Finishing what we started - Lakeland 100 | Lake District | 4K | August 2024
After our DNF at Ambleside during Lakeland 💯 2024 we decided to return a fortnight later to finish what we started.
We started at Ambleside and ran the LL100 route to Coniston then made our way back to Ambleside via the Cumbria Way.
This just had to be done…

A clear dry day over the Easter weekend was a great opportunity to take on the George Fisher Tea Round again. The challenge is to summit all 10 peaks as seen from the George Fisher cafe window in Keswick. Although it was an enjoyable day out it proved to be very tough in places. Total distance was 29.7 miles with 10,881 ft of ascent in a time of 9hrs 31 mins. Summits are as follows: 1 - Catbell...

Looks a great route. Like you, I know the 3 peaks route well having done that race 4 times. I’m considering this as my second 50 miler but with more elevation than my first.
that what i was like thinking i was fall die everytime couple of mins
Definitely a tough day Andrew 👍
good decision guys. saftey should always come first. you had the guts to go out and give it a go and i'm sure having seen your other videos that you have a complete round in you. good luck on the next attempt!
Thanks so much. On reflection I think we asked a lot of ourselves. That said, if you don’t push how do you know what you are or aren’t capable of?! Not our day…
That is some effort, if you are carrying a virus, facing those conditions something is going to give. Good vid
Thank you, appreciate your comments 😊
booked on for 2025, slightly shitting it lol
sound like a fellow boltonian!
It’s a great event. It was the first time they held it this past year. It’s been changed a little for next year to include a little less road which is a big bonus! You’ll love it 👍
Very close indeed! Went to primary school in Bolton though lived in Atherton at time time. Still close by though. Can’t get away from that accent 😂
@@TrailRunningCouple hahaha knew it! Great vid guys, getting pumped for it. Furthest I’ve gone is 30 mile with 1km gain, maybe see you there! Less road sounds great haha
Well done everyone..What action camera were you using. Fabulous footage..🤩
Thank you! Would have been a GoPro 9 or 10 at the time. Great little cameras that catch remarkable footage 👍
Hi, nice video. Fenix makes some nice lights and I recently picked up the Fenix HM65R-T V2.0. I like the warm and cool beams, but I was a little disappointed that they won't let you use both together in this version. The warm light does go up to 800 lumens now so that is a plus.
Thank you! We thought the same as using the combined lamps on the DT gave great definition.
Cracking effort and love the attitude, really like your videos. I'm off to the lakes this weekend for LIaD and have been watching your efforts for tips. No shame in a DNF when it is right, if it makes you feel better in 2014 I DNFd at mile 127/145 of the GUCR so feel your pain of being close! It took me 10 years and 3 more attempts but beat it this year. Go smash the next one!
Thank you very much Kenny, appreciate it. Hopefully will smash the next one and may even see you on the start line this Saturday!! Best of luck 👍
I have this loop planned for my next trip to the Lakes in early November. But I will start at the southern point and go anti clockwise. I may bail out early and follow the lake for the last few miles if it is as boggy as it was for you! Thanks for your great content guys ❤
Thank you! It’s a lovely route but was indeed boggy when we did it. A total contrast to the Helvellyn ridge. Hope you have great weather and enjoy it 👍
Great effort in those conditions, really enjoyed this!
Thank you David, shame it didn’t go to plan but that’s the way it goes sometimes!
I just used this model for the first time tonight during my trail run. The warm+white light is brilliant. As you said in the video, the warm light truly gives definition of rocks, trees, just basically everything lol.
Brilliant isn’t it? Makes such a difference with added definition. Enjoy and thanks for commenting 👍
Only just caught up on this one despite it being on my "watch later" list somce you released it. You said at the end of your last one that you weren't sure if you would go to the Lakeland 100 again... Any further thoughts?! Ash
Hi Ash! Thanks for watching. Tough weekend that was but we’ll be in the ballot again for next year. Just like the punishment I guess 😂
Unlucky guys, not for the lack of trying that's for sure. Hope the injuries have healed.
Hi David, thanks very much. Both feeling better now so it’s all steam ahead for Lakes in a Day! How are the ribs? Have you planned another attempt?
Can you camp en route ?
We camped at the bottom at Wasdale Campsite, as for wild camping I guess so but not something we’ve done 👍
@@TrailRunningCouple great good to know Thank you
Please can someone send me the gpx, I can’t seem to access it
Just click the link and download from there. It’s in the description 👍
When I did this in October last year the ascent out of Bradwell was diverted round the quarry as one of the fields had a sinkhole. Was that still the case when you did it? As I’m doing it again this weekend. Great video , some different sights from the summer run you did of it.
Hi, sorry for the late reply! The route we followed was pretty much as per the GPX. I wasn’t aware of any diversions made apart from maybe the odd wrong turn!! 😂 Did you manage to do it? How was it? 👍
@@TrailRunningCouple it was fantastic. Gorgeous weather with a nice breeze. The field with the sinkhole was actually open so that was alright. We took a few wrong turns following the gpx route but they were soon noticed. 5 hours 4 mins in total. That’s over 2 hours quicker than last time but I was only using the route map and was solo then (tons more wrong turns that time, I did 22 miles that day!! 😩)
Sounds like a great day out, well done! It’s easy to make the odd mistake, I think we’ve done both times we’ve done that route 😂 Also congrats on doing it much quicker too 👍
Marley looks like he's having a lot of fun, well done another great vlog 👍
Thank you, he loves it 👍
Well done team!
Thank you 👍
Well done both. Glad you have had a good break. Good to see Cheryl's knee is not giving to much trouble. Enjoyed seeing the latter Miles of the LL100. Looks like Marley enjoyed himself too. 👊👍
Thanks both, really enjoyed our time off. Also good for us to see the latter miles. I know we didn’t get chance this year and last year it was pitch black!!
What a glorious run. Scenery was stunning. Loved the expression on Marley's face when you wanted him to climb up into the rocks (really?) and the way he kept looking back check he was going the right way. Hope the knee holds up Cheryl. I can sympathise, losing a few months myself with MCL trouble.
Thanks so much, hope you’re on the mend now? Marley absolutely loves his time in the Lakes, he’s such a great dog. He surprised us the first time he shot up short scrambling routes without any issue at all. He looks back at us as if to say, hurry up, come on!! 😂
In awe that you went back so soon after the race. Total respect. Marley makes it look so easy on the tough trails too. I will add that apart from the aid station locations, majority of it i didn't recognise 🤣. Very surprised that whole trip was 25 miles. I would have thought a lot more. Will absolutely do the the coniston to ambleside cumbria way route at some point. It will give me a different perspective on the area. Best video to date also 💪
Thanks Andy. Marley makes everything look easy when compared to us, he just breezes along! Same with us too, this is not how I remember the route last year. It’s totally different! It’s actually a really nice route, as was the circle back to Ambleside. Highly recommend it 👍
You were very assertive with those cows Cheryl 😂 Well done great run. 👍
Had to be done, we certainly weren’t prepared to turn back!! 😂
Well done both. Definitely better in the daylight😂. We use that route quite a lot for our training. Shame it’s always in darkness for the Lakeland
It’s a great route in the daylight, not so much at the business end of a 100 miler!! Thanks 👍
Gorgeous route.
Thanks, one we’ll be doing again at some point 👍
Well done both of you and Marley was having the time of his life - thanks for sharing this with us
Thank you for watching, he’s absolutely loving his time on the fells 😊
Well done guys. 👍🏼
Thanks Mike 👍
Cracking run 👍👏 well done ! Good to see niggle didn’t get worse, 24 miles a long way! Marley did really well! Nice well behaved doggy 👏👏
Thanks Ian. Cheryl actually took her knee support off later in the run as the compression from it became more painful than the knee. There didn’t seem to be any ill effects from it so nothing much to worry about. Marley really is a pleasure to have and to run with. Love him to bits 🥰 Thank you 👍
Another fantastic upload. Glad the knee is feeling better, mine hasn't been the same since the HOWUM 30 in May. Patella tendinitis is plaguing me at the minute, hopefully only having 2 Half Marathon's to complete before the end of the year, so that will be less impact on my knee. Ready for The Lap May '25.
Cheryl’s knee is definitely better but still has niggles. All being well it’ll sort itself out within a couple of weeks or so. Hopefully your issue would be too long lived either. Nothing worse is there?! The Lap is such a great event. Don’t think you’ve done it before have you? Is Vikki doing it as well?
@TrailRunningCouple yes, Vikki and I are both doing it, it will be her biggest so far, and just shy of my longest, but, I do appreciate the fact we've never run in the Lakes and I will be giving it the utmost respect it deserves. The knee. Yes it's very debilitating, frustrating and infuriating, but worst of all it's playing with my head a lot, and I'm already worried about The Lap now, and it shouldn't be like that. We'll see though, I'll either complete it, or I won't, and if I don't I will be back to do it.
@@darrenwilliams9643 Looking forward to tracking you both to successful finishes. It’s a great route which certainly takes your mind away from the mammoth task 👍
What a beautiful day. Gorgeous scenery. Great video guys. Marley is having a blast.
Thank you! Marley loves being out so much, it’s hard to drag him away at the end 😂
Brilliant guys well done 🏃🏃 sorry but Marley is the star in this video.🐕
We absolutely couldn’t agree more!! He’s brilliant and a great companion over the fells. We’re so lucky to have him. Thank you 👍
Hi Gary and Cheryl, gutted for you, but sometimes it just doesn’t go for you, you 2 are as hard as nails so the only time you won’t get round is if your bodies let you down, absolutely no shame in DNF, to cover the distance and ascent/decent you did was still an incredible achievement, 50 miles is the furthest I’ve been which is nothing compared to what you do, I did the Bronte Way in November and that is still the hardest thing I have ever done, I had goretex boots but water went over the top and for about 30 miles no matter how many times i changed my socks they were wet again within 2 minutes, my feet at the end were similar to how Gary described his, massive blisters on forefoot’s and lots elsewhere. I am sure you will be back, keep doing what you do, you are both amazing. All the best Tito 👍😊
Thank you so much Tito, your kind words are very much appreciated. We’ve definitely taken this on the chin. Yes we’re disappointed but injuries happen and can change the outcome of any race/event. More so in the longer ones. We’ll be back again next year if we get through the ballot. Haven’t seen much of the Bronte Way…
Brave effort. That’s a lot of pack weight. Thanks for sharing. Great weather once again in the Lakes. That weather will sap your strength and inner belief. Next time 😂
Typical Lakes 😂 We had a little time off so thought we would give it a go. Nothing lost really, still enjoyed what we did. Thank you 👍
Absolutely brilliant video. I chatted to you on the start line and then headed to the back of the pack for the duration. Your video really shows the strength of will required to take on something like the 100 but also shows how exposing it is and the crazy roller coaster of emotions you can experience. I think it's so important to have videos like this that celebrate the effort and the experience whilst acknowledging that sometimes it just doesn't go to plan. Thanks for the video and looking forward to seeing more of Marley on future vids!
Thank you so much. We remember talking to you. Hope your race went without too many hitches?? It wasn’t our weekend at all but even so we tried to push through it. We’re safe in the knowledge that it’s injuries that inevitably stopped us rather than our minds giving up. That was far from the case which made it incredibly difficult to call it at Ambleside. We’ll be back again to put this right. Need to!!
Thanks for the video - brought back a lot of memories and sorry it didn’t quite work out for you this year.
Hi and thank you. Not to worry, just wasn’t our weekend but what can you do? We’ll be back again 👍
Finally got round watching this. I'm an expert at DNF's as you know and i applaud you both for the determination right up to Ambleside when you have to say 'enough is enough'. You're still heroes and legends in my book and i certainly know when knees and feet become an issue. You'll be back though one day and stronger. When things like covid etc happen in the same year, you think you have recovered but your body hasn't. It takes more than a year to get fit again. Bloody great video though and the best one yet of the Lakeland 100. Respect to you both.
Thanks Andy, appreciate your kind words. This certainly took some much out of us both by the end but ultimately it was injuries forcing the DNF. Mentally we were still strong but we had to be realistic with speed we were travelling given that there were a few more ascents. We would both hate to call upon others for help so chose the safe option and took the DNF! We’ll be in the ballot again in September and should we not be successful will be looking for an alternative 100, probably the Brecon Beacons with GBUltras, same day and similar numbers to LL100. Rest up Legend 👍
Well done excellent effort you two hope you crack it next time. I cannot imagine the state of Gary’s feet after 90+ miles mine were destroyed after a mere 50km on the Race to the Stones a few weeks ago.
Thanks Bill. They were a mess. Rated in the top three by the medic at the 60 mile aid station. I have to admit, blister plasters and paracetamol does make a difference. We did Race to the Stones (and King) a few years ago. Great events and routes 👍
See I made the final cut on the Gatesgarth climb, I remember you two coming by.
That’s a tough ascent out of Mardale!
Well done guys, you live to fight another day. Be great to see you running some of our 50s and 100s down here in the south west and south Wales.
Thanks so much, appreciate it. We haven’t done much down south to be honest apart from Race to the King. Race to the Stones and North Downs Way 200. Need to do more!!
I passed you just before Howtown, I think it was, I couldn't remember your names so said "you're the guys from TH-cam eh?". You said you were struggling then so what an achievement to make it to Ambleside. The 50 is hard so what you 100 (105 miles) guys do is mind boggling 🤯. Great video BTW. I hope you recover quickly.
Thank you, it was a tough weekend for sure. Recovering well now and hopefully be back again next year. Congratulations on your 50. Your support is very much appreciated 👍
Well done both - an incredible effort and account of what it takes to run the 100! Loved hearing your thoughts as you progressed. I DNF’d in 2017 and feel there is unfinished business here for me : ) Must have passed you at some point as I ran the 50 this year. I know exactly what you mean about the muddy descent into Haweswater!!! Well done 👏🏻
Thank you so much. Luckily we managed a finish last year so bitter sweet really. It’s 1-1 now. Hopefully back again next year. Will you be entering the ballot for the 100 to put the record straight?! Congrats on your 50 👍
Good question! Undecided as of yet!
Epic efforts!
Thank you ☺️
It takes so much courage to know when enough is enough. Well done both, you should be proud of the effort and what was achieved
Thank you, appreciate your kind comments 😊
Great seeing you again guys. Totally gutted you didn’t make to the end. But totally the right decision made. Thanks for sharing your journey. See you out on the fells 🤙🏼
Hi Mike, nice to see you too 👍 Just not to be this year but we gave it a good go so happy with that. Thanks and see you soon no doubt 😊
You guys are so awesome. I've said it before and I'll say it again, you are an inspiration to us, your fellow runners. Your honesty shines through in your films, you should be extremely proud of this (and your many other) achievements. Many congratulations on an incredible effort!
Thank you so much, your comments mean a lot to us. We do try and show how it is, even the low points as to some that’s more important. We’re all human and can’t always succeed. It’s about overcoming and coming back to have another go 👍
Brilliant effort guys, as they say there's always next year x
Managed it last year, was hoping for 2-0 instead of 1-1. May have to set that right next year!! Thanks for watching 👍
Omg you two are so resilient - huge well done! Also a lovely video - I settled down to watch it with a beer after work and was not disappointed, some beautiful scenery especially around sunset and dawn.
Thank you so much. Your support is very much appreciated ☺️
Huge effort and you gave it your absolute all, well done guys that is some monster distance. I think its also commendable that you stopped so close to the end knowing it was the right and safe thing to do, its so easy to get sole focus in situations like that.
Thanks so much. Given we had completed the hardest parts of the course and we had a mere 14 miles left on easier ground it was hard to walk away. That said, we knew we couldn’t keep the pace needed so issues would have arisen. It’s just not worth it when others may have been required to help us. Happy with the decision in those circumstances. Thank you for your comments 😊
a sensible decision - no shame in not finishing - if you had carried on you might have ruined both knees and feet and then taking ages to heal - and marley would be very cross with you lol thanks for sharing this with us
Thanks so much. It was all about living to fight another day. We’ll be back, no doubt about it!!
An amazing effort guys, you should be very proud. You did absolutely the right thing by stopping when you did, there will always be next year. Keep up the great work
Thanks so much. Looking towards 2025!!
Bad luck guys. I was marshalling at Ambleside and had said hello to you before the start on Friday. I wasn’t sure if you had DNF’d or not so didn’t want to raise the subject. It was quite a low personal moment for me in the long shift at Ambleside to see you both in pain and so disappointed. I hope you come back next year and breeze through Ambleside with more luck on your side. Keep up with the content. It’s so inspiring.
Thank you so much. I think we both felt a little down at Ambleside knowing it was over for us but with a knee injury (Cheryl) you just have to be so careful, especially when it was as painful as it was. We’ll be back again for sure 👍
