#37 RECORD HUNTING IN KNOXVILLE Some great JAZZ LP'S
I like the suggestion of Terry Gibbs in a small group setting on Emarcy. Those albums swing so hard and the sound is so well recorded it’s like the band is right in your listening room. Shades of Ahmad Jamal live at the Pershing.
Great video thanks again Jack
Hi Jack. Andre Previn, I hate the guy. Classical pianist extraordinaire, Jazz supremo, sense of humour, suave and charismatic. Don't you just hate that. 🤣🤣🤣 Just picked up his Shostakovich No5 on EMI. Sounds awesome. Great vid mate.
I heard he was a really funny guy to be around as well. The studio guys in LA loved him, He had it all. had a bunch of wives so I bet he had a pretty colorful life!--I'm like a choir boy!!! Thanks forthe comment and for listening-Regards, Jack
Great new features...I listen to classical also and I hope you will continue to talk about that a little bit. I have been getting into Ben Webster recently and am really enjoying that journey. I got a record called Ben Webster Meets Oscar Peterson that I have been enjoying. But I am definitely going to check out that Johnny Hodges record!
Jack, thanks a lot for your great videos. To tell you the truth, I don't understand when, suddenly, they reissued, some Count Basie last recordings which are not, very far away, on the same level as some others Pablo's before .... The 2 which are reissued there are the last to buy !!! The band sounds very tired and not precise at all. Those are very very dissapointing sessions !!! Better than that : all the tunes were on the book for decades, never recorded before. So they had them in the fingers as I can say but it's not at the top level as Bill used to give us, musically. As, today, we are into "the best sound quality possible way", the producers decide to reissue those. Come on !!! What about "I Told You So", "Live in Japan 1978", "On The Road", the 2 volumes with Milt Jackson, "Warm Breeze", "Kansas City Shout" .... Those are masterpieces to me. As you know, Bill was not in good health since the fall of 1981 and really, we all can feel it. The band sounds more loud, unprecised, more conventional ... This was no more the Basie band that I loved, revered for all of decades that we know .... I'm pissed of, sorry to say. I think I have all Basie's albums, about 500. Sound quality first, then the quality of the music. I'll never buy this concept ! All about money and money, sellings and sellings !!!!!!! Bob Cooper was one the greatest to me, sooo underrated because he didn't recorded that much in Jazz settings, very busy in the studios for composing and arranging and this is a shame !!! But we can't go back and do again the history. But boy !! He could play !!! Great arranger and composer. Jazz people don't really know about it, he did a lot for TV shows, series and movies, cartoons, when his name appeared in a very little characters .... A shame but that was a time then. Life, sometimes, isn't always fair enough. He was a good friend of mine, that's why I write those words about him because I know all the story. Do you know who put and arranged Victor Feldman's moving from England to LA and in the LA studios ?
That’s one cheesy looking cover on the Bob Cooper album.
Andre Previn recommendation for you AP and Thomas Stevens ‘A Classic American Sonbbook’ cheers, Ted
You are so right... I checked it out and it great!!!--Thanks---this is why I love doing these videos--I always get such great info form folks like you. Thanks for the comment and the recommendation.---JG
Great job, Jack! I'm loving the Johnny Hodges reissue. What a beauty and that jacket was so beautiful as well! That particular Victrola is one I DONT have and I do love the original and Classic Records versions. Always worth a chance with Victrola, I'm sorry you didn't get a truly mint one this time. Thanks for the shoutout and for your appearances on the Everything Ckassical Livestream.
Scott..I'd say this is a VG+ and has great almost living stereo sound.... I don't get why folks say one thing and deliver another...but thats eBay for you!.... JG
@@Jackgrahamphotograph I'm much too picky about condition to gamble on eBay these days. When I picked up Victrolas, it was a cheap gamble for a buck and I could physically inspect the record.
Nice work Jack. I have the Bassie 88 would love the new KG mastered item but here in the land of blatant rip offs (Australia), the cheapest I can find a copy delivered is around the AUD $150 !!!!! will keep playing my old copy...ha ha ha. You are correct the Sibelius No5 was Living Stereo LSC2405. Cheers Graham
Graham, I wonder how much the post is to Australia... They are in stock at Acoustic sounds.. I could buy one and mail it to you.. postage and duty cost? ..no idea... If you are interested let me know. my email is Jack@jackgrahamphoto.com....the record is 40.00 + shipping( about 52.00 US from Acoustic sounds... I wonder if they ship to Australia ? let me know..I'd be happy to help! Thanks for the listen and comment. JG
Great video Awesome Great job Jack
Great video Well done
And don't forget the soprano album!
Bob Cooper sounds amazing on the Howard Rumsey Music for Lighthousekeeping album, I'm really hoping they do the album you mentioned here on the acoustic sound series!
sure does!!!---such an underrated player... at least by some. Thanks for the comment!---JG
have you listened to any of the trptk LP's? classical label out of the Netherlands I got some seam splits and a scratch on my order. They replaced all three records in their new better box
not yet... I might order them as well. I have streamed them and they offer great sound and very interesting music..really no excuses for the slit seams with todays technology...JG
So glad to see a video on Andre Previn.I first heard his playing on Shelly Manne and Friends album and was really impressed, also his Jazz rendition of Camelot.Hes the only jazz pianist that I would ever consider in the same stratosphere as Bill Evans in that non Bluesey / classics based piano jazz that l prefer.
Thanks for the comment--you are 100% correct... what a genius!---appreciate the reply and your viewship!-JG
Great video Jack
Thanks Eric..more folks need to know about Previn!-Thanks for wwatching!!!--JG
He SHOULD BE spoken about with all those names you mentioned - he was a PRODIGY! INCREDIBLE pianist!!! I have the Previn 96 CD box set as well as jazz & classical vinyl LPs !!! Great video 👍
No one lese I know was a jazz pianist, arranger, world class conductor!--what a genius!-...thanks for watching and for the comment--JG
My Fair Lady is a favorite! Previn, Shelly Manne and Leroy Vinnegar make a great trio!
i have a few andre previn albums, he made a few non jazz albums, but the ones on contemporary records are definitely jazz!
Dave, As a classical guy as well I have almost all of his recordings. He did a gret job in that area as well. A true genius! Thanks for watching and keep ip you great work as well! JG
Hi Jack! Great video on this I'm important artist. I knew him from the classical world, and was surprised when I started discovering his jazz outings. Thanks for covering this aspect of his career. Loved the West Side Story reissue. Great stuff! I appreciate the shout out!
Great video on Previn. His album King Size is my favourite and so deserving of a reissue.
Great video, Jack. And thank you so much for the shout outs! Cheers, a
Hey Jack! I should have guessed you had a channel with all your knowledge! Just wondering as I am a Jazz newbie. What are your thoughts on Melody Gardot? I love her, almost as much as Billie and Ella - almost 😁
Bill Evans was never background music. Bill Evans 65' was a great group. I saw them live at Shelly's Manne Hole in the sixties. The record itself was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder the great Blue Note Series. He was my least favorite engineer for Evans. Evans Riverside recordings captured the soft nuances of his sound. I thought Van Gelders sound was hard and mettalic😮
I couldnt agree more... Just listen to" It Might as Well be Spring"---the reissue in 22(I think) was amazing... RVG is revered and I think did a good job ,back in the day, with the Blue Note quintet things etc( the reissues remastered I think are much better than the OG's) but his trios things and what you refer to as more nuanced music was pretty mediocre. I made a comment to someone here in the forum on how Bill's Riverside recordings were far superioe in sound AND musically! Listen to his playing on Kind of Blue... the recording was amazingly good dealing with Even's sound on the piano...Verve stuff... ok, but not great!! Very good points..thank you.... and thanks for the comment and for listening!
I have about a dozen box sets on Bill Evans alone. He's not in my Top 10 at the piano and I rank Dave Brubeck, Horace Silver, Sonny Clark, John Wright, and Red Garland much higher. When you have 80K cds, they all compete for your time and Evans is middle of the pack for me but very distinct. Like Art Pepper, Chet Baker, and Dave Brubeck, I find his later work rather redundant. I have his full catalog twice over in standalone cds and box set form. Stan Kenton was popular as well and we see how much he's discussed today. That's for the tip off on Golson. That I missed. By the mid 60's, I'm falling off the wagon and getting into Stax and Motown.
wow thats a lot of music !!!!!! so many great players and so many underated... John Wright for one!-Thanks fo thecomment an for listening---new video coming romorrow I hope!..JG
Speaking of Bill Evans there's a great new book out by James Kaplan called 3 Shades of Blue: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans and the lost empire of Cool that just came out this year you might want to check out
Thanks Dan…read it…great invite in this book….appreciate the comment and for listening!,,,,,JG
Good one Jack - Mike
Thanks…you bums are some of the best jazz info creators here on the tube! Keep it up…Though I am busier with travel and my photo business these days..I check out each and every video you all do…and learn something every time…thanks for what you do!…JG
Even's music was a staple of my father's studio. So I learned about cool jazz before I could walk. It’s true that the audience imposes meaning and context onto music. Every record is special to someone. But that is the living essence of culture in a consumer world. It gets validated when people dive deeper, and get beyond personal likes and dislikes. There is plenty of music that I respect, but would not be my first choice to listen too. Consuming music is NOT the same as composing or performing it, and it is very easy to forget this. Which is why humility is essential. There is nothing like music to bring out the closet fascist in a random citizen. Thank god the era of art critiques and king maker record labels has been relegated to the history books by the internet. The money may be gone, but every song can in theory find its fans. Comparison, is the ultimate market force that refines popular culture over the long term. The gems tend to gather their own audience, and seminal works don’t have to be great performances in their own right. Culture is full of happy accidents, and all ideas can be inspirational. I dig Bill Evans because his work CONTINUES to stands out as my musical knowledge expands. What greater compliment can anyone make?
What a great reply.... and I agree100%.......its so important the folks appreciate some kind of art, especially music....its good for the mind and the soul. You really nailed things so well...thank you! and this is why these forums are so educational, and fun to learn from...JG
I just love "Trio 65". I have that same copy. The music just keeps growing.
Evan was a genius! I just wish he stayed with Riverside! Verve paid well!-Thanks for watching!-JG
I can see, where the reviewer was coming from. When the reissues of Trio 64 and 65 were announced, I streamed them on my phone, while I was doing stuff around my home. At that time I was still new to jazz and not familiar with Bill Evans. The music didn't catch my attention and I remember thinking, that it was kind of elevator music. I gave it a second chance later on, where I would just sit and listen to the music and not do anything else. This time it did catch me, so I ordered both records and still like them. But Trio 64 is still the stronger one imho. My favorite recordings of his are You must believe in Spring and Everybody digs... With Peace Piece as my favorite track. That song is pure bliss.
I guess I’m not a sufficient jazz enthusiast, since i have this album, and absolutely LOVE it. But, then again, i love Jazz of different persuasions from 30s - late 50s, and just a few early 60s. After that, it tends away from my flavor.
I guess I'm on the downbeat side with this record That's why I find it on sale all the time and even then knowing how great acoustic sounds makes their records after listening to it I still found nothing on the record to warrant purchasing the album. I already have too many records I don't listen to. Thanks for making the video I do enjoy your channel
Thanks Ron…back atcha… enjoy yours as well…. Verve was sometimes no friend to musicians…all about the $$$… but then again the musicians know that going in! JG
I bought Trio '65 when it came out. Very disappointing. Uninspired playing, short tracks. Big and longtime fan of Evans but that LP just didn't cut it, IMHO.
I’d give it almost a four star.. just not quite….his Riverside recordings were a lot better in my opinion…verve had a different mindset from Riverside…thus the shorter tracks I think…..thanks for the comment and checking out the video…Jg
Bill Evans is great, but very predictable. It maybe an exaggeration, but I always say if you heard 1 Bill Evans record you heard them all. Nobody can beat Miles Davis for making something new. Kind of Blue and Miles Smiles are miles apart. The reviewer's comments about Evans also reflect as to why Jazz music has not lasted in popularity. Much of it is route. Rock music is much more dynamic in styles. Maybe there's more to work with in Rock than Jazz, and explains the fascination with the Beatles. Very diverse records, totally different from each other.
thanks for the comment.. Perhaps, likke everyting in art, personl taste is just that.. personal. I hope we can agree to disagree on the "much of it is route" and Evans is predictable.! Though I am far from a Beatles expert or even qualified to go into much discourse on them, most musical writers and scholars praise their creativity and what they did, even beyond what the general public appreciated. A good case in point it the great Leonard Bernstein...check out this video! th-cam.com/video/v32U0mjGz6g/w-d-xo.html Again, thanks for the coment and for listening... great to get different viewpoints... With respect--JG
Sounds like Mr. Wilson may have had a personal beef with Bill. Interesting that you showed “Everybody Digs…”, the cover says it all. I will trust the opinions of Miles, George Shearing, and Ahmad Jamal, over the reviewer any day. Excellent job Jack!
You are 100% correct…God forbid we listen! I’ve heard some pretty good unknown pianists in hotel lounges…that required some listening to appreciate…nothing wrong with that! Thanks for listening and for the comment…JG
Its clear that that critic in Downbeat has landed firmly on the wrong side of history.Likening Evans playing to background noise is something one would expect from someone with only a passing knowledge or interest in piano jazz.I would like to see other reviews of that album from the same time frame.
Me too…..I’ll keep looking!,,,,the Penguin guide gave it *** as well…said it was”Good..not great”….i wonder if that reviewer was influenced by the downbeat writer.Downbeat carried a lot of weight back then? Thanks for the comment &for listening…JG
Great insight and very interesting information, Jack. Thx for the hard work. Cheers, a
See ya tonight… booming a storms here today! A good BRUCKNER day!
If the review was done in 1965 it's not 49 years ago but 59 years ago! Sorry. All in all this is a fantastic record, I agree
Paolo…thanks for the comment…math is why I use an accountant!,,,..Trio 64 & 65 are both 2 of my favorite Evans recordings….thanks for checking out andvcommenting…JG
Very interesting. Reviews back in the day (both music and equipment) were very different than today. They said what they thought because they didn't have to please advertisers. Reviews in modern magazines are all suspect IMO.
Verve sure was advertiser, but you are correct back then the thinking was a 3star rating and review(mention) was better than no review or mention…. I just , personally found this review unreasonable…perhaps I’m too much of an Evans lover. However there are some rather average records that Bill made, like a lot of folks… guess it’s all personal taste…thanks for the comment and for checking out the video…JG
You mus beileve in Spring was my :Record of Year in 2023!---amazing---thsno for the coment and for watching!-JG
Great video! I'll love to have that album.
Got mine coming in the mail can't wait
Jack, with regard to your 3 selected recordings, I'm in complete agreement with you. I look forward to seeing your record shootout of the two Craft Records.
Great video, Jack. Love the IU and NJ references. All the best, a
And now we see Acoustic Sounds reissuing some of them, great label, well recorded, well made jazz records!
Sicuramente + care!
You were way ahead of the curve on this one. Thank you for all you do.
Thanks Lawrence---I hope I ( and others) are not driving up the prices on Used Pablo's----there still re many to be had at resaonable pricing!!!=Thnks for listening and for the comment..JG
hopefully they will release more Pablo records, Pablo is one of my fave labels
That Dizzy record reminds me that Verve should do Sonny Side Up. Looks like it’s from the same session.
What a s record box that would make…..veer similar and both recorded is the same period,,, actually like the tune selection on Sonny Side better…but Rollins sounds so good on Duets….I hope chad is reading this-- I bet the Mono masters are in good shape..thanks for the comment and for listening✌🏻
Jack - I love what you are doing with the Pablo and Contemporary labels - I have learned a lot and your suggestions have been spot on I also have that same “Jazz Alive at the Half Note” with Zoot Sims, Al Cohn and Phil Woods - I have a near mint OG stereo on United Artists - it is a deep groove pressed by Plastylite (it has the “ear”) and it is in a gatefold just like an Impulse - hard card stock and shiny cover with great session photos - a real work of art
Curious how these will do. Batches of 5 or 6 in recent auctions went for 40-60 for the lot.
I am seeing prices on some of the popular Pablo's ( and getting a bit tougher to find) going up... Supply and Demand. (Notice THE BASIE "Me and You" is not on the list!!!)...I also think that the remaster and QRP Pressing will offer some quiet vinyl. Some of my OG's are so good its going to be tough to improve on.. but Acoustic Sounds ususlly do a great job. Chad is no Dummy... I think he'll ddo fine on these. They are all great titles.--I hipe you are well. Flying to Seattle tomorrow--workshop up on the Olympic Peninsula then off the Sitka for the whles bubble feeding!---BE BOP!---JG
A breath of fresh air to hear about Pablo. I had some but increased my collection with your enthusiastic efforts.
This is great new for those looking for some hard ( and getting harder to get clean copies) to find great music!-Thanks for listening and for the comment. It means a lot!-Jack
