We will show you how to modify an older style Honda carburetor to work with the new Honda HRN216 GCV170 engine. Because the Honda GCV170 engine is fairly new, parts are hard to find online and not yet available. This is a great alternative for handy DIY folks to do without breaking the bank. Big thanks to Jim for asking a great and very informative question. www.amazon.com/Honda-Power-Equipment...

Great, The mower was given to me...the neighbor could not get it to run correctly. The main problem was he did not attach the new blades correctly. He had purchased a new Honda and his wife loves it. Anyway, some of the other videos got me confused on the correct placement of the pinion gears. It was easy to get me confused...heck I just turned 78. Thanks again, Chief Ken Bauer, USAF (Ret)
Great video, thanks! I consider myself generally handy, but never worked much on small engines. I did a carb swap in about 30 minutes (would have been faster if I didn’t use the studs) and runs like new. One recommendation, you do not need studs. I watched a couple videos and all said you need studs. I found. 3 pack on Amazon for $7, so I bought them. Everything was going smooth, too smooth actually. I thought for sure something would go wrong. And as I went to out on the final piece, the air filter cover, there wasn’t enough slack in the house to reach over the studs. I didn’t see how the hose disconnected easily. I could cut off about 1” off the studs and it would work. But instead, I just used the bolts as their own studs and assembled it in reverse, starting with the cover. It was just as easy as using the studs, when I was done, I just mounted the whole thing and it started in the first pull. I watched a few videos, and liked this one the best. But they all said to get studs. I found it just as easy without them (I had to do it twice because of the studs).
Scusa ma no ho capito come fai ad invertire la molla?
bought some and do not have dots or indication of anything , how you know which side it is or just let it click and is good ? /
Worked for me. I had mistakenly thought I had a problem with the main jet, took the thing apart and cleaned everything but I still had the problem, stumbled on your video and fixed it in 5 mins. Cheers.
Amazingly well done video. Thanks
@@KyleSalewski thank you thank you
Cleaning it worked perfectly! Thanks
Sheeeeeee!!!
Now I feel more dumber after watching this video useless information
Nice!
What size shelving unit are you using to store your mowers? I need to get one!
Loved the video. Concise. No long intro. Useful information. Good camera work. When I put the valve cover back on should I scape off and replace the honda bond, or can I just bolt it back on? Anything special needed to remove the cam gear assembly? Or does removing the valve cover give full access?
Thank you thank you! It’s a good idea to always scrape off the old gasket. It’s a good practice, but if you’re in a pinch, you could reuse it. No special tool to get the cam gear out you might just have to dismount the engine to allow enough clearance to get the CAM gear pin out.
Rather than studs,I used bamboo shish kabob sticks. Handy, had a bag in the kitchen. Won't strip the threads and you can customize the length. When done throw them away!
I know this is the "correct" way to replace the drive belt. But if you remove the rear axle completely (4 bolts snd the spring) and fish the belt through, this job is very easy and takes less than 10. Minutes total.. and almost no swearing.
Thanks for the comment and thanks for finding me!
I accidentally put 3 liters of oil into the gas tank of my Honda GCV170 lawn mower. Is there any video that can include the main steps to fix this issue and ensure I don't damage the engine?
What if it only surges when warmed up? Does that indicate a different issue?
What specific brand of spring clip tool are you using? I’ve tried 2, and they are not catching the hold on the clips. It looks like the holes do not go all the way through so I might need a better quality tool.

Thank you!@@dadsworkshopbykipplabrie7982
Why do most of these videos not show how to ACTUALLY clean the jets?
I think because it’s technically called a modular, and the repair manual
I'll give credit where it's due. This fixed my mower. I didn't remove the carb just slid it back far enough to get that tight ass Phillips screw out hit it with carb cleaner then air now she runs like a champ. Thank you!
Dad, what did you specifically do? I’ve been trying almost the same thing to include backpack sprayer ammonium sulfate, Lowe’s version of Milorganite, real Milorganite, premium seed (hundreds of dollars worth ), starter ferts, Humic Acid, Iron, Nitrogen, and a shit ton of top-dressing which is where I am now. I mixed pre-germinated with premium regular seed. Been watering. My first attempt was premium seed, top dressing but a two week 90 degree drought in the Rochester NY area near Lake Ontario. Waiting on results. Got some growth, but man! I’ve put over a month into this and a grand. New equipment too, new commercial broadcast spreader, Scott’s Wizz. Geesh
How long does the 'fix' last?
I purchased an HRN216 brand new two months ago. Cut my grass maybe four times and now it's surging. Great. I bought the Honda to replace my rusting 10 year old Husqvarna that sat outside in the rain and snow most of it's life, yet still always started on the second pull and never surged. The base rusted through, but the engine still ran perfect. So, is cleaning the carb going to be a 'thing' every other week or what? Maybe I should sell it and get another Husqvarna...
Thankyou so much. She's running like a champ again. The mower only has 5 hours on it.
After 10 yrs, needed new rear tyres, looked at my (HRX217HYA) gear and there is NO DOT visible on either side. Once i get smaller snap ring pliers i'll see what's up.
Harbor Freight has a remarkable snap ring pliers that works on that tiny snap ring . About $5.95, bought one about month ago.
Thank you "Daddy" this was a good fix, although I took a short cut and had to execute the repair a second time to fix it. The first time I did not remove the pilot jet screw; Cleaned everything with all 3 tools; (Carb cleaner, pipe-cleaner and mild compressed air) and when reassembled and started the mower, it continued to surge. A second tear-down and removing the pilot jet screw was the key. A trick others might find useful when attempting to remove "stuck fasteners" such as this little pilot jet screw which I encountered, is to impact the screw head first with some force. In this situation I used the end of a 1/4" x 6" long socket extension and a hammer to apply a few "love-taps" to the head of the screw from multiple angles and the screw came right out. Your instruction to verify the "auto choke" feature is working properly was pretty cool too (closed when cold and open when the motor is warm) Thank you Daddy!👊
LOL!!! Thanks for watching. So many viewers struggle with that stubborn pilot jet screw. I always try help but the actuality is their not using the correct “removal” tool. Thanks again and it sounds like you know your way around a shop.
Awesome Video..Great. Been working on small engines for 40 years and this is one of the best videos. ..about the belt. I've seen the belt come off the pulley.. Just a simple fix.. New Belt time
What a waste of time
Gotcha!
Great video, but I tried everything and it still surged. I've fixed other equipment that surged with a similar process, but not this one Honda mower. I ended up just buying a new carb. I cleaned the old carb several times and saw slight improvement, but the surging continued. I've yet to see a video that describes the screw set next to the pilot jet and whether that can contribute to the surging issue as well. I'm not sure how that can be removed, adjusted, etc.
Invaluable tips with relation to the drive gear installation. Made it so much easier mate!
I have the identical problem. I tried to remove that pilot jet screw on top of the carb, but it will NOT BUDGE! is there a good way to remove it without damaging the carburetor? The screw head stripped right away when I tried to remove it, it's on so tight.
Do you have a impact drill driver (1/4”)? I finally ran into this problem for the first time recently and this is the most common question I get I’ll send a link for the tool I use for stubborn nuts and bolts. a.co/d/gcGCXIV
Nevermind. I used my Dremel tool with a cutoff blade to cut a slot in the head of the bolt deep enough that I could use a slotted screwdriver to back it out. it was tight!!! And you were right. the jet was clogged right there under that screw! the rest of the carb was very clean. thanks!
Kipp. Wierd question...i got a brand new Honda gcv160 LAO BHH gjara engine. What mower would this go on? I was hoping to use it on my hrr216k9vyaa. But the sump doesnt have screw holes for the belt guard or the clutch holder that assembly goes on..any help appreciated

Absolutely the best of the bunch covering all the little cavorts you always run into, Your tip on how to loosen the brake nut with a standard wrench and a bar was a life savor for me. Thanks again Ron
Thank you so much Ron, that means a lot to me. Thanks for your support.
So this might be a silly question but what size snap pliers were you using as I just bought a pair and I think they’re too big
They should of came with different size inserts inside a tiny plastic bag
@@dadsworkshopbykipplabrie7982 I got three, but I think the head tips are too big. That’s why I’m asking. Is there smaller ones or are they all standard one size?
Yes my bad, here’s the part# Channellock - 6.5 Retaining Ring Plier (926)
@@dadsworkshopbykipplabrie7982 thank you soo much! Great video also I forgot to mention that.

Great video. Do you have video that goes beyond where this video stops. I want to replace the washer and clips between the transmission and height adjuster. I dis-assembled to the point of removing the height adjuster and 22mm clip between adjuster and transmission, but cannot remove the axle rod. The collar on the left side appears to be fixed to the axle rod so I can only slide the axle rod a certain distance.
Worked beautiful Thank you
Very much helpful video where clear explanation and closer video recording for accurate operation. From Sri Lanka👍
Great video
Thanks for your support!
The main jet/emulsion tube should also be cleaned.
Good call! Thanks for watching
Thank you. It helped just clean sponge and carburetor. It was working though but lost a lot of "power" before.
I did exactly what I saw in this video and I'll be damned, I started it up and it ran like day one. Much appreciated!!
So, there's not really a "compression valve"? The decompression is a function the cam gear briefly opening both valves momentarily? My HOnda hrx 217 hxa is REALLY hard to pull start. I've tried pulling off the cover, made sure the two valves are operating.(the exhaust valve was sticking, so I freed it up). It still feels like I'm fighting full compression, when pull the cord. I don't know what else to check, but just get a new cam gear, like shown in the video. Is there a way of checking that plastic gear to determine it's failed? The little spring arm seems to be working fine.
I lost the 2 screws while doing a carb cleaning have Any idea what kind and size? Thanks!
dont think he said why the 1 dot on the leftwent in and the 1 on the right was facing out?
They both have to be facing the same direction, to the right, so the shark fins face the same direction on each side.
I have a hrb216 with Roto stop...but I have a hrr216 with the bowtie adapter..can I put the hrb216 engine on the hrr216?
Intro is way too long. Spare us the jibber jab, please. Just get to it.
Noted! Thanks for finding me.
Thx u so much!
Absolutely
correction: lines askew meant the lobe was NOT pointing straight ahead.
FIXED!!! It was my crappy method of finding TDC (although it might have been the pulley too). Using your technique, saw the valves were off, and using a mirror, saw that the two embossed lines were slightly askew (which is the same as the lobe pointing straight ahead). . Lifted the belt off, spun the pulley, then replaced. Guess I'll have to inform the JustAnswer guys. Thanks!!!!
Hell yeah! Thanks for watching
Really clear explanation! Yank back on my HRX217 terrible. Could my finding TDC technique be wrong? Will try yours. I swapped decompression gear but you didn't explain where to park the crankshaft when replacing it. The question: If you're at TDC, are the two embossed lines on the pulley supposed to line up with the valve cover opening? Would that then be "correctly timed"?
How can you tell if the belt needs to be replaced? Mine is still tight and not stretched.
