A Quick Look Back, My 1995.5 Audi S6 Avant
While going through some older photos and videos I stumbled upon a few of my old 1995.5 Audi S6 Avant. I bought this car from my long time friend and fellow Quattro Club USA member, Rolf. At the time my intent was not only to daily drive it but to restore it to it's former glory.
Rolf had purchased this car from Kent Anderson at KAR of MN (also my former client and friend) and then extensively maintained the car via Kent's brother Keith (and my friend Chris DeLadi) at Anderson Motorsport in Chanhassen, MN.
Rolf had initially brought the car to me to go through and prepare for sale online. It needed a new radiator at the time and I agreed to do that job while here and wound up "while you're in there" doing a complete timing belt replacement on the car as well. From there it got a serious inside/out top to bottom detail from me as well to get it looking as nice as possible prior to the sale.
Then came the surprise. When all was said and done, my friend Rolf said, "I probably owe you quite a bit for all of the work you've done to the car and I can pay you OR I could offer the car to you at a good price if you'd be interested." Naturally, option B was a no-brainer and the "Dragon Wagon" was adopted into the family as my daily driver. I absolutely loved the utility of it and in fact brought an entire (large) bathroom vanity home in a single trip... the Lowe's fork lift driver laughed when he saw what I intended to load things into but once I was done he went and got a couple of co-workers to share in his disbelief. UrS Avant for the win!
I started restoring the car little by little. All new brake system with new rear calipers, rear brake lines and rotors and pads all around. I had also acquired spare doors in the correct color as a few of them had rust spots where paint had flaked off. I was also planning to repaint the bumpers and likely the front end and blend into doors.
Then the C7 S6 joined the family. My father got the newer S6 and decided he would part with his pearl 93 S4. I could have kept the Avant in hind-sight but I really didn't need three cars for myself so I decided to sell it to my friend Joe for a song... he paid exactly what I had into it. Each time it has sold it's gone UP in price and you'd cry if you knew what I had into it at the time of the photos in this video. ;-)
My friend Kyle would buy it from Joe for another good price although Joe did make some money on that deal. The only sad part is that the huge 3 ring binder containing all the service records for this car were somehow lost during Joe's ownership stint... and he would later pass away unexpectedly so we had no way to know where they might be. Really unfortunate as this was one of the best documented S6 Avants I had ever seen, but even more unfortunate that we'd lose Joe.
Kyle would then sell it to another local guy who in turn sold it to someone in Colorado who owned it for a while and had it up for sale again not long ago. Not sure where she is now... maybe YOU own it? If so, drop me a line! I'd love to keep in touch with whoever owns this car now.
I sold the car back in 2017 if I remember correctly.

If you follow the channel you've likely seen videos of the 1996 Audi A6 2.8 quattro. Well, we've decided to sell that one soon and replace it with this car. The stock ignition coil system on the UrS4 isn't bad but they are by no means inexpensive or easy to troubleshoot when they start to fail. Naturally, a constant misfire is easy enough to determine but when they start to fail under boost (typical) then a stock coil setup becomes a bit inconvenient to troubleshoot. Many owners opt for the other Audi coil options such as the red tops and those can...

This one comes from recent first hand experience. My father's 1994 Audi S4 developed a sudden (and big) oil leak. Upon checking the oil levels in the garage the car was down about a quart of oil with the vast majority of that having been deposited on the driveway and...

Have you ever found yourself trapped in your C4 series Audi A6, S4 or S6 thanks to a non-functional interior door pull? The exterior door handle still works but from the inside you've got no latch action. First of all, if it is in the rear make sure you don't have the child locks enabled. If you've been in the C4 community long enough, you'll no doubt know that many people swear by the original Audi tanks unless you want them to fail every few years. Audi C7 A6 Cooling Fan Issues - P0693 Error Codes

After changing the oil and resetting the service indicators on my wife's 2012 Audi A6 3.0T Prestige I ran a routine VCDS scan of the entire car. I grew up in Plymouth, graduated from Wayzata HS class of '09. Life long Audi enthusiast. I seem to remember an Emerald Green S6 saloon that was around Plymouth in the late 90's and early '00s. There were a few UR cars in the western suburbs growing up. Dad factory ordered his '14 S4 from Audi Minneapolis with a manual gearbox and nothing else. Ive got a '14 S7 with some OEM + improvements. Interested in finding a clean URS4/S6 saloon soon, preferably one that is built or at least full RS2 treatment. I now reside in South Alabama on the gulf coast.

    Nice job. Also a reminder there is a coolant hose that runs under the intake manifold that can fail. Additionally you can read the codes by using a jumper, and counting the blinks on the dash. So you don't need to buy the software to get the codes if you have the check engine light on.

      Funny you should mention meeting others because of the car. I've been followed into gas stations or parking lots many times over the years. Ironically, it isn't always the other Audi fans that chase me down but drivers of other brands like BMW, Volvo and VWs. Often times the first line out of their mouth is, "That's the 5 cylinder one, right?" Even my FedEx driver started talking to me about European cars. ;-)

    Can pretty much guarantee these were damaged during a spark plug change. If it is the same as the 4.0TT in the C7 RS6 then these connectors control the solenoids for the cylinder on demand process. The PCV system may be having issues if it is going through oil, forcing too much blow by into the cylinder. Either that or sticking rings, although this is pretty rare as far as I know. Cylinder 5 issues also had a TSB issued via a software update to resolve the misfiring. I know this is now 7 months old and hopefully you'll have had it sorted by now!

    • @SCARSORGofficial
      @SCARSORGofficial 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, since that video we're replaced all of the damaged looking connectors that we could find. None of them appeared to be loose during disassembly but better safe that sorry and it removes one potential variable from the equation. Time will tell I guess! I did also consider the PCV system. It had been done in the past and the car doesn't seem to use oil at an accelerated rate... maybe a quart (at most) over a 5k mile oil change interval.

    Almost a year ago I traded for a 1994 jade on tan C4 S4 with 179,800 miles. It has meticulous service records from 2001 to 2012 and then it sat until the previous owner to me got it running right before I got it. It's very stock and only has a few noticable aftermarket parts on it like the red hose your S4 has, a new o2 sensor, and a weird aftermarket wiring thing in the driver's footwell that as far as I know, isn't connected to anything anymore and hasn't been for a long time. While watching the video, it was kinda funny listening to you listing all the parts that are almost impossible to find now that are mostly present on my S4. Also Audi 100 exterior door panel trim is a perfect substitute for an S4's if you don't want to get aftermarket ones. Obviously since my S4 sat for over 10 years, it needs some love to be a reliable car again. For instance, none of the interior doorhandles work except the driver's door and one door doesn't open at all, it has a stumbling idle when cold, it needs an entire brake job and both rear calipers seem seized, it needs a thorough tune up of course, all fluids changed, and belts, pullies, and the water pump changed, and a paint job. However, it drives down the road (below 45 because of the brakes) so fantastic, other than the basically square ancient tires of course, that it shocks me it sat for 10+ years. I don't plan on perfectly restoring the car, even though it has great bones and very little rust (formerly a CA car), but I would like to get it to the point where I could daily it semi regularly. Thank you so much for making this video and other very informative videos, I know they will help me out very much on my S4! 😊

    I just recently bought an Audi s4 c4, but it’s a pain to find body parts for this car. I’m 18 and I’m trying to restore this car it has some rust on the fenders and side skirts. Do you have any recommendations for parts?

    • @SCARSORGofficial
      @SCARSORGofficial 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, the real challenging parts are the front bumpers and front fenders. The rest of the car in terms of body panels is the same as the 1992-1994 Audi 100 so you can widen your search to include those as well. Audi Tradition in Germany does still have some of these panels as well. Depending on how far gone your fenders are, a good body shop could likely recreate the lower bits with new metal if you absolutely can't find any rust free spares.

    When you usually do a timing belt and you replace the cam seal, do you do it after the new belt is on and in time or do you tackle it before fully digging in to the rest of the job. Just curious as I need to do my Timing belt and cam and crank seals

    • @SCARSORGofficial
      @SCARSORGofficial 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Honestly, when it comes to the camshaft seals I usually just inspect them for any signs of leaking. I rarely see leaks from them on these cars but I do tend to replace them every other timing belt service just for good measure. It's actually not horrible to replace them after the fact if you're reasonably confident working on cars. It would be the same as doing the cam sensor so you'd zip tie the timing belt to the cam sprocket in a few places, make a few reference marks and then release tension on the belt to remove the sprocket. If you have any signs of leaks or no record of them being replaced do them. I'd get your timing belt into position with the locking tool then zip tie the belt to the cam sprocket and do the cam seals first.

    I bought my emerald/ecru '93 in early 2003 and daily drove it for five years. It was only mildly tuned, but managed to make it work without inflicting undue stress and headaches along the way. My experience was that the car was exceptionally reliable, but my example was a two-owner, extremely well-cared for and pampered, and I admit that I paid quite a bit for it.. However, it was more than worth it, as I didn't have to deal with any major failures or exorbitant degrees of "sorting out" of issues along the way. I would totally buy another UrS, if they weren't as old as they are at this point... And I *only* say that because parts have only become harder to find, with many completely unavailable. And that'd be OK if I were going to make a garage queen out of the thing, but I want to drive it, and drive it regularly, and spiritedly, and that usually means replacing parts every so often... And I wouldn't want to find the car on jack stands for months on account of one or two virtually non-existent miscellaneous obscure little components. I can't tell you how tantalizing I find the idea of an AAN-swapped CQ or 4k or, hell, even a spicy modified V8q with a stick.. God, I never quite grew out of my "Audi phase," even now over 25 years since first catching the bug. But at this point, the scarcity of parts is *the* single, major precluding factor, effectively preventing me from making the jump back into the community. I will forever be able and more than willing to wax nostalgic about 80's/90's Audis (and VWs, for that matter), and will forever defend those 4-ringed models when debating the merits and virtues of enthusiast vehicles from that era... But, barring some remote and almost unimaginable circumstances, it's unlikely I'll be buying any of them again any time in the foreseeable future. (Unless, of course, something really special pops up, then forget everything i just said 😂)

    • @SCARSORGofficial
      @SCARSORGofficial 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Great comment! And yes, ALL of ours have been exceptionally reliable as well. Like you said, it comes down to buying a car that has been maintained and not simple tuned to go faster. I will say that I don't (yet) find it that difficult to find parts for the major mechanical components of the car but some of the trim and cosmetics are definitely unobtainium at this point. The rear upper suspension mounts are one exception... those are a bit of a needle in haystack as of late.

      Wow, a yellow one is definitely unique! Do you happen to know if it was repainted or somehow came from the factory in that color? Having run the S-CARS.ORG web site since 1998 and having a long-running owner registry, I do recall having some members in Norway. In fact, I had often corresponded with one gentleman who happened to own a camera store. So much so that when my parent's visited Norway in '98 or '99 (visiting extended family) they went and visited him and talked Audis for a bit. They may have been expensive there but there were definitely some great enthusiast owners in Norway. Appreciate your comment! Cheers!

    That was a lovely example. What's the deal with those amazing number plates over in the states? Wish we could have those over here in the UK. Private plates here are hard to find and expensive. And we have stupid rules meaning plates are age related and can't be retro fitted. For example, you can't have S2 on an S2 because S was 1998 year and S2 production ended about 96.

    • @SCARSORGofficial
      @SCARSORGofficial 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Over here the customized (or vanity) plates are a simple option. You can pay an extra $50 or so (on average) to get a custom plate. For my red 93 S4 I have a personalized collector plate. That was $100 but you pay it only once... then no more annual renewals! That's obviously a great deal as I just renewed the registration on my pearl car with personalized plates and it runs about $92 per year. Of course that all pales in comparison to what you deal with in the UK with your plates. It's hard to wrap my head around the amounts paid for some seemingly basic number plates over there. ;-) Thanks for your comment!

    Not a big fan of these coils, especially on such a factory clean car like you have. There is no performance gain under 400hp. That and the old school chips were used to the factory coils for dwell. On top of that the dwell issues causes starting issues when cold, at least with 1.8T / 2.0T coils.

    • @SCARSORGofficial
      @SCARSORGofficial 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've been running them since 2017 on the pearl car. Didn't really think about them as a performance mod, just more of a convenience mod. I've got old school chips in both the pearl (TAP) and red (Lehmann) and have had zero issues with cold start with these coils (and that includes a number of Minneapolis winters at -15F)... car always starts. Now, my UrS6 Avant with the 1.8 or 2.0T (I forget) coil setup DID have issues starting when really cold as you mentioned.

    I just paid $250 for a genuine Porsche coolant tank for my 944. The only other cheaper choice was a Uro for $150. I forgot to look to see where the Porsche part was made, but I bought it hoping to would last for another 20-30 years. I recently replaced the radiator in my B5 A4 😊 with a Mahle-Behr radiator. Again, I didn’t see where it was made. It’s discouraging that Mahle is getting stuff from China. I bought my stuff from FCP Euro for the lifetime guarantee.

    • @SCARSORGofficial
      @SCARSORGofficial 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, the 944 has a rather large tank too. I had an '87 951 some years ago and had the pleasure of buying a new tank as well. I did recently install a Mahle-Behr radiator in my son's C4 A6 as well. It was also Chinese if I remember correctly. It has already outlast the 3 overflow tanks but has yet to face a harsh Minnesota winter so time will tell. I know I've used a number of Nissens radiators in the past with good results... fingers crossed on the Mahle. I've also done the FCP thing but I've come to have less faith in the lifetime warranty hype over time as I've seen parts simply not being carried anymore. On newer cars it makes more sense as there is hope they'll still be interested in carrying the parts.

    Hi, thank you for your video. I think your thoughts on the lacking support from the factory are true. It is getting a little bit better because of Audi Tradition here in Germany, but overall not near Mercedes and BMW. That is a shame, and a reason to keep the values of these cars down…

    • @SCARSORGofficial

      Unfortunately we still don’t have easy access the Tradition here in the U.S. Audi loves to showcase their history in marketing but they don’t seem to interested in seeing that they can stay in use among enthusiasts. As you said, virtually every other German manufacturer does it better. Cheers!
