    Found the same thing - for people who don't keep up on the nitty gritty techy side, I'm 95% sure that the S5ii/X share a variant of the sensor used in the Sony FX9 -likely just PDAF pixels arranged differently, and the full quality of the sensor available in BRAW is absolutely incredible. 12:1 compression gives small sizes but I did buy an 18TB drive for backups so really I can get the most out of the camera now.
    Sadly for scenes with a lot of movement TH-cam compression SUCKS to show detail, I found static shots in BRAW work best specifically for TH-cam as it doesn't get as compressed and mushy. The actual quality is way better than this on your own monitor.

      I had no idea the FX9 was a 6k sensor that couldn't do 4k50 at full frame (they still managed to scan a 122% area of the sensor than the S5 at 50P ). So yeah maybe they have something similar.
      I believe this is all based on the same A7 III sensor then

    Great overview my friend. Question, would it not have been easier or quicker to shoot using the s5iix IBIS instead of the gimbal? I had two projects recently where I shot one with my s5 on my zhiyun crane 3 and though the shots were great, I had so many down times duento set up, minor gimbal glitches, lens change etc, that for my second project filming bands, I decided to go with a small simple armpit/shoulder rig and enabled full IBIS and the experience was much better with little to zero down times due to gimbal adjustments. Anyways, keep up the great work as always and looking forward to the braw via video assist video.

    • @DustinArmstrongPro
      @DustinArmstrongPro  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Definitely could have done that. I think that works well if your end result will be in slow mo, but normal speed clips I find it's better to stay on the gimbal. Although the IBIS on the G9II may change my mind on that. Definitely it's a solid option though instead of gimbal. Appreciate you watching!

    I'm switching from BlackMagic PC4K to a Lumix S5ii. I'm aware I'd need to buy the paid upgrade to make the s5ii output RAW footage.
    Just a couple of questions:
    Can you fully control all camera functions via the Video Assist? This would be a godsend for me, as BlackMagic menus are all i know haha!
    Can you shoot in the open gate 3:2 format? This is one of the main reasons i bought the S5ii, as I intend to shoot, and deliver a lot of projects in that format.

    Hi there, Dustin: I know I am late to the party, but I hope I can ask you a question or two about your shooting experience. If you are shooting the S5 IIX handheld (without a gimbal) does using a top handle keep the camera steadier? I have an S1 and original S5 and I can't really seem to keep them steady at all when hand-holding them (even when using a lens with lens stabilization, like the Panasonic 24-105 f/4) I don't have a cage or top handle for them, so I generally hold them the way a photogrpaher would. Thanks in advance.

      This time around the S5ii has proper BRAW support with true RAW data passed to the recorder, whereas BRAW in gen 1 S series was incomplete. ProRes RAW is still technically better but for us Windows and Resolve users converting is a pain. I'm working on a codec analysis video, shot a bunch of ProRes RAW and BRAW side by side and there's basically no difference at all worth sticking to PrRAW over if you're on Resolve. Converting takes FOREVER even with a beefy 5800X3D.

    I currently shoot with an older Xt3 and im looking to upgrade. Im trying to decide between 2 full frame cameras. The new Lumix s5iix or the older Sony A7siii.
    My use case is video only and im currently focused on realestate videos and some weddings, client work ect.
    My main concern is for filming real estate in 4k60. What would look better a7siii 4k60 or the lumix s5ii 4k60 cropped? Most high end videographers in the real estate industry use a7siii. Taking everything into account, noise, low light, Dynamic range, image quality ect which is better.
    My goal to get the best quality 4k 60 video.
    Thank you

      Personally I think the Lumix is better in every way. I used to own the A7sIII. But if you're mainly needing 4k60 fps for real estate the A7sIII might be better because it does full frame 4k60. The S5IIX will crop in to S35 at 4k60fps. So you would just have to account for that if you decided to go with the S5IIX

      @@DustinArmstrongPro with 4k 60 its not the focal length im worried about its about the crop degrading the quality slightly. woulnt the image quality look better uncropped?
      also the low light is better? i thought too which is good for night shooting homes. I wanted the s5iix its also allot cheaper but its this crop thats worring me and everyone is using the sony so im guessing thiers a reason for it?

      @@edi18912 the crop shouldn't affect quality. Lots of cameras they use in hollywood still use a S35 sensor (that's what cropping in does. It's the same as using a different camera that has a S35 sensor). It will affect noise though. An S35 sensor/crop will make noise more noticeable. In my experience with the A7sIII and Lumix cameras, the A7sIII yes is better technically in lowlight, but Lumix cameras are more consistent in lowlight. The A7sIII footage looked unusable to me at high ISOs whereas Lumix is more noisy, but the colors, light, etc is way more consistent and looks better. Just my opinion though

      @@DustinArmstrongProi really appreciate the feedback, i guess i already have a crop sesnor camera with the xt3 and the main reason to upgrade for me was to go full frame. but if i always shoot in 4k 60 i may aswell not upgrade? Ideally I want the SH1 mark 2 with no crop. I guess for me i have seen amazing real estate videos with the A7siii but i havent seen any with the lumix sii that look as good. I did see one but it had noise in it.

    How bad is that HDMI lag in BRAW mode?

    • @DustinArmstrongPro
      @DustinArmstrongPro  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's the monitor that causes HDMI lag. Not BRAW. So regardless what mode your in, it'll have a lag. And it's not great. Definitely throws you off

      @@DustinArmstrongPro Maybe I asked the question in a wrong way. Generally it's the S5II/X HDMI lag.
      So the question shoud be "Is BRAW lag worse than HDMI lag in normal shooting mode?"
      S5II is much worse in that regard then for example Sony A7IV.

    • @DustinArmstrongPro
      @DustinArmstrongPro  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Gotcha! I don't notice any difference when I'm in BRAW. You can reduce the lag a bit though by turning off the sound recording over HDMI
