  • Thanks for tuning in this week.
    Tesla produce some of the most energy efficient electric vehicles. In this video, I range test the Model 3 Long Range Rear Wheel Drive to see just how far it can go at 70mph on my Southwest 70 Motorway range test.
    This model 3 is brand new, so it will be great to benchmark its real world range.
    If you enjoy the video please consider liking and subscribing to the channel to help push this real world data to the rest of the TH-cam community.
    Thanks for watching

    GREAT Video! You may have saved me from making a terrible mistake. The "advertised" range on the Tesla Model 3 LR RWD is 394 miles; from 100% to 1% charge, you got 258 miles, or about 3/4 the advertised range. I've seen reports of Tesla owners suing Tesla for false advertising on their range, but I didn't know it was THIS BAD!
    I've had decades of experience, all with ICE vehicles, and was considering my first battery EV. I suspect I would have been monumentally disappointed. Thanks again for your excellent posting!

    on 04/18/24 I started with 90% SOC drove 162 miles @ 75MPH on interstate..
    82 miles there and 82 back so any elevation change is negated
    returned home with 21% SOC
    I used FSD beta and streaming media. no climate control as outside temp was 68F. daytime so no lights

      It’s fair to say with some battery preconditioning and a little more air in the tyres I may have got an extra 15 miles. Outdoor temperature has a lot to do with this, but for most, you will exceed this distance as this is a worst case scenario at 70mph.

    Tyre pressures looked a bit down for the whole trip and that will definitely affect range. Tesla's are supposed to be 42 psi when cold and yours were down at 37 ish so more than 10% under-inflated and even after 100 miles were still showing a low warning. Would be really interesting to do that again with them 42 cold which takes them up to more like 44 when warmed up.

      @stuart_thomas We are very well thank you, Yes, our first EV, so didn't really know what to expect, even though i have watched all your videos and others before i made the decision, (have now done 3000 km, old hands now, no!
      We are now in Malaga for christmas and new year) but have to say so far, as you say, been a breeze, have found the predictions of the car with the battery percentage to be pretty accurate, although have found to ONLY note the prediction when first charged as in the journey it rises, for some reason, it seems by 15% to 20% or so and then reduces rather quickly to arrive at what it said in the begining (a bug i think).
      We have only had one scare, well my wife really, as i had watched your vids and others, who had driven the old model past 0% and until the car completly stopped, so was pretty (ISH confidant). Going from Almaraz supercharger in Spain to Figuiera da Foz in Portugal the car said we would arrive with 16%, but on the journey I remembered that i had seen a supercharger virtually on the route near ish to Figuiera da foz, on the supercharger map on my computer, so though why not charge there and arrive in Figuiera with probably 90%, but haven't read the manual (yes I know) so didn't know how to add a stop in the journey to the navigation and didn't want to mess with it while driving and too lazy to stop 🙄 so asked my wife to look for the supercharger on her app and send it to the car. She did that, but obviously didn't pick a supercharger and when we arrived at the point, no supercharger and 12%, in fact no nothing so she and I have no idea what she selected (now we know you have to search with "tesla supercharger" to make sure it is a supercharger and to make sure it says tesla supercharger when you select it)
      Anyway I found the supercharger and car said we would arrive with 3% so I said lets go, Ana, my wife, was definately a bit nervious, we arrived with 2% having driven 435 km (270.3 miles) in total from Almaraz and the car saying we had another 15 km (9.3 miles) to zero. So a true range of 450 km (279.6 miles) and this was done with outside temperatures all the way at 4 to 5ºC (39 to41° Fahrenheit) so I am pretty certain in summer here we would get at least 500 km (310.7 miles).
      I did a quick calc of costs from my villa in Valencia using only tesla superchargers and so far the real cost of using the superchargers has been just over 5 euro cents per km and just over 7.2 km (4.5 miles) per KWH thats with sentry on and just dividing tesla supercharger charges with the km done. Charging at home has so far worked out at about 2.2 euro cents per km, without me looking for any special EV electricity tarriffs for car which i know do exist here in Spain, next thing for me to investigate, but so far super stoked with the costs and car.
      Is the car perfect nope, personally I actually prefer the selection of the forward and reverse on the screen, super simple.
      Stalks for indicators, ok you do get used to them and I now do not find them a problem at all, but yep! I would still prefer a stalk for this.
      Heard many people complain about tesla vision, automatic wipers and lights etc, generally I have found they actually work quite well, not perfectly yet, but I still have all on auto. I only find that occasionally i have to press the wiper button on the steering wheel I find this far better, actually, than having to constantly adjust the speed of the wipers with my diesel car and now I don't even think about it.
      Auto lights, on a motorway or main road work well, but find on a twisty minor road with no lighting at night if the signs are angled in a certain way this makes the car dip its lights, but again a quick press of the button on the wheel sorts it, still much better than constantly having to dip and undip my lights on my diesel car.
      Tesla vision for the reversing etc, don't find it a problem, now know, how far can reverse and position using the cameras, just meant AT FIRST had to experiment, by getting out and checking with where i was in relation to the wall, post, kerb etc, but i did that when I first got my diesel car and was using its sensors. this is much better and certain, but have to say do not really take any notice of the distance the car says, although seems pretty accurate.
      So, so far very happy with the car, so much better than the old model i test drove some 3 times before I ordering this. Many people ask about the car when we stop and all love the colour ( the new ultra red with white interior), some even thought it was a ferrari, 🤣🤣🤣.
      Anyway hope you found this interesting,
      Have a great christmas
      Ana and ian

      @@Ian_Woods I’m so pleased to hear you’re nailing EV life. Tesla is a great way to dip your foot in with the best of everything tech which is what makes it work. Tesla is pretty good at accurately gestimating range and is very transparent with small alterations to it. Still yet to try the new 3 but we have a new model y replacing our current 3 next week. Ultra red looks amazing, nice choice with white interior. I’ve been testing quite a few EVs in the last few months. I have an Audi etron 55 sportsback black at the moment and I can’t tell you how much this brand hasn’t advanced in the last 10 years since I last owned one. I had a bmw ix last week and it was as advanced as any EV with the exception of Tesla. Just shows you how Tesla have the EV game in their pocket. You’ll have a great experience and time with it so enjoy!

    • @stuart_thomas
      @stuart_thomas  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Adam, great question. I charged at home on on intelligent octopus. This gives allows me to charge at 7.5p p/kWh from 0-100% in one go. At the worst case charging 0-100% based on a 75kWh battery is roughly £5.62.
      This is on a 7kW wall charger which is roughly 10 hours, but that is 0-100% which is highly unlikely scenario

    How could anyone possibly have range anxiety leaving the house with 100%, knowing they can motorway drive for 4+ hours in winter non-stop. I can't imagine more than 3 hours (down to 20%) with out a 15 min stop (which could get you back up to 90%)

    • @Andrew-CZ
      @Andrew-CZ 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Acceleration is perfectly adequate (0-100km/h in 5.9 seconds). The ride in the snow is also very good (the engine is on the rear axle and the battery loads the car evenly, the software works well too), definitely better than a petrol rear-wheeler which has the engine in the front and a lightweight rear. My average consumption is 15.2 kW/100km including winter, summer and motorway driving at 130 km/h. I have a practical range of 500km in summer and 350km in winter. In winter I park the car on the street (central Europe), so I drive out with a cold battery. AWD has the advantage of more acceleration, more braking when recuperating (2 motors instead of one) and has better audio. The downside of AWD is higher consumption and higher price.

    What differences does it have to the sr+ except the battery? In some videos they said it has the fog Lights and ambient foot lights.
    Any details? Also how much kw does the engine produce and what is the 0-60?
    Thanks in advance

    • @stuart_thomas
      @stuart_thomas  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Simon, the LR uses a more energy dense battery chemistry so it affects the 0~60 (faster). The LR and performance models also get fog lights and the upgraded sound system as standard with extra speakers and a subwoofer in the boot. The LR because of the battery will charge quicker and require less preconditioning for fast charging. I’ve seen 246kw on the LR spec. I believe the SR+ maxes out at 175kw which is still great but takes longer to precondition. If you want the car long term the LFP battery in the SR has at least 3 more life cycles in each cell which should see much less degradation over its life. However, if it’s a lease of you plan to sell on at 3 years then I wouldn’t worry about battery degradation.
