  • A slight departure from our usual C4 S4 and D2 S8 content, this time we're back to talking briefly about the 2013 Audi S6 4.0T (C7) and the most common issue we've experienced with this car over the years.
Misfiring. Specifically, random misfires plus a persistent code for a cylinder 3 misfire. This is the 4th time in 77k miles that this same issue has popped up. I assumed the cylinder 3 coil might have been getting tired so we did a full spark plug and coil replacement on the car in early August of 2023. Just 18 days later while on a road trip through Wisconsin the misfire returned... and remained. We wound up limping the car into Appleton Audi where they replaced the spark plugs again along with one of the electrical connectors for the cam adjuster solenoids on each cylinder. I believe they did cylinder #5 connector.
The car survived the trip back home without incident but time will tell if it remains happy or if the issue comes back again soon.

Can pretty much guarantee these were damaged during a spark plug change. If it is the same as the 4.0TT in the C7 RS6 then these connectors control the solenoids for the cylinder on demand process. The PCV system may be having issues if it is going through oil, forcing too much blow by into the cylinder. Either that or sticking rings, although this is pretty rare as far as I know. Cylinder 5 issues also had a TSB issued via a software update to resolve the misfiring. I know this is now 7 months old and hopefully you'll have had it sorted by now!

Well, since that video we're replaced all of the damaged looking connectors that we could find. None of them appeared to be loose during disassembly but better safe that sorry and it removes one potential variable from the equation. Time will tell I guess! I did also consider the PCV system. It had been done in the past and the car doesn't seem to use oil at an accelerated rate... maybe a quart (at most) over a 5k mile oil change interval.

It’s your piston rings. They’re stuck and allowing oil into the cylinder which is causing the misfire. You’re welcome.

Audi looks sleek but they punish the owners with problems that are so expensive.

Well, to be fair, this car hasn't been that expensive to own overall. If you're stuck going to the dealership and/or don't have any DIY skills then it will definitely be a more expensive journey.
