4:05 I initially wondered why Brooklyn’s minor-league team was called the “Cyclones”, as NYC isn’t thought of as being in “Tornado Alley” - but when I see the name of the roller coaster, the name of the team makes sense now!
been stuck on the traffic on the belt for so many hours of my life its crazy, plus just yesterday my friend got in an accident on the on ramp to the belt at exit 1 eastbound while I was in the car
I've been on the Belt Parkway multiple times to get from I-278 to JFK. The fact that there's an exit for the Belt Parkway on both decks of the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge is very helpful. Otherwise, the only nice thing I have to say is that the water views on the BP itself help you stay calm when you're in the middle of traffic no matter what time of day it is and you're trying to catch a flight.
Before my cousins moved from Staten Island to Nassau County, spent a lot of time on the Belt when we would go to visit them, so this brought back a few memories....
Fun Fact, NY-878, the Nassau Expressway, is actually I-878. It is only an Official Interstate in the East bound direction coming off the Belt for about a mile. It is unsigned but it is in the official records as the shortest Interstate. It is up to standards from the Belt Parkway to Rockaway Boulevard only.
This is a pretty cool road, with nice views of the VN Bridge, some nice overpasses, and of course even a nice view of the Manhattan skyline. Good video, Todd!!! Happy 4th of July, and as always, keep on trucking! :) 👍
Other than a few pronunciation errors this was a good video. I'm originally from Long Island and spent many hours driving on the Belt Parkway, mainly going to work in Coney Island from Cropsey Avenue to Surf Avenue. I had also gone through various local streets in Brooklyn and Queens to avoid the Belt Parkway traffic jams. And yes, I've had lunch many times at the original Nathans.
My interstate hero! I'm never stopping watching your channel as you could tell on my Facebook which tells you I love you and your amazing videos and It would make my life if I could ever meet you! And happy Independence Day ( Fourth of July ) to my interstate hero 🎉
Westbound belt pkwy to JFK airport would take the JFK expressway exit. Also, the ordinal numbering with the a/b/c vs E/W/N/S, the story goes, that the a/b/c are additional exits added after the road was built. They would not re-order the ordinal exits with a new exit, but instead just add an a/b/c, so you would have an exit 26, then 26a, 26b and so on. The cardinal directions are mainly cloverleaf exits where the first ramp may be intended to go north, and then the cloverleaf under the overpass is the one going south. Note that the two can be combined, as with the interchange with 135 and the Southern State Parkway, which is exits 28 A N and 28 A S.
I remember when my grandmother drove my brother and I on the Belt then get onto the Verrazano to visit my great grandfather in Staten Island. I remember that red sign "explosives prohibited" lol. Happy 4th!
The exit numbers on the Belt Pkwy. are on the mileage system. There are gaps in exit numbers between Exits 9 (Knapp St.) thru 17 (Cross Bay Blvd.) where there are a couple of miles in between exits.
Great video! I just went to coney island yesterday and had a chance to see the belt parkway coming back (we were taking the subway (the superior form of transit in NY)). There were setting up for the hotdog eating contest all day! They blocked off the street you see between Nathans and that sugar store.
When I was in grade school in the 1980s (in Pittsburgh), we learned that the Verrazano Narrows Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world. That hasn't been true for quite some time, but for some reason I remember that fact. I have no idea why that was something we learned.
I haven't driven the entire Belt Pkwy or checked it in Google maps, but I'm expecting the N/S exits only apply when one street has separate exits for travel in each direction. If it's distinct streets/roads, they probably assign letters A, B, etc.
The belt went through a pretty significant renovation a few years ago. I just wish they made it suitable for trucks. The BQE in Brooklyn is in serious disrepair and sadly it’s only a matter of time before it collapses. That would cause a major disruption for traffic. Also thanks for including some of the cross island parkway on here. When I saw that you were doing the belt parkway I felt the belt was too short for it’s own video and that the cross island should be included.
@@DTD110865 New York has to be the nimby capital of the world. I-78 was supposed to go through lower Manhattan and Brooklyn right outside of JFK. The airport would be accessible via I-878 and I-678. For some reason, the weather app on my iPhone has New York as one of three defaults (along with the current location and Cupertino, a city 8.6 miles NW of San Jose); it looks like it’ll be a very nice Independence Day there at 84/68. Wish I could say the same for where I am in Reno; in spite of my mid-latitude location and high altitude, we’re looking at 98/60 today. We’ll see if punching bags like NM, LA, MS, NC, PA, MN and OR live up to their reputation on this channel. In the meantime, I thought I’d give a preview of what to expect, based off of what I see leaving my workplace 20 miles east of Reno 3/4 times a week, along with how I’d rate them, trying to take the overall environment into consideration. The southern state parkway is even worse especially between the belt/cross island interchange and the meadow brook parkway. It’s extremely windy, narrow, and the on ramps are really short with almost no time to build up speed and merge. Many have died on that stretch of road.
@@ErikCB912 I know of at least one exit east of Meadowbrook State Parkway that should be permanently closed (specifically Meadowbrook Road), and one that should be extended (the east to southbound ramp to NY 135).

Here’s Speedboy14’s the way it should be for NYC’s Belt Parkway Eastbound: Queens, JFK, Eastern Long Island Westbound: JFK, Brooklyn, Verrazano Narrows Bridge, Manhattan
I wouldn’t even bother with putting Queens or Brooklyn; Airport then Eastern LI eastbound, Airport then Verrazano westbound. Just putting 278 as a control destination after exit 2 is good enough since you have many options to get to other places and just ‘queens’ doesn’t make sense

They don't in Manhattan either. I first noticed it on the subway, every stop is 42 street, 34 street, etc. Just looked at 30th and 3rd Ave randomly, and the street signs are 30 St and 3 Av
