THE Worst Coolant Overflow Tanks I've Ever Seen For the C4 Chassis Audi

  • If you've been in the C4 community long enough, you'll no doubt know that many people swear by the original Audi tanks unless you want them to fail every few years. Well, the original tanks are now a bit of a challenge to find (is anyone surprised by this?) so that means we're stuck with aftermarkets/OEMs.
From a historical point of view, I held a pretty high opinion of the Mahle/Behr brand having used them quite a bit a decade ago (or more) when I was an automotive service manager for a local German specialty shop. They were typically reliable when compared to some of the other aftermarket options and were often the OEM supplier. Times change it seems.
The Meyle brand tanks would get a bit of a reputation for being short lived although I now have one of those going on a decade of service while I've had three of these Mahle units fail in just six months! I'm switching brands....
I'll post updates as I try some of the other options. In the meantime, if you've changed your coolant overflow tank what brand did you choose and how long has it been in service?

I had one of these new ones fail in about a year (or two)... right out of the side. It started a pee stream on the side, all over my engine. I've since pulled a few of the older reservoirs from junked A6s, and threw them in my shed.

I just paid $250 for a genuine Porsche coolant tank for my 944. The only other cheaper choice was a Uro for $150. I forgot to look to see where the Porsche part was made, but I bought it hoping to would last for another 20-30 years. I recently replaced the radiator in my B5 A4 😊 with a Mahle-Behr radiator. Again, I didn’t see where it was made. It’s discouraging that Mahle is getting stuff from China. I bought my stuff from FCP Euro for the lifetime guarantee.

Yeah, the 944 has a rather large tank too. I had an '87 951 some years ago and had the pleasure of buying a new tank as well.
I did recently install a Mahle-Behr radiator in my son's C4 A6 as well. It was also Chinese if I remember correctly. It has already outlast the 3 overflow tanks but has yet to face a harsh Minnesota winter so time will tell. I know I've used a number of Nissens radiators in the past with good results... fingers crossed on the Mahle.
I've also done the FCP thing but I've come to have less faith in the lifetime warranty hype over time as I've seen parts simply not being carried anymore. On newer cars it makes more sense as there is hope they'll still be interested in carrying the parts.

@@SCARSORGofficial I think the 951 tanks are even more pricey. Enjoy your channel. My A4 is getting toward the end of its life. I would like to find a decent urS6 Avant to replace it some day.
