In the vast, uncharted world of TH-cam comments, there exists a peculiar subset of commentary: the knitting and crochet aficionados. Armed with nothing more than needles, yarn, and an opinion, a brave few have ventured into the comment section of my earlier videos. Stitch markers are 100% unnecessary imo, I use paper clips, safety pins, earrings etc whatever I have on hand. They’re not that expensive but for how many you get and the fact that you almost definitely already have something that does the same thing, feels like a waste of money. Also, I feel like the whole idea of a “yarn stash”/yarn shelf is misleading to people just starting the hobby… there’s no need to buy yarn just to have it. Buy yarn as you need it for specific projects and maybe pick up a few cheap or free skeins to play with

The word I would use for your channel and 'vibe' is intentional. The thought you put into what you say and choose to share is evident. (these were my assumptions and feel confirmed by what you have said here!) My thoughts on the doom and gloom are that one, your voice is fine. I also speak with a fair bit of vocal fry (the crackle) particularly when I am comfortable and relaxed, so for me it reads as you being, well, comfortable and relaxed? laid back? Which in my book is a positive but other people have other books i guess. Two, the internet safety thing is so important to me personally and its nice to see someone who shares that. Most of my time as an internet citizen has been spend in corners where you barely share your first name let alone location beyond country or time zone. So people sharing their city and photos of it is just wild to me. Truly nothing makes you respect a skill more than giving it a go yourself. I got really into a small community on twitch during lockdown and dabbled in streaming with some friends in that sphere and man it was a lot. I also made rules for myself that if anything happened with that I wouldn't monetize it. I knew it would change my relationship with art and video games in a way I didn't like. I only feel a little bad for writing an essay in your comments section, I am a wordy one. Congrats on a year! Here's to enjoying the internet by making it what you want it to be!

Blocking mats are essential for lace knitters as well. If you don't stretch and pin your lace when you block it all the detail is lost.

Oh, and I do use my needle sizer every day. Even with my laser-engraved needle sizes, the numbers are so tiny and faint I can barely read them, especially in evening light. So when I have multiple needles in my project bag for a sweater and I need to change from one size to another, or if I'm pulling a pair of needles to cast a project on, I use my tool to check the size. It's also a useful little conversion chart for the occasions in which a designer uses US sizes but not mm. Plus my needle sizer is dual purpose because it's a ruler as well so it's what I use to check gauge. So with you about dpns being unnecessary though. I haven't touched mine since learning magic loop.

I feel like I'm in the minority that actually likes winding center pull balls by hand, though I understand why some people hate it (time consuming, can be tiring, mobility issues...). To be fair: my stash is very small and I only crochet and tat so I mostly deal with small perle cotton and cordonnet balls (portable enough that I don't usually feel it's necessary to unwind and rewind them), and big crochet cotton balls that are wound onto big cardboard tubes (tend to roll around + the tube wastes space, so I do rewind those!). I like winding them up as a mindless activity while reading something or watching a video, and to be honest it's a really satisfying feeling when you've just freshly wound up a ball of thread and it's all nice and neat and ready to be used! I imagine I'd feel differently about winding yarn if I were a knitter and had to deal with many skeins of wool for every project, but as it is, buying a winder would only waste money and space. On journals, while I wouldn't spend 20$+ on one, I did get a very cheap spiral bound, gridded notebook with a hard cover, which was surprisingly helpful! I'm more of a visual learner, drawing schematics (albeit messily), writing annotations everywhere, I find it more convenient and faster to use a pencil on paper than an app on my phone. I also like to tape samplers with notes on patterns, thread size, brand, etc. to have a point of reference for the future, for those things. Additionally, I like being able to touch and feel the difference between different types of threads, or the texture of some stitches, how do they stretch, etc. which wouldn't necessarily translate well in a picture. On the issue of portability, I don't personally bring mine anywhere so I wouldn't know. If I know I'll need to be referencing something from my notebook (usually a pattern) while I'm on a trip or something, I'll take a picture like a normal person and just look at it on my phone!

I've officially catched up on all your videos! I'm both happy I did because it was really nice spending time with you so often these past months 🥰 and sad because now I have to wait for your new ones... But also happy that I'm looking forward to those 🤭 You're really doing such a great work of filmmaking, with such good ideas (that introduction!) and nice shots and everything. To answer the poll, I'd say your stash is medium. I would consider mine small (I started to actively knit in January of this year, to give an idea) and it's like one third of yours.

Anyway... this was a great video to inspire me. However, I would also like to know what YOU suggest in the way of projects for beginners as I want to learn, but don't want to be overwhelmed and disheartened again. Please and thank you. I'm loving your channel and posivity

I've got some cringy projects in my past. I'm just thankful nobody really took photos of everything back then so there's no proof (lol). If I were trying to learn knitting right now, I would start with a project that gets me excited. For me, that is sweaters. I found them so intimidating but I wish I had started there because I kept making hats and scarves that I found so boring (because that's what I thought I was supposed to do). Once you are able to confidently cast on, cast off, and knit a rectangle, then you are ready to tackle a sweater. I would recommend starting with Kutovakika's sweater tutorial: th-cam.com/video/PwjcDeqpNyw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=iRAN9utCIdtBek-j . If you are not excited about sweaters, I'd just think about what would get you really excited. Maybe that is hats/scarves.

Nice to meet you Isabella :) I am very new here :) I disagree with 2 items on your list. For me, good, sharp scissors are essential. I personally don't have the strength to rip my yarn apart and I find it much easier to weave in the ends when the yarn is cut neatly. However, as you said, people don't need to buy cute ones. The knitting journal I would put in the grey area. It is essential for me to have a notebook specifically for my projects, where I write down what I need to make. Also, since I freehand most of my projects, I can write down a "pattern" (it wouldn't work as a pattern, but it gives me an idea on how I made a specific project) and the yarn I used, in case I like the fit of the finished piece, or I want to make something with the same yarn. Then again, if someone is knitting mainly from patterns, I don't think they need to use a journal for that.

Lately to enjoy more sewing I cut the fabric when I'm in the mood for it, because it's so rare all the pattern's pieces fit correctly on the fabric as indicated in the pattern (I'm talking about clothes here), mostly because the fabrics are not the same width as the fabric in the patterns... And it can take me hours to fit all the pieces and cut them and it drives me crazy if I was in the mood of sewing, because then I just lost hours to cutting fabric. So now I separate the two things in my mind, so when I want to sew I have everything already cut. Another thing I have yet to do, is to sew not what I need, but what I want to sew. All the things I've sewn lately was because I needed this or that, and it became only practical and not so pleasurable, especially if in the end I don't like the garment (that happened a lot). I know what type of garments I like to sew, so I would like to stick to making those and buy the others. That being said, congrats on the duvet cover, it looks really well! 👏 And I'd love to see the other one 😍 Oh and it's surely too late but personally I don't bother to tie a knot with the two threads on the wrong side of the fabric, or only when I'm making topstitch on thin fabrics. Otherwise I just sew back and forth at the start and at the end (like you did) and cut the thread short.

I crochet and I'm very on budget. I bought good crochet hooks, one or two at time (except the micro - from 1,8 to 0,5mm, because I found them at 2€/each, they are older then me but wonderful!), a little box of pins, a couple of hood wood needle, and a lot of Bobby pins. Yes, Bobby pins are great as stitchmarkers, PLUS I use them to close the yarn balls. Fabric shoppers as "project bags" (the most expensive is a 3€ one, the cheapest was free), a tupperware-style box for all the tools. I fall on the yarn: as someone said, buy yarn and use it are two separate hobby 😂

The one time that a yarn winder but no swift makes sense is if you have someone who's willing to be the swift and hold the yarn while you wind

Hi Isabella! Thank you so much for your craft wisdom. Some of the items you mentioned in the gray area/non-essentials I actually considered getting though thought twice about after watching this. I would add to the non-essential list those tension rings for crocheting (I wish I could get my money back), yarn holder bowls (even though I kind of wanted one), and those gamer pillows that are being advertised for crocheters (if necessary, someone can make the shaped pillow out of crochet).

I happened to come across your channel and have fallen in love with your content. your videos are so cozy and calming and I really feel motivated to keep doing what time doing to be able to have projects that I love. thank you for doing what you do, you rock!

I wouldn´t get the cheapest knitting needle set. It´ll cost a little bit more, but a set from a brand is worth it. Needles and cables aren´t exchangable across brands. I bought a basic set when I started knitting and had to buy a different set because I wanted to start knitting clothes and I needed longer cables for that.

Coming in like super late with this but I wanted to add one to the list, a non essential for most people but an essential for me. Stuffing, like some decent, fluffy stuffing, super cheap, got a big bag on Amazon for like 10 bucks. Totally non essential for someone who doesn’t make little stuffies or amigurumi or blankets with stuffing. Also if you don’t make that stuff regularly n don’t want to you can use scraps of extra fabric or extra yarn or like stuffing from an old toy. Anyway, just wanted to add this cuz I was thinking about it.

Medium size stash. I have a similar amount, but just recently found natural fibers so almost all of mine is acrylic 😅 hoping to use it up quickly so I can buy better yarn soon.

I use a needle sizer regularly, yes my needle size info does rub off, but also, it's a measuring ruler and has both imperial and metric units, i get lots of my patterns from ravelry and sometimes gauge is in inches or needle size is in inches and that needle gauge is the only measuring device i have that has imperial units (+ the metrics are still there). I actually have two now because i thought i lost the one i had so i got another but then i found the first one I find row counters essential, yes i could just write it in a notebook but it's SO much easier to have it right there attached to my project. Also serves as "end of round" marker in circular knitting

Regarding swift and ball winder: I think these are perfect items for sharing in your crafting community! The actual amount of time you use them is so short, and you could just hang out with your friend who owns a swift and yarn winder while you wind your balls 😊

I love the idea of sabotaging the algorithm by un-niching. You can stay small on purpose. I never thought of that before. I’ve wanted to make a youtube channel for years and years, but I’m really scared of the privacy stuff. I love that you’ve been purposely obfuscating this whole time! Telling untruths is an honest “No” when the questioner intends to harm you.

I have been knitting and crocheting for 60 years. I hated my cake winder -- too fussy about the weight of yarn, the looseness of the tension, etc. I taught myself to use a nostepinne in the old Scandinavian way. I took an thick dowel rod from the hardware store (an old broom handle will work) cut it to about 12 inches, watched some TH-cam videos and I have never looked back!! Great advice in this video and comments.

The star of this video really is Pippin. Providing the inspiration we all need! 👏 Thank you so much for this video. I took a break on my self drafted pattern because I got overwhelmed. This video gave me the motivation to pick it up and finish it. I'm curious if you have any resources for figuring out the actual maths. Additionally, any guidance on how to place decreases to create a v neck. I know this is dependant on the yarn weight and gauge. But I'm struggling to figure out where to place decreases. Thank you so much!

Ouuu, great question! I don’t have a solid immediate answer, but I’m considering doing a follow up video to get more into the math but I gotta do a bit more research to verify I’m not giving awful advice. 😂 If it were me, I’d do some trial and error. I’d do a quick google search, read through my pattern books, or find a free pattern for a “v-neck”. I’d see what decrease rate they do in each pattern. If several patterns said to decrease 2 stitches every 4 rounds, I’d start with that. If it ended up too deep, I’d adjust and try again with decreasing 2 stitches every 3 rounds.
