    Fascinating! I never knew what mixing auto paint entailed. I always knew the color was retrieved from the door jamb. And I've seen firsthand what happens when certain auto bodies we used didn't paint match. I have a good friend who works at a reputable auto body and he will be fixing my car in a couple of weeks (I slid in ice, nearly took out my mailbox and destroyed my mirror, door and rocker panel). I own a 2013 Accord in Hematite Metallic and was told that being an odd color, and being metallic it will be a harder color to get right and may take some extra work, therefore costing a little more than what was originally quoted. I never knew just how hard this job can be.

      Yes it can be a difficult process to paint cars and match the colors on the cars. There are so many different kinds of paint systems and none of them are equal. Over the years cars can be painted by different paint systems making it harder to match the colors over the years. So in a nutshell to make certain colors match shops have go the extra mile and do extra work to make the color match. Like paint extra panels to make sure the color can be blended properly so it looks closely matched to the current color on the car.

      Good to know! Thank you for the information! I am a little nervous about my car being fixed but I also have no doubt that my friend and his crew will take their time and not cut any corners to ensure my car comes out looking as good as it did before my accident.
      *Note to self.... I cannot drive on ice. Next time I will call in to work!*

      Now, the colors are usually found in the door jam, but that wasn't the case 15+ yrs ago. They were almost always in different places per car make. My brother is new to painting, and he ran into the problem of finding a 2001 BMW paint tag. Those used to be in one of about 3 common locations: under the backside of the hood, the engine-side firewall or either strut tower. Older GM's are found in the glove box, in the center console, in the spare tire compartment or hidden in one of many rear-compartment panels (some of which are difficult to remove without breaking things). And the list goes on for the odd places you used to have to hunt for the paint tags. It's only in the last 10 yrs or so that it's become universal practice to put them in the door jams. Back in the old days, there were times it took me longer to find the paint code than to mix, adjust and touch-up the car!! At some point you're better off just mixing something close and start adjusting instead.

      You forgot to mention the worst one of all, VW and AUDI which are essentially the same company. They put a sticker in the cars trunk where the spare tire is and most of the time the color code isn’t even in there. And good luck getting into some of those trunks when you get a car with a trunk full of junk. First words out of my mouth are call the dealer and get the code. lol 😂.

    Good video… especially for me because we never used a mixing system, we mainly use single stage paint white or red fleet vehicles so we just order the paint already mixed and spray.. but I recently quit that job, so I need to learn how to use this mixing system for my next job. Thanks again. Can I hit u up for some advice? Do you have a IG? 👍

    Very informative

  • @TXGRunner

    That was interesting and informative, but assumes you have the car and the color is recent production. To make matters worse, many manufacturers recycle color codes, even within a couple of years. I'm changing the color on a car. I know what color I want, but I can't get anybody to mix it. Nobody will use the PPG or DuPont codes. They want me to take a pic of the data plate, except I don't have a $250k 1969 Dodge Charger or Plymouth Barracuda in Q5 Bright Turquoise/Seafoam Turquoise. I actually found a pic of a data plate, says "Q5" right on it, but Chrysler reused the code for different colors. The paint shops can't find it. I don't know what the purpose of PPG code 13534 or DuPont code 4960 is if their systems don't recognize the code. The funny thing is, dealers of paints for plastic models -- who use real PPG or Axalta paint -- have it down pat and mix these old colors all the time, but it is so,d in 2 oz. bottles and I need 3 liters!
    Anyway, thanks for the great explanation and letting me see what the other side of the counter sees. Cheers.

      @J.Lulo_  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      If it’s a solid color than maybe someone can show you the paint panel chips from the paint system and maybe there is a similar color in the system that might work. If they have the mix in the Axalta system they should be able to make mix as much as you need. Good luck.

      @J.Lulo_  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I’ve sprayed PPG ENVIROBASE it does have good color match but the Spies/Heckers system has a pretty good color match as well. I’ve sprayed a couple of water Bourne systems, but I still prefer to spray solvent based paint. I guess iam just old school. lol 😂.

      So you basically have to look for a local paint supplier and call them and then they’ll send out a salesman and then they’ll set you up with a paint system. Google auto body paint supplier and you should be able to find some. We use a company called Finish Master if you want to look them up and see if there in your area

    Some people are good at matching paint, but my skill is less common. I've been doing it for 20 years, so I can look at most colors and know what's in it without a recipe. I brush-touch cars, and it's a whole bunch faster when you can grab your toners and just start match right now. Most colors only take 10mins to mix, adjust and start touching. It's my only real superpower.

      That’s awesome 👏. I can tint color to a certain extent but I prefer not to have to tint because it’s hard to replicate the color twice.

    I noticed you are using your old gun. The 3m wasn't much of an upgrade? I was thinking of getting the 3m gun but might wait on it.
    Also thanks again for the advice. I have another one. Its been 2 days since I finished but noticed that i didn't clear coated the edges good enough. Would you recommend adding another clear coat or should i wet sand and then add another clear coat?

    • @J.Lulo_
      @J.Lulo_  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If the dry spots are not to bad you can sand and polish the car if there dry spots are too dry your going to have to sand and clear coat the car again. And I still use my 3M gun I just use it as a secondary spay gun.
