  • In this video, we cover the general retopology workflow in Houdini. We go over the workflow for a human head, but we might cover the body in a future video.

I prefer your lack of accent in these older videos. Feels calmer, and I would guess easier for non- English listeners as well. Of course great content no matter how you speak. All the best!

Not sure, I don't believe there is. It is usually something that needs to be done by hand. Although, I think there is a beta quad-remesher if I'm not mistaken. Could sometimes get away with using that I think.

Curious which one you think is overall better - Quaddraw or Topobuild?

    • @NineBetween
      @NineBetween  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I feel that overall QuadDraw is better, but not by much, it feels slightly faster to work with. But if you'd prefer to stay in a single software package, it's nice to know that you don't have to leave Houdini to complete your retopology tasks.

@@NineBetween Thank you for the great video!
Here are the pros and cons I found with different topology software:
      Quadraw Maya:
      PROS:
_Very ergonomic and clever keyboard shortcuts, fewer manipulations.
_Powerful smoothing inside and on border edges.
_Faster than most topotools... Until... you realise the cons...
      CONS:
_Impossible to work with 3D connexion's mouse when you go beyond 1000 polygons.
_Still feel like a plugin and not fully integrated. (NEX plugin)
_AUTODESK did not sort out the slowing down problem reported so many years ago... Its a joke and lack of respect towards the community.
_We have to process so many tricks to make it work faster and despite of that, it becomes so slow after couple 1000 polygons, that you MUST stop and split your model or use another software.
      _Graphically unpleasant, not aesthetic
3DCOAT: super powerful, but the ergonomics is illogical, which is a shame as most of the software is designed this way. Few things are genius clever and others feel out of place.
      HOUDINI's TOPOBUILD:
_Well, recently SideFx introduced ergonomically friendly polymodeling tool and worflows.
And they are progressing faster than any other software maker.
So much so that in less than a year I finally jumped in and tried modeling and retopo inside...
At first I was swearing at it...
Quickly I understood the power under the hood.
      PROS:
_Mega powerful and works perfectly in conjunction with 3D connexion (super fluid workflow with it)
_Beautiful and smooth design and colors looking pro and sharp.
_Node based... So many possibilities and super flexible (like you started demonstrating)
      CONS:
_Need to make it much smoother in terms of shortcut use. E.g. Why do we have to switc between tools when brush and smooth can use similar functions... Etc.
_Need more options and more powerful precise (centered) snapping in symmetry mode.
_Smoothing border edges yet impossble (unless I missed something)
They are still recently developped tools but yet they are growing very fast indeed...
Making Houdini my weapon of choice for retopo on massive polucount subjects.
Thanks again for your videos!! Very great presentation and narrative skills.
      JM

    • @henry-yu2ju
      @henry-yu2ju 3 ปีที่แล้ว

A lot of people do depends on what you are trying to model. You are modelling a static item that will never need to change or need diferent variations and tons of detail ? Ok sure go maya blender zbrush w/e. But if you are modelling a sword or gun that you know in the future you are going to need tons of different swords or guns because of a game asset or something this is where houdini shines. It can automate and makes 100's of different types of that sword or gun using parameters and some scripting with all ur UV's and baking setup etc.
