The way I've heard it, the whole 280, 680, and 880 complex are intended to form a sort of bastardized loop around the bay that, when taken as one unit, all connect back to 80 eventually. 280 would connect back to the start of 80 if 101 didn't happen to fulfill that role instead before diving right through the center of the city and continuing on to Washington. The ends of 280 and 80 come within basically 5 city blocks of each other. The changes in numbering from 680 to 280 as you go around the bay are less because they're fundamentally different routes and more so that people don't get confused by the wayfinding at the south part of the loop suddenly changing from south to north no matter which side you're on.

Thanks for including the Flintstone House. It's locally famous and a thorn in the side of Hillsborough City Council. Fun fact: a Michelin-starred celebrity chef was going to open a pop-up restaurant there but allegedly it got stopped by zoning laws.

On my way out of San Francisco in 2007, we took I-280 south on the way to the airport because we wanted to stop at the Daly City In-N-Out. It was/is also a Krispy Kreme, so when my wife and friend saw that they both exclaimed "Luther Burger!" I had earlier mentioned how the late Mr. Vandross enjoyed those sandwiches *faithfully* before his passing.

Also what's interesting is that there's a complete abandoned section visible underneath the 280/380 interchange. They planned on extending it further, thus why 380 abruptly stops at exit 5 (I-280).

This is actually a route that I’ve driven the entire length of in both directions. I’m only 4 hours away from San Francisco by car, and I prepare myself for all my summer road trips by doing loops throughout the Bay Area. Anyways, my list for this highway is actually quite simple: San Ramon-San Jose-Daly City-San Francisco.
The inclusion of Daly City, in my opinion, is necessary in both directions because it helps differentiate between this route and U.S. 101 (which would have San Mateo instead). As for the continuation as 680, I think San Ramon is a better choice than Walnut Creek, as it is bigger. I personally wouldn’t start signing Sacramento on 680 until after either Concord or the Benicia-Martinez Bridge, and I’ll tell you why.
Throughout my childhood, my family would go to the Great America amusement park (actually right next to the current 49ers stadium!). However, we’d always take a different route to return to I 80 than how we left I 80; namely, take I 580 over Altamont Pass to I 205 in Tracy, and then take I 5 through Stockton to come into Sacramento from the south. We’d take this slight detour to avoid the northbound toll on said bridge between Concord and Fairfield (it’s free southbound).

    Several comments:
    1) How come San Jose doesn't get any love. The title should be SF to SJ. San Jose is after all 20% bigger than San Francisco
    2) You missed pointing out that the TH-cam headquarters is right next to the 280/380 interchange.
    3) 280 between Cupertino and Daly City is named the Junipero Serra Freeway and is billed as the "World's Most Beautiful Freeway". One can argue whether that's true or not, but there's certainly an case for it.
    4) One of the rest areas has huge 2 or 3 story statue of Junipero Serra with a finger pointing the way forward. One of the favorite pranks is to hang a giant yo-yo from his finger.
    5) Highway 1 heading to Pacifica is the Cabrillo Highway, not the PCH. The PCH ends down in Southern California near Oxnard.
    6) I can't blame you for calling the home of the Giants Pac Bell Park. Pac Bell was it's original name and sounds much better than ATT, Oracle or what ever its called now.
    7) Taking 101 may be shorter, but the traffic is so bad it's usually faster to take 280.

280 my beloved. I moved away from SJ to Chicago 3 years ago. Drove that highway almost every day for work
The Apple campus looks like a spaceship 🪐
Also the Stanford Cardinal: they used to be the Indians then changed to the Cardinal in the 70s I think? The students voted on the Cardinal as the dark red color for their team name. I guess calling themselves the Trees would be too close to a weed reference
FWIW I worked at the Stanford campus as a youth swim coach and I can 100% confirm the elitist attitude. I coached at an Olympic level swim club for years before that job but because I didn’t go there for college I was chopped liver

The 280 along the S.F. Peninsula is a scenic route between San Francisco and San Jose and is an alternate of the Bayshore Freeway since that freeway is entire in the urban area and caused a lot of traffic, but luckily, since 2022, it gained express toll lanes which will help solve traffic along the 101 in San Mateo County. Lastly, I agree with the control cities to sign Daly City and San Jose heading south and Downtown San Jose and San Francisco heading north. Although, after meeting the 87 near Downtown San Jose, I'll sign Sacramento along the 280 between the 87 and 101 as we meet the 680 which is signed for Sacramento which is good.

Just a long-term bug of mine (and others): the tech area from Cupertino to Santa Clara is "Silicon Valley" (like the element) as it is used in semiconductors (and is the biochemical basis of the Horta of Janus VI); "Silicone" is a rubber substitute, used for seals, gaskets, coverings and (of course) breast implants.

I know I just said “Los Gatos” but I have changed my mind. 85 SB should be signed for Santa Cruz until its junction with 17.
I agree that from there it should share a control city with 101 SB. However, I don’t think that shared control city should be LA because to get there from the South Bay, 152 to 5 is preferable to staying on 101. I’m reluctant to say the right answer is Gilroy but I can’t think of anything better

I call 280, the road to CalTrain. Since the northernmost stop for CalTrain is where 280 ends. Because if you want to railfan CalTrain and the occasional Union Pacific freight coming to or from South San Francisco, to or from San Jose, then, The 280 is a better alternative to The 101, IMO.
