Going Used - How far will a USED IONIQ 5 go at 70mph? | Motorway Range Test
My name's Stu and thanks for tuning into my video.
This week, I dive into my 'Going used' series, picking out great used EVs which at the time of publishing this video are priced perfectly for most consumers to indulge.
However, there's a lot of scepticism of the longevity of battery/motor technology and whether it can survive longer than we anticipate. In this 'Going Used' series, I intent to test these aging EVs and pick out any issues or point up where they're doing things right.
In this video I look at the Ioniq 5, Hyundai's first leap into 800v architecture and their first major ground up electric vehicle since the integration of an electronic drive chain in the Kona.
Specifically, after 2 years of degradation, is this Ioniq 5 still able to offer a great range if any at all?

No need to “test real world” because no one drives outside of the “real world.” No need to drive just do math. 77 X 3.8, 77 X 4.1, etc. What needs to be determined is the miles/kilometers per mile at a speed. I elect to use 64 mph. Wind, terrain, electric/HVAC systems drain adjustment, means a practical range of 3 hours, close to 200 miles as I care not to go below 15% if possible. 2022 Ioniq 5 SE RWD long range battery size.
Hi Stuart, on average what do you charge this to? I’ve got the se standard and seen it’s recommended to charge to 80% so on the app I have set the limit to 80 but it continues to charge to 100% and I can’t set a limit on the cars entertainment system either.
Thanks for not just going in the outer lane the whole time like most EV range tests 😂
Great review, my wife and myself really like the MG4, we have been looking at getting the Trophy. I just have to pass my driving test :)
what type of battery is installed in this car?
i've found LiNMC, thanks
I’m thinking of getting the exact same model but wanted to know if it’s a better option to go for than the AWD?
Acceleration is perfectly adequate (0-100km/h in 5.9 seconds). The ride in the snow is also very good (the engine is on the rear axle and the battery loads the car evenly, the software works well too), definitely better than a petrol rear-wheeler which has the engine in the front and a lightweight rear. My average consumption is 15.2 kW/100km including winter, summer and motorway driving at 130 km/h. I have a practical range of 500km in summer and 350km in winter. In winter I park the car on the street (central Europe), so I drive out with a cold battery. AWD has the advantage of more acceleration, more braking when recuperating (2 motors instead of one) and has better audio. The downside of AWD is higher consumption and higher price.
Thanks for the reply - because you’ve been living with the RWD what would you choose between a RWD 23plate 1500 miles 33k or AWD 72plate 4000 32k?
@@tiptoe531 I would choose AWD if you prefer better sound system, or you live in cold climate country, otherwise I would choose RWD.
@@Andrew-CZ I have more question and it's regarding the regen braking. Do you get less regen on the RWD?
@@tiptoe531 Yes, I have less regen braking power (because RWD has only 1 motor). But it is absolutely ok. I use brake pedal only 2-3x per day.
Quite useful. One commenter managed almost 7 m/kWh which is a real peak to achieve. 4 miles/kWh seems do-able in Model 3, Ioniq, etc, so that’s the starter for ten. I think permitting our electricity prices to domestic properties, to be susceptible to control and influence of Big Energy Gas & Oil (Big EGO as I refer to them), is a shockingly stupid position for the country to let itself end up. Nuclear is even worse, they extract price guarantees way in excess of present-day, like double, in order to even want to get into a bid for building a nuclear power plant. It’s absolutely standard. The more nuclear we have, the more the kWh price heads to £1 a unit. It feels like the government energy strategy is literally written by shareholders of BP. Lastly, I concur about speeds up to 70mph or so, they rip energy out of a battery. My experience is an old Nissan Leaf though, even 70mph it only could last 40 minutes or so, it was in short pathetic. And an unwelcome surprise, as we had 250 miles to travel in a cold night. 9 hours. Kids. No. Did it once. Old diesel, 4.5 hours with a break the length we wanted. Zoe is much better, the bigger the battery, the less this high-drain use damages efficiency. Take care all.
Do you have the new software? What about intrusive LKA? Thanks
Does the back wheels look like they are mounted on a rear axle that is too narrow?
please clean your car
328km with grandpa speeds sheesh, wonder how low it drops with 140km/h
The best video yet well done my man
Bought long range long range MG4 23 plate, ex garage demo and 6 months old. It still has 6 yrs warranty. Love it. I have a ‘dumb’ home charger from a previous EV, and the in-car scheduled (cheap rate) charging was difficult (kept reverting to a different schedule), but trial and error seems to have worked… used CCS at Instavolt recently, which worked at 75kw in sleet. Changed to MG 4 for range, CCS charging facility and price. The drive is very comfortable. The car isn’t brutish looking and I use ECO even on motorways. A really good feature is that if I really accelerate hard (eg, to avoid an issue) it changes to NORMAL to get me out of a bind. The really irritating defult feature is LANE ASSIST - I live near narrow country lanes, and don’t like the ‘wheel grab’ effect, so I have to sit and programme.
Hi Thomas Why is it not stay in ECO mode all the time. Going back normal mode
No one is answering how much it cost to fully charge
Yes agree how much did it cost to fully charge the ev
Great video with real life EV appraisal, content creators like you will help promote EV to more potential EV motorists, well done. We are all EV household as well with a Model 3 SR & Kia E-Niro 64KWh 4+. Wouldn’t/ Couldn’t go back to ICE cars now as we enjoy the instant Torque, silent drivetrain and amazing economy
Recently managed 4.7 miles per KWH over 250 miles (with 40 miles to spare) with my Niro EV 4 (with heat pump), granted I was going slow (56mph) for the fun of it, with all my auto this and that switch on, it's actually quite a relaxing drive :) When I had my diesel, I use to do the same and get 60mpg, when it was normally 47mpg. If you're not in a rush, take it easy and I reckon I'll get well over 300 miles in the summer.
As long as you dont buy the higher speced ones with Emergency Lane Keep Assist, then you are good. Those have led to accidents pulling the steeringwheel insanely hard off the road.
Hi Stu, which model are you driving? Just hoping it is the Excite 51 because that's the model I'm aiming for.
I tried jumpstart but it won't last😅😅
Any EV owner who wants to maximise range won't drive at 70 on the motorway, on road trips I drive on motorway and DC at 60-62 GPS speed in my 40kWh Nissan Leaf, obviously my road trips aren't just on national speed limit roads but on my last 700 mile road trip I averaged 4.8 miles per kWh, if I drove the Zoe like that I'd expect it to be more economical than my Leaf.
There's a lot of external unpainted plastic trim on these cars. Hence I'm wondering how they're holding up over time, have they discoloured/lightened? I like gloss black cars but if the external plastics discolours/lightens over time I think it would look worse on a gloss black car versus a white or any other colour car. Also is the type of plastic on the front different from the plastic on the doors/sides which looks a bit lighter(?) Another thing I'm wondering is if rear passengers are able to slide their feet under the front seats? Thanks for these tests, they are really useful for potential buyers.
All very well, but, how many years would you expect to hve in service 10 yrs? And then a second hand one how many yrs would one get out of one?
2018 M3LR RWD 104XXX miles on 04/18/24 I started with 90% SOC drove 162 miles @ 75MPH on interstate.. 82 miles there and 82 back so any elevation change is negated returned home with 21% SOC I used FSD beta and streaming media. no climate control as outside temp was 68F. daytime so no lights
It’s ok, but it blows my mind why someone would buy one instead of a Model 3.
For me it’s the 20k difference - I’m in Australia so maybe it’s different elsewhere
Just bought this device for my MG4 and the touch screen is out of sync. I press on one icon and end up selecting the icon next door... Ive contacted one car about returning the device, hopefully we can reach a positive outcome.
Great video, with all the essential information, and a nice analysis overall. The cost is a joke, I'd have to do 90+mph on a petrol to approximate that price. Charge point prices are a ripoff, making EVs more expensive than anything but gas guzzlers
I agree EV chargers are too expensive, I tend to use a Tesla charger for around 35p per KW, with home charging, I managed a 500 round trip for £47, when I did this in my diesel, it would cost me close to £70, so I'm finding 'generally' my EV is cheaper, if you stick to cheap home charging, it's MUCH cheaper than any ICE vehicle.
Yikes, that is less than 1/2 what my 4-cylinder car can do.
I love our ZE50. It's the 110, so we see more miles per kWh than the 135. It's quite capable of driving from Swanage to Grimsby without having to recharge, carrying 2 adults plus luggage - and my mobility buggy neatly in the boot space without having to fold the rear seats. (I made a video of that.) Sure, it has a few deficiencies, but not enough to make me want to buy a different car.
I bought our ZE50 110 with 250 miles on the clock in 2021. After 3 years, I still enjoy driving it. It's also more economical on battery than the 135. I'm seeing an annual average of more than 5.3 miles per kilowatt hour; a range of 275 miles or more. In Summer I'm seeing over 300 miles on long runs with 2 people and holiday luggage. On motorways at average traffic speeds I see at least 4.8 miles per kilowatt hour in Spring. I don't like the facts that we have no indication of recharging speeds, and we don't have Car Play. Renault Customer Services have been exemplary, but the dealer keeps trying to persuade me to downgrade to a hybrid. They must be desperately trying to shift those frankenkars before it's too late!
Great video. I have recently upgraded my Gen 1 Zoe to a ZE50 Iconic and it is a totally different beast altogether. It's a great car that is very energy efficient and comfortable to drive as well. With the CCS and the increased range it is a car I shall be sticking with for many years before I even think of changing it.
Why would you change the excellent Model3 for this EV with such a cheap plastic interior?
Annoying infotainment can’t even connect phone without some app
Hi Australia here 0.69 Pounds per kWh is AUD1.33 per kWh!!!!! This is insane! Crazy! Why is it so expensive?
Wow - so many scratches and manufacturing defects! I was considering getting one, but not any more! Thanks for the video.
May I know what is that narrow tunnel you were driving through at the end of the video? Looks interesting
That’s the train that takes you under the English channel…
Hi, I'm trying to buy new one 2024 MG MG4ev, is this the manufacturing issue in all or is it after using for a while. Good thing to mention here, I'll definitely double check on this before purchasing it.
I never noticed before but the runway looks hilly?!
on a side note, did you have to do anything with the headlights?
🤘 'PromoSM'
I live in Thailand and they’ve recently started building the MG4 here including the batteries. I will test drive one soon. Thanks for your review.
What's your software version, I've a st sr and i can't see outside temperature on this multimedia screen.🤔
Really good thanks this video was just what I needed as I'm looking for an EV that'll do a 150mile trip between Edinburgh and Inverness. My Leaf is a good car but needs charged twice on the way north and once on the way south. Used to be OK but recently the volume of Ev's trying to use the A9's limited number of rapid chargers is making the Leaf impractical for this journey. Looks like the Niro wil make it if charged to 100% with about 50 miles to spare. And of course a lot of the A9 is a 60 MPH limit so maybe even easier.
is there a back camera, I did not notice it!
Do you still have to lease the battery from Renault? Or you own it when buying the Zoe ?
I’ve literally just bought one yesterday. I’m pretty impressed by the range.
So I assume with this you will still get scratches on the these new covers but when you take them off the allows will be as new ? Or will they actually protect better ?
the last time i watch one of your terrible videos.range range range
