to achieve the flat clear coat look by spraying matte clear over regular clear.

It’s a cardboard test panel that’s made by the paint company. In my opinion it shouldn’t matter if it’s metal or cardboard, but they do make metal test panels as well. I’ve never had a problem using cardboard test panels.

Most mixing cups have that mix ratio. If yours doesn’t just use the 4:1 ratio and on the 1 parts ratio use it as two.

If you only have base coat on the car you should sand everything down again and reapply your base coat. After you do that you can go ahead and apply your clear.

What sandpaper grit do you recommend for it?

1000 grit sandpaper should do the job.

No, that shouldn’t happen if it is prepared properly. I do this kind of repair only when there is a hard body line to work off of.

You can use compound in the door jams. You can use compound anywhere where there is paint on the car.
