I am 55 years old and I have worked in TV for 36 years. Part of that time was spent with an expensive broadcast TV camera on my shoulder. I purchased the S5M2 about a month ago. Anything that I do with the camera will be for my own personal projects. I have no desire to work with an external SSD or large files. The S5M2 shoots in 4K 10-bit video, which is more than enough for any short film, documentary, or music video that I want to work on.
Definitely it'll serve you well! for me the BRAW elevates the image quality even further than what you can achieve internally, but the internal image is still beautiful!
Let's give a big shout-out to the ladies in our lives who always oblige us and have to go through this drill: "Stand here, don't move for a few seconds. Ok, now start to walk slowly... that's it, now turn your head slowly... No, not this way, the other way please... OK, now look away into the distance... not too fast... good, good, good... Now I want you to walk fast in that direction and halfway through you'll spin around to look at me..."
I've been trying to choose between Sony, Fujifilm and Panasonic in the past couple of days and I think I'm going to go with the Panasonic. Thanks again for the review, it was all I needed.
Best Lumix review ever from someone who's an actual filmmaker. Thanks for all the work around tips. Because it helps me to lean into the LUMIX vs. my SONY consideration. Well done!
You are the only one I trust with camera reviews. You actually make good videos. Your footage looks awesome! A lot of creators make ass footage and call it a day. But you know what you are doing.
Thank you I appreciate it. Sadly LUMIX don't really seem interested in sending me their cameras to review so it's difficult to keep making these kinds of videos.
THIS is the review I’ve been waiting for. I always enjoy your review style and perspective. Instead of shots of flowers in the backyard and color charts, we get beautiful footage of how the tools would be used and their actual potential. Thank you, Ed!
Yeah I need to have fun doing these vids and I don't want to spend my "time off" shooting colour charts! Plus there are already many people who take the time to do that stuff!
Been waiting for this review. You have just enough technical analysis without going down the rabbit hole. But more importantly you highlight the creative potential of the camera with fantastic example footage that is properly graded. 👏👏
Thanks man! Yes that's what I attempt, to balance the technical whilst remembering that these are creative tools and showing what you can actually produce with it!
OK, after a week of thinking it over, and watching more TH-cam videos on the subject to make anyone go bonkers, I found this video! It was exactly what I needed on the subject. Loved your down to earth review, with great footage comparisons (Kudos to the model) and not too much tech talk. I purchased a S5iix via the link and will be coming back for more info. Thanks!
Ah this is so nice to hear, thanks for letting me know! Hope it gives you a lot of pleasure and thank you so much for using the link. Do check back soon to let me know how you're getting on with the IIX!
Really great information. one of the better s5ii reviews ive seen. I just brought s5ii and sigma 24-70 lens with cage etc. It arrives 2mor im super hyped to start creating some stunning visuals :)
Amazing! Thanks for letting me know. I hope it works out well for you. Have actually been shooting a lot with the S5 iix and sigma 24-70 combo recently
@@EdProsser wicked bro. glad to hear that. spent a bit of time researching and landed on this combo for run and gun all in one cinematic set up. Again great info... will have to try braw like you said. A lot to test and learn with this cam but will sure refer to this video for guidance. big up
I really like these longer reviews, I've owned the s1 s1h s5 but jumped over to fuji gfx with 100 ii and Im considering moving back to this camera and this review was very helpful
Thanks I like the longer reviews but they sure take a lot of time! If you're interested I just posted an absolutely mammoth long term review of my Komodo.
Thank you so much for such an in-depth, real world review. I think the long-form format really gives you time to explore what these cameras have to offer (which is a lot!). And with so much footage to show, with different lens combinations, I really got a sense of the cameras potential. I've been a Lumix user for a while (currently using the GH5 mk2), and I agree with you about Panasonic colours - they are highly underrated by so many reviewers. Panasonic are on a bit of a roll at the moment, and as well as this camera, the G9II is calling out to me... I need to get my GAS under control, and be thankful for what I've got! Thank you again for taking the time to make this - well worth the effort.
Honestly comments like this make it worth it - it's a huge amount of work to fit in between my professional client work but I feel like the only real way to test kit is out in the field and capturing proper material to showcase what you can do with kit. I absolutely understand why some people shoot in their backyard or do colour charts - as they might not have the time to do more! Really excited to see what Panasonic does next - will probably test out the G9ii at some point and share my thoughts.
@@EdProsser I'd really be interested in your thoughts on this camera. I truly believe that there is life in the old micro four-thirds dog yet - and heartening to see that Panasonic agree. My only question is, what on earth will they have to put in the GH7 now to make that an attractive proposition..?
This was hands down the most complete and comprehensive review I have seen. Very much appreciated and absolutely inviting. Your images are really soothing to look at. Gorgeous and natural! I really admire how well you've laid out and produced this whole review. Deserves a lot of thumbs up!
My first visit to this channel, thanks to Matthew Dangyou. I am stunned. Now all the "top" channels sink to mediocre. Such a refreshment to see this. No nonsense talk accompanied by superb, tasty clips. I had the urge to immediately see this video one more time, but your model (wife?) is painfully pretty and a superb actress as well, so something else.
haha thank you for the kind words, please feel free to browse my LUMIX playlist, lots of other vids. Stef, my partner is not a professional model / actress but she definitely helps me out!
@@EdProsser you owe a lot to her really... if Stefie _("Stef" sounds too manly across German and Croatian realm)_ isn't a femme fatale, then I don't know who is? Didn't know those still existed in England by the way :))) How did you know I was a Lumix user? :)
I really want an S5ii or an S5iix. Hoped to see a video from you about it after I watched the S5 and S5ii many many times just for the vibe. It is very important for me to see a camera in action with the visuals that I desire and you do that. Hat's off to you my friend!
My pleasure - I wanted to use this camera in the wild for a bit - to really put it through its paces and test stuff like anamorphic shooting and BRAW (which is a dream to shoot with!). Hope this is useful in making your decision - any questions let me know!
Hey! I’m glad that I came across your channel through this video! I lined up a ton of your videos to watch and I hope it’s ok that i comment on each video i watch to do my part to let youtube know more people need to find your stuff! Love your grading too. I could watch people taking out trash if it’s colored like this haha jkjk Freals thanks for all the work you’ve put into this man!
Enjoyed the material you included in this long form review, subscribed after watching. I'm looking at the S5iix with the current deal that includes the 85mm lens for free; body with kit 20-60mm+ 85mm for $1,840 total is very tempting!
Your footages is absolutely stunning. I'm trying to decide between an S5iix and the older S1H, and your channel is the first I've seen where the S5iix footage is comparable to the S1H - all the other channels (that I've seen) are so over sharpened looking. If you were choosing between a purchase of a S1H or the S5iix, which way would you lean? Both cameras can be purchased for approximately the same price (by getting a used S1H).
That's a really tough question, I'd say the S1H has the edge on image quality over the S5 iix, but you just gain a tonne of useful features in the iix that you don't get in the S1H... I also think shooting RAW on the S5 iix fixes a lot of issues with it. Josh Cameron just put out a vid today doing side by side comparisons between the two cams, if that helps at all. I think you can probably mitigate a lot of the sharpness in the S5 with lens choice, filters and grading...
@@EdProsserThank you for the reply! It’s starting to look like the videos I see from the S1H or BlackMagic cameras look so good (to me) is less about the camera, and more about the person behind it knowing what they are doing. Perhaps it’s just that the operators behind those cameras are just doing more to their footage to get that beautiful look? Like they know better how to expose the shot, get that perfect lighting, select the right filters, and color grade. And perhaps what I’m seeing from all these s5iix reviews is people just shooting in auto mode with stock lenses or something. I think I naively thought I would need to buy an S1H to get that look. Anyways… that’s a long winded way of saying thank you again. I’m going to buy the s5iix and try and work my way up to getting something similar to your look.
@@5656565564556564 90% of that look will be user experience, lighting / composition / lens choice. I think the S1H has a softer more organic image that can help, but the S5iix can still produce a beautiful image and I think if you put footage side by side most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference
Bought a s5II about 3 months ago to film my son’s lacrosse games. I am absolutely loving this camera! Naturally, I’ve watched all kinds of videos on the camera and this video is one of the best. Thanks’ Ed!
As you are a connoisseur of S5ii videos I'm honored to receive your positive feedback. You chose a great cam and I hope you're enjoying documenting the lacrosse games for future posterity!
most people (reviewers) just dont show example videos and explain in such detail.. Only few actually shoots and explains.. you are One!! I liked your video.. subscribed..
Thank you for the review! As I plan to upgrade from my GH4, I am keeping my GH5 and Sony FX6 for client work. I hope this camera can seamlessly integrate with my existing gear, as I am transitioning to a content creator role. The Open Gate Sensor will be particularly helpful, and I am also looking forward to taking photos with it.
Just for standard fictional filming in 24p V-log and one slowmo setting. Did you touch sharpening, contrast, saturation? Any recommendation for ND? Do you stack ND and mist filter? Settings for follow focus? Looking forward for answering and merry Xmas.@@EdProsser
@@aybee5908 I guess only thing to say is keep shutter angle to 180. Sometimes use diffusion and ND yes and stack. Grading depends on the project - I talk through it a bit in here - but I think I also link to a few of my tutorials in the description. Follow focus I don't use!
There's something interesting with the S5 series (I have an S5, and am upgrading later this year to the IIx) is that it's so easy to mix footage with Blackmagic pocket cinema cameras! Yeah it may be a fringe case sure, but I primarily shoot video on my 4k, 6kg2 and even my OG, and will often mix footage with my S5, and the butter smooth roll off I see in the Blackmagic image just very compatible with Panasonic. I'm pretty pumped up for the IIx when I pull the trigger later on.
Nice I hope you enjoy it as much as I have! Yeah I was very surprised a few years back when I got my original S5 and saw the highlight roll off on it! Very pleasing.
Hi Ed - your videos are masterpieces. Have you reviewed the G9II? Looks packed with features and with good lenses and software the one or two stop disadvantage of MFT can be mitigated. Thoughts?
Thank you! I haven't tried it, was meant to get one on loan a while back but never chased it up. Personally I'm a fan of the S5's as prefer the larger format sensor. If you don't need that then the G9ii looks like a great cam.
@@EdProsser many thanks for your reply i have a G9. I was convinced my next camera would be an S5 II / X. I have even bought a 50mm f1.8… but then o went on a holiday. Took the G9 and 5 lenses: total weight under 2kg. Focal length cover 20-600mm FF equivalent. The. I started looking at G9 II reviews and the image quality is much better than the OG G9 and with the right lenses and software can get very close to FF, most of the time. So I’m thinking the G9II might be the better option for me. It even has RAW video options too now which is amazing for a supposedly photography-first camera!
Appreciate the time and effort you put into this. It does not go unnoticed! I’ve been going back and forth for months between this or the XH2-S. This might’ve just tipped the scale.
Yeah I'd actually really love to get my hands on that cam to see how it compares. From what I see, Fuji has better read out speed, so better motion... but the IBIS is not as good. Not sure how the AF compares between the two, I'm guessing they're similar? Obviously the Fuji is smaller sensor so I recon the main decision is whether you're happy with that or would prefer flexibility of the full frame sensor (which gives option of S35 when needed?. I'd recommend renting / loaning one and just see how you like using either!
I'd really like to hear your opinions on the XH2-S@@EdProsser . Without having tried the S5 II I would say that your projections re: the IBIS and AF are probably correct, but you may like the stacked sensor (noise is quite high at base ISO in FLOG-2 but seems to clean up nicely in post). You may find the image a little overly sharp (perhaps more so than the S5 II bodies), but you seem to have techniques to mediate this. Love what you do on this channel - your work and content is greatly appreciated, and always love the look/aesthetic of your footage.
@@davidsikula3488thanks David! I might try get a Fuji loaner and okay around with it to see what I think... been meaning to check out their cams for a while.
The Great Joy are a more complete set, but they're quite big and bulky ... I think I prefer them at the moment. If SIRUI decides to launch a few more focal lengths we'll see. Love using the GJ on my Komodo in particular. I have a video on them coming soon! After them I'll probably look at the nanomorphs... Need a bit of a rest after getting this one out(!).
This review is a masterpiece, thanks for putting so much detail into that. I own a RED Komodo and wanted a smaller / faster tool for our production house, have you been able to match them with decent results on a same project? Thanks!
Yes they can fit together not too bad! The Komodo footage always feels "thicker", can't think of a better word for it, takes a bit of tweaking but can definitely get them to play along side each other.
Fantastic detail. Thank-you for your thoroughness. I'm still debating wether or not to wait for a GH7 MFT. Likely faster read out, much less rolling shutter and less expensive Cine lenses. I do love the image output of the S5 series. It just seems like some issues are going to have to wait for a firmware update, if possible to solve this way. Or perhaps the S1H ii will be the solution, but much more expensive.
I have been going back and forth for a few weeks on which canmera to get and I decided on this one today because amazon has a lightning deal for the camera body the zoom kit lens and the 85mm for $2200. I saw that and I was sold.
I love the S5, despite some of its drawbacks (no camera is perfect) it's a great choice and you get a lot of camera for the money. I'm sure LUMIX will be launching more cams this year, but you could wait forever for the next best thing...
I'm waiting to see if the rumoured Lumix S1H Mk ii launches soon before pulling the trigger on upgrading from Lumix MFT's GH5M2 and GH5S and going all in on Lumix full frame
I used to shoot on the GH series, the GH4 was the first camera I ever bought myself! I loved it. Only sold it a year or two ago. Yes I think that's wise but you can also be driven mad waiting for camera releases, no guarantees. If you can wait then there's obviously no harm
I'm only a few minutes in but you're talking about how you don't like the Lumix being so sharp I think this is because it has such a high megapixel sensor so it can be a hybrid. I'm curious if you've noticed moire? As far I haven't seen you shoot anything that would create that. It's my understanding like you mentioned a filter reducing sharpness, a filter may also reduce the moire but then it creates focusing issues. So I'm curious if you've noticed focusing issues as well. Two questions there
I've not noticed moire but I know many others have! In terms of filters and AF I shoot predominantly with MF lenses but I do have a couple of the LUMIX S native lenses and often add ND and diffusion - honestly not noticed any degradation in AF performance, but I imagine if you have lots of light sources that are blooming it might affect it.
Any of them will let you shoot beautiful work. Decide if your work is better suited to a bigger bulky camera or whether you want something with a smaller foot print. You can't really make a wrong decision...
Great review and equally beautiful footage to illustrate your points! I don’t mind the length at all :) And I think it’s not only the scope/depth of this review that’s so appealing, but also how it’s crafted: nice typography, great pacing, superb selection of music. I’ve truly enjoyed watching it (from a filmmaking perspective that is)! It’s kinda funny because with this 30 minutes review much valuable stuff is said about the camera’s video capabilities, but those make up just 1/2 the camera: It’s also a great stills camera. I’ve been using the original S5 for the last 3 years or so, both for my freelance work and at my day job in a museum. There I regularly put it through its paces both as video (gimbal, interviews, hand-held, studio) and photo camera (real estate, exhibits, events). I found you really need to push it very hard to reach its limits. Don’t know about you, but when I first decided to buy a camera, I so totally obsessed about the whole decision-making process and probably watched hundreds of camera reviews. Now that I’ve invested quite some money into this system (and the L-mount), things have just gotten substantially better with the release of the mark ii and iiX. I’ve been playing around with the iiX for a couple weeks now and it’s such an awesome addition to my kit as a solo filmmaker. Autofocus alone is changing completely the way I shoot.
Yes for sure! I mention stills a little in my original S5 and S5 ii reviews - but honestly (regrettably) I just don't take many stills these days - as TH-cam is always pushing me to shoot more and more video(!) - so I don't feel particularly qualified to comment on it's stills ability - although from my limited use it's very nice, as you say! Thanks for checking it out and the lovely feedback, appreciate it!
If you Google "hsl-hsv resolve technique" you should find it, easier than explaining in comments - if you can't find it drop me another comment and I'll try help!
Hi Ed, thanks for this video! It's really helpful. I just got the S5IIX this month. Also, thanks for replying to my comment in the Lumix facebook group! Haha. Anyway, I have a question, when you talk about All-I, Long-GOP, and HEVC, I was quite confused. Isn't HEVC (H.265), not a particular option in the camera? It seems that you can only choose All-I or Long-GOP and generally (or always?), Long-GOP is in HEVC? I tried to find it in the menu and also researched a bit.
I can't quite remember what I say in this vid but hopefully I haven't got things confused. H264 and H265 (AKA HEVC) are standards of encoding, h264 is an older standard, it's less efficient - but also less processor intensive, H265 is a more modern, efficient and processor intensive encoding standard. Basically uses more fancy maths so you can record less data and reconstruct it on playback. Most modern computers have caught up now and handle H265 very well. All-I and Long-gop describes the way frames are interpreted, recorded / compressed within the video file. So they describe how certain frames may be skipped or whether all the frames are recorded. On the LUMIX cameras, when shooting in .MOV format - ALL-I recording is contained within an H264 file and pretty much everything else is H265. Pro Res also features a form of All-I in its encoding. Open gate is also HEVC.
@@EdProsser Thanks! Yeah I'm generally aware of the difference between Long-GOP and All-I but I'm confused with its relation to H.265 and H.264 so I tried to research after watching your video because here in 12:48, you kind of suggested that you can choose to shoot in HEVC which I don't think you can in camera specifically. I mean, yes, you can capture in HEVC but only by choosing Long-GOP but basically, you can't specifically choose it. In that part, you seem to be suggesting that we can choose Long-GOP, All-I and HEVC but in actuality, HEVC is tied to Long-GOP (not sure if exclusively, but "basically").
Sorry only just now had a chance to look at my camera menus and yes you can choose between H264 and H265 for the same resolution. Maybe I should have set the explanation out clearer? But it seems to be what I'm saying and what you're hearing. You can shoot in either ALL-I or LONG-GOP and then you also have the additional choice of capturing in either h264 or h265 - (both use LONG-GOP) (excluding ALL-I options) If you look in camera, under recording formats / resolution, for example for 25fps in 4K there will be 4:2:0 option (HEVC) and a 4:2:2 option (h264) this allows you to choose between capturing in LONG-GOP h264 4:2:2 or LONG-GOP h265 4:2:0. So when choosing your acquisition format - you need to consider the difference between ALL-I and LONG-GOP and then also the choice between an h264 422 LONG-GOP and an h265 420 LONG-GOP. The camera doesn't specifically list this as h264 / h265 but you'll see the options carry the same data rate (e.g. 200mbps) and then also will list either 420 or 422 - bring it into your computer / editor - and you'll see the codec spec.Hope this helps.
@@EdProsser Hi Ed, thanks a lot! This clarifies it for me. Although what I don't understand is why Lumix don't just put wether it's in HEVC or H.264. They even include the info "LPCM" which I don't actually know, and I guess is less relevant for most people. And, from what I know 422 and 420 is more in the color info more than the codec, right? It's just that they decided to tie it together in the recording options? I mean, can't fault them that much because there's a lot of details in there already, but I just think HECV and H.264 are very important details, not just for image quality but for speed of editing files. It's also relevant in file sizes but I understand because they already give the bitrate so kudos to them for that. Anyway, thanks a lot for taking the time to answer! Love your videos and keep it up!
@@ralphlumbres no worries man - honestly took me like 30 mins to sit down and figure it all out, I was confused too and had forgotten what was what since making the review. I guess 422 and 420 are maybe more important as you know what's been recorded and what's being left out and then you can just remember that 420 is always HEVC, but agree would have helped to have had that included too. But yes the cameras have a lot of choice (which is great!) but understanding that choice can be a bit of a headache!
Great video Ed, many thanks. I wondered, have you experienced moiré with your S5ii X. I’ve seen a few videos with users highlighting issues with moiré. I know unlike S1H the S5ii X doesn’t have a low-pass anti-aliasing filter. I bought the S5ii X but I'm thinking of returning it as I do not want this concern. Many thanks again. I donated to your patreon a year ago (when I was still deciding on a camera) thought I'd found the answer.
Hey! I've never had a problem with it personally. I think if you're shooting weddings with a lot of suits it could be an issue, but I also prefer to shoot with vintage glass and diffusion which can also help mitigate it. There is actually a company who will fit the S5 with an OLPF but it's costly around $600-700 and will void your warranty.
Do you remember the codec/resolution you used for the shot at 12:49? Looks amazing, zero noise in the shadows and beautiful highlights. Love your videos btw.
I'm not sure if you did it but you need to set the focal lenght in the IBIS setting so it's works perfectly! i use a 12mm on it without any problem with ibis. Same for anamorfic you need to set in IBIS setting the stretch ration (like 1.8x)
Yeah with native lenses it's automatic, with manual you need to dial it in as you say. I don't think it works great under 30mm personally, lots of warping at sides, but depends how and what you shoot! Anamorphic IBIS is great but on wider focal lengths combined with the rolling shutter I do think it creates a wobbly / distorted image. Amazing you've got food results with a 12mm!
This is the Formatt Hitech Soft Golf diffusion filter, I know they've just released the PB filter, but I assume they're different, rather than just renaming it... Anyway, this one is nice, warm-golden hazy vibes...
Would like to see Your comparison with new Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera 6K in terms of image, they both has fullframe with BRAW. Both same price point. I think it would be cool. Thanks!
I'd love to try it out if they can loan me one or I can rent one! From what I gather it's the same sensor as the S1H but it'll have Black Magics own colour processing...
Hi Ed after the annoncement of the Cinema Camera 6K full frame yesterday what do you think? Personally for most of us S5iiX is morr thsn enough specially if you havr the video assist like me. Great video I schoot multicam concerts with 3 S5 org BMPCC4K 6K and love braw...
The new BMD cam was a little disappointing, I really hate the form factor TBH and it shares the same sensor as the S1H so not the faster read out speed, some rolling shutter. Not an awful cam - good price, beautiful image, but with limitations. Shame they couldn't develop an ND system for it.
Cheers for this. It’s interesting you point out the differences with the original S5. I currently have an S1 and I had an S5 (until it was stolen!) and somehow there is something going on where the mojo from the S5ii cameras has been reduced by 5%. Ha. That is of course, a stupid comment, but somehow it doesn’t feel the same. That said the S5ii or X are clearly brilliant cameras and brilliant value for money.
@@EdProsser Would be great if they released an S1H mkii, that could be something. We seem to have reached something of a peak with what is possible in a small camera body though so I’m not banking on it. The S5iiX is already a very capable camera. Feels like for about 4 or 5 years now a lot of cameras are spec bumps and re-jigs rather than re-inventing the wheel. I use a Canon C70 for most of my work and it’s been very good to me, if manufacturers started fitting internal ND’s into mirrorless bodies that would really feel like a leap.
@@mattiabricalli I haven't shot on the 6k pro so couldn't tell you exactly! I'm not a fan of the form factor of those cams, find the S5 easier to work with
Hello Ed, Could you consider this camera as a B camera to side with your komodo for some doco ? For autofocus / Gimbal & B Cam for interview ? Or it's just silly ?
A good review,I'm not tired of it ,for photos and videos, these cameras are just like air for us,but the price is also affordable,I worked first on panasonic and I think to continue like this, panasonic still has very interesting cameras only for videos with the possibility of broadcasting live, which is right cool
Yeah I'm really interested to see where they go next, hopefully a higher tier cam in the next 6 months, maybe a successor to the S1H? Or a compact cine cam body from LUMIX - that'd be cool.
This is hands down the best review I've seen in my 30-hour long TH-cam journey to find my first proper camera! Lumix S5II is definetly considered, and I agree with everything that has been said. However I wonder if firmware can solve some of the software issues this camera has. This being autofocus etc. The hardware is unheard of at that price range! It would also be nice to know more of the photo capabilities of the camera. I get that it's mainly a video camera, but I don't see why this camera shouldn't excell as a hybrid. The 25 mpx, colorspace etc. What are your thoughts on it as a photo camera?
Hey Jon thanks so much! That's great to hear. Re stills I did touch upon this in my S5 and S5ii review so didn't spend much time in this one. Basically I think it's a very competent stills camera too. I don't take a lot these days so that's why I didn't focus too much on it. But needless to say this camera will give you great images!
Thanks for putting together this review! Do you happen to know how the BRAW from the S5 IIX compares to the original S5's BRAW? Are there any differences of note in terms of moire, integration in Resolve, or other aspects? Thanks!
@@EdProsser Thank you for the answer and I look forward to a video if you do make one! I sometimes see used S5s listed for very low prices, but if the BRAW is substantially better I’ll probably save up for a S5 IIX.
I have a video on my channel going over BRAW on the S5iiX, it's as good as the BMPCC's this time, having worked with the S1H BRAW - no more sharpening, no more HEVC like compression or crazy noise reduction.@@leafcatcherstudio
Hey mate, any issues with MDT files? My original S5 has been plagued with them but only in certain shooting modes & that’s with the recommended ProGrade V90’s!
Have you tested the ibis with a 28mm lens? I just ordered the S5ii to pair with my Atlas Mercury 42mm 1.5x - and one of the big reasons is for the anamorphic Ibis … to just have a compact Anamorphic travel camera that I can shoot handheld. So the 42mm Mercury is essentially the width of a 28mm lens … you mentioned 35mm and up having good ibis performance, Idk if you’ve tried a 28mm but I hope this isn’t too wide for the ibis to be useable .. anywho, cheers, best S5 ii X review I’ve seen
It should be okay, but just be careful, I'd say the wider you are the more prone to IBIS wobble it is. So it's great for smoothing small movements but if you're walking around with it you'll see warping etc.
Just a question for an anamorphic shooter; Can I use a dumb adapter from the L mount to my Blazar Remus canon EF anamorphic lenses? Is there a setting in the menu that will release the camera, without lense communication? Cheers.
It's a very competent stills camera! I don't take much stills these days nor do I take them professionally, so can't give you too much advice on that front
Hmm which codec and what kind of SD card were you using? Certain formatting can mean maximum files sizes, so if a clip exceeds that, it gets split across multiple files
I’m considering the s5iix for hybrid shooting. Like you, I’m a huge fan of softer filmic looks vs the digital sharpness of many modern cams. I love the bmpcc4k image for example. I’ve been wanting for a long time to find a cam with the Blackmagic Hollywood film look, but with the conveniences of ibis and AF. Do you think any Canon cam such as the R5C could achieve the same softer Blackmagic film look, with proper filtration, film emulation and lens choice? Much of what I’ve seen from both canon and Sony on the video side looks so sharp and plasticky and not film like, so I hesitate to go that route. However I’m wondering if the s5iix could do the trick? What do you think?
I think honestly any modern cam with the right lenses, filtration, lighting and post production can achieve this now. I guess it might be worth waiting to see if / what gets announced at NAB because a) a new cam might tick that box or b) it might mean a price drop for older cams! Personally I love working with LUMIX cams - watch my latest lighting vid, you can see that the LUMIX S5iix holds up really well against the Komodo
Awesome review!!! I wonder if you or anyone else here could share some thoughts on how the s5iix and s1h compare( excluding the autofocus 😂 ) the olpf is obvious benefit of the s1h , but what about the crop , rolling shutter and etc.

Hi Ed…you’re my new favorite lumix/cinema info channel! Thanks a lot!
I appreciate it thank you!
Me too~~
What are the memory cards that come with this camera?
It records onto SD cards but it doesn't come with them you buy them separately
@@EdProsser ah, thank you. What memory cards would you recommend?
Let's give a big shout-out to the ladies in our lives who always oblige us and have to go through this drill: "Stand here, don't move for a few seconds. Ok, now start to walk slowly... that's it, now turn your head slowly... No, not this way, the other way please... OK, now look away into the distance... not too fast... good, good, good... Now I want you to walk fast in that direction and halfway through you'll spin around to look at me..."
🤣🤣🤣 100% accurate
I've been trying to choose between Sony, Fujifilm and Panasonic in the past couple of days and I think I'm going to go with the Panasonic. Thanks again for the review, it was all I needed.
Thanks so much! I'm glad you found it useful and I'm sure you're gonna have a great time with the camera! Lots more vids on it in the works!
Ed, your reviews are the gold standard. Thanks so much for putting all the time into making these. 🙏
Thanks ! Lot of work goes into them

A lot to test and learn with this cam but will sure refer to this video for guidance. big up

Glad you enjoyed it!

Yeah that is a stunning deal!

Excellent. Thanks for your swift response. Much appreciated
Thanks 😊

@@Democratiser yeah if you like it and it works for you that's great! I think LUMIX do a loan programme where you try the camera out for a week or two

Do you have a playlist of the music used in this video? You got good taste man.
It's all from Epidemic sound, I guess I could try do that in the future! Or list the tracks...
This was great thank you very much. Are you favouring the Saturn or the Great Joy?
@@EdProsserAppreciate it. 🙏🏻
Great review mate, I really enjoyed it.
Thanks for checking it out and dropping the comment!
Have you shot anyone with clothing that has lines or buildings with lines? @@EdProsser

You can't really make a wrong decision...
definitely nice to have options, but true that!@@EdProsser
Amazing stuff dude! thanks a lot, the footage from Helios looks very cinematic, Is it L mount or you use an adapter?
it's an older m42 mount so it's adapted to EF then EF to L
Great, detailed review. Thanks.
No worries!

@@EdProsser Thank You my man!
You can shoot in either ALL-I or LONG-GOP and then you also have the additional choice of capturing in either h264 or h265 - (both use LONG-GOP)
(excluding ALL-I options) If you look in camera, under recording formats / resolution, for example for 25fps in 4K there will be 4:2:0 option (HEVC) and a 4:2:2 option (h264) this allows you to choose between capturing in LONG-GOP h264 4:2:2 or LONG-GOP h265 4:2:0.
It was BRAW, pulled down a lot in post! Shot at golden hour so good lighting
@@EdProsser it’s a 12 mm 7artisans so I use it in crop mode (so 19mm) maybe it solves the problem and on 35mm never had a problem.
@@ultimecraft on the crop you'll get much better / reduced rolling shutter so it does help somewhat!
Based on image quality alone, what would you choose between the S1, S1H, S5, S5ii/iix, and EVA1?
Hmm maybe the S1H and EVA1, followed by S5!
was that the Phillip Bloom Gold filters at 5:00?
if so, what are your thoughts on it?
This is the Formatt Hitech Soft Golf diffusion filter, I know they've just released the PB filter, but I assume they're different, rather than just renaming it... Anyway, this one is nice, warm-golden hazy vibes...
ah gotcha, thank you!
@@EdProsser
Having the S1H and now the S5II as well - definitely still much prefer the image quality of the S1H w/ the OLPF
Yeah I still think the S1H has one of the best images of any camera in its class... I hope they bring out a mark 2!
Yes! Waiting patiently for it. Really hoping it'll be their next release @@EdProsser
Amazing video, the grade is insane 🔥🔥
Thank you sir!
Were you using a vintage Helios 44 lens at 2:43?
Good spot! Most of the BRAW section was shot on the Helios!
Question; how is the VLOG profile connected to what NLE you use? You mention that you get deeper, richer colors in Resolve, why is that?
Much more control over how the programme handles colour over something like FCPX. I just can't achieve the same results in FCPX.
Excellent in depth video. How do you work with ProRes but edit in Resolve? What workflow do you use? Thanks
Thanks for checking it out. It's not Pro Res Raw so it'll work in any editor
Yes totally agree. You gain a tonne of powerful features at a cost of some its "mojo" (brilliant use of the word).
Very cool, whats' the helios adapter for the L mount? Thank you!
Just use a cheap M42 adapter to EF then EF to L adapter (Sigma MC21)
Great video! What lens do you use to film yourself?
Either the 18mm or 50mm LUMIX S lenses
@@EdProsser Thx! Can you please recommend an good budget ND filter?
What do you think about the S5 iiX - is it Panasonic's best camera?
Beautiful shots!!! I'm thinking of upgrading from the pocket 6k pro to the s5 iix you say it's total madness? Would I lose too much in image quality?
@@mattiabricalli I haven't shot on the 6k pro so couldn't tell you exactly! I'm not a fan of the form factor of those cams, find the S5 easier to work with
Hello Ed,
Could you consider this camera as a B camera to side with your komodo for some doco ? For autofocus / Gimbal & B Cam for interview ? Or it's just silly ?
that's exactly what I do!
Spectacular review. Thanks. 🙂
Thanks for checking it out!
I need a built-in in-camera smooth digital crop to use coated lenses between full frame and super35, will this camera suit me?
The crop sensor mode in this cam is great, I use it a lot, don't sacrifice too much as you're downsampling from a 6k sensor.
can you shoot anamorphic 4:3 to ssd with prores full sensor readout?
A good review,I'm not tired of it ,for photos and videos, these cameras are just like air for us,but the price is also affordable,I worked first on panasonic and I think to continue like this, panasonic still has very interesting cameras only for videos with the possibility of broadcasting live, which is right cool
Yeah I'm really interested to see where they go next, hopefully a higher tier cam in the next 6 months, maybe a successor to the S1H? Or a compact cine cam body from LUMIX - that'd be cool.
@@EdProsser Yes , it seems like Sony , so they have real competition

Great review
Thanks Roman!
Thanks for putting together this review! Do you happen to know how the BRAW from the S5 IIX compares to the original S5's BRAW? Are there any differences of note in terms of moire, integration in Resolve, or other aspects? Thanks!
Generally it just seems to be a lot nicer, smoother - less noisy - no over sharpening, I will maybe try do a comparison video soon!
I've never encountered it myself! On any of the cams
@@EdProsser you lucky duck haha.
So it's great for smoothing small movements but if you're walking around with it you'll see warping etc.
quality work Ed, you deserve much more subs !
Thanks! Yeah this one took a while!
Just a question for an anamorphic shooter; Can I use a dumb adapter from the L mount to my Blazar Remus canon EF anamorphic lenses? Is there a setting in the menu that will release the camera, without lense communication? Cheers.
Yeah - I think on the camera you have to select the "shooting with out lens" option and it'll let you shoot with manual / adapted lenses.
@@EdProsser cheers 🍻
I'm a filmmaker first, but am looking to get back into photography as well. Any thoughts on this one for photos as well?
It's a very competent stills camera! I don't take much stills these days nor do I take them professionally, so can't give you too much advice on that front
I have an S5 iix and just recored 60fps for the first time. The video was broken up into 1 minute clips. Is this how it is supposed to be?
Hmm which codec and what kind of SD card were you using? Certain formatting can mean maximum files sizes, so if a clip exceeds that, it gets split across multiple files
I was using Mov but I have V90 cards that work great at higher bit rates than 4k 60 with MOV@@EdProsser
Amazing review!
Would you be interested in trying Cinema Tools LUTs for V-Log?
For sure - drop me an email (on about page) with more details
@@EdProsser great. I'll shoot you an email.
Personally I love working with LUMIX cams - watch my latest lighting vid, you can see that the LUMIX S5iix holds up really well against the Komodo
tutorial settings for the lumix s5iix sir 🔥

I have S5iix and so far so good .. i haven’t shot too many , but I have done interviews with it and I liked quality and render out the skin tone .
