In 2023 we retired early to travel abroad in winters and live in our van in summers in Canada. We exchanged our corporate jobs, family home and most of our worldly possessions to commence a life of travel and adventure. We decided to document our journey to show you different corners of the globe through our lens, giving our travel tips, food reviews, expense breakdowns and sharing our overall experiences. In the Canadian summers, we will bring you highlights of our beautiful country and share our travels and real life experiences of living full-time in our converted van.
If you are curious about early retirement, slow travel, new cultures and cuisine, van life and a nomadic, minimalist lifestyle, then we hope you will consider subscribing to our channel and following our adventures. So off we go - armed with a positive mindset, our bare necessities, some camera and tech gear, and a sense of humour, we hope to entertain, teach and inspire you through our channel. CHEERS!! 🥂

A Full Van Tour - Our Canadian Retirement Home! 🇨🇦
We are back in Canada and life in our van begins! We are retired and ready to enjoy Canadian experiences. Van Life will be a new experience. As retired Canadians we also appreciate watching our budget. We are excited to bring you our experiences of van life after travelling abroad for the winter.
In this video, we give you a quick and musical snippet of our 40 hour journey home from Thailand to Canada. We uncover our camper van, affectionately known as "Sadie" and get her ready for the summer. We have a few surprises, but all is great. We end with a pretty in depth tour of Sadie!
We hope you enjoy today's video! We are excited to showcase our home country as we live life in the van, immersed in the whole canadian experience. Thanks for watching! Cheers! 🥂

I know I was there for the real thing, but watching your home coming was really cool! And now I know what you actually do all day??? 🤣🤣🤣 But seriously, Adam was featured, Nala was featured... where is my sneaky screen time moment? Lol.jk. ❤ So happy to have you back for all the in person mimosas! 🥂🍾
I am sure you will have a cameo in an upcoming vid Jennie. LOL
Wanna play a fun drinking game? Every time Jan and Mitch say “Um”. It I’ll get ya drunk LOL😂❤
LOL. Bottoms up!
I applied for a visa and put Da nang as my port of entry but I’m changing my destination to another city. Do I need to reapply for another visa or it doesn’t matter?
We cannot ever guarantee anything, however, we do not believe you need to get a new visa. When applying, you have to enter your "planned" port of entry and exit. We did notice that on the approved visa, the port of entry and exit is not even listed. For these reasons, we don't believe that you should have to apply for a new visa. Hope this helps!!
I can’t wait to see how your van life progresses. Exciting times ahead 🎉
Thank you!! It is exciting for sure! Another new chapter!
Awesome video and super cool van! What a change going from Koh Samui to Ontario 🥶 We can’t wait to see your upcoming videos. Stephanie and I are definitely not van life people, but we like to live vicariously through others 😂😂 Safe Travels Steph and Chris @388_Days
It was a bit of a shocker, but we have acclimated nicely now and weather has been above average in Ontario for May! Have fun in Bali!! (We love Bali!)
This is Henrik I am happy for you guys too be back in otawa
Awwww that is so sweet! We are bringing the van up to see you in a few weeks Henrik!! ❤
Welcome home!!!
Thank you so much!!
This was a fun video for me just now. We are ten days away from flying back to Ontario and getting Tia Maria (our campervan and home for the summer) out of storage and ready for the summer. We have a condo in Mexico that we spend the winter in and then summer in our vintage Roadtrek though presently we are on chilly Vancouver Island visting family. I am hoping 🙏 that there are no mousses!! I also put down dryer sheets....
OMG this is so fun! You guys are living the same lifestyle - snowbirds by winter and vanlifers by summer! Just chatted with a friend on the island - she said its very rainy (but also needed). Ontario is having a May heatwave - don't miss it! LOL. Have a great trip home - we have to check out your channel!!
Ahhhh thanks for this learned so much and looking forward to seeing the next adventure!! Hopefully your somewhere around my town and I’ll see you zoomin by!!!
Aw thank you!! Hopefully you do see us zooming by! We need a Mitch & Jan sticker for the van!
Great video guys. Have you ever watched "tread the globe" channel where this uk couple are travelling the world in their van. Maybe something you should consider.
Thank you!! Yes, we have seen them, they are great. Shipping our van overseas has definitely crossed our mind. we need to make it through a summer successfully first! LOL
Such a contrast between Europe/Asia and Canada. Is Canada still ‘home’ for now?
Canada is still home. All of our family is here and it is a big, lovely country in the summer!!! We will be back out abroad in the fall for sure!!
enjoyed your "Canadian Retired Van Life Begins - We Return Home!" video presentation most interesting...I will check back to see more later ! LIKE 12
Sweet van! Looks like a great summer ahead.
Thanks John!! It should be fun!!
Taking off the white hoodie to drink wine! We are the same 🤣
I knew there were some ladies out there who would get me!! 😂
Welcome home! Looking forward to watching your summer travels.
Thank you!! Thanks for watching and following along!! 🥂
Thanks for the info! Do I need an onward ticket out of Vietnam to gain entry with the 90 day e-visa?
Great question! An onward ticket is not required to gain entry for Vietnam. At least not for Canadian, US and Aussie visitors.
PLEASE. Don't Film yourselves in the tour Videos so much. Intro ok. But please Show more of the area.
If I'm going for just 3 week, should i just still put the date I enter Vietnam and then 90 after that date or just put the actual date im leaving after that 3 week period.
Great question! We entered the actual date that we were leaving.
Hi from Mississauga, subscribed! Dream is to leave here and spend time in SEA. How do you manage being outside of Canada for months on end? Any paperwork to do ? Thanks
Hello! Thanks for subscribing!! Managing being gone for months is a lot of planning for administrative stuff mostly - who gets your mail (and opens it), setting up any bill payments and cancelling anything that you don't require while gone. Our family has been the most help if we need things back home. No paperwork necessarily - just check any visa requirements in the places that you want to visit, so you know how long you can stay in each country. Cheers!! 🥂
Welcome back Mitch & Jan! Can't wait to hear about your van-life adventures xo
Thanks!! Van life will definitely be different, but we are excited!!
You could definitely make it cheaper, as you say..
We know it can be done - there are many other TH-camrs who prove that! LOL. Most of the savings would be in choosing a different location and accommodations we would think!
Koh Samui is definitely not a cheap city. It‘s all tourism. Oh, and that unused space in the condo is usually for a Buddhist altar, or if there‘s an older person in your family, say, grandma or grandpa, they could sleep there as they might not be able to go upstairs anymore (that‘s what my family would do, anyway).
Samui is definitely touristy... Very interesting info about the space in the condo!! Ours was the only one in the complex with that space. Our neighbours did not have it. It was a very nice yoga spot, but having an alter there would be perfect. Thank you for the insight!
Living in style there. Welcome home.
Thank you! We seem to have forgotten to bring some of the warm weather back with us!! LOL
A lot of people don't know about the sim card "hack". Airport sim prices are always so inflated and the ones that are offered in 7-11 are only 199 thb for 1 month and 30 GB. Glad you mentioned it.
We will definitely be waiting until we leave the airport in the future. We still found SIM cards so much more affordable than Canadian cell phones, so this time around we felt more comfortable having SIMS as soon as we landed, but we feel more seasoned now (LOL) and confident that we can live without a SIM card until we get out of the airport! 😂
@@mitchandjan Being from Toronto myself, Canadian cell phone plans still strike fear in me lol. We also made the mistake of buying a sim card at the airport the first time we came. Its almost like there is a fear of leaving without getting one, but we saw someone else mention it and it was such a money saver!
Regarding rural Thailand prices on some have gone up x10 on brand name decadent items like an ice cream bar and local grown produce not much increase. Exchange about the same depending what month you pick 😅 Interesting times indeed
Yes, we didn't buy, eat or drink any imported decadent items (except for some bottles of wine) or our budget would have been much higher for sure! Accommodations seem to be the only major fluctuation depending on time of year. Flights and accommodations were much higher in February for example. Definitely interesting times!!
For thai newbies on one month i think you did fine 👍 I am from edmonton moving to Thailand and numbers are comfortable around $2,500 after you figure it all out for finding good thai prices. That said Canada medical and safety nets are good and not in thailand so you need your rainy day account if your giving up canadian residency. For myself, It really comes down to what country you pick and roll the dice and be happy 😊
Haha! Thanks! You definitely have a great attitude about living and where you live! Also, yes, we could surely live for less, especially once not paying Airbnb prices etc. We were quite happy with this budget for the month based on where we were and what we did. We just wanted to point out that Thailand isn't always the bargain that people rave about. We cannot imagine surviving on $800 USD a month like some people do! You must be so excited to move to Thailand!! Good luck!! Cheers! 🥂
Looking good!!!...Back to Home in Ontario...Looking good.... not that inexpensive for Thailand ...Thanks for taking us with you!!!
Thank you! Thanks for always coming along and watching! Ontario here we come! Cheers 🥂
Welcome back to Canada! Thanks for the cost breakdown of your trip in Koi Samui. Slightly shocked about the costs. There is this perception that Thailand is super affordable. You helped demystify this perception. Looking forward to your vanlife videos.
Thank you!! We are happy (but also a little cold) to be back! We were a bit shocked as well by prices. As we said, surely you can live very affordably in Thailand - other people do, but what are your accommodations like? How much "street food" are you eating? (because its mostly not healthy, even though its delicious!). We just wanted to point out the other side of things, although for the experience, it is still an extremely affordable place to visit, but there is no way we are living on $1000 a month or less as other people do! LOL. Cheers! (Writing to you from the van!!) 🥂
Cost in south east asia cannot be kept low artificially for long. Even vietnam cannot hold on for long. We need to import, after the start of the ukraine war, everything started to increase. Then the USA raised the interest rate above 5%. This caused our currencies to depreciate in asia.
You mean democrats raised the interest rates 🤔
Definitely! Also, it is very much tourists like us that also cause prices to be driven up we're sure.
I think there is a caveat to your cost of living, in that you were staying in one off the top tourist destination in SE Asia. I think your cost would be less in Hua Min or Chiang Mai etc.
Samui is the more expensive places in Thailand to stay at.
We definitely understand that! We will definitely be back and Chiang Mai is high on our list, so it will be interesting to see the difference. We recognize that Samui is a very touristy destination as well and just wanted to point that out to people. Thailand is still very affordable, but to be a pure bargain, you have to do things much differently than we did!
Welcome back to Canada! Looks like much nicer weather in ON than here in NS! We just got back from Lagos and are missing the sun. Your expenses for Thailand surprised me as well….seems similar to here. I don’t know if I could eat out for an entire month though. We’re looking forward to vanlife videos as it seems that may be on the horizon for us. Cheers!🍷
Thanks Lori and welcome back to you as well!! Isn't the sun in Lagos amazing?!! We are heading down east in July - so we also hope it warms up there! LOL. We are definitely looking at returning back to Europe next winter. Prices are just as affordable as Thailand for the way we live. We do NOT recommend eating out for an entire month....especially with so much rice and noodles!! LOL We are excited to get going with Vanlife too (as I type this from the van LOL). Thanks for always following along! Cheers! 🥂
If you need any info on things to do and see in NS just let me know….I think we’ve been down every road in this beautiful place! 😂
I was a bit surprised by the cost in Thailand too but overall it is no more than staying in Canada and way better experiences. I hope you make your way down to this area in your travels. Please please please let me know if you do! I would love to have you for dinner and chat all about travel! ❤
Its definitely still cheaper than Canada and likely other areas (like Chiang Mai) in Thailand are more affordable. Samui is pretty touristy/full of expats for sure. We will be down in Southern Ontario a few times for sure! We will definitely let you know and plan a dinner night ❤️
Hi sir, just a quick question. I have only given name as Syed Razi Faheem on my passport but no surname. When i applied the E Visa for vietnam, i typed Syed Razi in given name and Faheem in surname. Now my name on visa is Faheem Syed Razi. And my name on passport and airline tickets is Syed Razi Faheem. Will that be an issue at checking in or immigration from the point i am flying ? Thank you so much in advance 😊
Hello! Although we cannot guarantee anything, we can certainly tell you that we were also concerned when we received our visas and our surname was first, followed by our given names, exactly as you describe. Our visas indicated "Full Name:" with our surnames first. Although, your case is slightly different, if the visa was approved, you are in all likelihood just fine. They are reviewing your passport when they look at your application, so if you have received an approved evisa, I am sure you are fine. In our experience, when we arrived at immigration, they did not even ask for Jan's evisa, so we assume everything is linked in their system once they scan your passport. Hope this helps!! This seemingly simple application, just isn't always as straight forward as one would hope. Cheers!
Thanks for the reply, you are a star. My only concern is the very first immigration and boarding from point A, contacted airlines, but it wasnt any help.
@mitchandjan last question and i will be out of your hair, So your passport and ticket names matched but only visa names were reversed, right ?
@@razifaheem1512as long as you have a the approved evisa in hand with your name and passport number on it, I’m sure you will have no issue!!
@@razifaheem1512yes! That is correct!
Super information. We'll be on a cruise ship and will be completing this process shortly. I believe, but am not certain, that the application window opens six months before your intended arrival. No need to wait until the last minute. I've also seen it recommended by RCCL that your selected entry date should be a couple days prior to your actual arrival. Start the 30 day clock a bit early; there's no harm and it protects everyone from an itinerary change.
Thank you so much and we agree - earlier is much better!! Cheers! 🥂
Never did that . Next time. Koh Samui is a great hang out place.
It was a great day out for sure!! Samui is a great spot for relaxing and hanging out!
Where in Koh Sumui did you stay in for your duration of the trip.
We stayed near Fisherman’s Village (about a 10 min walk). Saturday’s video will have an Airbnb tour and link! Cheers! 🥂
Wow! So beautiful! We enjoyed Thailand so much that we are planning to return in a couple of months. Such a great place! We're really impressed that you are out in 40 °C weather 🥵🥵🥵
It is a great place. We will definitely return to explore more of Thailand! It was either get out in the 40° weather or spend a month inside! lol.

Hi guys not sure if I missed it what month and how long were you in Lagos? I’m looking for somewhere to go in January after I depart Scotland that will be a little warmer than Scotland.
Hello! We were in Lagos in December, for a whole month. We would definitely go to the south of Portugal in January (in fact we may go back this coming January), temps are in the mid to high teens, but best of all is the beautiful sun! It will definitely be warmer, drier and sunnier than Scotland! Thanks for watching! Cheers! 🥂
