Brother Kenny, had to watch this a second time! Flippers do not break any laws or violate any moral codes! Great point! Oh Kenny, but you have 7000 records... then you commented and said, 'I would feel the same way if I had 20!' You tell him Brother Kenny! What I wanted to give you is a couple ideas for new videos! First idea, where to we put Smooth Jazz? For example, 'Heartstring' by Earl Klugh, classic! Same with 'Breezin' by George Benson. When does Smooth Jazz become New Age? Another good topic to debate. Second idea, International Jazz, I know youve talked about Cal Tjader, Jobim a bit, but lets get into the meat and potatoes of Brazilian Jazz too! For example, Marcos Valle, Deodato, Eliane Elias, Jobim, Flora Purim, Astrid Gilberto, Azymuth, The Ipanemas, etc.etc. Thanks Brother Kenny, Peace and Love!!

Sorry, cannot play & pick 1...can't. 😊 I will mention an early Jazz album sent to me by Jazz-drumming uncle in south Philly. Charles Mingus - CHANGES TWO. Great band, great compositions, great playing, great mix... If you hear Don Pullen's piano playing & wonder "WTH"?!? Watch this Mingus band LIVE AT MONTREUX 1975. It's on youtube. Seeing is believing. 😊

Ya know...IN A SILENT WAY has never floated my boat. I bought BB back in the '70s as I was getting into Jazz/Fusion. Didn't like (get it)...way too dense, too Free for me at that time. Anyway, after 20+ years, I forced myself to "get" BB. Much listening, much reading! Bought a multi-disc set of BB. Something clicked. Love it! This led to Coltrane's ASCENSION & his late period/out stuff.

Nice review! I have both copies as well as an original orange label. I haven't had the time to do a detailed comparison but my initial impressions are the Audio Nautes is the new reference although I am a big fan of all three and the 2xHD has also been very impressive. One note, the 2xHD is missing High Life which is one of my favorite tracks. AudioNautes includes it and has an additional half track alternate cut included (apparently the tape ran out during the live recording) which makes for an interesting listen.

Curious, these albums are jazz masterpieces- however they’re very expensive. I really wonder if it’s worth the investment for those people who don’t have a very robust audio system? - Can you really hear the difference on a decent system that doesn’t cost $10,000..??? I’m open to comments as long as they’re honest …

In my personal opinion $150 records (its actually about $175 when you include tax and shipping) that I mentioned in my video are really not for entry level or lower end systems because they are not capable of revealing the sonic differences from those albums that higher end systems can. I decent analogy is I would not by the best tires money could buy for a 1997 Honda Civic but would for a 2024 Ferrari because that Ferrari was engineered and designed to use those tires...putting those tires on a Honda Civic would simply be a waste of money.

Brother Kenny, loved this video! In fact, I had to watch this a second time to get the nitty gritty of this excellent topic! For me, of course, this was an amazing learning experience. I've been digging Fusion Jazz for a little over forty-five years, and you've been digging both Jazz and Fusion! Yes, I knew about many of the jazz greats, but never really invested in them until just around five years ago. In essence, if I had to choose between my Top Jazz or my Top Fusion album, it would probably be Fusion. What you said toward the end of your video struck a chord with me. It was like 'the album I play and listen to the most during the year'! That hit me and I realized that is so true! The album that you connect with most is your 'Bitches Brew'! I get that! Now I just need to figure out my fav, and I really have to think about this a few more days. As always, Peace and Love my brother!

Those are excellent choices, Kenny, but for me, it would be Love Supreme, but you are right. We all have different tastes that we should respect. I love Miles Davis and as well as I love his earlier stuff. His fusion period was the best for me, which bordered on serious rock, like Jeff Beck. One artist that is highly overlooked, in my opinion, is Jack Dejohnette, and the album by him that I love is amongst many is Cosmic Chicken. He was involved in an earlier group called Compost. Jack Dejohnette can play the piano as well as the drums, and he also plays the bass. It is almost never that his earlier stuff is covered.

    • @kennysaudiophilerecordreviews

Some of those early Dejohnette albums are on the Free Jazz side of the house. Very cool stuff! Another oddity...Norman Connors, maybe more known for some great R&B/Pop albums...has a couple of early Free Jazz/Fusion albums. Very Spiritual, IIRC. I need to revisit those.

Great video, Kenny! I would have also picked Bitches Brew between those two. I was just a teenager when Bitches Brew was released and I bought it mostly because of that cool cover. I had very little understanding of Jazz or Jazz Fusion back then. certainly didn't understand what Miles was doing at all. However, I continued to listen to Bitches Brew many times over the years but it wasn't until about 20 years ago that it clicked with me, as did many of Miles' other albums and I've never listened to it, or his other albums, the same again. I love it but it seems I rarely have time to listen to it in its entirety. I'm one of those freaks who must listen to the whole album. I feel it's disrespectful of the artists and the work that went into making an album to not listen through the way it was intended, and in the order it was intended. Now, whether I would pick Bitches Brew as the greatest Jazz Fusion album of all time? I would have to think more about it. I know the album I have listened to the most over the years is Apocalypse by the Mahavishnu Orchestra. I just love that album because of the fusion classical vibe going on and because it takes me on a spiritual journey. Many has been the time that I have been moved to tears when listening to Apocalypse. Peace!

I still buy new CDs now and then but, I have been buying vinyl and CDs since about 1970 in used record and book stories, thrift stores, garage sales, pawn shops. etc. I picked up 3 CDs from a thrift store a couple of weeks ago for a dollar each. If I love an artist and want to support them, I often buy new ones. On the other hand, when I want to try and explore music that is new to me, I buy used copies.

Kenny, spot on again. Where I would slightly differ is as far as listening is Bitches Brew. It is the beginning of fusion where Miles went electric. I think it was like Bob Dillan when he went electric, it was shocking to some people. Bitches brew has a more free jazz feel to me where Jack Johnson is a concept album and perhaps that is why I favor it slightly. Don't get me wrong, Bitches Brew changed everything for the better in my opinion. Kind of Blue is my favorite classic jazz album. NOW! John Colerain, a love supreme is a masterpiece in my opinion along with my favorite things. Thank you my brother, respect and I will always listen to your opinion. Peace.

I think you're right, being that I would give (Bitches Brew) a slight edge over (A Love Supreme). Although I think (A Love Supreme) may pack a punch, (Bitches Brew) has a variation of punches however, if I had to choose a Jazz album from that era that I would listen to over both of those, it would be John Coltrane album (Favorite Things). The reason being is it comes earlier as an influence on albums like (Bitches Brew) with a superb performance & on point sound for that era. An album from this era that I can't really say is the greatest album of all time to checkout, but gets the job done in the same realms of those albums would be. The Bad Plus album (Suspicious Activity). There's a song on the album called (Lost Of Love) that I'm pretty sure will jump out at you. I'll give you one more recommendation. Billy Bang album (Bang On). I'm sure both will become some of your favorites??? No. I'm sure they'll become part of your vinyl collection. Hahaha 😊👍

I'm one of those who prefer In a Silent Way over Bitches Brew. There's something soothing or comforting, for want of a better word, about In a Silent Way that I never grow tired of.

The album does have a nice mellow vibe compared to other fusion works of Miles Davis

0:16 Kenny, I agree with you on fusion..for me it's Bitches BREW. Still waiting for the one step. The producer of BB desears some credit for its unique Rock jazz handshake. I even hear some of it in Sgt Peppers, the Beatles iconic album. i know miles and the fab four admired each other.....keep rockN brother Kenny

If we're talking best jazz albums, A Love Supreme takes it for me. Although Michael Breckers Pilgrimage is right up there. Also Herbie's The New Standard.

I really like Brecker's solo debut (self-titled)...with "Nothing Personal". Great band on this one, too.

Kenny, the main point is that we listen to music for the sheer joy of it! It is our escape from the trials of daily life, which are mostly caused by man himself. Just as we go to God for His guidance and the peace that He brings; we look to music to calm our spirit...even if we are listening to Jazz Fusion🙂 What I'm trying to convey, and it is what you said, "we can't possibly all agree what the greatest jazz albums are because there are so many". Has Hank Mobley ever made a bad album? How about Brubeck's Time Out. As far as Miles is concerned, one of his best albums was on the Dragon Label (DRLP 90/91) Miles Davis & John Coltrane "Live in Stockholm" (1960) 1985. I love Mobley's Peckin' Time and my favorite Jazz Fusion album, Hancock's Head Hunters🙂 It's fun to discuss and wonderful to share the love we have for music! Thanks, for another great video Kenny and like you say "Praise God and strong love"

Bitches brew is a very special record . All Miles Davis records are great but Bitches is another level , vibe wise it’s top level . I got it for my 16 th birthday and I remember the day in 83 .

Coltrane is #4 on my list behind, Miles - Kind of Blue, Cannonball - Something Else and Herbie's - Maiden Voyage. As far as Fusion, Bitches Brew is at the top but close behind is Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire, Weather Report - Mysterious Traveler and Return to Forever - Hymn Of The Seventh Galaxy.

Some of my earliest Jazz LPs were given to me by my uncle...his neighbor? Pat Martino. My uncle really hooked me up. The 1st Jazz LP I bought with my own coin - BAD BENSON. Bought when I was a long hair Hard Rock guy...the Progressive Rock radio station at that time played 2 tracks from this George Benson album. That's where I heard it...and hadda buy it.

I would give the nod to Miles' Bitches Brew. But as a kid just getting into jazz through jazz fusion in the mid-70s, coming from being a heavy rock fan, I first discovered Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, and Return to Forever. By further investigation of the members of those bands, I found the common denominator, Miles Davis. Miles was just so influential.

Like you, I "discovered" the Big 3 of Jazz Fusion...bought BITCHES BREW because Downbeat called it an early Jazz Fusion classic. Well, color me confused...took me 20+ years before I learned to appreciate it. 😊

Yeah , I was a Hendrix fan and then found out that Miles Davis was a fan of Jimi ? Who is Miles Davis I thought ? Then he made a comeback and I found a copy of the magazine Ebony in the art room at school which had a big interview with Miles . Then he appeared on tv . Then I noticed the similarities between the Bitches Brew cover art and Abraxas by Santana

ellington is different, as they said he was beyond category. its jazz and classical and opera. with miles i love bitches brew but i put jack johnson at the top. it fused rock in to his music better then bitches brew. rock people can listen to jack johnson for awhile, bitches brew wanders too much for them.
