Used to take this road all the time for railfanning the Norfolk Southern Cleveland Sub, the CSX Erie West Sub, the CSX Waterfront Sub, and my attempts of the CSX CL&W Sub and never getting any catches lol
I’m a NE Ohio native (from Euclid) and I can provide some context to that 271/480 split. I have family that lives in Oakwood Village and drove 271 quite a bit. That stretch where 480 is concurrent is one of the more congested areas of suburban Cleveland so much that 271 SB was congested all the way prior to the US 422/I-480N interchange. So that project was done to add needed travel lanes and to help with weaving at the SR 14 interchange and throughout the concurrency itself. The project also added three continuous lanes between the US 422 interchange and I-480 which also played into that congestion. Also the express lanes do have limited exits though they are generally grouped together. Before you enter the lanes there is signage telling you where the next exit is on the express lanes.
I remember going up this way to visit my grandmother in Akron. I think it's interesting that you can take OH 8 to get to 271 (if I remember correctly, it merged on around Northfield). Northbound, it was signed Cuyahoga Falls, but southbound, Boston Heights I think.
I love 271, those express lanes make for a much more relaxing drive out to the eastern lakeshore. Too bad it doesn’t extend to the west side suburbs to make a half ring around Cleveland, but there’s I-480/ I-80 for that I suppose.
6:17 I-385 in Greenville starts out pretty rural, and then when you get to Exit 24 it becomes a 3 lane Highway and continues like that until its terminus in Downtown Greenville.
Well I had a comment about US 322 typed up but I guess TH-cam decided it was "self promotion" and deleted it, because that's a thing that happens apparently. Thanks for showing it both ways!
Once upon a time, I-80 and I-480 were labeled the other way around so 80 overlayed 271. The Ohio Turnpike requested the number swap as they figured that more people would stay on the paid road if it kept the same number
Did this road a billion times. Pre-covid this road was a nightmare. Luckily they made a lot of improvements near Bedford so it's way smoother. Progressive and Penske along with a whole bunch of other industrial parks are based in the east end of cleveland so 271 is a massive commuter highway coming from Medina/Brecksville/Richfield/Hudson/Akron/Macedonia so this road gets huge amounts of traffic I kind of wish they signed akron for 271 south in the concurrency til route 8 but thats just me
Been driving 271 much of my life. The express Lane portion can get horrendously busy during rush hour, especially the area heading south where the express lanes end before meeting 480. The massive concurrency messes with GPSs which seems to forget that 480 exist (even when you are on 480). Both south and northbound 271 have an interesting opportunity with this concurrency where you can exit 271 just to get back to it a couple of miles later.
According to Google Maps, 271 is a key part of one of the major routes from Boston to Los Angeles and vice versa. This route, albeit slower, consists of 90 to 271 to 71 to 270 to 70 to 44 to 40 to 15 to 210. The other faster route is 90 to 80 to 76 to 70 to 15 to 210. I think the reason the 71 70 40 route would be used is because it has fewer tolls than the 90 80 70 route? I dunno.
@@ControlCityFreak One could take the 271 route and follow 70 all the way to it's west end, bypassing the Borman while also getting the splendor of 70 and 15 west of Denver.
Also don't forget the Cleveland Barons which ultimately became (depending on perspective) the Dallas Stars or arguably (by ownership continuity) the San Jose Sharks.
I would add in that maybe Ohio could do dual signage during the 271/480 currency on its East/Southbound side which would mean Columbus/Youngstown. But outside of that, what Ohio DOT signs is exactly the way they should be doing it.
Man, I haven't been on 271 in a while. But, I'm glad they've made changes to make it better. But, signage, oh boy, they didn't just knock it out of the park, they took a Louisville Slugger and annihilated it. Well done, Ohio!
Good video. I have a lot of friends here in Cincinnati who take I-271 regularly to travel between here and upstate New York. Also one of my high school buddies lives in North Royalton.
It was a kinda random choice for me based on the Royals playing Cleveland, but it did end up being a pretty interesting and quirky road and I’m glad I covered it.
I'm in a trade union and The Ohio Turnpike actually does mark the change from Akron (wage) rate and Cleveland rate (i.e. any job north of I-80 in Summit and Portage county pays more per hour). Although they are part of Summit County, most people think of Macedonia and Northfield as Cleveland suburbs either way.
The way they did the 271/480 concurrency seems confusing but it's actually way safer now. Taking 271N to get off at the Broadway/Forbes exit used to require merging across like 4 lanes of traffic in like a 1/4 mile to get over to the exit lane. Now you just stay in the right lane and don't have to merge at all.
I have to agree to sign Erie, PA heading north and Columbus, OH heading south. Also, I-271 links 3 counties of Greater Cleveland and 1 county in Greater Akron, aka Summit County, OH.
I’d say Erie and Columbus are the best choices, but I’m kind of bummed that there aren’t many good localized choices within the Akron and Cleveland areas to choose from as well. I guess the closest ones to their termini, namely Mentor and Medina would suffice. Seeing as Cleveland is triple the size of Akron (2.1M versus 700k metros), I was really surprised when I found out there were a surprising amount of big name acts from Akron, especially compared to Cleveland. From Akron (Portage and Summit Counties), I gathered David Allan Coe, Chrissie Hynde (from The Pretenders), The Black Keys, James Ingram and DEVO. As for acts from Cleveland (Geauga, Ashtabula, Medina, Lake, Lorain and Cuyahoga), there’s Tracy Chapman, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Bone Thugs N Harmony and Krazy Bone, Kid Cudi, Machine Gun Kelly, Nine Inch Nails, James Gang, and Dead Boys. As always, I’m never going to be able to list all local acts, so chime in your own that should also be considered well known. I’m getting ready for a long counterclockwise road trip around the country after the 4th next week. It’ll follow (not including the two hours needed to get to and from the ‘start’ and ‘end’ of the loop in Sacramento) 5S-8E-10E-75S-4S-95N-93N-91S-90W-75N-94E-69S-94E-90W-94W-43N-41S-94W-90W-5S. I’ll document what are listed on interchange overheads and mileage signs, so we’ll get to see how bad some popular punching bags (i.e. New Mexico, Louisiana, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Oregon) really are as of July 2024…
yea i think the only time medina comes up on anything is the I-71 exit for SR 3 after the 303 exit........and hinckley gets signed twice (which i get but.......really? more times than medina?)
Also I believe Akron was a southbound control city. North bound Eastern Suburbs. If you want to get familiar with the Cleveland Suburbs pick up a Michael Stanley Album. The live album one of the greatest covers of all time.
@CrystalClearWith8BE now it just ends at the Commie... Oops, not trying to bring politics here, watched the debate tonight... it just goes to the California / Nevada border right?
@kosjeyr It ends at U.S. Route 395 in Bishop, about an hour past the border with Commie-I mean, California. U.S. 395 is one that needs to be covered; not only does it serve my hometown, but it’s also quite stunning along the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada mountains.
I 271 works better with it's parent I 71 and I 77 . I was up in Pennsylvania in April it is easier to go through Cleveland on I 90 than I 271 and connecting up with the Ohio Turnpike ( I 80) Coming from Erie ( North East) and going to Indiana and Michigan. It was around noon time and traffic flowed. Remember using I 271 in early trips to Florida before I 79 was finished in the Pittsburgh area and most of West Virginia. And staying on 90 saves on tolls on 80. It took about a week week for the tolls to show up on the sunpass. Where as the New York Thruway and West Virginia was within 24 hours . I know the Royals play the Rays next week. I know you promised I 275 Tampa/ St Petersburg eventually. Take care Todd.
@SonicandHighwayDude401 I love how people seem to forget or just have no idea that people like us exist lol Although ngl I will be intrigued to see his thoughts on the route whenever the time comes
I’ve driven from Cleveland to Rochester many times. The current signs pointing to Erie and then Buffalo and then Albany work well for me. I don’t think it would be particularly helpful to have extra signs for Buffalo when I’m still in Ohio.

If I recall correctly from my college days, anything from 2 to 11 in Ohio is a major highway, and often a freeway for some of its length.
Richfield, where the old coliseum used to be located. Now it's just forest regrowth on the old coliseum site.
I remember going up this way to visit my grandmother in Akron. I think it's interesting that you can take OH 8 to get to 271 (if I remember correctly, it merged on around Northfield). Northbound, it was signed Cuyahoga Falls, but southbound, Boston Heights I think.

And finally, it's crazy how close the Cleveland and Akron metropolitan areas are to each other.
I just consider all of NE Ohio as one metro area.
6:17 I-385 in Greenville starts out pretty rural, and then when you get to Exit 24 it becomes a 3 lane Highway and continues like that until its terminus in Downtown Greenville.
I think better access to I-77 and I-80 is needed but with the national park being right there it would be hard to construct.
Well I had a comment about US 322 typed up but I guess TH-cam decided it was "self promotion" and deleted it, because that's a thing that happens apparently. Thanks for showing it both ways!
The freeway I grew up to know and love! They built the express lanes when I was in elementary school. Wilson Mills exit represent!

My interstate hero! Have you heard of Lecompton Kansas? My friend loves a bar there
Driven through it many times.
I take that, going South-Bound to my one aunt's house in Lodi, OH.!
Glad you mentioned Richfield Coliseum
The Cleveland Barons are one my favorite defunct hockey teams

I-271 is super busy just outside Cleveland so those express lanes are very much warranted.

The 271 route avoids the Borman so that's a win, but the other route is more interesting overall since the entirety of Denver to LA is a banger.
@@ControlCityFreak Amen to that. Scenery on 70 and 15 is just legendary and hard to pass up.

Oh, and 271 was a total nightmare before they built the separate lanes for 271 and 480.

I have been on 271 before. I drove on it in 2019 coming from Buffalo to go to my cousins house in Pickerington.
I would add in that maybe Ohio could do dual signage during the 271/480 currency on its East/Southbound side which would mean Columbus/Youngstown.
But outside of that, what Ohio DOT signs is exactly the way they should be doing it.
I’m excited about you doing the beltway in NYC next week!!
I use i271 many times as a trucker to avoid Cleveland traffic....
It looks like a pretty good bypass

Yeah great signage on this road! I've only been on it once, and just on the 480 concurrency like 20 years ago

Thanks!
271 much like Hwy 401 through Toronto. Great improvement over what it used to be
13:00 - Is I-80 / Ohio Turnpike the oldest I-route road of all 'freeways' mentioned in this Yt video?
This is a very interesting three digit interstate. I thought I explored it on google maps one time but I guess not because nothing looks familiar
It was a kinda random choice for me based on the Royals playing Cleveland, but it did end up being a pretty interesting and quirky road and I’m glad I covered it.
Todd forgot: all roads lead to Limon 😆
Exit 12 for Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Not much signage, though.
