At 34:30, the "Little Arch" in Vandalia IL used to be part of the sign for a Travel Lodge motel that was located right there. The motel changed brands many years ago and so is no longer a Travel Lodge, so the sign was torn down, but they left the arch. In the '70s, visiting my grandparents in Vandalia, I used to ride with my grandfather every day from their house a couple of miles outside town to this Travel Lodge to get that day's edition of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, because Vandalia was too far out for home delivery to be offered.

12:00 I found out years ago that in MD the former alignments of US 40 are signed as MD 144 only to the west of Baltimore. East of the city, they're all signed MD 7.
they old parts are also scenic 40 and alt 40 in western md. also old frederick rd in western county is actually newer than the other frederick road that was actually the national road

Been waiting for this one for a long time. US-40 goes right through the area I grew up, in that St. Clairsville/Wheeling area, and it and I-70 started my fascination with roads. Growing up in a small town I always thought it was so cool to have these extremely important roads travel right through home and go all the way across the country. I always was curious about where they would take me to and where they would eventually end. Really enjoyed this video.
i was just on us 40 yesturday after a 8 HOUR BUS RIDE ON GREYHOUND half the ride was on us 40 after we left wilmington from new york to dc which is supposed to be 4 hours but the bus decided we will stop in at 8 random places that nobody got off
I've never done the Hound. Is Megabus in Wilmington? I've taken that from Baltimore to NY a few times and it doesn't make any stops other than a rest stop in NJ.

40 actually reunites with I-70 there while intertwined with US-287. Maybe someday he'll spend a few weeks doing each highway that runs through there, including US-24, Colorado 71, etc.
I remember the roads connecting May's landing to the del membr very well; when we were poor college students coming home on thxgiving, that's how you can get north in NJ from the bridge without paying for the Turnpike
The most I've ever probably driven on the US40 is probably between Cumberland Maryland to little bit past of Frederick Maryland. But Hagerstown, it's pretty cool to drop through that. I live not that far away from Hagerstown like 40 minutes away. From winchester virginia US40 is a split road through downtown Hagerstown. Then when they're going East towards Frederick. Maryland it is called the dual highway. But that was a pretty cool video I enjoyed it.

This is the divider that breaks Indiana into four more-or-less equal sections. US 31 is also an interesting road that starts at the Straits of Mackinac and ends on the Gulf Coast near Mobile, Alabama. My father, a hillbilly from Kentucky, said, "The Three R's in Kentucky are readin', writin' and Route 31 to Indianapolis." Oh how true that was!

Atlantic City-Vineland-Wilmington-Elkton-Aberdeen-Baltimore-Catonsville-Ellicott City-Frederick-Hagerstown-Hancock-Cumberland-Grantsville-Uniontown-California-Washington-Wheeling-St. Clairsville-Morristown-Old Washington-Cambridge-New Concord-Zanesville-Columbus-Springfield-Vandalia-Richmond-Cambridge City-Knightstown-Greenfield-Indianapolis-Brazil-Terre Haute-Marshall-Casey-Effingham-Vandalia-Greenville-Highland-Troy-Collinsville-East St. Louis-St. Louis-Chesterfield-Wentzville-Warrenton-Columbia-Boonville-Kansas City Reno used to be on Hwy 40 until it was truncated in Utah like you said at the beginning. But it is still very much well known in my hometown; my navigator actually recognizes part of 4th Street west of downtown as Old U.S. 40, even complete with the shield. Outside of an irrational hatred for Mizzou, I can’t understand why you don’t like Columbia. It is very much a big city, and I even say that it’s far enough away from both Kansas City and St. Louis (roughly 100 miles from both) that it could very justifiably be a primary control on I 70. As a side note, the central part of Missouri (greater Columbia area) is home to one of my favorite country music artists, even if she’ll never have the success she had in the late 90’s and mid 00’s.
When you mentioned US 322 I knew I had heard that from somewhere but I haven’t spent a lot of time in South Jersey so I knew it was something else so after a quick Google search I learned that US 322 is the road that you get off of I 80 to get on I 99 in Bellefonte Pennsylvania. That was a fun little moment for me.
At one point I counted which interstate/us highway pairs intersect the most. I can’t find it now but I believe I-70/US-40 was the most, followed by I-95/US-1 and (surprisingly) I-91/US-5 in 2nd and 3rd
Cool to see US 40. I am most familiar with the section from the US219-I68 interchange to Wheeling, WV going through Nemacolin Woodlands, by Ohiopyle and Fort Necessity, down Mount Summit through Uniontown, past Brownsville and Washington, PA.
I live in Vandalia (pronounced Van-day-lia) and grew up in Englewood/Clayton so 40 has always been one of my regular routes, especially if I'm avoiding I-70. It actually isn't going around the golf course but around Taylorsville Metropark and Taylorsville Dam on the Great Miami River. On the other side of the airport you meet Englewood Metropark and Englewood Dam on the Stillwater River. They're there because of the great flood of Dayton in 1913.
In East Columbus the other highways like 33 are just all over the place, Broke down in the rough SE part of Columbus (Obetz). I think US 33 is concurrent with part of I 270 for a bit there. There is another road that runs parallel to US 40 called Refugee that eventually crosses to the other side once in Columbus, it's all messed up.
5:17 there's a bad sign in Hamilton, Ohio with US. 127. They did some road work in Hamilton on 127 several years ago and they replaced the whited shield US. 127 sign with an Ohio State Route 127 sign. OH. 127 doesn't actually exist. 😂
It's signed Camden because the road is know as the Black Horse Pike which actually goes to Camden. US 40 separates from the Black Horse at Mays Landing & US 322 at Williamstown. The name pre-dates the numbering system like the Lincoln Highway. Mays Landing is the seat of government for Atlantic County (part of the large Hamilton Township) It's pronounced Byou-na.
Another great video! I've driven both east and west stretches through Indiana multiple times. I didn't realize they took US 40 off Washington Street. Probably better off as it gets very congested and there is a lot of work to make the public transit system better. Been to Casey, IL many times and have seen most of the largest stuff there. Very interesting for sure. I feel like US 40 is a good road tripping opportunity to see some lesser known areas of some of the metros that I-70 runs near.
To avoid the tolls in Delaware and Maryland, I took US 40 as soon as I got into Delaware, the took 40 to I-695 outer loop, then took I-95 on the other side of Baltimore, all the way down to Florida. Wow! I drove this stretch of US 40 (twice), and overlooked that stone marker!
The only way to fix Baltimore is to level it and start over. I-70 did not destroy Columbus, Indianapolis, St. Louis or Kansas City. Hell, I-70 was built next to my greatgrandfather's house and there is an interchange in the midst of Point State Park in Pittsburgh.
Apparently US 40 shared the nickname 'Main Street of America' with fellow Route 66. But if you combine the two (where they meet in St. Louis), you could make a 'Broadway of America' route, as these two together constituted the main driving route between NYC and LA prior to the creation of the Interstate Highway System.
Ah, Zanesville. That was the approximate halfway point back when I used to drive from Reading, PA to Champaign, IL a couple of times per year. To give a clue how long ago that was, I knew it was the halfway point because the AAA TripTik told me so.

I enjoyed your US 40 video. I drove on US 40 in Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. I know talking about and criticizing control cities is your jam, but when you do videos about US routes either hugging the interstate or sharing pavement with it, I think you should state an argument on why a route like US 40 should even still exist, especially from Ohio to western Missouri, and why US 66 had to disappear. US 40 shields were removed in Nevada and California to make I-80 the lone route. Examples of interstate hugging US highways: US 51, US 31, US 301, and US 1. I'm sure certain parts of US 40, along I-70, are busy with decent traffic volumes, but should 40 be co-signed with 70, in Missouri, in the year 2024. It would be a topic worth commenting on when considering retiring a US route regardless of how iconic it might be.
40 has pretty long independent sections in Utah, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey and is a useful secondary road in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. 66 had very few truly independent sections left. I think US 99 had a better case for not being decommissioned than 66 did, but CA hates US highways. A lot of 80 in CA, NV, and UT was literally built on top of 40.
The duplex is probably a remnant of the "Lakes to Sea Highway" of which US 322 is the main component. Totally not needed now but old duplexes die hard.
Casey is pronounced “K-Z” Vandalia is pronounced “Van-Dale-ya” Sandoval is pronounced “San-doe-vul. This was such a great video and I really enjoyed it!!! Highly recommend taking US 40 instead of I 70 from Indianapolis to St. Louis. It is a much more peaceful and pleasant highway. .

Interesting fact...PA 51 goes through Pittsburgh and to the Ohio line, where it becomes OH14 and ends at Public Square. California, PA is home to a state university, hence the sign. Eventually, PA43 will go to Pittsburgh as the Mon Fayette Expressway.
I really do think that I 70 should be signed for Washington PA going west from Wheeling. I can’t imagine any other control city for that route in that direction at that point because Pittsburgh doesn’t make sense cause not everyone’s going to Pittsburgh. The turnpike is kind of a through route I feel as though more people are going to meet with the turnpike in new Stanton than are going to Pittsburgh and I don’t like new Stanton as a control city Washington Baltimore doesn’t make sense because if I was going east on the turnpike, I could be going to Philadelphia or New York City or in my case Connecticut, so I like Washington because it’s a pretty big spot compared to the other cities pass through between Columbus and Harrisburg, so yeah, I support Washington PA
Not everyone is going to Pittsburgh, but I'm sure a whole lot more people are heading from Columbus, Cincy, Indy, really anywhere west or southwest to Pittsburgh than are heading to Washington. Add in the fact that there's a much, much more famous Washington elsewhere, making Washington PA more confusing than helpful for many.
Fun fact: I-70 control city west of Columbus was Indianapolis until about 20 years ago. I-70 barely touched Dayton proper and is way north of downtown Dayton. Growth of Dayton to the north and simple logic that Dayton is the next big city got it changed by ODOT.
I remember that, as recently as the late 1980s, road signs in Indiana along I-70 listed the Eastbound control city as “Columbus O.” At some point around 1990, INDOT started changing the signs to “Columbus OH.” 35 years later, I still sometimes refer to Columbus, Ohio verbally as “Columbus O,” in honor of those old signs.
They should extend I-76 East of Philly to Atlantic City, and while in the 76 topic, it wouldn't hurt Ohio to continuing 76 west of 71. But merge it with 71 South and then follow US. 30 in Ashland and follow it to Fort Wayne, IN. and end it in Fort Wayne.

I think US 61 deserves a mention in most iconic US Routes, but maybe I'm biased.
It's good, but as a N-S road it doesn't get the same kind of scope. Even amongst N-S roads, I-55 is no I-95

Cool to see US 40. I am most familiar with the section from the US219-I68 interchange to Wheeling, WV going through Nemacolin Woodlands, by Ohiopyle and Fort Necessity, down Mount Summit through Uniontown, past Brownsville and Washington, PA.

I live in Vandalia (pronounced Van-day-lia) and grew up in Englewood/Clayton so 40 has always been one of my regular routes, especially if I'm avoiding I-70. It actually isn't going around the golf course but around Taylorsville Metropark and Taylorsville Dam on the Great Miami River. On the other side of the airport you meet Englewood Metropark and Englewood Dam on the Stillwater River. They're there because of the great flood of Dayton in 1913.

In East Columbus the other highways like 33 are just all over the place, Broke down in the rough SE part of Columbus (Obetz). I think US 33 is concurrent with part of I 270 for a bit there.
There is another road that runs parallel to US 40 called Refugee that eventually crosses to the other side once in Columbus, it's all messed up.
5:17 there's a bad sign in Hamilton, Ohio with US. 127. They did some road work in Hamilton on 127 several years ago and they replaced the whited shield US. 127 sign with an Ohio State Route 127 sign. OH. 127 doesn't actually exist. 😂

It's signed Camden because the road is know as the Black Horse Pike which actually goes to Camden. US 40 separates from the Black Horse at Mays Landing & US 322 at Williamstown. The name pre-dates the numbering system like the Lincoln Highway. Mays Landing is the seat of government for Atlantic County (part of the large Hamilton Township) It's pronounced Byou-na.

My family is all from Chicago but I grew up in Lawrence. Had season tickets throughout the 90s, so I got to attend a total of one home playoff wins.

I didn't realize they took US 40 off Washington Street. Probably better off as it gets very congested and there is a lot of work to make the public transit system better.
Been to Casey, IL many times and have seen most of the largest stuff there. Very interesting for sure.

To avoid the tolls in Delaware and Maryland, I took US 40 as soon as I got into Delaware, the took 40 to I-695 outer loop, then took I-95 on the other side of Baltimore, all the way down to Florida. Wow! I drove this stretch of US 40 (twice), and overlooked that stone marker!
The only way to fix Baltimore is to level it and start over. I-70 did not destroy Columbus, Indianapolis, St. Louis or Kansas City. Hell, I-70 was built next to my greatgrandfather's house and there is an interchange in the midst of Point State Park in Pittsburgh.
Level the unofficial end at the park and ride and just sign I-695 East as I-70 to I-95 if they aren’t going to have it be built to I-95 in any way
I-70's urban sections absolutely made neighborhoods in Kansas City, Indy, and Columbus worse and leveled a whole lot of homes and businesses.
Not to argue with you, but American cities have been falling apart since before the Interstate system started.

US 40 goes through not one, but TWO different Vandalias along the route.
Apparently US 40 shared the nickname 'Main Street of America' with fellow Route 66. But if you combine the two (where they meet in St. Louis), you could make a 'Broadway of America' route, as these two together constituted the main driving route between NYC and LA prior to the creation of the Interstate Highway System.
Almost like 40 is there for when there's an incident on I-70 requiring a detour. (Kind of like 301 was for I-95 if memory serves.)

Ah, Zanesville. That was the approximate halfway point back when I used to drive from Reading, PA to Champaign, IL a couple of times per year. To give a clue how long ago that was, I knew it was the halfway point because the AAA TripTik told me so.

While following along the journey on google maps, I spied a covered bridge just off of US 40 on the edge of Greenup.
In Vandalia Ohio, It's not just a golf course, it is a dam that you drive over for flood control.
I forgot about the dam. I remembered the beautiful metro park around there. I'm from Germantown, so we also have a beautiful dam also.

I enjoyed your US 40 video. I drove on US 40 in Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. I know talking about and criticizing control cities is your jam, but when you do videos about US routes either hugging the interstate or sharing pavement with it, I think you should state an argument on why a route like US 40 should even still exist, especially from Ohio to western Missouri, and why US 66 had to disappear. US 40 shields were removed in Nevada and California to make I-80 the lone route. Examples of interstate hugging US highways: US 51, US 31, US 301, and US 1. I'm sure certain parts of US 40, along I-70, are busy with decent traffic volumes, but should 40 be co-signed with 70, in Missouri, in the year 2024. It would be a topic worth commenting on when considering retiring a US route regardless of how iconic it might be.
40 has pretty long independent sections in Utah, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey and is a useful secondary road in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. 66 had very few truly independent sections left. I think US 99 had a better case for not being decommissioned than 66 did, but CA hates US highways. A lot of 80 in CA, NV, and UT was literally built on top of 40.
The duplex is probably a remnant of the "Lakes to Sea Highway" of which US 322 is the main component. Totally not needed now but old duplexes die hard.

You don't really show how that area from Zanesville to just before Reynoldsburg is just cornfields on US 40 and how old and colonial that area is up to Granville and Newark
Interesting fact...PA 51 goes through Pittsburgh and to the Ohio line, where it becomes OH14 and ends at Public Square.
California, PA is home to a state university, hence the sign.
Eventually, PA43 will go to Pittsburgh as the Mon Fayette Expressway.
That Interstate 170 project is a crazy story, and it worse if they never actually finished it.

I really do think that I 70 should be signed for Washington PA going west from Wheeling. I can’t imagine any other control city for that route in that direction at that point because Pittsburgh doesn’t make sense cause not everyone’s going to Pittsburgh. The turnpike is kind of a through route I feel as though more people are going to meet with the turnpike in new Stanton than are going to Pittsburgh and I don’t like new Stanton as a control city Washington Baltimore doesn’t make sense because if I was going east on the turnpike, I could be going to Philadelphia or New York City or in my case Connecticut, so I like Washington because it’s a pretty big spot compared to the other cities pass through between Columbus and Harrisburg, so yeah, I support Washington PA
Not everyone is going to Pittsburgh, but I'm sure a whole lot more people are heading from Columbus, Cincy, Indy, really anywhere west or southwest to Pittsburgh than are heading to Washington. Add in the fact that there's a much, much more famous Washington elsewhere, making Washington PA more confusing than helpful for many.
219 does not go to Morgantown. 119 does.
Fun fact: I-70 control city west of Columbus was Indianapolis until about 20 years ago. I-70 barely touched Dayton proper and is way north of downtown Dayton. Growth of Dayton to the north and simple logic that Dayton is the next big city got it changed by ODOT.
I remember that, as recently as the late 1980s, road signs in Indiana along I-70 listed the Eastbound control city as “Columbus O.” At some point around 1990, INDOT started changing the signs to “Columbus OH.”
35 years later, I still sometimes refer to Columbus, Ohio verbally as “Columbus O,” in honor of those old signs.

They should extend I-76 East of Philly to Atlantic City, and while in the 76 topic, it wouldn't hurt Ohio to continuing 76 west of 71. But merge it with 71 South and then follow US. 30 in Ashland and follow it to Fort Wayne, IN. and end it in Fort Wayne.
