  • Hey guys and thanks for tuning in this week.
    Today, I take the Kia Niro-EV 2 on the Southwest-70 range test. This one's going to be a belter as I include a charging session and of course the range test which encounters all the conditions I normally hope to avoid like heavy rain, wet roads and road closures. However, I do manage to maintain great test conditions and finish with some interesting numbers you won't want to miss.
    Thanks for tuning in and supporting my channel.

    Recently managed 4.7 miles per KWH over 250 miles (with 40 miles to spare) with my Niro EV 4 (with heat pump), granted I was going slow (56mph) for the fun of it, with all my auto this and that switch on, it's actually quite a relaxing drive :)
    When I had my diesel, I use to do the same and get 60mpg, when it was normally 47mpg.
    If you're not in a rush, take it easy and I reckon I'll get well over 300 miles in the summer.

    My experience with my eNiro reflects your results almost exactly. Over 6000 miles in the first year I’m averaging 4.1 miles per KWh, on a motorway run I’m getting pretty much what you achieved. The charging curve is not as good as more modern vehicles, but the real issue is the price now Tesla have dropped their prices. A model 3 is about the same price at a 4+ and model Y only slightly more and you get the Super Charger network. There’s some second hand bargains coming soon.

      That’s great our numbers are on the same length from an owner. I agree, Tesla have made it incredibly competitive but in my opinion this is desperately needed. The market needs looking at in terms of pricing especially with MG4 starting at 26k. Kia EV6 starts at £42k on an 800v system and that really questions the Niro pricing for me.

      Agreed. I was seriously considering a NIRO EV for my next purchase, but with Tesla's price drop, i don't think I can justify it. This was, of course, part of Tesla's plan.They are still quite profitable while undercutting the EV competition on price.

    Thanks for this interesting review of the new Niro EV...the weather in the UK is much as a remember it and pretty much the same as it is today here in South West France. We’ve had our e-Niro since March 2019, one of the first batch to arrive here. Just had the 75,000 km service done this week in Niort. It’s been great, apart from the 12v battery which needed replacing after 3 years, it was never up to the job. The build quality is as good as anything German, Swedish or Japanese I’ve owned during 40 + years of driving and despite the rough and tumble it gets in our rural life the interior is holding up well. Our winter/summer efficiency average is 14.4 kWh/100 km, so 4.3 miles/kWh. Even on a winter trip to Germany last winter... 2,200 km of autoroute/autobahn driving we were seeing about 18.5 kWh/100 km, about the same as you were seeing at similar speeds. So is your daily drive the MG4 but you get to try different cars? Thanks for all your reviews, the MG4 looks a game changer coming in under £30K. It is also getting great reviews here in France.

    • @stuart_thomas
      @stuart_thomas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for tuning in and your comments it’s greatly appreciated from an owner’s prospective. It’s very efficient indeed and although I think the numbers aren’t quite accurate on the drivers display it’s more efficient than most EVs out there and does have a great build quality. I know a few Niro EV drivers who are over the moon and it’s great to see how well received it is in France too.
      My issue is the pricing. It’s too high. MG4 from 26k and EV6 from 42k on 800v architecture. I think the Niro should be topping out mid-late 30s and with a heat pump as standard.
      Thanks again for your input I know you comment on most of my videos and really appreciate it 👍

      @@stuart_thomas Thanks Stuart. This morning I did a run to Poitiers railway station and back. This is 128 km round trip of mostly dual carriageway driving with the last few km in urban Poitiers and the first 10 km from home on rural roads getting over to the N10. Temperature was 7c with very strong cross winds and lots of rain. On the N10 I drive mostly between 100 to 110 kph, though there are restricted sections at 90kph. Round trip efficiency was 17.8 kWh/100 km, so 3.48 miles/kWh. The heater was on all the way and set to 20c. The question of FWD/RWD efficiency is an interesting one for EVs as it seems a FWD car can capture more kinetic energy on braking. Did I send you a link to my review of 2022 with the car? @@stuart_thomas There is a high correlation between EV ownership and solar ownership. With an EV you get to think about kW hours I guess and while saving a fortune on not having to buy fossil fuels you notice your electricity bill go up.
      I had 8 solar panels installed on our barn roof here two months after getting the car in 2019. Last year we added another 3 panels which was a bit of an experiment, hanging them on the wall of the barn with a 10 degree tilt. This is working out really well and catching the low summer sunshine. This year with the 11 panels I should get close to 3,000 kWh. I have done a couple of videos on the solar as I bought the panels and inverters myself and got a friend to install them. He’s a builder who is also a qualified electrician and used to working on roofs. He learned how to install solar to offset the costs of running his swimming pool at home. I'd confirm these numbers also - 45kw is a normal charge on DC - helps if you pre-condition which causes it to charge higher (50-60kw) for the first 20-50% of the battery. Rarely see anything above 50kw higher into the battery. At 80% it drops right down.

My Leaf is a good car but needs charged twice on the way north and once on the way south. Used to be OK but recently the volume of Ev's trying to use the A9's limited number of rapid chargers is making the Leaf impractical for this journey. Having watched many of these range tests and charging tests, I would recommend that you finish your charge at 80% if you can, and charge somewhere else when your state of charge gets below 50% - you'll find that the "total time to charge" is much less.
      If you have a home-charger I'd recommend only charging to 100% overnight just before a long trip, all your other charging during your trip should be to 80%, the last 20% will always be a very long wait.

    My daughter test drove one of these today. The first thing that hit me was the efficiency. Unfortunately, like this one, it was only the ‘2’. I think she prefers the Renault Megane E-Tech First Edition. Can you quantify what you mean by ‘front wheel drive has less friction’? 🤔

      @stuart_thomas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Renault Megane E-Tech looks a fantastic propersition. Can’t wait to drive it!
      Rear wheel drive gives the car more traction which is great for EVs as there’s more control over the torque hence why all sports cars go for RWD or AWD. FWD doesn’t have as much traction and therefore less friction and you’re not bearing the weight and momentum of the vehicle during the acceleration stage etc
      My experience of FWD EVs is they tend to be more efficient but have drawbacks with things like torque steer

Since then, *no one* has talked about how the two compare: price performance, sales volumes, handling, yadda. I think it could *easily* have been a "Bolt Killer" (the one we're driving now). Interesting Stuart, as I almost bought a Kia Niro but in the end I went for a tesla model 3 SR+ LFP 55kWh car. I also made an efficiency journey in 10C rainy weather on 1st January and got 256 kw/mile down and 232 kw/mile back, giving and overall efficiency of 244 kw/mile or 4.09 miles/kwh. So my car would have used 40.5 kwh for 166 miles or 77% of its battery meaning it is almost 20% more efficient than the Niro!

    • @stuart_thomas

      It’s a good point if you compare it against public charging. However, where EVs excel is how/where you charge. At home I can charge the car for as little as 12p a kWh so that’s roughly £7 to charge the car. I do 95% of my charging at home.
      There are also still lots of free or cheaper charging options like work-based charging and hotels etc.
      If these options weren’t available then it would make it a more challenging option. I also think EVs are better to drive and long term, without carrying both a HV system and ICE system together maintaining the vehicle should be much more affordable

    For me charging speeds and battery capacity are not all that, the fact that so many chargers always seem to be out of order. This means price drop or not, the Tesla SC network wins over everything if you regularly do motorway journeys. You could have a 100kwh battery with amazing efficiency, get to a charger station and find it's not working, or have with Tesla SC that always seems to be working, and you never see them out of action!

    • @stuart_thomas
      @stuart_thomas  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s a good point. Charging is getting better though and my nearest big city, Bristol has so many now and most are always up and running. I do believe a lot of the ‘broken’ issues is down to parts availability to fix them. Tesla do have chargers down it’s just never publicly complained about as there’s always at least 8 stalls and the pass-through rate is quicker than anywhere else as even with cold batteries they will still charge quickly.
      It will get better as technology gets more reliable and operators get more responsible. The uptake in EVs will push this

    • @stuart_thomas
      @stuart_thomas  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Russ, thanks for tuning in and the info. That’s really interesting and a big discrepancy. Most cars seem to be 1 or 2 out. This one depending on the app I use was 1 and 2. What wheel size do you have? I’m not 100% sure if the full range has the same wheel size etc
      In terms of testing EVs if it’s less than 2 I won’t bother mentioning as its minimal impact. Even when I use cruise control it’s dipping below the set speed all the time.
      It’s a tough one as the consumer always drives by the car indicated speed and that reflects in the efficiencies. But good to know!

    Great informative video. Excellent car but charge speed simply not good enough relative to the price in 2023,let alone 3-5 years time when you want to change, it will look horrendously out of date (charge speed wise). Tesla really putting downward pressure on pricing so Kia/Hyundai will have to quietly discount to remain competitive. New Kona just released but they have not revealed the charge speed so I suspect will be sub 100kW like the Niro. We don’t need 800v architecture but a speed of 120-150kW would be perfect. And would match most other competitors at this price point or less.

    Kia needs to drop its Niro prices to compete with Tesla. The Niro EV Wave (higher trim) is the closest comparison to Tesla's Model Y, but after the full $7500 tax credit (which the Model Y qualifies for) it's cheaper than the Kia. The Model Y gets 279 miles vs the Kia's 253. It has 20 cubic feet more cargo volume, and it's AWD standard (Kia is only FWD). It's still cheaper than the Niro (after tax credit) if you opt for the Model Y Long Range, which gets 330 miles.

    Pretty rubbish really, to get a full battery you need to charge for an hour and a half on a 50 kw ( common) rapid charger at least.
    That gives a range of 205 miles.
    My much larger 15 year old Mercedes E Class Diesel, gets well over 650 miles at 70 mph ( well over 3 times the range) and it takes 5 minutes to refill the tank afterwards. This is not progress, that is why electric vehicles will struggle badly to take the car market and why used EV prices are dropping like a stone. Also a large number of dealers have got a stocking ban on EV's because they are losing so much money on EV inventories. Don't go on about bladder range either, it takes 5 minutes to go to the lavatory and you can eat, drink and rest in the passenger seat, whilst your driving spouse shares the driving, whilst an EV takes hours cumulatively charging on long journeys leading to charge anxiety and much slower journey times. I have had an EV for 7 years and on long journeys I have learnt my lesson and don't do them in the EV, instead it is used within it's tethered home charger range, where it works.
