High rise Ford Ranger truck cap camper build
So while I wait to finish my Isuzu Elf camper I wanted to be able to sit up straight in my Ranger room. I found a very high top shell for $100 over in VT so took a trip out to pick it up. Definitely needed things but over all super solid and great price. I was able to insulate it get walls up, some shelves, basic lights and stitched up some curtains on my new vintage sowing machine. The machine was seized I had to get it working again (I shot a video of that too but decided against putting it in the video ahah already too long!). I was also able to get some maintenance done on the truck.
Any thanks for checking it out. I really do love it and happy with how it all turned out but damn I really need to get the Elf done!

Ford Ranger truck cap camper build using old pallets (complete build)
มุมมอง 8Kปีที่แล้ว
I built a truck cap camper completely out of old pallets from work, on my 1996 Ford Ranger. I needed a winter project and a place to take my break at work since I wasn't commuting in my Isuzu Elf camper during the winter. So started this project that I wasn't even sure I'd finish but finally finished this spring just in time for summer! I started this channel to inform and find other Isuzu Elf ...

      @@noleftturnunstoned Hey! So rims for the elf PCD are incredibly rare so a few have had some custom spacers made and one person imported (that I know of) the rare one piece Topy rim for an arm and a leg. Back when I made this video there wasn't any of that info around only in the last few years have elf owners been working together and sharing info. But honestly I like the split rims now they are actually pretty easy to work on after getting the hang of it. I'd much rather work on these then deal with spacers or spending on imported ones. Thank you man! I just did my Powersteering hight pressure hose had to get one made because Isuzu couldn't get me the part here in Australia. My bracket was completely broken into two parts, so I had it welded together again. Fittet the hose outside to the bracket and pipe and then fittet the bracket to the engine (with the hose and pipe attached to it). Because it was impossible to get it threated in with the hose and bracket installed first, the bracket wasn't 100% aligned with the pipe. It took 2.5 hours to fit the bracket to the engine - its a tight spot and you need to be patient. I managed to top up the fluid witout removing the entire driver seat and everything else again. Here is how: With your left hand you can reach the fluid container to take the lid off. With your right hand and a syringe you can top up the fluid holding a torch with your left hand so you see where it goes. Great job Bobby! I've worked on Isuzu mid-sized engines for many years, and these engines are engineered to a very high specification. The main cause for 'oil consumption (not the only reason) is, late-oil-changes, these engines need oil-changed every 5000 kilometres.. Also, another contributing factor is the 4JG2, whilst a good engine, is under-powered for Motor-Home application (weight), the weight and head-wind-drag will cause the engine to LUG down, and Isuzu mid-sized engines do-not like lugging. Engine lugging will cause premature engine wear, oil-consumption and increased fuel-consumption. Mid sized Isuzu diesels (the 4J series, such as 4JB1, 4JG1 and G2) are engineered to REV, unlike other diesel engines, therefore, if and.or when the engine starts to struggle/lug? change down a gear and keep-the revs up, your engine is made to run on the red-rev-line. Great engines, i' got a older 1984 Isuzu Elf Campervan, with the older 4JB1 (2.8 non-turbo), non-road-worthy, we use as guest-room for visitors. The old engine starts on 1st crank, after sitting for a year. You made a good choice, enjoy the Isuzu experience. (New Zealand)

This makes me feel better about my situation and will definitely change my driving habits. I have some work to do on it before the winter really sets in. Replacing the cooling fan (original one is showing wear and stress cracks) and a new pulley. I am going to shoot a video of it with an update on the camper remodel too. Your comment gives me some motivation. I'm so happy I ended up with the Isuzu Elf camper, I was in the market for a few different campers - Toyota Townace or Hiace and a Mitsubishi Delica were on my list but I won the Elf at auction first and feel like it is a more robust vehicle than those other ones.

    Hi, great video and content!! Quick question ... do you have 15.5 inch wheels or 16 inch? I am guessing the latter, as Firestone only makes the Transformed AT2 in a 16 inch. Any tire suggestions/options for a 15.5 inch wheel, which is what my Elf has? It is possible to order my 195/70 Dunlop SP LT21 tires from Japan?? Any ideas/suggestions/contacts welcomed! Thanks much --

    • @bobbyswampfox
      @bobbyswampfox 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yea I do have the 16" ones. I'm sorry but I am not sure about the 15.5 options. I know a few others have the same issue and we couldn't find a replacement rim for the elf due to a rare bolt pattern. I think you'd be able to order them from Japan I used JP-Carparts.com to order other parts I couldn't find here. I'd shoot them an email if I were you. Good luck. Thanks for checking out the video!

      Thanks! Oh yeah I totally agree I only went out to find some mud and ended up deep in. On the map it should have connected to another road but the trail ended up being blocked off towards the end we had to turn around and go back over it all. Luckily only some cracked fiberglass on the body (still need to fix that haha)

  • @wc3101
    @wc3101 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    awesome collection of videos, im looking to import one myself to the UK, for the colder weather, did you add any extra insulation to the walls before the ply wood went up, or is the fibreglass body enough? Perhaps some thinsulate wool would be a good idea.

    • @bobbyswampfox
      @bobbyswampfox 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks again. I did put up some foam board insulation behind the walls I'm going to do rock wool on the rear wall, ceiling, and behind the cupboards when I get to them. When I gutted it I was surprised there wasn't insulation behind the walls so I guess it would be fine not too but I want all the help I can get in Maine. I'm taking a break on it and need to save money this winter to finish it all up come spring. More videos to come then. That's awesome you're thinking of getting one I love it but it is slow and takes some effort but would do it all over again.

    Can you go to a tubeless tire? Or is that not possible on these vans?

    • @bobbyswampfox
      @bobbyswampfox 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not if you have the split-ring rims and it seems unless yours comes with the one piece rims you are stuck with the split-ring ones and you'll need tubes. The bolt pattern is very rare and none of us have been able to find replacement rims so far. But a few did come with one piece rims so they're out there just be very expensive and hard to find 😅

    Just fitting mine and hoped I'd find some wiring clues. My Elf had a gas heater with thermostat on a side panel, have traced three of the four wires to reuse but .....one to figure out. Like you I cut a rectangular hole rather than the often described hole saw, I bent up some sheet metal and totally capped the edge of the hole so the base plate rides on the sheet metal but sealant does away with any gap. Cheers from NZ. (want to swap for a couple of months?)

    • @bobbyswampfox
      @bobbyswampfox ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thanks! It does really well up here in the winter. This one time we went camping 2 winter ago and it got down to -21°F, I had to really let the glow plugs work and keep it cranked to get it to fire up. I do all the regular stuff like oil changes coolant leak fix and flush I did my power steering leak fix and flush changed all the belts. Whenever something happens I do my best to figure it out and I keep up on it.
