  • Looking at buying the first generation Audi S4? Also known as the C4 S4 or UrS4, these cars are getting challenging to find, especially in stock form.
    In this video we take a fairly in-depth look at a clean 1994 Audi S4 to talk about some of the things you should be aware of before buying the first generation Audi S4.

    I grew up in Plymouth, graduated from Wayzata HS class of '09. Life long Audi enthusiast. I seem to remember an Emerald Green S6 saloon that was around Plymouth in the late 90's and early '00s. There were a few UR cars in the western suburbs growing up. Dad factory ordered his '14 S4 from Audi Minneapolis with a manual gearbox and nothing else. Ive got a '14 S7 with some OEM + improvements. Interested in finding a clean URS4/S6 saloon soon, preferably one that is built or at least full RS2 treatment. I now reside in South Alabama on the gulf coast.

    A good review of the cars, detailed information about the nuances, it is nice that there are real fans of Audi A6 S6 C4 in America...

    Nice job. Also a reminder there is a coolant hose that runs under the intake manifold that can fail. Additionally you can read the codes by using a jumper, and counting the blinks on the dash. So you don't need to buy the software to get the codes if you have the check engine light on.

      Thanks for stopping by and greetings from Minneapolis. Funny thing is that I don't think I knew an automatic version of these cars actually existed until the late 1990s. The first automatic I ever saw was from an owner in Thailand who joined my owner registry many years ago.

    When I was a kid back in 2005-06 my dad had a yellow C4 S6 which I just loved. And before that my uncle had a Audi RS2. So to keep the tradition going I am obviously looking for an S4 or S6 my self. But as you say, these are challenging to find, especially in stock and nice form. And to make it even harder for my self, I live in Norway. And there were few cars that were originally sold here due to the high import tax. But your video has definitely helped me on my search to find one that is perfect for me, thank you!

      Wow, a yellow one is definitely unique! Do you happen to know if it was repainted or somehow came from the factory in that color? Having run the S-CARS.ORG web site since 1998 and having a long-running owner registry, I do recall having some members in Norway. In fact, I had often corresponded with one gentleman who happened to own a camera store. So much so that when my parent's visited Norway in '98 or '99 (visiting extended family) they went and visited him and talked Audis for a bit. They may have been expensive there but there were definitely some great enthusiast owners in Norway. Appreciate your comment! Cheers!

    Almost a year ago I traded for a 1994 jade on tan C4 S4 with 179,800 miles. It has meticulous service records from 2001 to 2012 and then it sat until the previous owner to me got it running right before I got it. It's very stock and only has a few noticable aftermarket parts on it like the red hose your S4 has, a new o2 sensor, and a weird aftermarket wiring thing in the driver's footwell that as far as I know, isn't connected to anything anymore and hasn't been for a long time. While watching the video, it was kinda funny listening to you listing all the parts that are almost impossible to find now that are mostly present on my S4. Also Audi 100 exterior door panel trim is a perfect substitute for an S4's if you don't want to get aftermarket ones. Obviously since my S4 sat for over 10 years, it needs some love to be a reliable car again. For instance, none of the interior doorhandles work except the driver's door and one door doesn't open at all, it has a stumbling idle when cold, it needs an entire brake job and both rear calipers seem seized, it needs a thorough tune up of course, all fluids changed, and belts, pullies, and the water pump changed, and a paint job. However, it drives down the road (below 45 because of the brakes) so fantastic, other than the basically square ancient tires of course, that it shocks me it sat for 10+ years. I don't plan on perfectly restoring the car, even though it has great bones and very little rust (formerly a CA car), but I would like to get it to the point where I could daily it semi regularly. Thank you so much for making this video and other very informative videos, I know they will help me out very much on my S4! 😊

      Thank you for the kind words. I still see lots of room for improvement on my end in terms of the production value but we'll keep working towards better content. I'll never be in the million view category by doing C4 S4/S6 and D2 S8 content but if it helps a few people along the way that's good enough for me. Cheers!

      I wish I could do that but I'd need a car first! ;-) My own ownership history with that chassis is limited to the Coupe quattro 20V with the 7A NA motors. I had one of those for a number of years and went through it top to bottom at the time.

    Great video! I just got my hands on a URS6 and I am very happy, have wanted one since high school. It does however weep power steering fluid out of the X plug on top of the power steering pump, do you by chance have the P/N for that seal in there? It is difficult to find as you said.

    Oh man this is so good thank you for doing this OCD Tour of the S4! I bought mine two years ago in Texas sight unseen for $2500. The whole hot side was dismantled and there was a picture of all the parts in the trunk. The guy seemed pretty legit so had a little Audi faith and had it shipped to CA for another $1K. When it arrived the locking mechanism was there on the trunk but no latch. By an act of divine intervention I did a full inventory on the turbo parts which were all as well as pretty much everything else including the mobile phone, ECU, and that strange flattened white leather bag of some sort which I know now is for the skis 😂. Anyways always up for a conversation on reverse engineering obscure pieces like the trunk bumpers and rubber antenna grommet. Hopefully the head will pass the flow test but I really want to do a full ocd resto similar to the German channel RD48 with the exception of removing the factory glass. Have you seen that?

    • @SCARSORGofficial
      @SCARSORGofficial  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Wow, that sounds like quite the adventure! As for the antenna grommet, I did do some additional digging into it and might have found an OEM cross-reference to one used on an Opel Astra or Vauxhall across the pond. Still to be determined though. I have seen the RD48 resto... inspirational!

      @@SCARSORGofficial Brilliant mate. I did see your video a year or so ago on conditioning all the hoses and vacuum lines which I've been doing. I seem to be missing three lines that start from the center of the turbo housing. The top one is the solid aluminum line that snakes around the front of the engine. The other two are on the bottom of the turbo- do you know the names of those particular lines?

    Weren't the wood Vavona red burl instead of walnut?
    That's what i though i had in my S4 and i made a gauge pod using vavona veneer on a maple block and it was exactly the same as my trims.

    I just recently bought an Audi s4 c4, but it’s a pain to find body parts for this car. I’m 18 and I’m trying to restore this car it has some rust on the fenders and side skirts. Do you have any recommendations for parts?

    • @SCARSORGofficial
      @SCARSORGofficial  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Well, the real challenging parts are the front bumpers and front fenders. The rest of the car in terms of body panels is the same as the 1992-1994 Audi 100 so you can widen your search to include those as well. Audi Tradition in Germany does still have some of these panels as well. Depending on how far gone your fenders are, a good body shop could likely recreate the lower bits with new metal if you absolutely can't find any rust free spares.

    • @SCARSORGofficial
      @SCARSORGofficial  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Watch the S-CAR Preservation Society group on Facebook as well as the other UrS4/S6 groups there for parts. I do see them turn up from time to time if you are patient.

    Great video! Do have a question regarding the radio on my '95.5 S6 (Brilliant Black over Platinum interior;144K miles; owned since Dec. '98). Last Summer I had my headliner and door panel fabric replaced with gray Alcantara...VERY pleased with the result. While this was being done had the windshield replaced (sourced from local Audi dealer along with the surrounding rubber gasket). My OEM radio now does not work and your mention of the the antenna in the windshield made made go look at my new windshield...no wires present in the center. The label on the windshield does have the 4 Audi ring logo, indicates Pilkington with the number 43R-001585. Where do I go from here to get my radio back in operation? In advance, THANKS for any help you can offer.

    • @SCARSORGofficial
      @SCARSORGofficial  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh no! Sounds like they used the 94 S4 glass on yours. When I was hunting for replacement glass for both of my cars last year I also had an installer tell me he'd found some Pilkington glass... only to determine it was missing the antenna. In order to fix yours at this point you'll have to essentially run your own new antenna somewhere and connect it to the former front antenna lead. My guess would be that running something discreetly up the passenger side A pillar and wiring back under the dash would be the easiest route. The stock glass antenna connectors can't really be reached with the glass in as they are sort of under the passenger side of the dash at the base of the windshield. I can't recall which connector is which on the back of the radio (off the top of my head) but there is a slight chance I mention it in my other video. Otherwise I bet it can be found in the QuattroWorld FAQs.
      I'm thinking the alcantara headliner and door panels are the way I'll go as well. Love the look of that.

      Many thanks for the reply @SCARSORGofficial. Since the fact that the OEM radio will not even turn on when
      the car's ignition is in the ON position follow due to the fact that the antenna is not connected make sense?

    • @SCARSORGofficial

      @@chrisbeghtel8086 Ah, no... the radio should still turn on. The factory radio is wired to be hot all the time so it should work with the ignition on or off. Have you checked fuses? I know a lot of Audi head units had 5A fuses on the back of the units so it's worth a look.
