  • Hey guys and thanks for tuning in.
    Join me in todays video….The MG4 isn’t a one trick pony and this week the electric hatchback becomes hauler and power supply as we spend an the day at the Forest of Dean.
    Being capable of V2L, MG4 powers Mother’s Day and provides a memorable occasion for the family.
    I also examine the efficiencies of the vehicle as we make an 80-mile trek driving A and B roads around the forest and examine our energy usage.
    Thanks for tuning in

    V2L enable : rather than hitting the brake peddle - just press down on the drivers seat occupancy sensor

    This is THE perfect video for me! I live a spitting distance away from Mallards Pike and commute to Barnwood/Coopers Edge - You've basically given the exact figures I'm looking for. I'm pretty sure you could gain a few kWh simply by driving between Parkend and Blakeney! Sat in my workmate's Long Range SE today, but will be looking at one at Cinderford MG tomorrow, just so that I can fit the pram in the boot to see.

    V2L is a massive advantage for EV's and on a brilliant budget friendly car like the MG4 is perfect. Got me wanting to visit the Forest of Dean now! Looks gorgeous!

    Mallards pike ? The Forest of Dean and Wye Valley is a favourite area , although I’m a long way away , my mother grew up in Lydney, went to college in Cinderford , I have friends in Beachley . I don’t get down there as often as I would like .

      Hi Mark, thanks for tuning in. Unfortunately, the V2L cable I have is unavailable to buy now but there are versions of it on eBay for around £90. I’ve had mine for over 4 months but there seems to be a few to choose from. Just check for max output. Mine’s 2.2kWh but there’s others higher.

    • @stuart_thomas
      @stuart_thomas  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Niels.
      It was either an MG4 or a second hand leaf or Zoe and I didn’t want them. MGZS was out of my price bracket. We already have a Tesla M3 so this was to replace a 7-seater VW diesel which we never drive anywhere. We sold that when used prices were through the roof and MG4 just seem to be released at the same time… rest is history as they say. Glad I chose it, most of its close competitors like ID.3 and Niro EV, although nice, I couldn’t justify the price tag.

    Nice vid, thanks. Stuart, what's the fastest charge rate you've seen on the SE LFP battery? There's talk on an MG4 forum that it won't go beyond 80-something

    • @stuart_thomas
      @stuart_thomas  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Rikkola and thanks for tuning in. I think 90 is the ceiling. I’ve done more than 5 ultra fast charges now and 88kW was the highest and I through anything to heat those cells up at it!
      Having seen Bjorn test it in 30c temps in Thailand I can’t see it breaking 90kW…. Of course I’ll always try😉
      I think it’s restricted by software.

    The fact that this £25K car can do this and a Tesla can’t is really silly. V2L I can see having som many use cases for long days out or power cuts, it’s great it support it!

  • @rachaelgillan1934
    @rachaelgillan1934 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hello :) when you start at 100% it says 160 miles range- is it not supposed to be 218 full charge? I know this changes I’d say you’re on the motorway etc, but at the start should it not always be 218? I’m seriously considering buying an mg4 (first ever electric car) excited but nervous so doing loads of research! And your vids have been so helpful!

    • @stuart_thomas
      @stuart_thomas  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Rachel, thanks for tuning in. 218 is the WLTP range for summer conditions. There’s also a WLTP for winter as well, which is realistically for the SE spec here around 150 miles at zero degrees Celsius (in my experience). The range on the drivers binnacle will always fluctuate based on previous driving, how it’s been charged etc and what the temperatures are. Since we started creeping into double digit temperatures my car predicts 180/190 and I expect it to exceed the 218 in summer by a little. Funnily enough after this trip in the video based on my driving styles that day (much slower than normal) the next day my car was predicting I could achieve an extra 20 miles. If you don’t commute over 100 miles a day and can charge at home then I’d strongly recommend this spec of MG4, if you don’t tick both those boxes the long range or Trophy spec might be better suited. The long range/trophy model should get you 200 miles on a full charge in winter and north of that in the warmer months. It’s worth mentioning, the spec I have in this video uses a different battery chemistry which is more robust with lower cell voltage. This means you can charge it to 100% regularly. The larger battery models, charging about 80/90% is suggested for long trips. I hope this helps

      @@stuart_thomas thank you so sooo much for your help! I don’t commute over 100 per day, think we will go for it but such a scary desicion! And the £1600 for a charging point at home (we have a complicated fit!)

    • @stuart_thomas
      @stuart_thomas  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s a shame the government don’t help out like they did when we had ours fitted. We also had a complicated installation, but it’s an investment for the future so the cost I think it’s worth it. It may pay to see if you can get grants to assist?

    When you have V2L operating and sitting at the table, could someone just jump into your car and drive off? The proximity key is close enough right?

    • @stuart_thomas
      @stuart_thomas  ปีที่แล้ว

      Im sure I locked the vehicle but I can’t be 100% sure. If it wasn’t locked, of course someone could enter the vehicle. The car knows as soon as you’re inside if the key is on your person or not and it will not be drivable unless you’re present so I’d imagine for someone to drive off would be highly unlikely
