  • YES, I’m finally settling into life here in Eastern Tennessee, just south and east of Knoxville. In this video I
talk about the new reissue of Smokin at the Half Note, by Wes Montgomery and the Wynton Kelly Trio,
comparing it to the original Verve. I go through the confusing history of this recording. Did you know it
was not ALL RECORDED at the HALF NOTE? Check out the video for more details and click the link below
for a comprehensive description of the storied history of Smokin at the Half Note.
I also talk a out a compilation of trumpet masters on Pablo with Oscar Peterson, a very early sonny Stitt
recording, a very underrated and kind of obscure Bill Evans record and finally a gem and somewhat
    overlooked Coltrane record.
HERE IS SOME INTERESTING NOTES ON SMOKIN AT THE HALF NOTE / Kelly/Montgomery

So good to see you back, Jack, showing the goods. Keep those allergies at Bay. Close the windows and doors and spin those tracks all day and night. Be well!!

Just bought the “Smokin’” album. Had it on CD but just couldn’t resist getting the new Acoustic Sounds vinyl edition. Totally agree that it should be much more highly regarded than it is.

    Super video, as usual Man.
About this famous Wynton Kelly trio & Wes Montgomery, there were very virulent disputes between the musicians and Creed Taylor. Creed wanted to do it a certain way, the musicians didn't agree at all because what he wanted to edit had not been discussed like this in the beginning. It's a very complex business too, which I'll explain in one of my videos one day. I got all this valuable information from Jimmy Cobb and Paul Chambers' widow. The only thing Creed respected (because he had no choice) was "The Wynton Kelly Trio featuring Wes Montgomery", because that was what was presented to the club and not the other way around, W.M & the W.K trio as Creed wanted. Then, when listening to the tapes, the sound was not always the same, it varied a lot between some tracks, so some were not "editable" as it was .... In short, a real serial novel and a headache for all the people who took part in the project.

.... thanks for the added info as usual... I know Taylor was looked at as a major producer, and had is own ideas on how to generate $$$$ during times when playing jazz wasn't conducive to big checks!--but as a "jazz" oriented person, I think , at lest for me ,he was misguided., though obviously successful. Controlling music and musicians and getting them to produce somewhat commercial material inhibits creativity. Putting artist in perhaps the wrong frame of mind is also counter- productive. For me Milt Jackson's "Little Sunflower" on CTI was one of the very few decent editions of that label. ....Shame... had had so many great musicians in his orbit...but then again, they needed to make a living...the club scene for jazz musicians didn't always pay the bills ! .... -thank you again---such a privilege to have you watch and comment--JG

Nice one jack hope you’re settling in to your new pad. Main thing get the hifi up and running. The Wes Montgomery sounds like a good one. The pablos are great I pick them up when I see them. Anything for John Coltrane for me a great period on prestige.
