    The clarity in the way you deliver information is so helpful, especially with the “Topoly Triangle” diagram that you made ! It brings logic to a subject that I found quite difficult regarding 3D so thank you ✨

    I've heard all these terms in random places, and seen several videos about 'how to' over the past couple years. This video, thank you for presenting them all in context of each other, which approach for which use case, and going over the 'why' of them. With context it makes so much more sense.

    3D Coat has another awesome Retopo toolset that feels very artistic. You can also very robustly and iteratively UV alongside your retopo process, with a very neat, stretch free inhouse UV unwrap algorithm for organics.

    Hi, Thank you for the video.
    If you could share the progress of retopology of a fair complex character (with armors and stuff) in topogun, that would be really helpful.
    Speaking of armors, when armors are on top of each other, should you merge them and retopo them as one model? or it's better to be seperate and retopo the whole thing and then delete the parts that are not seen?

    Could I see you doing a retopology game ready for a character please ? I know how to do a basic retopology but they're.... Basics. Like I don't know how to capture the folds of a pants perfectly, how to mix the human and the cloth so that during the animation one don't go above the other or, so the animations for the arms muscles works great, when or how to think triangles and mostly that f****** ear.... Please ;-;

    I wouldn't define topology as a 'surface'. Surface is continuous and has no vertex or edges. I'd define it as rings bridged together

    This presentation is missing the key to understanding topology, which is how local curvature determines proper mesh layout. Absent specific animation requirements, and unless we are on a perfect sphere ( ex: eyeball ), or on a flat plane, at each point on _any_ curved surface ( ex: your arm ), the direction of least curvature is ALWAYS - mathematically - _perpendicular_ to the direction of greatest curvature! So when in doubt, ask yourself, at each point on a curved surface, what is the direction of greatest curvature, from which you can infer the direction of least curvature, and then you can determine how your spans, or edge loops, should go. Having your quad edges follow the lines of greatest and least curvature is the best way for the model to be efficient and light properly, particularly when low-res ( specular highlights naturally following, and stretching along, lines of curvature ). The rest is optimization, as well as accounting for curvature density ( = high-frequency important "detail", with high rates of local curvature = small radii of curvature ), in the base mesh , in preparation for subdivision. Determining directions of local curvature is how automated retopology tools work.
    Note: One trick, to help in the process - if you have a physical model to work from - is to walk around it with a spotlight, which will reveal directions of greatest and least curvature, at each point, as the specular highlight travels and stretches along the surface. Applying a reflective coat of paint or oil, to the model, helps. The direction specular highlights stretch ( i.e. the direction of least curvature ), *in a particular area,* as one moves the spotlight around, is an attribute of the surface, caused by curvature, not the position of the light, nor of the orientation of the surface in space. That is why good topology, for a given mesh density, rationally converges toward a single solution.

      @@hartgameart What do you mean? I am 100% human. ☺ Sign of the times, I guess. It took me _years_ to figure that one out, re. curvature; I only stumbled on it when I started programming a tool to retopologize meshes ( TINs ), and learned the math ( vector calc ). I have seen a lot of bad meshes, and this insight makes laying down tolopogy, manually, much easier. It's kind of the key, really. ...Thanks for the snide remark, though. Clearly, _not_ chatgpt!
