Control City Freak
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 22 เม.ย. 2021
This channel covers every 2 digit Interstate Highway in America, and more! I've been a roadgeek and a Control City Freak my whole life, and I've driven in every state in the Lower 48. In this channel, I'll be showing control city signs on each 1 and 2 digit (2di) Interstate Highway in the continental United States and will strive to make as complete a record as possible. I'll also be getting into the roadgeek weeds here and there, showing downtown skylines and state border crossings, and making corny jokes. I welcome all to join my geeky tour of every primary Interstate in the country!
Interstate 490: Rochester Route
As the Chiefs and Bills look to square off again in the AFC Championship Game, we turn our sights to Buffalo's neighbor, Rochester. 490 has some quirks and is definitely signed better in one direction than it is the other. Let's check out Rochester!

It's pronounced chi lye
King of trails refers to an old wagon trail that went from Canada to Galveston Texas. Also referred to as the Kaytee Trail.
As far as the Eastbound control city, Victor is a pretty significant suburb of Rochester, with a major regional shopping mall. If that's not a good control city, Syracuse would be a better choice than Albany since it's about 1 hr away and Albany is over 3 hrs away.
The END I-41 signs aren't in Illinois...it's at the Illinois-Wisconsin border. If you look at the END I-41 sign and you look further down the road, you'll see the Illinois sign that was talked about. According to the FHWA, that's not even the correct placement for those signs, is I-41 ends at the I-94/US-41 split...so shame on you, Wisconsin. It would've been better not to mark the end of I-41 if it wasn't going to be done properly.
I-390 should be I-99
You don’t want to replace Ajo with Buckeye on the Arizona 85 sign, because Ajo is in the other direction (South of I-8, rather than North).
So the airport was renamed to Fredrick Douglass only a few years ago. Before that it was just the Rochester Regional Airport, so I understand why they didn't put that on the sign
Oh that makes sense
I’d like to see Syracuse as the next control city Eastbound
Chili is pronounced Chai-lai.
Rochester is the best city in Upstate from my experience . I was there this summer for the first time. They have a waterfall in the middle of downtown. Great people, get a garbage plates 🍽️
11:15 to 11:45 Rochester had the Inner Loop built presumably by the State as part of its modernization and urban renewal scheme for downtown. Needless to say in the long term it proved to be a vector of blight, as you can see in the video _Rochester: City of Poverty,_ a parody of the 1963 promotional film _Rochester: City of Quality._ Both are on TH-cam. 😊
Todd… Totally unrelated to this video, but I recall you saying during the “All Request” video last year that you don’t plan on doing a video of the I-270 beltway around Columbus, OH. Why not? Good chance that I’m in the minority here, but I enjoy videos of the 3-digit interstates more than the US highways.
No sports related reason to do it, and it's a city I haven't spent any time in. If I ever go to Columbus that could change but I just don't really have anything to say about 270.
@@ControlCityFreak You did a road trip out west in 2024. How about a road trip to the Eastern US along I-70 in 2025? Get some video footage of New Stanton and Breezewood!
Citifield would be Exit 22A
3:02 *ends a whole lotta careers* ☠️
As a Ravens supporter (especially Lamar Jackson), I felt bad for the Ravens for being eliminated after playing against the Buffalo Bills. Now, it's official for the Chiefs to play against the Bills and I'll say the Chiefs need to keep the title and become back-to-back champions.
Bergen = "burr-jun" & Chili Center = "chie-lie" not "chilly".
You can always do ON-401 for a Buffalo game in the future
4:35 .... I-90 in NY and I-80 in CA ..... the only instances where all nine numerical spur routes are used.
So I know you’re out of short Buffalo roads, but if you ever need a long one besides US 62, US 20 almost enters it
Will do both at some point, just not for a playoff video
I have never been to Rochester but knew a lot about the place while growing up in Ottawa because our cable operators picked up American TV networks' affiliates from Rochester. I would have mispronounced Chili if it weren't for those TV stations. So thank you Channels 8, 10, and 13, especially Channel 13 who used to have the Nothnagle Gallery of Fine Homes TV Showcase every Sunday morning before Funtime Junior Bowling (from their in-house bowling alley) in the mid-1980's.
Is it true that Brighton is one of the nicest burbs of Rochester?
What's your YT Video upload schedule going to look like after the Super Bowl Todd in terms of which highways you plan on covering?
Check the community tab or the video description, I always update the schedule there
I believe there used to be rest areas along 490 west of Rochester but considering how close they were to the city which resulted in them not seeing much use, they ended up being converted to truck inspection stations.
HOW DID I NOT HEAR ABOUT THIS?! You went right by my house without a shoutout 😢
Short turnaround for this one, didn’t know for sure what it would be until after Bills-Ravens
Believe it or not, Chili is pronounced "Chie-lie" in western New York. I know. It's weird. I've lived my whole life in Buffalo except for 5 years in Rochester and I've never been able to figure out why. Also Charlotte is pronounced Shar Lot.
I’m not 100% sure, but I believe Charlotte, MI is pronounced the same way.
2:10 LeRoy, the birthplace of Jell-o.
ok 590 and 390 at some point also rochester is a great place in the summer don't come in winter unless you like the cold
I'm aware that you're not from Rochester, so you get a pass, but the town of Chili is pronounced like Chai Lie When you are driving on 590 Northbound approaching the 490 interchange, there is signage for the pull thru lanes for the town of Irondequoit (the major north suburb of Rochester, and also where I'm from!) I was a bit disappointed you didn't mention this. That building (tower) that you thought was interesting... I'm fairly certain that's the Monroe County Prison... Just funny to me. In terms of the East Bound 490 being signed for Victor, Victor has developed into a major suburb of Rochester and a center for commercial activity (with the earlier mentioned Mall coming off of 90 being the Eastview Mall, the largest and most sophisticated mall in the area), so it's likely that many vehicles would be wanting to get there. Also, if you ever do come to Rochester, you HAVE to try a garbage plate. It's our specialty here. I've heard many people describe them as "I hate that I love it so much." Do with that what you will.
Thanks for the info! Yeah would definitely try that if I make it there.
Not the prison - its the Times Square building. The 'wings' on top are an art installation from the 1930's called 'Wings of Progress'
@drivingaroundtheworld1 I might have been looking at the wrong building in the image lmao
11:45 Todd! MaineDOT currently closed it! Went on a ski trip and was getting off at that exit anyway so I planned to take that hotel ramp onto the main road, all closed off! Looking at google maps after, it even looks like they’re building a little toll booth there! Agh MaineDOT - made sure to get a paper map from the cash toll every time to get my moneys worth.
how much would it be for you to shout out a gofundme?
It depends on what it is
@@ControlCityFreak it's a gofundme for a friend of a friend. He has brain cancer and had a stroke and it's really hurting the family financially.
I regularly drive the 95 between Boulder City and Vidal Junction in the wee hours of the morning on the way to Chuckwalla Valley Raceway. I especially enjoy the winding mountainous area. I think Boulder City is a sensible control city, it has the Hoover Dam and is a decent size town
Ughhh, sequential exit numbering… 490 East should be signed for Syracuse instead of Albany. Syracuse has a larger population and I’m sure the Bills fans living in Rochester also root for SU in football and basketball. (Also, my Dad is an SU alum. Go Orange!)
Albany's metro is far larger though. I believe the Albany area's town of Colonie has more people than Syracuse too.
I think they go Albany because, like Rochester, I-90 doesn't actually go into Syracuse. Plus Albany is the big split for the Thruway. Also, I'm forever salty about 2003 so I'd never vouch for Syracuse lol
@@ControlCityFreak as a Syracuse native, I am kind of salty about Syracuse not being a control city, especially considering that it meets 81 there. 😛 The Thruway always was kind of weird with what they sign and they always seem to be at odds with NYSDOT. The Thruway will always list secondary and long distance cities for their exits but no mention of them once you get onto the NYSDOT roads. It's maddening sometimes. And for the longest time, the control cities were only Buffalo and NYC. Hell, Buffalo and NYC still get primary control city status on the mileage signs. Albany didn't get added until fairly recently. Fun fact, the Syracuse area has the highest number of exits along the Thruway outside of the NYC and Buffalo areas. And finally, I remember reading that the Thruway was originally supposed to be routed much closer to the city of Rochester but local politicians there angered state officials and the route was pushed much further south. Nowadays, it's not considered far but back then, before suburban sprawl and fuel efficient vehicles, it was considered pretty far.
MINNIE THE MOOCHER BY CAB CALLOWAY!!!
Chy Lie not Chilly
If Ohio was to revive the I-290 numbered route, i think it could work as a beltway around Sandusky(with a bridge near the mouth of Sandusky bay). Maybe it's just me, but I think it can work, that way, if people wanted to go to Kelley's Island, Put-in-Bay, or Ontario(as in the Canadian province), they could use 290 to avoid the OH Tpk tolls.
Neither Frederick Douglass nor Susan B Anthony are from Rochester, but both are buried there. Anthony lived at Rochester at the time of her death with her sister.
It’s pronounced Chai-Lie, not Chile. The stadiums sign refers to the Amerk’s and Knighthawk’s Blue Cross Arena as well as the Red Wing’s Innovative field. Fishers refers to St John Fisher college.
Not quite. St. John Fisher College is along side 490 by the Fairport Rd, area. Fishers, out by Exit 45, Victor, and Eastview Mall is a town in Ontario County.
390 South will bring you into I-86
Brockport has a SUNY Campus
I knew someone who lived in Rochester for a couple years, they worked for Kodak, and they called it, "Rottenchester."
6:00 this is signed really bad. Whenever I go watch the Rochester Americans, minor league hockey team, I always take the inner loop. The one time I tried taking exit 12, I got lost. The inner loop exit is closer to both the minor league hockey arena and the minor league ballpark.
I don't know if I agree with east bound, that it should be Albany. Syracuse is a big city for upstate NY and it's weird to ignore it completely. And if you are going to shoot way down the road, then let it be Boston. They don't ignore Buffalo going west for Cleveland or something like that
I can see the Thruway doing Albany but I think local traffic should be Buffalo/Rochester/Syracuse
I think Rochester is the snowiest city in the USA
Its either Rochester or Buffalo.
@@dvferyanceSyracuse usually gets the snowiest city crown. But Rochester and Buffalo are usually 2nd and 3rd respectfully.
@@Handle_Needs_3_Or_More_Charact Syracuse isn't on a lake.
@@dvferyance it doesn't need to be on the lake. Plus, Syracuse is southeast of the lake, which results in them being in the perfect spot to get the highest amount of lake effect snow totals due to prevailing winds historically coming from the northwest to the west.
6:00 - At least one of the "Stadiums" being referred to is the one where the Rochester Americans play. They're the minor-league affiliate for the Buffalo Sabres.
Also for the Rochester Red Wings Triple A baseball team
Yeah! I'm in Chili! Which I pronounced like the food, because I'm from the pacific northwest originally! LOVE the Rochester area! GO BILLS!
Ew car dependency, the soot from the highway usage gets on and in the few apartment buildings windows.
IMHO, after Rochester, the eastbound signs should either say Syracuse and Albany or alternate between the two cities.
Maybe Syracuse??
Hopefully you do I 390 someday.
I think chili is actually pronounced chyly..
One of the possible origins for the name I read in a brief history of Chili, German Dutch from Pennsylvania settled southern part of the town, named it Chili after the Deutsch word for 1000 = Chil rhyme with smile, because they believed the savior will have a second coming right here and rule for a 1000 years of peace, just something I read.
It is pronounced CHI-lie.
